[slim] Re: Need Help!!!

2006-12-17 Thread a . catalani

Your suggestion is absolutely right, thanks I’m not considering anymore
one amplifier for the tree rooms but one of each room or self-powered
speakers.

My Idea is to place many speakers on my ceiling, for an homogeneous
diffusion of the music in each room.

Your suggestion of self-powered speakers could be the right solution,
but I’m ignorant and I would prefer if someone like you can give me the
suggestions in which one to buy.

Referring the size of the rooms, I have tree different size:
14X5 meters
6X4 meters
4X4 meters

How many speakers shall I have to consider for each room?
In the case I decide to use self-powered speakers, can I use the
digitals Output of the Slim Device? And I still can control the
volume?
I live in Italy and our electric power is 220 V. Does I need to get a
new power adaptor or the Slim device comes also with a different power
adaptor?
For the big room (14X5) I think I will need many speakers, shall I
consider for this room just one amplifier and have many non
self-powered speakers?
In this case, do I have to turn on the amplifier or does this turn on
by itself when one of the slim device start running?

Beside all the above, can you give me any additional information I
shall consider in realizing my project?

Thanks in advance to all yours help.

Andrea

Having speakers in the roof is not usually considered a suitable
solution for hifi, so you may need to look more industrial
(PA)solutions rather than looking at hifi forums.

Powered speakers still need analog signal as far as I know. Powered
speakers usually just means there is an amp is built into the speaker
box. I'm sure there probably are exceptions.

The SB is a switchmode PSU and accepts a wide range of input voltages,
including 220V.

I think you need to ask yourself the question, are you after hifi or
just want music in every room because it sounds like you want a PA
system.

[slim] Excluding tracks, but only from random play

2006-12-17 Thread pinkunicorn

I have a Squeezebox that often is left on random mix, and that normally
works well. I would like to have it play only stuff suitable for random
listening then, though, and not things like ebooks. On the other hand I
like the ebooks to be available in the Squeezebox menus, I just don't
want them to appear when it plays randomly.

Can this be done, somehow? Having slimserver skip entire directories
when playing randomly would be good enough.

You can configure random play to only include certain genres. My I do
exclude the Spoken (or speech or whatever it's called) from that list.
See the web interface for random mix.

[slim] Re: Any Digital Piano Owners Out There?

2006-12-17 Thread adamslim

I have a Roland F-100 digital piano. It's got a great action, although
the main selling point for me was its size - much smaller than the
Clavinovas, which is important in London flats! It cost just under £1k
new, about 3 years ago.

Sound is good; I felt it had a slightly fuller sound than the Yamahas,
but that's not so important as it's usually used via headphones.

Yeah, a NAS is basically a very small, low powered computer, with a lot
of hard drive space.

Slimserver used to run comfortably on a number of NAS models out there,
but as the software's gotten bigger (especially with the switch to mysql

many of them.

If you have the flexibility to put in a real server computer, I'd do so.

[slim] Slimserver stops

2006-12-17 Thread imo

I've just upgraded to version 6.5.0. I'm using my iTunes library and am
trying to play a random list. At the moment, the client is SoftSqueeze.
I've had lots of instances where Slimserver just stops (the client says
it cant connect the the server and the icon in my system tray shows the
server as stopped).

Are there any logs I can look at to see what's causing this? Or is this
a common problem?

You've not said which OS but if you are on Windows you could look in the
Windows Event Log (Control Panel Admin Tools / Event Viewer).

If you've upgraded to 6.5 from an earlier version then make sure you
have upgraded any plugins you are using (better still try running
without any to start with).

Also check for McAfee virus checker not allowing access to the MySQL
database.

There may well be other causes, a search here might turn up some
threads...

So, there is no way to show artwork when using iTunes? Is there an

Another words, If I have a Mac and lossless music, cover art is not
 going to happen?
The iTunes album art downloader stores the covers in your iTunes
directory vs. the file itself. If you want to see the covers in
slimserver, you need to either...

