Re: [slim] Audio dropout at start of new playlist

2008-04-19 Thread Ptur

More info:

* the cpu usage rise has nothing to do with it, I now observed it
happening with only 5% load and no disk activity

* it always happens at playlist start, even if there are no webbrowsers
open and I start it using the remote

is this a known issue? Any new beta that fixes this?

why did I ever upgrade to version 7 :(

Are you running anti-virus software? - Sounds like the playlist is being

The .exe has changed in version 7.x to Squeezecenter.exe from

Re: [slim] Audio dropout at start of new playlist

2008-04-19 Thread Ptur

yes I run AV software, it is a windows box, remember ;)
I also run a firewall (kerio)

No seriously, I've never had to tweak anything of McAfee to get any
software running. The firewall has been told to stay clear of the
Squeezebox traffic.

I just tried disabling AV runtime monitoring and my firewall completely
but it does not fix it.

I did find that when trying more it *sometimes* plays correctly, and
with disabled AV and firewall it more frequently works fine, but that
is zero statistical proof... Most of the time I get this gap. And
*sometimes* there are short audio bursts during the gap, as if it tries
to play but has insufficient audio in the buffer.

any logging I can enable to find what's wrong?

Hi

I am unable to update the software on my controller, and none of the
URLs to download the jive.bin file (to install via SD card) that I have
seen here seem to work anymore.

Any idea what the problem might be? I actually bought two Duets at the
same time and when I installed the first one a few days ago the
software updated OK (after I rebooted the server). This one just won't
do it, have rebooted everything and I has found the server on the
network - is it getting the update from my local Squeezecenter or
direct from your site?

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 17793 - Mac OS X 10.5.2 (9C7010) - EN -

Thanks

Re: [slim] Duet: Hardware Feedback

2008-04-19 Thread Siduhe

The single click issue is an interesting one - I also find this
difficult on occasions with the latest firmware (7.0.1 SC). It used to
be a lot easier with some of the early beta firmwares, but those
firmwares were impossibly slow when scrolling long lists of items.

My impression is that speeding up the long list scrolling acceleration
has made it a bit harder to achieve a single click scroll. No doubt
there's room for improvement, but it's a reasonable balance of
functionality IMHO.

2008-04-19 Thread Charles Stanton
Thansk..but did not have much luck with the first method. I created a
Plugins directory under the Plugins directory. In that directory I created
another directory called biogrpahy. In that there are just 2 files:
install.xml (from the original Bio direcory) and the single 'strings' file
from the jive folder (i did not copy the acutal folder, just its
contents). Restarted the server, nopthing shows up in the applet installer
on the controller. Looked around the SC settings in the web interface, did
not see anything

On the second mehtod, what actual files should I put in the
/usr/share/jive/applets folder? just the 'strings' file from the jive
folder? that does not seem righti did install putty and the scp program
and can login to the controller..not that i am familillar with trhese
tools, but i shoudl be able to figure that part out. just need to know
what files need to go in there. thanks very much. Charles

[slim] Moving SqueezeCenter from Windows to Linux = Speedier

2008-04-19 Thread ToddSTS

This may be a big no sh*t Sherlock item for some, but I figured I
would post my experience on switching my SqueezeCenter installation
from Windows 2000 to Ubuntu Server 7.10 on the same hardware.

_Bottom_Line_Up_Front:_ The web interface is snappier, it's faster on
scanning, and on starting a song when I press 'play'. My library is
5300 songs mostly FLAC.

Difficulty Level: Based on your experienceif you're un-familiar
with Linux there is a bit of a learning curve.

Hardware: SqueezeCenter runs on a Dell Inspiron 5000, circa 2000
(that's right, 8 years old!), Pentium III 650mhz, 1GB Ram. Music is on
a Buffalo Linkstation HG-HDLAN300.

I went with this hardware config because 1) I already had it 2) It is
low-power. I was running a minimal installation of Windows 2000, ie no
fluf, just the OS and some security software (gotta love windows). The
laptop is also a printer server for the house. *NOTE:* Getting *my*
printer to work in Linux was a major PITA but its a special case
(HPLaserJet 1000). I decided to try linux because the SqueezeCenter
interface with Windows was just slow (on my hardware) and I figured I'd
give it a try before breaking down and buying new hardware. In other
words I'm a cheap bastard.

