Re: [slim] Fast-forward/rewind redesign
I have never undestood the ff function untill today :-) It works even worse in an wifi setupp. "Let me start by recapping on the current functionality, as I understand it: * FFW mode can be entered by press-and-hold of the ">>" button on the remote. It will remain in FFW mode once the ">>" button is released. SC will start playing at 2X normal speed, where it will play 1s of audio, skip 1s, play 1s, A further press-and-hold of the ">>" button will increase this to 4X speed where only 1s out of every 4s is played. One can repeat this to 8X, 16X, ..., although at some point the server will probably run out of power to supply data at this rate." I'm probably to fast ;-) i press >> nothing happens or it goes silent then a little later a sound snippet ? by then i've pressed play again. Confused as ever. Now i get it, I'm not patient enough to let the function kick in. I will vote for a silent mode with a progress bar, and add alittle display for track time. -- Mnyb Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41235 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] So... are we going to see a new Squeezebox at CES?
Last year at CES there was one Squeezebox on a pedastal. There was a rep there that was the keyboard manager. Yeah, I asked him what group he was in, not peripherals, just keyboards. Pretty amazing that that alone could warrant a FT position. There was a Transporter but it was in the conference room. That room was tied up in meetings with limited access. I tried to say hi to the Slim Devices employee that were there but he was in meetings the few times I stopped by. Hopefully the product gets the recognitition it deserves this year. Good that this thread was started (kudos to the idea that the client is ultimate target of the product and keep it simple - ask them - what is that they really want). Shows that various people have different view on the subject. I too find the current solution rather useless, partially because of the fact that it's not consistent - SB does not react to the remote same way all the time; an then, pressing the play is hit and miss. Since I have discovered song scanner, I don't think I ever used the original way to FF. However, I can see a merit to Phil's view and for sure there are people using it the old way. So, I guess, there will have to be room made for both solutions, either as a configurable option or at the same time. I think that just integrating the song scanner, so that it is easier to access would be big step in the right direction. Re: [slim] TP + power switch II + Marantz f.c.b.s.
Hello Jeronimo Checking the specs sheet for your amplifier PM-11s1 it looks like you could just connect the IR out of the Transporter to the D-Bus Remote In and use the IRBlaster plugin (instead of PowerSwitchII). This might or might not work as I once read that this kind of input uses the same signals as a regular IR remote, but without a carrier frequency. And I don't know if the D-Bus Remote In filters out the carrier. So, if direct link does not work you could also try a regular IR emitter. In addition you'll need a .conf file that matches your amplifiers remote control to tell IRBlaster what command to send. And to answer your question about PowerSwitchII. It activates a special mode that allows to simply turn on and off the IR out of Transporter (instead of sending out an IR command). Perhaps you could explain why it is confusing such that some documentation could be added to the Help->Remote Control Reference page? Actually, I have another improvement suggestion that could be made to the current implementation to fit in with the suggested implementation. At the moment, you press and hold FF to move into x2 playback/seek speed. Holding the button down any longer has no effect. Perhaps holding the button down longer could continue to increase the seek speed, x4, x8 etc, eg. just implement a FF.repeat action. >I'd have no objection against a configurable ff-scheme, but I imagine that >goes against the first rule of coding: >Keep it simple. > There is no first rule of coding. Yes, the squeezebox automatically sends wake on lan packets when you press the power button on the squeezebox remote. >For most (all?) formats we should be able to just seek proportionally >to the designated point in the _source_ file, and just re-start >transcoding from there. > Perhaps play audio feedback when playing non-transcoded, and don't play audio when playing transcoded files. Display a progress bar when fast-forwarding or rewinding, but allow manual speed acceleration, as it is today. I suggest a configuration setting: FF/REW acceleration: Manual 2 sec 5 sec 10 sec where the acceleration time is the period of time that the button is held down before going up the next gear-change. Manual would work like current functionality, where the speed increases after a FF button hold, but will not increase again until the user presses and holds FF again. Seeking will continue at the current multiplier rate until play is pressed to resume normal playback. 2, 5 or 10 sec acceleration would increase seek speed after the chosen period of time has elapsed whilst holding FF down. If the button is released, seeking is stopped and the track will resume normal playback. Another problem to consider with the new FF proposal that the infra red control may not be dependable. If there's any interruption in signal, FF speed will be lost and the user would have to build-up to speed again. I don't know enough about both components but couldn't I link the two devices via a standard cable i.e 1/8" plugs on each side and make tp turn on the Marantz in one way or an other? Re: [slim] Fast-forward/rewind redesign
>I agree that using a proportional bar would be much better than what we have >now. I disagree. The way it works at the moment is better, because the user is in total control, deciding when to accelerate. An automatic acceleration in fast-forward speed is unpredictable (esp. without audio feedback). I guess it's the difference between a manual gearbox (transmission) and an automatic in a car. My most frequent use for fast-forwarding is when I am listening to podcasts that I have downloaded and scanned into my music library. For example, Coverville. An episode of this podcast generally lasts 30mins to an hour. When I hear a bad song, I want to skip forward to the next. With no audio feedback, I would not know when to stop fast-forwarding. I'd have to look at the current playtime, fast-forward a bit, stop, listen and then fast-forward or rewind a bit. With an automatic acceleration in the FF/REW speed, this would be even worse. The functionality would be totally useless. I think some form of audio feedback is essential, and in my opinion expected by those who are not techically aware - those that are moving from CD playback. I also use KDF's Scanner plugin, so I have the best of both worlds. This is useful for long tracks, when I do know where I want to jump to, as it is quicker than fast-forwarding. However, I think this is the less-likely scenario. I can't think of many times when I have specifically needed to jump to a known position in a song, whereas I quite often want to skip over a passage in a track until the music changes (eg. a gap between the last song and a "hidden" track on a rip from CD). I have no objection to making this new method an option, but I personally think the way it works now is better. Give the user the option to decide what method suits them best, or leave the functionality as it is (because it works), and fix other issues that are more high profile. My SlimServer did not autostart once the system boots. It had nothing to do with the firewall, as it had all the permissions - at least nothing that was eluding to it - but I am by no means an expert - and yes I added Perl and all the other applications to my exception list for the fire wall as described above. However what did th job for me is an apple shell script I wrote to check and restart the server if it is not running. I added it to the login-accounts on my computer. [slim] Filtering out duplicate tracks?