1. Store the art in the file. Get Info, Artwork tab, drag the artwork
to the desktop, then exit the dialog. Select the files you want to
store the artwork in and repeat the process except drag the artwork
from the desktop to the files. You can Clear Downloaded Artwork once
you are done. I'm not sure if lossess files support embedded artwork so
you will have to experiment.

2. Drag the artwork from the files to the desktop as noted above.
Rename and store these files in the coverart directory of slimserver.
When slimserver opens your tracks, it will attempt to find the
coverart. I'm not sure of the naming requirements for doing this, but
I think there are some older threads which discuss this.

[slim] Slimp3 and Netgear ME101

2006-12-17 Thread Robin Edwards
I have one of my Slimp3s attached via a Netgear ME101 (to get past a very wide
wall in my house. I'd had some problems recently with signal dropout so
reloaded the firmware on the Slimp3 and it seemed to have sorted out everything
until yesterday when I replaced two short CAT5 cables with one long one.

Now the ME101 and Slimp3 cant see each other (no green light on for the LAN
connection on the ME101 and Slimp3 cant find network.
I've now tried two Slimp3s with the same result, I've tried three different
cables. I've repeated the tests directly to my wireless router and both slimp3s
work fine there. Now the puzzling bit, I connected a laptop to the ME101 and
the LAN light comes on and I can see the ME101 from browser on my laptop.

Any suggestions where to go, because all I can come up with is that the two have
just developed a compatibility problem they didnt have before.

As Greg mentions, it seems that you want a background music PA
(Public Address)-style system than what the Squeezebox is - a networked
music player like a CD player without the CDs.

You should really use each Squeezebox with two speakers only. If you
choose the right speakers and amplification, the sound can fill the
room, even a large one.

However putting multiple speakers in the ceiling makes for pretty poor
sound and it negates the stereo effect. I can't help there as I have
no experience in this area, nor do most people on this forum. There is
some discussion about it at www.avsforum.com but the consensus there is
that in-wall/in-ceiling architectural speakers are a pretty poor
imitation of their regular counterparts and try desperately to achieve
the same performance, usually falling short. The best solutions come
with positionable tweeters though. But the fact remains that a wall or
a ceiling is just not a good resonator cabinet.

In the case I decide to use self-powered speakers, can I use the
digitals Output of the Slim Device?

Not many self-powered speakers have digital inputs and they don't make
much sense anyway - unless you spend enormous amounts of money you
won't get a better digital-to-analog converter (DAC) in self-powered
speakers than you'd find in a Squeezebox.

And I still can control the volume?

You can control both the digital and the analog volume of the
Squeezebox.

I live in Italy and our electric power is 220 V. Does I need to get a
new power adaptor or the Slim device comes also with a different power
 adaptor?

Slim Devices supplies the proper power adapter based on your shipping
address.

For the big room (14X5) I think I will need many speakers, shall I
consider for this room just one amplifier and have many non
 self-powered speakers?

You will need BIG speakers for this room (for those that don't know, 14
metres is 46 feet!) and for speakers of that size, getting unpowered
speakers plus a big amp is probably cheaper than high-end powered
speakers.

Again, you will get better sound quality by using two speakers only.
Getting multiple speakers is a different pursuit altogether and not
something many people here can help you with.

In this case, do I have to turn on the amplifier or does this turn on by
itself when one of the slim device start running?

You can get self-powered speakers or amplifiers that have an auto-on
feature, yes.

[slim] Anyone Have Sugababes: Three? (Tau Analyzer Q)

2006-12-17 Thread fairyliquidizer

I have ran this CD of my wifes through Tau Analyzer and it says MPEG and
it seams to have a frequency cut off that suggests MPEG source but it
looks like a genuine CD and I know the shop she bought it from. Is it
a False Positive or has she been sold a quality fake?

Thanks,
Fairy

Make sure you're only writing ID3v2, not ID3v1, and remove ID3v1 tags

This isn't required, just good advice.

It means SlimServer is 1/2 brain-dead and doesn't logically handle the
situation where there are both id3v1 and id3v2 tags on mp3 files. It's
also possible to have APE tags along with the above two, which throws it
for an even bigger loop. Unlike most software, SlimServer doesn't merge
the different types of tags, instead preferring one over the others, and
often throwing out much of your tagging information.

