Thanks for your note and your understanding Jon. Blocking our site
from UK use is the last thing we wanted to do We love music like
you do, and it's painful to have to restrict Pandora's use. It's
especially frustrating because we know musicians are benefiting from
the airplay -- much of the music on Pandora has never been streamed on
any radio program before.

We'll continue to work as hard as we can to push this issue forward;
our dream is to be a truly global radio site.

As a side-note, you will continue to have access to your Pandora

It's wonderful to hear that you've discovered so much new music on our

Our best wishes go out to you from the Pandora team. Stay in touch --
we may need your help at some point in the future to turn things
around!

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2008-01-10 Thread ModelCitizen

Wow! This is exactly what I've been wanting for the last three years!
It's brilliant. All kudos to Frank and thank you very much indeed,
I installed it and the connector in seconds and had a catalogue in a
minute or two. Superb.

There are only two things that make it anything less but entirely
perfect and they are so minor they're hardly worth mentioning, but are
very simple to fix so I thought it might be worth it.

I'd prefer it if the album covers and track listings were top aligned.
In IE7 (at least) if you have one album with lots of tracks the album
next to it will appear with lots of white space above it. I think it'd
look better if both the album and the track text were top aligned (so
that the track listings and the album cover were directly beneath the
grey gradiated album title bar).

The other is that generally the text is very small and the built-in
browser text resizing facility does not work (i.e. IE Toolbar/View/Text
Size). I understand that it might be a simple style sheet change to get
this to work?

They are very minor things though and do not detract from the fact that
this is a great utility.

Thanks.

MC

Re: [slim] Advice on Universal remote - Pronto?

2008-01-10 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Personally, I love my Pronto 7000. It's got plenty of hard buttons and a
beautiful colour screen.
I can control every IR device I own with it.
(Wierdly, I still use the SB remote for intensive button pushing, but
it's the only one I do that for)
It's a one-way device though and you can't do stuff like display cover
art on it.
I got mine off ebay so it wasn't too expensive - about the same as the
new SB Controller!

I know that Barry Gordon's put a lot of work into the 9600 which allows
it to work directly with SlimServer and offer a much richer experience,
but that's a very different remote, and last time I checked, crazily
expensive.

[slim] Skipping or deleting last song in playlist

2008-01-10 Thread JJZolx

If you hit skip on the last song in the playlist, it circles around and
begins playing the first song in the playlist.

And if you delete the last song in the playlist while it's playing, it
begins playing the _previous_ song.

Am I wrong in thinking that either skipping or deleting the last song

[slim] Duet: When and where on sale?

2008-01-10 Thread DoomWolf

The more I read about the Duet, the more I want to just go and buy it.
What I haven't seen in the discussions (and apologies if I've missed
it, but they are long threads) is when will it be going on sale? Has
anyone seen the Duet listed at online retailers? A Google UK search
this morning has shown it listed at play.com
(http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/4162882/Logitech-Squeezebox-Duet-Digital-Music-Wireless-Audio-Streamer/Product.html?cm_mmc=Froogle-_-PC-_-Peripherals-_-Logitech%2BSqueezebox%2BDuet%2BDigital%2BMusic%2BWireless%2BAudio%2BStreamersource=5066engine=froogle_pckeyword=Logitech+Squeezebox+Duet+Digital+Music+Wireless+Audio+Streamer#)
with no availability or price yet shown (the Google shopping page showed
£999.99, but I assume that's just a default price when they don't have
an actual one).

As Logitech have the Duet listed at £279, I assume it will be cheaper
elsewhere, possibly nearer £250. After all, they have the SB3 at £219,
more expensive than anywhere else. Even PC World have the SB3 at
£179.99
(http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?sku=424887page=Product).

Does anyone know when the Duet will be shipping?

I've already bought a pair of high gain antenna's, but they didn't

I see ripcaster https://www.ripcaster.co.uk/node/282 have them for
preorder, currently listing them as expected 1st Feb.

They have them listed as duet £279, controller £199 and receiver £99. I
would guess while the products are new you won't find great savings on
these prices...

Unsuprisingly these are higher than the exchange rate + taxes prices
from the states. Looking at the dollar to pound prices of SB3 I thought
the receiver should be approx £90 but I fully expected that to be
rounded up to just below £100 as has happened. I don't think the UK
price points are quite as compelling as the US ones!

I don't think so. This changes the proxy used by IE on your PC but
cannot control your SB as it connects directly to your router.
You could, however, stream Pandora from your Slimserver (using
something like your suggestion) and then use the 'Wave Input plugin'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35718) to stream this
music to your SB.

