Re: [slim] Squeezecenter setup issues and some impressions

2008-05-01 Thread Michael Herger
unchecked. And yet ... once Squeezecenter had finished scanning my
library, it went off and scanned my iTunes library too. So I checked
my settings, and the use iTunes option was still unchecked. Huh?

Would you mind uploading your server.prefs, plugin/itunes.prefs and
plugin/state.prefs files? This shouldn't happen - and I've never seen it happen
neither.

Microsoft, but personally, I prefer IE's UI to Firefox. Please don't
make me run a different browser just to use my music player.

You could give Prism a try - it's basically a FF wrapper which makes a web page
look like an app.
http://labs.mozilla.com/2007/10/prism/

This way you would continue using your preferred browser while having the
advantage of running SC in an improved environment.

Lastly, I took a look at the scanner logs. Imagine my surprise when I
noticed that, despite my being very specific about where to look for
playlists and music, Squeezecenter had gone off and scanned all sorts
of other locations on my system, so all sorts of whacky playlists

Make sure none of these whacky lists is still inside the folder you're still
using. SC will follow playlists and shortcuts inside the defined music folder.
It will _not_ search anywhere else unless lead there by your files.

2008-05-01 Thread bpa

It looks like you are experiencing bug #4266 (
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4266 ) although opened in
2006 - more comments were added this year. There is a patch in the bug
comments but it only works for non MP3 streams. There are other patches
in this thread from post #18 onwards (
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27996 ) . These
patches still seems valid but theire location has slightly moved.

Unfortunately since you are running XP - you cannot apply any of the
patch as changing the source code on your system will not affect the
SC's .exe .

Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!

2008-05-01 Thread erland

Does anyone have a suggestion for a naming strategy of pages that is
related to setting up a configuration with various third party plugins
?

Maybe the actual page name doesn't matter and we should just put them
in a specific category instead ? In that case, any suggestion on a good
category name ? Maybe Configuration Examples ?

The reason for the question is that I like to move the pages regarding
this that I currently have on my personal wiki.

As an example a page that describes how to setup support for ratings in
SqueezeCenter:
http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Setup:_Rating_support_in_SlimServer
The complete list of pages I like to move is those listed on this page:
http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer_Configuration_Examples

The above mentioned pages currently have large focus on my own plugins,
the idea with moving them to the slimdevices wiki is to make it possible
for other plugin developers to add more information regarding their
plugins that is useful in the context and also to make it possible for
users to edit the contents based on their experience.

I guess the page name only matters if the main route for people finding
it is going to be through an alphabetical list of page names!

I'm not sure if we have a strategy for navigation yet, or a clear
structure to work with. I can see, for example, quite a lot of orphaned
pages but really don't know where they should be put: I think someone
needs to take some leadership (with consultation here, hopefully) on
this.

I think your idea of using a Category in that way is a good one (it
will help people find similar pages in the darkest corners of the
wiki!) but I don't think we should be relying on Categories as a main
navigation route.

IMHO

[slim] SC7.1SB3: Songs stop after few seconds

2008-05-01 Thread lagosirio

I have suddenly a problem similar to effects which have already been
discribed here:
When I start a song I can see the buffer fullness going to 100%, then
going down a bit and suddenly being zero. The song stops playing after
a few seconds only but SB3 still displays the now playing information.
The same happens with radiostreams.
I now can't play via SC anymore while SqueezeNetwork works perfectly
(e.g the same radio stations).
This happens with SC7.1, WLAN, Apple OS 10.5.1. I have not changed
anything, the network ist fine.
Factory reset does not help. Restarting SC neither.

I have not found a solution in the existing posts.

What is the current status on this issue?

Re: [slim] Playing cd's

2008-05-01 Thread danco

Yes, it's working fine now!! Many thanks.

