Re: [slim] Playing cd's

2008-01-20 Thread bpa

Wavinput is a good general solution but Phil seemed eager for a proper
CD solution.

CDplayer plugin might be useful for people with Vista or with soundcard
where Wavinput doesn't work.

The cdda2wav app takes the PCM stream straight from CD - Wavinput is
taken after Windows has processed the stream. You will not get other
Windows sounds breaking in nor will it interrupt anything currently
outputting audio on PC.

Also you select the tracks to be played from within SC (i.e. remote,
Jive, SC web UI).

That's good to know. Keep an eye on whether there are any memory or

The modified socketwrapper seems to get all the stray cdda2wav
processes. It used to occur, if I lined up a number of CD tracks to
play and then as soon as one started, I skipped onto the next track.

Also on one occasion desktop Explorer disappeared and restarted itself
- technically socketwrapper could have killed it although I don't think
it did.

[slim] Wierd order in Artist List

2008-01-20 Thread BigTony

As I can't seem to fix this I thought I'd ask for help.

When I browse Artists everything seems fine ... untill I get to this
..

YZ
Various Artists
Neil Young
Bob Dylan
Joni Mitchell
Frank Zappa

Curious.. and there is no mention of Dylkan or Mitchell in their
respective order. I've used MP3tagger to review the tagged data (all my
CD's have been through Picard) and nothing seems out of order. I've
cleared and rescanned the library. Every album by both artists is
listed if I select them.

Any clues as what to do, I assume its some rogue tags, but where and
how do I get rid of them?

Cheers

Re: [slim] Adding new music to SS database quickly

2008-01-20 Thread ceejay

The usual fix for getting to new music quickly is just to use the Browse
Music Folder facility to browse to where the music is - that forces a
scan of just that directory and adds the music to the database.

Or you can force a rescan any time you like using the web interface
(server settings). Or you can run the scanner from a command line - I
have this built into the scripts I use for my ripping process, so that
as soon as all the files are in place a new scan is kicked off. It only
takes a minute on my machine.

Warning - I don't use iTunes so some of this advice may have to be
adapted for your case, try reading the wiki beginners page on iTunes.

Yup, that will be some rogue ARTISTSORT (or equivalent) tags. I'm not
familiar with the tagger you mention: mp3tag http://www.mp3tag.de/en/
is the one I and many others use. Use it to have a look at ALL the
tags on the files.

Are these mp3 files? If so you might want to try asking mp3tag (there's
a helpful page in the wiki here) to remove any ID3v1 tags and just leave
ID3v2, that often causes problems.

Thanks!! That's brilliant. The info I found was:

The default setting is to rescan the iTunes library every time it
changes and more than an hour has elapsed. If your iTunes scan takes
some time and is affecting playback you may wish to increase the
interval or disable automatic scanning completely - set the option to
0. You can then use the Rescan plugin to schedule a daily rescan at a
convenient time.

I take it the option they are referring to is the itunesscaninterval
located in the .pm files?

You shouldn't need to edit any files (certainly not any .pm ones!!!),
you can set the interval through the web UI (settings). In SC7 go to

If you are in the UK and the BBC servers think you are using a UK ISP
then you should be able to play all the BBC WMA stations which includes

Some problems do happen.
1. You are using an ISP which looks like it comes from outside UK (e.g.
person working in UK for a large non-UK multinational trying to listen
over the corporate internet connection)
2. using UK ISP but BBC mistakes it for non UK
3. Didn't wait long enough for connections - can be 30-40 secs I

As a station owned by Window to the World Communications, who by the way
gets large grants from The corporation for Public Broadcasting, in my
eyes is a public radio station.

Also they ask for money from people to pay for their programing so that
also puts them in the category of public radio.