Hi, I have a reasonable CD collection (250+ albums) which I have ripped to mp3 over the last year or so, in the folder structure - \Music\Artists\\\ etc Since purchasing my Squeezebox3 i've been experimenting with lossless, and will go with dual encoding Flac (for in-house playback) and Mp3 (for portable playback). But, if I place the mp3 and flac files in the same folder, the tracks appear twice in SqueezeCenter under the album (i'm running 7.0 in beta). The alternative is to place them in 'MP3' / 'FLAC' sub-folders, but this results in two albums being listed. I appreciate this is by design, a not really a fault or bug. Ideally I want a way of filtering out/hiding mp3 tracks in squeezecenter only where a lossless version exists. This could be done via a specific genre/or comment in the tag's. Ultimately it would be great if squeezecenter could be told to ignore the lowest encoded version of duplicate tracks for example. Anyone else have a way round this, other than moving the mp3 versions to a different folder structure as I replace them with flac's - which is not ideal. many thanks Garry -- ggoodwin ggoodwin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14519 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41296 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Auto ratings for my songs?
I have about 10,000 to 12,000 songs that I've rated. But it's taken a long time. When I drive alone (mostly to and from work) I am always listening to something that hasn't been rated. I've been doing this for roughly 4 years. I keep a stack of 3x5 notecards and pens in the car, and I rate every track that has come into my collection. If someone came up with something to automatically rate tracks, it would likely be an abomination. Only a human brain can decide what is good and what is not. Someone mentioned the All Music Guide website. It's a very good website for investigating artists, and what they have available. I wouldn't trust it for finding which tracks to rate though. AMG typically checks off 2 or 3 "AMG Track Picks" per CD, no matter how good or bad the CD. For example, I think Guns 'N' Roses CD "Appetitie for Destruction" every single track is "Excellent", but AMG would likely only check off 3 tracks. AMG is decent for buying CDs too, especially multi-disc compillation albums. If you buy used, you can often get good deals. I'm glad I did it though. I use Music Match as my software (highly recommended, it's WAY better than iTunes for managing music). Music Match has an "Auto DJ" function where you can generate a playlist with all kinds of parameters. For example, my favorite thing to do is to combine genre, e.g. rock and/or classic rock, and select only "5 stars" or "Excellent" (same thing, depends what version of Music Match you have). I save the new playlist. Then I have slimserver re-scan the playlists folder, and my 2,000 track "Excellent" rock and classic rock collection plays at random, where each and every song is one that I personally selected. -- bejammin075 bejammin075's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=503 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25790 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It does sound like a network congestion thing. In terms of what is possible, I have 2 SB3s connected wirelessly, together with JHB, Nokia 770, iTouch and laptop; there are other radio sources (DECT phone, baby monitor) also, and at least ten other wifi hotspots in range (that's what the Nokia picks up - not the most sensitive machine at all!). Re: [slim] Wife wants to get rid of squeezeboxes...
now erland may have a point - although the ts-109 is connected directly to the router (it has no in-built wireless). The 109 runs slimserver but I also mount it to my laptop so I can put music/photo's/etc on it easily (even though it takes ages compared to a direct connect. I sometimes wire my laptop to the router to get 100mbps which speeds things up). The traffic is 99.999% music (either mp3's or internet radio). I do wonder if the laptop firing up is re-establishing the network hard drive mount and buggering things up. I would have hoped the ts-109 and network could have handled that rather simple process in addition to continuing to stream whatever to the sb3's. However, the sb3's still stall when doing internet music and the laptop isn't on. By the way, i have reserved ip addresses for the ts-109 and laptop as the router is a dhcp server. I've also increased buffering to the sb3 to no avail. I do think it's the router, if i'm honest... or a neighbouring n/w. I've installed stumbler or whatever it's called and changed the channel so i'm the only one on mine now. Is internet radio (bbc2 via alien plug-in) notably erroneous? Re: [slim] Wife wants to get rid of squeezeboxes...