To be precise, using the shell script cdda2wav in the Bin folder of
CDplayer, the original cdda2wav in /usr/local/bin renamed to
cdda2wavreal, and the custom-convert.conf file reading

#
# cdd2wav Linux/ OSX verson
#
cdplay wav * *
[cdda2wav] -S 4 --output-format raw -gui output-endianess=little
$FILE$

cdplay mp3 * *
[cdda2wav] -S 4 --output-format raw -gui output-endianess=little
$FILE$ - | [lame] --silent -r -x -q $QUALITY$ -b $BITRATE$ - -

cdplay flc * *
[cdda2wav] -S 4 -gui --output-format raw output-endianess=little
$FILE$ - | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --endian=little --channels=2
--sign=signed --bps=16 --sample-rate=44100 --compression-level-0 -

I did have one glitch when running SqueezeCenter from the Terminal. For
some reason, the CD did not come back after I had stopped playing it. It
wasn't even visible in Disk Utility as an unmounted drive. So I had a
bit of a hassle ejecting it. But later uses have been fine, so it was
probably just an oddity caused by the way I stopped things running.

The CD played fine both as an individual track 1 and playing the whole
CD. I didn't do any experimenting on moving between tracks.

That's great.

I hope to have another beta out in a few days which can use the FreeDB
database which has much more CD info (albeit of varying quality).
Besides including the OSX stuff, it has a few other bugs fixes (e.g
UTF8 characters) and enables caching of database info - so skipping
from track to track is quicker.

I'm predefining OSX devices names so that the only installation issue
for OSX users will be how to find the name of the drive to unmount and
how to edit the script file.

If you strip the tags from a FLAC file in mp3tag then add them back
you'll see that it's type is just FLAC.

Easiest way I have found is convert the tag to the filename using
whatever naming scheme you want. The convert filename to tag to get it
back again.a bit clumsy but it works. Tho because you remove the
tags you'll have to replaygain scan again using fb2k or something.

Re: [slim] SC 7 playing tracks in alpha betical order

2008-05-01 Thread mrfantasy

To corroborate what's been said here, if you add the songs by going to
Browse Music folder, they will play in order when the album is selected
in New Music. I assume that since it's adding to the database in
filename order (and my filenames lead with a 2-digit track number) that
the order in the database is track order. If you add via a scan for
new music they're in a different order. A wipe and rescan apparently
adds them in filename order.

An annoying error, but one with at least two workarounds (remove the
ORDER BY in the query, or do a wipe and rescan) to fix it. And
according to the bug it happened in 6.5.4 as well if you were running
MySQL 5.0.45-5.0.51.

its also good to know that the nightlies link is not where the SBC gets
its updates. however, i think an enh request would be good to enable a
beta fw update if you wanted, so users like me could just get it over
wifi instead of via SD card.
This is BETA nightly builds (not even beta releases) we're talking
about!
Users like you should probably just use what's provided by the
automatic update.

You are very good in calling for bug reports and enhancement requests
but very bad in providing information you were asked for. Richard is
still waiting for the log files you should post.

[slim] Squeezebox Delivery via Logitech

2008-05-01 Thread jamesmadams

G... I've taken the plunge this week and ordered a Squeezebox Duet.
I've been deliberating over Squeezebox/Sonos for some time, and a
friend finally convinced me to take the plunge. I ordered via the
Logitech website on Monday. Come today, Thursday, I had not heard a
peep, so I phoned their e-commerce support line and spoke to a guy who
said that basically, there was a public holiday in a few countries in
Europe, so it hadn't been despatched yet from Germany, and he couldn't
check any more details because the system is hosted in Switzerland and
they weren't working today! What sort of system is this?

He then said - If you haven't heard from us by Tuesday, give us a ring
back! I can't believe it can take so long to get something sorted out,
and I can't believe the slapdash approach to customer service - this is
too long to wait for the product when they are all in stock.

Has anyone else experienced poor service like this?

I could have a totally incorrect conception of what indexes do, of

[slim] iTunes import troubles

2008-05-01 Thread mjuric

After I switched to SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 it will no longer import my
iTunes library. I left the basic settings blank, activated use iTunes
and specified where my iTunes library xml file as I previously done in
6.5.x versions. Nothing happens when I invoke the rescan button. Even
tried to clear my cache. Nothing! No songs, no playlist, no artists,
nothing! There is also no /var/log/squeezecenter/scanner.log and stats
are also telling me that Progress information from the previous scan
is not available. Unless someone could help me solve this I have to
return to version 6.5.x.