Also straight from their web site i see that they have exactly the same
member rates as my local public radio stations, also being fully tax
deductible which if someone was giving to a commercial radio they would

In fact all of their member programs are exactly the same as those of

So conclusion from all this data is that they are a public radio

Re: [slim] Unending trouble with Wake on LAN

2008-01-20 Thread syburgh

I should have read more closely. Sounds like a Windows+driver issue to
me, but I've not run SS on Windows, so it's just speculation:

1. Are you sure the driver is waking only on magic packets, and not on
unicast/multicast traffic as well? It is common for both to be
possible, and as SBs have such a chatty protocol this could interrupt
the shutdown process. SB3s are soft off and communicate with the
server even though they appear to be switched off. SqueezeNetwork
essentially replaces the local SlimServer for net radio, so the SB3s
will not communicate (often) with your server whilst on
SqueezeNetwork.

2. What NIC are you using? What driver version (Windows standard, OEM)?
Might be worth trying a NIC with a different chipset, from another
vendor, to see whether this changes the symptoms.

I can confirm that my own BSD based SlimServer wakes up at
inappropriate times if unicast WOL is enabled, seemingly due to traffic
from SB3s. Configuring the NIC to wake *only* on magic packets
completely resolved my problems.

Have no direct experience with this, but hopefully this helps

If the amp is inexpensive, why not. However, the true digital feature
of this amp is really not worth a penny extra, because of the fact that
you still have to control the volume in the digital domain... (A good
true digital amp would take full level digital input and have some
innovative feature for controlling the volume that preserves the full
signal resolution to the DAC or PWM. TacT Millennium and other TacT
 amps do this, for example).

Don't buy the digital claim of this amp. A good conventional amplifier
with analog volume control and built in (or external) DAC will sound
 better any day...

 Peter.

I'd be more concerned about the anemic wattage this has to offer and
the fact that it resamples Squeezebox audio to 48kHz. I think most
users actually want to be able to control the volume via the Squeezebox
(remote). I do agree that resolution is lost at lower volumes though,
as I experience this now with an old Onkyo analog amp. I am forced to
leave the volume on the Onkyo set at a static level so I can control
the volume with the Squeezebox, and it's at lower volumes that the loss
is more noticeable.

[slim] Transporter inputs limited

Suppose I want to run the digital outputs of my DVD and Cable box to the

inputs on the transporter? Also even if I use say the optical out from
the cable box and the RF out from the DVD, it appears it's not very easy
to switch between these inputs on the Transporter. Thoughts?

[slim] Rhapsody + Squeezebox = Endless Frustration

2008-01-20 Thread Chop

Once again, I'm receiving the Internal Rhapsody Error...unable to
authenticate... message when trying to use Rhapsody.

I've been a longtime SB user and supporter, but I'm tired of the
endless frustration in using it with Rhapsody. Even when there isn't a
full blown error, there are constant time outs, drops and an
album/playlist never plays in its entirety without skipping over
tracks.

I have a great network, plenty of bandwidth, plenty of resources and
Rhapsody works like a charm if I just stream it from the Rhapsody
client on a local machine. Of the three other SB owners I know, they
all have the same issues when using Rhapsody so I know I'm not alone.

I'm writing this for three reasons:

1) To vent ;)

2) To ask if others have the same issues and if they do, can we please
stop pretending that the SB is Rhapsody compliant.

3) Does anyone have a recommendation for a network music player that
supports Rhapsody and works? Four years ago, I didn't care about all of
the SB's flaws because it was so cool. Now, I just want something that
works if Slim can't raise their game. (And when I say flaws, I don't
just mean Rhapsody. Squeezecenter is full of lag. The live music
archive plugin has never worked well, and there are always plenty of
quirks in regular playback.)

Lot's of folks up-in-arms about the Controller... This post from Mike
is the first one to mention ALL the capabilities.

In fact, the slimdevices web site does NOT have any information about
the Controller having the Wolfson DAC. With the DAC, the Controller
now goes way beyond a controller.

It would be wise to either correct Mike's post, or correct this
significant omission of the technical specs on the web site.

Where it is now, and where the developer community takes it in a few

starts developing plugins and the like for the built-in, but inactive,

[slim] Minor nit: lossless codecs are never CBR

2008-01-20 Thread Phil Karn
I know this is a really minor nit, but I've noticed it for a long time.