I had played with Debian and Ubuntu before so I wasn't a total Linux
noob, but pretty close. Setting up Ubuntu Server was easy, as was
SqueezeCenter, I just downloaded the CD image from ubuntu, ran it, and
followed the instructions on the Slim Devices website under the Linux
download page. Note: if you aren't a little comfortable with using the
command line in Linux you would need to download the ubuntu-desktop
package after installing, I didn't want to use any more resources than
necessary so I didn't do this. I used pico instead of vi to edit text
files, this or nano lower the learning curve (I hate the vi text
editor).

Obstacles: Getting Ubuntu and my Linkstation to play nicely required a
bit of research on Google but again its not too bad. This link worked
for me:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=288534

The biggest pain was not SqueezeCenter but getting my Printer up and
running in Linux. Apparently the HP LaserJet1000 needs to have its
firmware loaded by the driver everynow and then. This is abnormal and
it took a bit of research and trial and error to get it working, much
to the distress of my wife who suggested I marry the computer since I
spent all my time on it. :D

But its all working now!! It's faster AND I don't have the permission
problems on printing I was having under windows. Yay!

Todd

(yes I posted this in AudioCircle for anyone who goes there too)

Re: [slim] Biogrpahy and Album Review Display on Duet Controller?

2008-04-19 Thread bhaagensen

OK, I realise the directions are not that good, so I'll try again.

1. Get Biography and AlbumReview from the top of this page:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43713highlight=biographypage=4

Save and unzip to desktop. This should create a directory called
AlbumReview on the desktop, where in particular the following directory
hierarchy should exist:

DESKTOP/AlbumReview/jive/AlbumReview

In the last, or deepest, AlbumReview directory you should see:

AlbumReviewApplet.lua AlbumReviewMeta.luastrings.txt

This is the directory and contents you need to copy to
/usr/share/jive/applets.

2. Get pscp.exe from:

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

and save pscp.exe to desktop.

3. Open cmd.exe, the MS command line.

4. Change directory in the command line so desktop is the current
directory. E.g. if you write 'dir' you should see the top level of the
files you've unzipped.

5. I'm asssuming you know your controllers IP, and I'll call it SBC-IP.
In the command line write:

pscp.exe -r AlbumReview/jive/AlbumReview
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/share/jive/applets/

You should get prompted for the SBC password, 1234 by default. The -r
option means recursively, i.e. the last AlbumReview directory including
its contents. [EMAIL PROTECTED] means that the secure copy is being done by
the root SBC user. I'm not 100% sure the syntax is correct, this is how
it works in Linux. If you get errors try pscp.exe -h or pscp.exe -? to
access the help for pscp.

6. Optional. Log into your SBC using putty and check that the
AlbumReview with its contents is in fact in /usr/share/jive/applets/

7. Restart the SBC. AlbumReview should now appear under Extras.

The procedure for Biography is similar. Hope you can get it to work. It
is a REALLY nice application perfect for the SBC.

Frank,

thank very much for the great app. I've tested V6 successfully in a NAS

My cover art has no fixed files names (cover.jpg, folder.jpg, ...), but

Hi Joachim,
with the latest code the artwork is taken from the server itself not
from the directories in your library.

So if Squeezecenter can display the images, so will ACC.

Resetting Xilinx is like factory reset, but instead of pushing 'add' on
the remote while plugging in, you push '1'.

It seems odd that the integrated's VC wouldn't affect the noise. Maybe
you should check the RCA cable and connections and plug the SB into one
of the other inputs. Not the phono input though, if you have one.

The latest version also uses the artwork residing in the directory
itself. The new code should be able to retrieve them from a remote
server meaning a another computer then where ACC is executed from.

I have a version available actually retrieving the artwork from
SqueezeCenter. This would also solve Johari62 problem but...(there
always seems to be a but) the artwork is retrieved through a
SqueezeCenter URL resulting in very lloooww performance (something
like three album covers a second). For the larger collections I think
it is totally unuseable.

I can post the code though if you like. It does solve a lot (if not
all) album art problems.

Re: [slim] Controller Performance Problem

2008-04-19 Thread EliteAV

I am beginning to suspect that I am the only person who is experiencing
this problem ( it is still present with controller software build
r2297).

If this is the case, I would be interested in hearing from anyone else
who has a similar config to mine: SqueezeCenter r7.0.1 on a Vista PC
with wired connection to a NAS (in this case, an Infrant ReadyNAS 600)
with an SB3 (or SBR) using a wireless connection, to see what typical
response times people are seeing when they select albums to view all
tracks using the controller.