For instance, in your tag editor or another program you might see an
artist name from the id3v1 tag, while it's blank in the id3v2 tag. It
may not be apparent to you, and it looks like you have a complete set
of tags. But SlimServer will read only the id3v2 tag and throw away
the id3v1, leaving you with no artist.

So, unless you _really_ need both id3v1 and id3v2 tags, and can be sure
they contain the same information, you should just play it safe and
delete id3v1 tags from mp3s.

My mother tried out a number of electric piano's.
The Rolands and most of the non Clavinova's didn't feel right or sound
right.

When she played the clavinova, I asked her how it was and she said
great, but this one is a piano.
She honestly thought is was a real piano, even though she was listening
through headphones.

So her recommendation would be the clavinova range.

Probably because a lot of the development is done by individuals doing
the things they are interested in ... if none of them is interested in
classical music, not much happens. I've had some enhancement requests
for classical music on the stack for a long time, and there is no sign
of any attention to them, even though they've attracted a reasonable
number of votes.

I don't recall one like yours, though - have a good search in bugzilla
and if you can't find a match, submit your own.

Just one very small contribution to your problem - you don't have to
have Composer in your all-in-one string if you have set Artist to be
Composer (I think this is necessary and is likely to be for some time),
as you can have the list show Album by Artist. (Server
Settings-formatting-show artist with albums).

That's just plain not true on 6.3 and later. SlimServer will attempt to
read ID3v2 first. If the tags exist it will use them. If they do not,
ID3v1 will instead be used.

Consult Slim/Formats/MP3.pm, function getTag. In 6.3 this is around
line 98; you will see that it explicitly asks for ID3v2 first (the '2'
argument to the function), and only if nothing useful is returned
(could be APE as well, as you mentioned) does it revert to ID3v1.

SlimServer 6.2.1 was the last version I am aware of which has the
problem you cite.

[slim] SS 6.5.1 = new music folder order

2006-12-17 Thread gonk

With SlimServer 6.5.1 the Browse Music Folder order algorithm has been
changed so that my system will not work... Intital Underscores in the
folder names is now neglected.

---

I have the majority of my music sorted as:

Artist/Year Album/Track Title.flac

But for some music types, not accessed frequently, like compilations or
special genres, such as Childrens music, Classical, Musicals and Jazz I
have added an extra level in parallel of the Artist level:

_Genre/Artist/Year Album/Track Title.flac

As you see, to separate the Artist from the Genres, I have added a
underscore as a first character, this way I will get all those folders
in the top or end of the list when browsing music folders. Otherwise I
would have needed one more folder level. This is working very good. I
always use the Browse Music Folder when selecting music, I even
assigned the Search remote button for this task - very handy!

Now for my problem:

After installing SS 6.5.1 (Earlier version was before 6.5, dont
remember the exact version, probably 6.3.x) the folder order algorithm
has been changed so that the underscores is neglected, placing my Jazz
music in between of Iron Maiden and Jean-Michel Jarre, not the best
place to search for Jazz...

I even tried to replace the Underscore with a Hyphen, but it did not
make any change. Anyone that can help me to solve this? Suggestion for
another intial character or any flag to set the way the order algorithm
works?

[slim] Remote Problems

2006-12-17 Thread johnlk

I have a squeezebox 2, the remote that came with the unit has slowly
been degrading to a non-functioning condition. I have exhausted
attempts to fix, including checking forums, WKI, FAQs. In short the
only thing I can think of now is that the remote itself needs to be
replaced, but here is summary of what I have tried, symptoms noticed,
and other factors which may or may not have any bearing on my problem.

Basic problem - remote functions on start up of computer, then stops
after time. Music still streams to squeezebox fine, and songs can be
controlled from server on computer. Unplug and restart squeezebox, take
batteries out of remote for several minutes, retry w/fresh batteries
endless times, start restart computer, remote works initially then
stops. This has been a slow degradation over last three months,
initially from infrequent problems, to now remote only works a short
while on startup. As of today, no longer functions at all.