Re: [slim] getting the best out of your wireless network

2008-01-10 Thread oreillymj

On a related note. I bought a Belkin G+ MIMO router over xmas to replace
a really old Belkin I bought at the preG stage. It was upgraded to full
802.11G soon after I bought it and has worked well for the last 5+
years.

My SB2 SB3 were working reliably streaming MP3, but downloads on my
PS3 over wireless were very slow and I got breakups while streaming
DivX to it using Tversity. Also some of the neighbours had got wireless
kit, so it was time to boost my signal ;-)

Anyway, after going MIMO, I noticed an immediate improvement.

I can stream med-def ( SD, but not 720p) DivX's which I couldn't
before and I can also stream DTS5.1 flacs to the SB3 which I'd given up
on before.

The router itself does a site survey when you switch it on and will
pick the best channel for you. I don't if or how often it might channel
hop. I set the channel manually to what was on my old belkin router to
avoid re-configing devices, but I'm going to give the Auto-channel
setting a test to see how I get on.

The only downside seems to be that MIMO routers don't do bridging, so
the AP I had in the kitchen to boost the signal there is now useless
and the SB2 in kitchen is still only reporting ~50% signal strength.

Client devices should not care what channel the AP is on. Most
auto-scan all channels when associating and look for the highest

Perhaps that's what supposed to happen but wireless nic drivers seem to
be especially buggy.

A lot of users here who report problems with music stuttering have MIMO
routers and I wonder if the SB3 loses it's connection when the router
hops to a different channel. I'll soon find out because I switched from
C11 to Auto last night.

Re: [slim] Can Duet control my Audio System? (Replace my Harmony Remote?)

2008-01-10 Thread tamanaco

I'm going to speculate here, but a Plugin can be implemented to use
the Scroll Wheel and Menus in the Controller and the IR port can be
programmed to send receiver specific codes.

Something in the controller's menu like:

Select Receiver
-- Select On - Click OK
-- Select Off- Click OK
-- Select Volume
Select Up - Move Wheel to the right
Select Down - Move Wheel to the left

I asked in another thread if SD could get hold of the database of IR
codes for receivers that are used by Logitech to program their
universal remotes, but I was told that this was iffy. If plugin
developers were given access to these codes (which might be propertary)
and assuming that the Controller supports these specific IR codes,
then the Controller could be made into a simple receiver remote. Not
as efficient as a Universal remote with its dedicated plethora of
buttons, but at least will spare us from having two pick up two remotes
to listen to our music.

I have no reason to sell. But I will not be the one to decide. I own

Frank, I'd like and appreciate a separated Album Artist sort as my
Folder structure is built using this tag instead of the Artist. I use
the artist tag for individual tracks. I did this to avoid having a
large Various Artist folder. The reason for this is that I used my
library with an old media player that uses the folder structure to
navigate the library. I also have a lot of World Music compilation
albums which are easier to navigate using Genre and the folder

The ODBC driver must be installed on the local machine at which you
will be running ACC. You must be able to see the music folder on the
remote machine as a mapped network drive on the local machine.

At the top of my script, change the line
Const sRemotePath = /home/philip/Music/
to reflect the drive on your Windows slimserver machine (D:\ I think
from your post).

Change the line
Const sMappedPath = X:\Music\
to be the mapped network drive, for example to
Const sMappedPath = Y:\
If you have mapped your remote D: drive to be Y: on your local machine.
(It seems that Windows drive letters must always be in uppercase - as
you see in Windows Explorer).

You must also change the IP address in the script to point to the
remote machine on your network running slimserver.

Note, I have only been able to test my script with a remote Linux
machine but see no reason why this should not work with a remote
windows machine. All the script does is a string replacement between
the remote path stored within the slimserver database and the local
path.

As for higher resolution audio, that may well appear with software

The SB is a thin client - which in this case it has a basic
functionality to fetch audio but all the display control has to come
from a server. SB has a proprietary control protocol - called
 slimproto.

The main server is Slimserver/SqueezeCenter. Servers such as Itunes or
WMP use different protocol standard (e.g. DAAP and uPNP) and so to use
these you would have to write an interface applications.

Over the years a few users felt that Slimserver/SqueezeCenter has got
too big and have implemented lightweight less functional alternative
servers which implement slimproto. Search the firum and you will find
 them.