This may help me to identify whether there is a problem with my setup
or that a 5-10 second delay when viewing all tracks for any *new* (i.e.
previously unplayed) album is what everyone else is seeing.

I have to say that the stability of the SBC and SBR is improving with
every (beta) build, it is just the above issue which spoils the effects
somewhat. When I hand the controller to new users, they all find the UI
very intuitive but think they have done something wrong when they
select an album and just see the symbol rotating).

I can add that URL to the Podcast list ok, but when I try to play it I

[slim] No wireless connection with SBR and Fritzbox 7270

2008-04-19 Thread finkaudio

Hi together,

I got my first 2 Duest systems today, but I'm already pretty frustrated
:-(

The first one did not work at all - dead power supply on the SBR. OK,
can happen.

But on top of that, the Receiver does not connect on my wireless
network.

It stops with a blue LED and that's it. The controller works fine and
my Transporter plus another SB3 as well. The controller finds the
Receiver as long as the red LED is blinking, but cannot connect it to
my network. With a cable, everything runs OK and the Receiver is
working.

My router is a Fritzbox 7270. A very popular one now here in Germany.
I'm running the latest 7.01 on a Ds207+ with SSODS, but also tried the
same version on my PC. No difference.

I use WPA, but also tried with open network - no difference.
Anybody any idea what is wrong? As my Transporter, SB3 and Controller
are working, there must be something wrong with the automatic settings
on the Receiver. Is there no way to set the parameters for the wireless
network by hand when the unit is hooked up on a cable?

Best regards

Karl-Heinz

the root SBC user.

Re: [slim] nothing but white noise????

2008-04-19 Thread RichardL

I have an SB3 and also use Softsqueeze.

Strangely, the softsqueeze installation started doing this exact
behavior midweek. It plays MP3s, and radio streams, but for any flac
file I get the analog VU meters pegged and white noise. The track seems
to be trying to play but keeps resetting (ie it plays the first three or
four seconds over and over, but all I hear is white noise or silence).
I've tried re-installing etc. but no joy.

The SB3 still plays perfectly however. Before that both had worked
perfectly for some time. I am on SC7, stable release.

The bitrate filtering solves two issues:
1. removes most of the lower quality streams
2. deletes most (95%) multiple streams (same station streaming in six
different bitrates/speeds)

Setting a bitrate filter of 128kbps within jazz removes 2/3 of the
streams for much simpler station navigation and selection.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-19 Thread davidmac27

This DUET makes me want to SCREAM

It has been working great all week long. I have upgraded it (or been
forced to upgrade it 3 or 4 times). It currently has 2269 on it. This
morning, the remote was not connected to the receiver. I tried to
connect and ONE HOUR LATER after about 15 factory resets on the remote
and receiver - STILL NO LUCK.

If I am lucky, I get to the final screen and it tells me 2287 is
available, so I choose to download it. 10 seconds later, the remote
spontaneously reboots. I tried it numerous times with the same
results. So I grab my memory card and download 2287 off Slim's site.
I turn on the remote and it gives me 3 options: download and install
2287, install from SD card, install from SD card. No matter what I do,
the damn thing spontaneously reboots after 10 seconds of trying to copy
the update.

Now that I have pissed away 90 minutes of my Saturday working on this
$428 device, does anyone have any suggestions to get me listening to my
music again??? This is getting old. Does anyone test these updates???

[slim] Wiping out the library - is there a quick method?

2008-04-19 Thread egd

I'm in the process of testing MiP/ SC7 integration on my NAS. As I've a
large library and rescanning it takes a long time I'm looking for a
quick way to drop all records in SC7's underlying DB without
destroying the database integrity, eg deleting records in tables that
SC7 uses that have little to do with an individual's actual library.

What is the simplest/ quickest way to achieve this so that I can
repoint SC7 to a subset of my library and get on with testing rather
than listen to a pointless Clear and Rescan take forever to clear the
existing library and scan nothing...? I'm quite happy to do this from
a 3rd party tool or command line if needs be.

Re: [slim] Wiping out the library - is there a quick method?

2008-04-19 Thread Zaragon

The simplest way to clear the library is to do the clear and rescan.
Apart from the fact that, I believe, it does the clear bit really
quickly if you were to do it any other way and there was a problem how
would you know if it was your integration or the method of clearing the
database.