I still run version 5.4.1 because I found to be most stable with the
way I use Itunes and m3u playlists, but this is another issue I won't
bring up here.

System - Windows XP, firewall settings as indicated in documentation.
Again, no problems streaming music to squeezebox, just with remote.

I have AVG and spybot for virus protection. I recently added
Spysweeper, thought this was interfering, so uninstalled, but still
have remote problems.

Really no other problems with slimware, rescans music library and
playlist fine, set-up to run through itunes, everything seems ok…just
the remote, at a loss how to fix.

Looking for help on this one, I have a feeling the remote is shot.

Hey guys-

The plugin retrieves song/artist info from parsing web sites that
publish the info. These sites are run by third parties and they often
go down or get lagged. Because of this the plugin offers the choice of
3 different web sites to get the info from. I personally prefer
dogstarradio.com as it seems to update the most frequently and as I
write this message it's up and working fine. You can select dogstar by
going into Server Settings - Internet Radio and choosing it under the
Title Source dropdown of the Sirius Plugin.

[slim] Re: Any Digital Piano Owners Out There?

2006-12-17 Thread Andyb01

I bought a Roland HP137 (entry level) for around £800 new about four
years ago and I also looked at Yamaha clavs. At that time the Clavs
had the edge in the middle three octaves but over all the range the
Roland had a slightly crisper and brighter sound where as the Clav was
a bit muddier imo. However digital pianos have really come on in the
last few years and it really is a matter of taste but go to a decent
music shop to try and go in the week when they're not busy and the
resident keyboard expert is at work.

If you're buying it as a first instrument (i.e. to learn with) some
piano teachers are still dismissive of digitals and it's true in a
sense that you can't as easily get the full range of expression that
you can in an acoustic piano but you do get the advantage of headphones
for silent practise ;-)

But now you get progressive hammer action, true half pedal, sostenuto
and so on as well as a wealth of other sounds and often a built in
metronome too. If your 14 y/o is computer literate (are there any that
aren't?) then get one with a MIDI interface and hook it to your PC or
MAC and get a copy of Sonar HomeStudio or GarageBand and they will only
be limited by their own imagination and your budget!!

Make sure you go for 64 note polyphony as a minimum or you can lose
notes for long or complex passages with lots of sustain and avoid
anything made by Casio (they really should have stuck to making digital
watches).

As an alternative to a full DP which is a hefty bit of kit also look at
portable stage pianos like a Yamaha P80 but you do need an amplifier to
get sound out of these.

These sites might help as a good source of info:

http://www.starland.co.uk/sections.asp?head=Pianos+%26+Digital+Pianos

http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Keyboard+And+MIDI/all/

Search harmony sentral for the Rolands and Clavs - quite a few have
been reviewed.

One final thing - be sure to get one with a key cover - my gorgeous 9
year old (then 5) thought it would be a hoot to (accidentally) pour
tomato ketchup onto his Dad's brand new piano. Despite being
professionally cleaned twice it still sticks a bit. Good job I love
him more than the piano - he will however never ever be allowed to
forget it - lol

Hope some of this helps

OK, tried with quicktime video on on a digital camera, which I believe
works because I can see the blink of the TV remote but not the Slim
remote eeven with fresh batteries. Guess the slim remote needs to be
replaced. Thanks for quick response.

[slim] Re: SS 6.5.1 = new music folder order

2006-12-17 Thread Sam Lowry

With SlimServer 6.5.1 the Browse Music Folder order algorithm has been
changed so that my system will not work... Intital Underscores in the

Suggestion for
another intial character or any flag to set the way the order algorithm
 works?

I had the same complaint. No one had a solution. I was using ~ myself.

[slim] Re: Open Ports ... Security Issue?