Dear bpa,

thank you very much for your answer. I need to say that the solution
that better suits me is to develop a new lightweight server-application
(like you are noting above) which handle the SB player (e.g. force it to
connect to playlists, radio stations, etc..)

In that case my lightweight server will not transfer/relay any real
data (meaning local mp3 files, playlists) but it will handle only the
basic communication though the slimproto protocol. (e.g. myserver
--(get and start playing a specific playlist)-- SB )

Now, the question that rises to me is:

Which are the available options that SB has in order to get the real
data (mp3 files on demand which are located on remote servers or mp3's
through playlists which are also located on remote servers) ?

Let me to make it more clear.

Lets say that myserver or even the slimserver force the SB to get a
playlist and start playing it. One option is that the playlist will
look like :

e.g: Home / SHOUTcast Internet Radio / Top 500 / 977 The Hitz Channel
:
http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=1025filename=playlist.pls

#file 1
http://remote_web_server/mp3s/1.mp3
#file2
http://remote_web_server/mp3s/2.mp3

That option utilizes a web server for delivering the real mp3's. The SB
after the slim-negotiation with my lightweight server or even the
slimserver connects to the remote web server (doing http get) in order
to get the real mp3 files.

I need to note here that this option sucks :-) The SB rebuffers all the
time. Lets say that plays 10-20 and then rebuffers again, then again,
again...

The question i have is: what are the available options for the SB to
get the real data for audio-on-demand or via playlists (after the
negotiation via slimproto).

Thank you very much.

As long as your player isn't registered on SN, it won't be recognized, thus the
language setting is lost. Which leads us to the question about the PIN.

Go to squeezenetwork.com
Log in
Connect your SB to SqueezeNetwork
You'll find the PIN in the player menu (settings)
Add your player with that PIN on the squeezenetwork.com web page to your account

If this still doesn't work, try asking over in the SqueezeNetwork forum.

You don't need to have an all 11n network to take advantage of 11n but
mixing 11n and 11g does slow down the whole network because the 11g

data.

Perhaps it may be appropriate to discuss the finer points if WiFi in a

No need for a separate thread to clarify the finer points of wifi.
Maybe I was not clear enough in my previous post. I should have said
that with a mixed a/b/g/n network there is degradation. To me the
issued raised was related the fact that at home, most people, don't
have a mixed network. So, if I was to start putting a wireless network

degradation that might be caused by the continously on 802.11 b/g

re-configuration of clients.

I checked the list of processes in Windows Task Manager, and there is

So, there must be a token that slimserver checks for to see if it is

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-10 Thread rickwookie

I'm quite excited about the new controller, which is odd considering how
many times I've argued the benefit of the SB3/IR-Remote combo over the
Sonos graphical remote/dumb player configuration. I suppose most of my
argument was based on the fact that for the price of the Sonos remote
alone, I could buy two SB3s (which I did!).

I used to say that there was no logic to having two players in separate
areas that could be listened to by two people independently, if you only
had one remote (costing a fortune) that you then had to 'share' (e.g.
you set up your playlist then I'll take the remote in the other room
and set up mine). So therefore the cheaper Squeezebox solution, with
each player having its own remote and display was not only cheaper, but
better too.

However since moving from running SS6.x on my ReadyNAS (which served
the SlimSever web interface like a dog, but was fine for the two SB3s
using their remotes) to sticking a cheap PC in the cupboard running SC7
on Ubuntu Server (still using the NAS to store the tracks) I have to say
that more and more I like to lay on the sofa with my laptop doing web
'stuff' and pulling up the fantastic SC7 web interface to change what's
playing on the SB3. I can browse all my album art and any commands (add,
play, pause, skip, etc.) appear instant on the Squeezebox. Also the fact
that I can also instantly control the music in the other room, or
outside on the patio (SoftSqueeze headless running on the Server too)
gives me a feeling of mystical power, whereas pointing an IR remote at
a bit of kit in the same room just feels normal and old hat.

So my point is I'm now starting to appreciate the cool factor of the
Sonos remote, whereby you are 'magically' controlling the music in your
home from a colour screen and friendly interface in front of your face,
not squinting at a 320x32 pixel VFD across the room and pointing a 20th
century technology IR remote at it. And what good timing, that as I
reach this revelation SD release the new controller, which is not only
sleeker than the Sonos controller, but at less than half the price, and
it's my birthday at the end of the month! :-D

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-10 Thread rickwookie

I'm just thinking about the possibilities for the new receiver and this
issue of needing the controller to set it up came to mind. At first it
seemed obvious; how could you connect to a wireless network without a
screen/remote for settings, or even a wired network relying on DHCP if
there were a choice of servers to connect to (not very common, but
possible - I had three at one point)?