For integration testing I'd highly recommend that you use the system as
designed then you know any problems are with the integration.

Re: [slim] Fileshare Problem with SqueezeCenter v7.0

2008-04-19 Thread Ed C

Just to close this out and for future reference if anyone else ever runs
into this problem:

I just set my HP MediaVault network based storage to allow FTP read
only access and SC 7.0 can now access the music directory when running
as a service. I didn't have any logical reason to try turning-on FTP
access, just frustrated and willing to try anything. It - the
MediaVault volumes - were already set to allow read-write access for
network computers using CIFS and NFS, and to allow read only web
browser access. I never would have suspected that SC 7.0 would need FTP
access to access the drive when running as a service.

you have no connection to the receiver, why? its a miracle. You look to

hit the back button.

Pretty much the same thing here. Running 2269, have tried updating to
2287 at least 4 times. Now when I select Begin update I see Copying
update with the spinny stuck in the first position (12 o'clock dot is
brightest). After 10-25 seconds, the Controller reboots and tells me I
need to update. SC7 logs still show it as running 2269.

Yep.. Same here. just stick.

Re: [slim] Wiping out the library - is there a quick method?

For integration testing I'd highly recommend that you use the system as

I'm wanting to do, but ridding oneself of large library's
records doesn't seem to be quite as simple as I'd have liked. My
conclusion is that in order to quickly kill SC7's library, the best
thing to do is point it to a single album folder as your library source
and then to run a clear and rescan everything.

I've now resorted to that and hopefully will have MiP integration up in
a while without having to have my full library scanned. I've moved a
few albums into a temp folder and pointed SC as well as MiP headless to
that for the purposes of further testing. I guess I should have started
there rather than unleash SC on an 80k+ track library, hell I could have
been done by now (the entire library has already undergone MiP
analysis).

Still, if anyone knows of a quick MySQL backdoor script to do the dirty
when SC wants to do otherwise I'm all for it.

Interesting that it worked for all of you that responded. Didn't for
me. Even when I try to update manually, it either asks me try again,
or freezes and re-boots. Bug on this version.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter Unable to Write To: when startup

2008-04-19 Thread vett93

I got my problem fixed. The cause of the problem is that I used Norton
360 and Spyboot at the same time. According to the tech support from
Symantec, some software may not work properly with two security
software running at the same time.

I removed Spyboot and re-installed Norton. Everything works!

[slim] Wireless Bridge Capability with SqueezeCenter

2008-04-19 Thread anonymouse

Am I missing something or is the capability to do wireless bridging (I
am using Squeezebox V3) gone with SqueezeCenter 7.0?

If it's there, can someone point me to where the setting is buried?

Thanks in advance...

Re: [slim] Controller won't wake up ?

2008-04-19 Thread casonbang

Updated my SC and the remote to 7.0.1 r2287.

I didn't notice any slowdowns or other problems, but Slacker seemed to
be stopping after one song until I updated the library. And it could
be my imagination, but the remote did seem to be warmer to the touch.

Anyway, it still locked up the same as before. No music playing,
everything on pause. :(

Re: [slim] Adding Podcast feeds

2008-04-19 Thread smc2911

In order to scan a non-OPML page for podcasts, you need something with a
bit more parsing smarts, like AlienBBC (see the ABC example above). So,
depending on what you're looking for, I'd say you either need to have
an opml list or be lucky enough to have it included in AlienBBC's
lists.

Re: [slim] Wiping out the library - is there a quick method?

2008-04-19 Thread Nonreality

I did it by a similar method. To find out where I was getting duplicate
albums I left SB alone but renamed my library to a different name.
When I ran the scan it cleared and only found the dups which turned out
to be from my playlists. Fixed them and named the library back. A quick
way to solve a problem.

Re: [slim] Wireless Bridge Capability with SqueezeCenter

2008-04-19 Thread peterw

That's a firmware feature of the Squeezebox, not a SqueezeCenter
feature. It works fine with SqueezeCenter 7 and the Squeezebox firmware
that SC7 prefers. This wiki page explains what you need to do:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?NetworkDesign
The step most people forget is to connect the other device to the
Squeezebox *before* holding the left arrow on the remote. If the
Squeezebox doesn't have an active Ethernet link to another device, it
won't let you enable bridging.