I am running my SqueezeCenter on a Mandriva Linux box. I run iTunes
from Windows and export my library to a samba share on the Linux server
where SqueezeCenter can read it. It worked like charm previously, now I
feel that upgrades can be such a piece of junk...

I appreciate any help I can get.

I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about, the database is
already today indexed based on the queries standard
SqueezeCenter/SlimServer uses. I don't know if they have been updated
due to the latest query changes but I'm guessing they are up to date.
However, this still doesn't say that the indexes can't be improved even
more.

If anyone have specific suggestions of any index that can be improved,
please let the developers know by posting the suggestion either in the

Re: [slim] Transporter problem - knob i locking

2008-05-01 Thread jazztime

Today it happened again. The knob is locking but the music still plays.
But I found out something new:

It seems that the knob is acting almost as normal depending on where
you are - perhaps with a little more resistance than normal - except
that nothing happens when you move the knob. In Now Playing I can
turn the wheels forward and backward, but nothing happens. The buttoms
on the Transporter is working. When I push back I get to the Current
playlist (well, my display is danish, and I don't remember the exact
english word). In Current playlist I can hardly turn the knob
backwards (as is normal because of the magnetic break), but I can turn
it forward. But still, nothing happens. Also nothing happens whein I
push the knob. When I take out the power cable the knob becomes loose;
I can easily turn it backwards and forwards. And when I plug back the
power cord everyting works as normal.

Sean (or anyboby else), does this give you any clue if this is software
or hardware related? I hope I do not have to bring it in for repair -
especially as I have had almost the same problem with another
Transporter.

Re: [slim] iTunes import troubles

2008-05-01 Thread mjuric

I found that my perl modules did not build correctly because mysql-devel
was missing in my installation. They now all seem to have been build.
However, now I have problem with the GD module. I tried to run
/usr/libexec/squeezecenter-scanner --debug scan.scanner and got the
following output:

The following CPAN modules were found but cannot work with
SqueezeCenter:
GD (loaded 2.35, need 2.35)

To fix this problem you have several options:
1. Install the latest version of the module(s) using CPAN: sudo cpan
Some::Module
2. Update the module's package using apt-get, yum, etc.
3. Run the .tar.gz version of SqueezeCenter which includes all required
CPAN modules.

I then ran sudo cpan GD and got the following result:

CPAN: Storable loaded ok
Going to read /root/.cpan/Metadata
Database was generated on Wed, 30 Apr 2008 01:30:54 GMT
GD is up to date.

The libgd2 is also installed on my system. Found a thread that deals
with a similar issue:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39240highlight=linkstation

But it didn't seem to fit my situation so I could not apply the fix in
this case. I am stuck right now. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Think of a phrase which is personal to you and shrink it into an

Your friends called John and Stacy who live at number 98

I'm not that interested (personally) in the car radio idea, but your
comment touches on an interesting point — one that's been raised
before. The idea of new slim appliances. For example, I'm shopping for
a clock radio — an alarm clock that I could use in my bedroom that
talked to squeezenetwork/squeezecenter.

Also, would love one for the bathroom, etc etc. There are tonnes of
great applications. A portable boombox to bring in the backyard would
be a good idea, et al!

The missing piece for me is reliable mobile broadband, then a car audio
streamer would be interesting.

You can connect to your home server and stream your own records to the
car.
Access to SqueezeNetwork.

You can have this today if your handy and innovative, slap together an
Micro-ITX or similar car PC load with you fav linux distro. Use
SqueezePlay or similar ;-)

But wheres the mobile broadband at ?

[slim] How to add all my songs to playlist

2008-05-01 Thread SteveS

Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked before but I have just installed the new
Squeezecentre 7 on my system and it looks great, however the option to
add all your songs to your play list seems to be missing. I remember it
on the old Slimserver software when you looked at your music library
there was the option to “add all albums” I used his option all the
time, but it took me over an hour to add all my albums to my playlist
#61516; can anyone tell me if this option is still available or some
other way to add all my music to my playlist.

Thanks in advance and again sorry if this has been asked already.