Slimserver displays, on the Squeezebox and the web page, the bit rate for FLAC
and other lossless material as CBR (Constant Bit Rate). Lossless compression
algorithms like FLAC, ALAC, Monkey's Audio, Shorten, etc, are never constant bit
rate. They must vary with the redundancy in the audio stream.

Re: [slim] Rhapsody + Squeezebox = Endless Frustration

2008-01-20 Thread y360

And yes - I also get occasional drop outs, skips and hang ups with
Rhapsody on the SB3 that do not occur with the Rhapsody PC client. I
think that the buffering of the SB3 is more sensitive to network
disruptions. Or perhaps it is a firmware bug. Or a server-side issue.
Still it works ok most of the time and then it is just great.

I think the QA should setup a testbed SB and play a long playlist of
several hundred songs and verify the stability of Rhapsody Direct over
time.
I can understand that a non-geek consumer would find it difficult to
accept the instability.

I'm making progress with my PocketSqueeze application but I have an

main priority is speed (particularly when the server is running on low

Re: [slim] Rhapsody + Squeezebox = Endless Frustration

2008-01-20 Thread Chop

And yes - I also get occasional drop outs, skips and hang ups with
Rhapsody on the SB3 that do not occur with the Rhapsody PC client.

Come on, tell the truth. Do you occasionally have problems with
Rhapsody or are you astonished during the rare (if ever) times when
Rhapsody works as it should? For myself and everyone I know with a SB,
it's the latter.

I think the QA should setup a testbed SB and play a long playlist of
several hundred songs and verify the stability of Rhapsody Direct over
 time.

Or how about just trying to play one album? Screw the long playlist
over time - the simple ability to play a single album without issue
would be a massive improvement.

I can understand that a non-geek consumer would find it difficult to
 accept the instability.

And I would think the geek would be frustrated as well. I don't code,
but I had enough geek in me to accept all of the SB's quirks (I say
this kindly) because 1) There were not many other competitive options
and 2) the open source Slimserver and all the plugins that came with
that made it fun.

But the reality is that the vast majority of plugins really had no use
after the cool - look what else I can do with my squeezebox factor
wore off (e.g. an RSS Reader on a tiny screen across the room) and most
of the plugins that were really useful came with plenty of quirks of
their own (Rhapsody back in the day when it was a plugin, Live Music
Archive, Sirius and XM Radio to name three).

I'm dying to know if people have the same problems with the Sonos, Roku
and others?

Right now the Roku is 149.99, is tightly integrated with iTunes (based
on its native support of ALAC and AAC), and works with all Play For
Sure formats. Granted, I can't read RSS feeds on it and it won't
support FLAC or OGG. But given that 90 percent of people manage their
music with iTunes these days - if it actually works, it's probably a
much better alternative than the quirky box we've been using for years.

You can point it at a specific directory, though I find (on my

I used to have a lot of problems with Rhapsody and other services before
I changed ISP's. After that the SB3 performed flawlessly. Recently, I
switched ISP's again for one offering more bandwidth at a cheaper
price. All my old problems came back and after a few days I switched
back to the previous ISP. The long and the short of it is that
streaming in real time over the internet is at the mercy of many
variables, such as latency and jitter, and this I am afraid varies
greatly between individual servers and clients because of the
intervening network.

This is a know bug and is being worked on. Expect to see some
improvement in SqueezeCenter 7 when it is released.

In the mean time, yes, renaming your files is really the only fix. But
you don't need to do it manually. If you are running Slimserver under
windows, I wrote a little utility program that will rename all your
files in one shot, stripping out any characters with diacritic marks.
You can then re-run the utility at a later time to restore the
filenames to their original state.

Let me know if you are interested.

As for using the digital inputs with other sources: I have a PVR
connected via optical and a DVD player connected via RCA COAX, and it
works fine. That leaves two further electrical inputs available. I can
see that only having one optical input might limit you if you've got
more than one other source that only has optical out. Perhaps you could
use a Toslink-to-COAX converter in that case?