So, let's see if I understand your setup correctly: - You have a Netgear wireless router that handles the connections to internet - SlimServer is running on a QNAP TS-109 which is connected wireless to the Netgear router - You have two SB's which are also connected wireless to the Netgear router - You have a laptop which is connected wireless to the Netgear router, but the laptop isn't involved when playing music in any way. Is this correct ? If this is the configuration you are having there is a lot of wireless traffic going on. If it is possible to connect the TS-109 by wire to the Netgear router, this might improve the situation a bit. I personally had some problem with a laptop and my wireless connected SB some time ago. The cause of the problem was that there was some indexing services running on the laptop that also indexed network drives, the result was that the indexing bottlenecked the wireless network and caused hickups in the music. Do the laptop mount any network drives at boot ? [slim] Disable digital outputs in standby
My amplifier only supports two optical audio inputs, so I have bought a toslink splitter to try to connect more digital inputs to the system. As far as I understand, the splitter is just a simple system that outputs light on both inputs to the output. Which means that I can only have one of the inputs active at a time. It works great when using devices that I turn off when not using them. The squeezebox3 however do not disable the output when in standby. The slimserver web interface allows me to configure the sb3 to disable the outputs, but it does not seem to work. Re: [slim] So... are we going to see a new Squeezebox at CES?
I asked this question too in a different thread, e.g. is SB3 at the end of life? Or does Logitech feel like it's good enough in the retail channel. There seems to be no MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) restrictions and we are seeing discounts by larger retailers lately. Clearing inventory? It would be great to see new hardware. What we don't know is Logitech's overall strategy for network music, e.g. do they continue to develop their $99 wireless DJ system separately? Do we see the two product lines being co-developed? That DJ remote shares an uncanny resemblence to another piece of hardware on this site ;) Right now, I consider Slim Devices items are like their "premium" solutions. One of the things mentioned early on after the acquisition annoucement was pricing, especially Transporter. For a company like Logitech to assume a $1999 retail product in their catalog. How long could it last? Gladly it's still here. Hopefully there is cool stuff to see in January. Long live Slim Devices! If you must remain wireless try using a different channel as some other wireless networks or wireless devices might be causing interference. Manually, test each channel and find the one with the least interference. Turn off your router's "auto" channel selection function as some routers cause problems with this feature. Also, any other fancy "vendor-specific" feature like "Turbo" to enhance speed should be turned off as these features only work with the vendor's wireless cards. Router's by default slow down to the speed of the slowest wireless adapter. If you have a mixture of wireless adapters 802.11 a/b/g in your computers and the router is not fast enough to switch to the "slowest" connected adapter, it can cause performance problem. I concur with the other folks here. To stream media a "wired" network is the way to go, specially if you live in a city or around many wireless devices contending for bandwidth. -- tamanaco tamanaco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4620 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41275 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Wife wants to get rid of squeezeboxes...
Yepp definately sounds like a wireless network issue. I'd definately recommend hardwiring for any streaming device, as it overcomes all the shortcomings of wireless which are not obvious when just browsing. -- Paul_B Paul ~ Slimcentre 7.0A1 on EPIA VIA EN15000 Mini-ITX running Windows 2003 R2 (SP2). This sounds like network problems to me Are you using a wireless network to connect the SqueezeBox'es to the SlimServer computer ? [slim] Wife wants to get rid of squeezeboxes...
Hi, We have 2x sb3's connected to slimserver running on a ts-109pro which also stores the music. All connected wirelessly. We were looking to add a third SB3... When it works, it's great. But it's high-maintenance. The radio stations (classif fm, radio 2, etc) just seem to stop for no reason and at random after a couple of hours. The music always stops whenever i turn on my laptop which is on the same network. Laptop runs zonealarm. Once music is restarted it's fine again. Why is this? As my wife says, we just want a music system that works. It all seems a bit 'random' and unreliable. Any obvious things? Any suggestions before I'm forced to get something else? Thanks, simon -- simondp simondp's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12905 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41275 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] sr.se - we have moved
Attention Swedes (and others)! It seems like SR has moved all of it's channels. This morning I tried to "tune in" P4 Radiosporten but I got a message saying: "We heve moved. More information on www(dot)sr(dot)se. Happy holidays" In conjuction, the SB3 screen shows the message "Vi har flyttat". * I can't find anything about it on SR(dot)se and my wife is beginning to get upset :-/ Is there an easy way to update those stream adresses or will it come automatically sonner or later? They can be streamed to but as a stand-alone device. (I might have missed someone porting slimproto to Nokia ... if so hopefully someone will point it out here and I'll update my 770 to support it) -- Paul Webster Paul Webster http://www.lastfm.com/user/BondJamesBond Paul Webster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=105 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