But the more I think about it, how does the new controller set it up?
Presumably it creates an ad-hoc connection to the receiver using the
same SSID and then sends the same configuration that it used to connect
to the AP and SqueezeCenter to the receiver, then they both disconnect
from each other and hopefully both connect back to the Wifi AP and
chosen instance of SqueezeCenter.

If this is the case then why can't a laptop or other device do the
same?

Is the protocol that it uses publicly available, or does it not even
work like this and I've got it completely wrong?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox options to stream

2008-01-10 Thread moschous

radish;256818 Wrote:

I think you'd get better answers faster if you described the actual
problem you're trying to solve rather than talking about possible
solutions. What's your server hardware? How many players? What's the
network topology? What file types? Usage scenarios? It may be that
there's already a good solution, or it may be that we can suggest one.

ok, let me describe you what do my friends and i want to do and what
are the problems we need to solve.

Our aim is to develop a music-service where slimdevices will be able to
connect to. We intend to release the service in Greece and provide Greek
music on clients (slim devices).

The service will come up with a web-portal where users will be able to
buy content, create their own profiles, create playlists, share
playlists, chat for music, etc..

The service will offer both mp3 files on-demand and playlists
(targeting multiple mp3 files at once). We dont intend to broadcast any
live streaming station, but we will offer lets say virtual radio
stations (e.g. playlists targeting many different categories rok, RB,
etc..).

Now, which are the problems i can see:

1. We need somehow to integrate our web application (where users browse
on a big mp3-library, buy content, create private or public playlists,
etc) with the slim server or any slimproto-based server we eventually
use.
We need to have different users, to access different playlists and
different audio libraries.

What do i understand is that we need a custom slimproto-based
to communicate with our client's squeezeboxes.
For example, lets see a possible usage-scenario: The owner of a
specific SB will browse on web portal, buy content and create its own
playlist. We need somehow to force its own squeeze box to start playing
(tune in) on that specific playlist. We need to do that through our web
portal and not through slim server's web interface.

2. We need somehow to identify the different devices everytime they
connect to the service. Is that possible? I saw that while SB connects
to Squeezenetwork it sends a pin code. Is that available on slim
server?

3. And the most difficult problem is the issue scalability.

But before going on this i want to make sth clear. There are two
different steps/levels while SB gets music.

a. The first one is the communication level (slimproto protocol) where
a slimproto - based server tells SB what to play, where to connect,
etc

b. The second step/level is the delivery of real data (e.g. mp3 files).
In case where we deliver local files/playlists on slim server the slim
server serves those files. In case where we choose something that is
remotely hosted then the slim server just notify the SB(via slimproto)
which in turns connects to the remote area to get the content.

is that right?

So, even if we are going to use the slimserver for the front part (the
slimproto-communication) we need to find a way to scale the second
level/step which is the delivery of audio files. Of course the second
level will be the most heavy in terms of traffic, etc... (think about
for more than 500 SB's)

So, based on the matters i noted above what is the best choice i have?

Thank you very much for your help!

Alliance. I have this exact configuration up and running in my home
network. I can operate my 11g laptop at 54Mbps while my wife's 11n
laptop is connected at 300Mbps. The 11n client runs in 11n mode and
does not need to find a common denominator in this case. The 802.11
standard is designed so that each client can burst data at its maximum
speed - clients on the same network do not need to find a common
 denominator.

You don't need to have an all 11n network to take advantage of 11n but
mixing 11n and 11g does slow down the whole network because the 11g
clients are using 5x-6x more air time to transmit the same amount of
 data.

Perhaps it may be appropriate to discuss the finer points if WiFi in a
different thread if you would like

I was asking the question to find out if SD had perhaps made an
error/missed an opportunity in not moving to an N standard WiFi
receiver/contoller chipsets in their new units. SD obviously want us to
innstall muliple units, however, reading the responses this is most
likely to erode the network's speed capability to an increasing
degree.