2006-12-17 Thread renaissanceboy

hi there, i'm a new member of slimserver (i do not have a squeezebox),
and i'm working on accessing my music library over the internet using
softsqueeze.
i've been corresponding with a few people in the beginners forum on the
non-static ip thread, but i still have a few unanswered questions, and
as someone pointed me to this thread, i thought this might be the right
place to ask them, as it seems like you guys know what you're talking
about, much better than i do, at least.
first of all: if i forward ports 9000 and 3843 (or whatever they are),
what real-life security risks does that pose?
second: if i use slimserver's password protection (which i do), does
that offer a significant amount of protection?
third: is it a good idea, as i saw that someone has done, to create a
separate user account for slimserver that only has access to my music
folder?

thanks a lot-

Anyone and their dog can access your SlimServer. I think to find these
in Google you do this:

http://www.google.com/search?as_q=hl=ennum=10btnG=Google+Searchas_epq=Welcome+to+SlimServeras_oq=as_eq=lr=as_ft=ias_filetype=as_qdr=allas_occt=titleas_dt=ias_sitesearch=as_rights=safe=off

Superficially they can do fun things like start your player at 3 AM
:-), disable your alarms or delete all your player preferences.

It's more serious if the hacker can manage to crash your SlimServer or
cause a buffer overflow as explained in this thread.

second: if i use slimserver's password protection (which i do), does
that offer a significant amount of protection?

Some, but it's inconvenient for you and the password is transmitted
over the Internet in the clear, not encrypted. It's probably more
secure to whitelist an IP address - see Server Settings - Security -
Block Incoming Connections.

third: is it a good idea, as i saw that someone has done, to create a
separate user account for slimserver that only has access to my music
 folder?

That sounds like a good idea, but I'm wondering how easy it would be.
It might also create complications in the future regarding file
permissions.

So far no one's been able to do this, but as outlined in this thread,
SlimServer wasn't designed for security and if someone really works on
it, they will probably find holes that allow for buffer overflows and
execution of arbitrary code outside of SlimServer.

It's best to use some kind of protection. The password protection
you've set is better than nothing.

Do you mean forward without any security? or forward with SSL or equivalent?

In general, IMHO, it is a really bad idea to propagate open ports
in the wild.

What do you mean by separate user account? The default setup on Linux
slimserver distos is to use a limited 'slimserver' user for exactly the
kinds of basic security you are talking about. But it is by no means
'secure' in any serious sense.

so if i don't have any slim devices hardware (which i don't) the only
security risk is that someone could listen to/download my music? i'm

You can't say this.

You don't know that some bad person won't access your machine over say
9000 and feed bad commands that cause the SlimServer to react in weird
and bad ways. It is unlikely, at least if you aren't using Windows, but
you can't know. No one can know.

There are some advantages to the SlimServer being written in Perl, it
is less likely to have the kinds of buffer overflow problems that
other languages can have, but that doesn't mean it is 'safe'.
There is no such thing as a safe language in widespread use.

Why not just use putty or other SSL tool to forward the ports under SSL?
Its a ton safer.

IANAL, but the RIAA and others may have differing views on your
liability if you allow other folks to listen to your music.

[slim] Re: Open Ports ... Security Issue?

2006-12-17 Thread renaissanceboy

as someone who is not a networking expert, i don't know enough about
forwarding procedures to say for sure, but if i have the option to use
any sort of security, i will (obviously) take it. perhaps you can
offer some advice on setting this up?
i'm running mac os x 10.4.8, so by separate user account i mean a
separate account (called slimserver or something) which is the only one
that has slimserver running, and has only read access to my music files,
and no access to anything else. thus, if someone atacks my computer
through port 9000, and slimserver, they will have an extremely limited
scope, because they can't get to anything other than my music (and they
can only read that).
i also am not allowing other people to listen to my music. if i do the
best i can to secure my network, and someone pirates my music anyway, i
cannot be held legally liable for this.

A bit back some people seemed to have issues with 6.5.1 nightlies not
working well when playing Sirius to multiple synced players. I'm not
sure if it was corrected in a subsequent nightly but I've been running
a recent 6.5.1 nightly at home with multiple synced players pretty
reliably even with the high bit rate streams. Overall in my set up I
find the plugin works great with 6.5.1, however, I'm sure there are
people that will claim differently. There are a lot of variables at
play (Internet connection, wireless strength, server capacity, etc.).