When the Receiver comes out of the box it's waiting to be set up.

First, you set up the Controller to connect to the network using the
screen and buttons and wheel.

You choose the Receiver on the screen of the Controller and it
squirts down the settings to the Receiver, which connects to the
network.

(This is why you need a Controller to set up a Receiver, at least for

It's mentioned on their blog too:
 http://blog.last.fm/2008/01/07/geekery-in-las-vegas

I hope this partnership brings many good things to Logitech/Slim
Devices integration with Last.fm,, now let's hope they integrate
Last.fm radio and services more quickly into Squeezecenter :)

Just to make the Logitech team aware, this new Squeezebox feature (like
SlimScrobbler) won't work for those of us running the SlimServer
iTunesUpdate plugin to transfer play counts and ratings from SlimServer
back to iTunes (I think there are a few of us). In that scenario, if you
scrobble from iTunes as well (to capture your iPod plays into Last.fm)
you get duplicate conflicting scrobbles in Last.fm.

To use the new feature we'd have to give up scrobbling in iTunes or
disable iTunesUpdate. Neither of which I would want to do.

Best solution in my book would be for Last.FM to discard duplicate
scrobbles but I don't think that's on their roadmap.

[slim] Question About Music Not Showing Up in Slimserver

2008-01-20 Thread mister pig

Hi,

Been loading discs onto the HD from time to time. Using ITunes.
Sometimes I load a disc into ITunes and it shows up there just fine.
Can play it on the computer. But Slimserver wont find it. I have tried
clearing and rescanning the library. Also scanned for new music. I have
looked at the info tag in Itunes, and dont find anything amiss. What is
going on here that I need to change? Its strange, also have a Beattles
White Album disc that Slimserver makes the album title NOTHING. All
the music is there, but it wont find the right title, which is in
Iunes.

Need to get this fixed, but not sure what the next step is. Sorry if
the question has been asked before, I just havent found the answer in a

1. Right click on My Computer

2. Click on Map Network Drive...

3. Pick drive letter that you want to use.

4. Browse (using browse button) to the folder on your network attached
storage that has your music on it. You can not select the root folder
as this will not create a proper mapping.

5. Click finish.

Test your mapping by opening my computer and clicking on the drive
letter you selected it should bring up a the contents of the folder
that you mapped to.

I did this with two different NAS boxes One Link Station and one

If yo let the NAS Software select the drive letter or how it is to

2008-01-20 Thread drewe181

yes. just point the 880 web browser at the server address.
eg: http://local host:9000
your local host (server ip address) can be found on the bottom of the
squeezecentre settings page

2008-01-20 Thread vmissel

Can the Nokia 800 be used with Slimserver just as the 770 can?

Re: [slim] Slimserver on Nokia N800

2008-01-20 Thread gharris999

Yes. The Noika770 skin works perfectly with the N800. There are a
bunch of advantages that the N800 has over the 770, but, for Slimserver
browsing, my experience has been that the N800 connects faster, the web
browser is faster, the battery life is better. I don't have any
experience with the N810.

[slim] problem upgrading software

2008-01-20 Thread glennaa11

I have a SB3, and I had not updated the software in a long time. Tonight
I clicked on my SLimServer icon and on the webpage it noted that there
was a sw update available. So, I dl'd the version 6.5.4 installer.
During installation I got an error message that sayd DeleteFile
failed; code 5. Access is denied I am running XP

Now when I try to start SlimServer it doesn't work and after it
attempts to start it just says SlimServer stopped

Should I just delete the whole directory and run the install again? It
was running fine with the old software so I guess I should have left
well enough alone.

Re: [slim] Rhapsody + Squeezebox = Endless Frustration

2008-01-20 Thread Chop

FWIW, I'm running wireless and have had two different ISPs. Also, I
have plenty of bandwidth.

What confuses me the most is why is it that I can sit here and
flawlessly stream rhapsody through the rhapsody player in my laptop but
if I try to play it on my SB2 via the SqueezeNetwork, I have nothing but
problems.