In the launch of a new and superior product SD must have evaluated the
necessity of upgrades. Right now the ONLY upgrade appears to be in a
rather snazzy new controller, but at the expense of alienating those
existing users who use WiFi controller. We cannot move to the new SBR
w/o buying an SBC. Or we must stay with a few years old product the SBR
(over priced IMHO).
Additionally SD did not decide to morph to an even better DAC, likely
deciding that audiofiles will pay the $2,000 for a transformer while
the rest of us will make do with a few years old technology..for a
saving of a few dollars per unit. Nothing wrong with the existing DAC,
but why not improve the audio quality as most rippers are downdoing so
at superior rates these days.
Lastly the WiFi version not being upgraded, yet to N standard seems a
missed opportunity as in many houselholds with multiple receivers etc it
can and will have an impact on the whole network's performance.

I have great admiration for SD and their products and tecnical
exp[ertise and have used their hardware and software for years. But it
does seem to me that SD has made a rash of short term decisions. Many
users won't notice the effect of these chices, but many mwill IMHO. I
do hope Sean and his people make some of these improvements sooner
rather than later.

The Logitech purchase of Slim Devices was a completely different thing,

linux/OSS component, I'd feel a little less sick to my stomach.

Generally speaking, once MS buys someone the company just suffocates.

Anyway, until it happens it's all rumor.

How does the new SBC alienate anyone?

We cannot move to the new SBR w/o buying an SBC.

Yet...

Additionally SD did not decide to morph to an even better DAC, likely
deciding that audiofiles will pay the $2,000 for a transformer while
the rest of us will make do with a few years old technology..for a

Huh? People still love valves, and how old are they?

There's nothing new in having products at several different price points

What exactly would you like to see?

Nothing wrong with the existing DAC,

Exactly.

but why not improve the audio quality as most rippers are downdoing
so at superior rates these days. Lastly the WiFi version not being
upgraded, yet to N standard seems a missed opportunity as in many
houselholds with multiple receivers etc it can and will have an
impact on the whole network's performance.

N is not yet a standard. When it is ratified, I'm sure the new devices

It can, it's just a matter of writing the necessary software to

Logitech has already said that this is in the plan if we want it. If
they decide to not write the software themselves, I'm sure they will
make some documentation available regarding what needs to be done.

I think they neither developped Excel from scratch nor SQL server. They

Depends on your definition of success of course. In terms of a success
for MS, there are numerous examples such as Visio, Hotmail and Bungie
(who were recently spun back off but made a LOT of money for MS).

Re: [slim] Slimserver not starting under XP

2008-01-10 Thread BillMoyer

I don't know what to do to uninstall more completely than I have. I
used Control Panel first to uninstall slimserver. Then I searched the
registry for slimserver references and deleted them before massaging it
with Registry Mechanic. I deleted Program Files\slimserver directory.
I rebooted. I reinstalled 6.5.4 - same problem, slimserver would not
start. Uninstalled 6.5.4, rebooted, installed daily 6.5.5 which
remains installed at this point. Same problem. With Michael's help, I
found the error message about another copy of slimserver running.
I suspect I may have missed a registry tag or some other indicator
that slimserver uses to indicate its run status. Only a guess.
Suggestions welcome.
Thanks.

You cannot move to the SBR w/o purchasing an SBC, because you need the
latter if only to register the SBR to the system. Quite a few of us are
very happy using a decent sized WiFi unit to control our SB units. The
minor time lag is of no inconveniece when I have the full edition of
the SD SS website at my command. I never use the small screen on an SB
because I control everything from the WiFi controller I use. Ergo I
thought the new SBR w/o a screen was a great idea until I found out I
cannot accept it on my network w/o an SBC. Thereafter I would likely
NOT use the SBC. I have held off buying another SBR unit, or so,
because at around $300 per unit (for audio only) they seem over priced
to me. Yeah somebody told me to suck up and pay the price. But I don't
intend to over pay for functionality.

Not to worry I am sure that somewhere somebody is working on an
register/authentication pathway w/o an SBC. It appears I will wait for
 this.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-10 Thread jordi . c

This Squeezebox controller is high priced for his function. Nevertheless
It's a great tool to control your music from your bed. As I cannot read
the VFD display on the SB3 from that distance.

For $299 you have almost an Asus EEE PC with a lot more functionality
and you can browse your collection in the browser which goes very fast
with a keyboard, maybe a lot smoother than a controller. Unfortunately
I don't own a EEE Pc.

Anyway my local store has a SB3 discount only tomorrow for €230 (maybe
some large stock :))instead of the regular €299. I have 4 SB3's at the
moment, but I'm thinking of buying the DUET for €399 instead of the
SB3.

What is wise in this situation to do?

I am well aware of that. I'm saying that it looks to me that improving

Increasing costs by adding in a higher quality DAC would not go hand-in-hand