The yac2slim download includes a registry.reg file. Open this file
with a text editor, edit the file as described on

These registry changes are required for yac2slim - YAC should be

Open WMP and look at the settings to see if is set to do any digital
rights management (DRM) or other protection when ripping CDs. I don't
use WMP so I don't know where you look for the setting, but that's what
you need to determine. If it's set for DRM/protection, you need to turn

Re: [slim] Hide SSID ?

2008-05-01 Thread Pat Farrell
For what it's worth; I use a similar manual system; which creates a
strong password which are very easy to remember. (ie password
containing a mix of upper case letters, lower case letters and
 numbers.)
You have two cats called Tiddles and Cuddles which were born in 2002
 = TidCud02

Still moving waaay OT.

This approach generates keys that appear strong, and are moderately
strong against a bad guy who picks you at random. But not all bad guys
do that. Many (most?) serious attacks start with some social
engineering. Finding your name, wife's name, kids names, pets names is
fairly easy, whether it be by looking at facebook or just walking down
the street and being friendly when you are walking the dog.

Your tidcut02 example is not close to random. A dictionary of your
favorite words, pets, etc. with all sorts of variant spellings is still
tiny.

Better than leaving it as linksys but really a false security.

I personally believe that remembered passwords just don't work for
serious security. If its random enough to be strong, you won't remember
it. If you can remember, its not really strong.

Protecting your music library does not require serious security.

end I couldn't open Album or artists or anything. Then there comes up
messages about Receiver have problems to connect to the server on the
PC. I reinstalled the Squeezecneter several times, set back the factory
settings. Nothing of this worked. Finally I removed the power from my
Wireless router. When I powered the router back on again and restarted
all Squeezebox unit suddenly everything worked fine for a while. So now
I have the situation that I need to repower the router from time to
time. Sometimes it can work for hours with active use and sometimes
less. The more I change albums, artists and so on the sooner I need to
repower.

My router is a very old D-link 614+ so I have considered now to buy a
new router and I hope that will do the trick. I have seen other cases
here on the forum where they also have been changing to a newer router
and have solved problems.

So i hope now :-)

There is another bug hiding in there, too: users sets up SC which scans

Shirky has to say about downloading, the RIAA and encryption 'The RIAA
Succeeds Where the Cypherpunks Failed'
(http://www.shirky.com/writings/riaa_encryption.html). It -does- have a
connection to music (sort-of).

Re: [slim] who else would want a slim car radio

2008-05-01 Thread SuperQ

I've had an 'empeg' (http://riocar.org) for almost 8 years now. I have
yet to find something to replace it. The biggest problem with many new
cars is the lack of a proper DIN slot to move it to. A squeezebox-car
could be close to an acceptable UI, but no where near as good as the
empeg for car use.

I could easily be done with a (trunk|boot)-mounted car PC with a laptop
drive, and bluetooth to get data via cellular for internet streams.

This is actually a better example, assuming you are not internationally
known as an expert on dickens.

Re: [slim] Duet skips when playing 48KHz/24bit flac files

Could be a flac encoding problem. What software did you use to encode
the flac?

I ripped the hi-rez DVD with DVD Audio Extractor (CAS) then converted
the ripped files to flac with dbpoweramp. The flac codec is release 10
(FLAC 1.2.0). I will try with another method, if I can find one,
tomorrow.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Controller browse genre artist or album

This is bugging me too. Anyone any ideas?

In SqueezeCenter when you browse by genre you have an option to view
All Albums. For some reason, this option is not also available on
the SqueezeBox Controller (the new remote). When you select a genre,
you get a list of artists and I cannot find a way to switch to viewing
by album. Is anyone aware if this is possible to do?

Re: [slim] Some albums not getting scanned

2008-05-01 Thread darius

This may be obvious and unhelpful, but I had this problem recently and
realized it was because of a stupid mistake I was making. It appears
that 7.0 -- at least my installation -- defaulted not to allow
automatic rescanning for music. You have to go into settings and turn
on the auto-rescan. Once I did that, no more problems.

Regarding your issue of some albums not showing up after a manual
rescan, I used to have this problem before 7.0, when an album's
composer was the same as its artist. I'm not sure if that bug has been
fixed or not, but it used to prevent that particular album from being
scanned. The workaround is just to change the composer to something
different, and the album will get picked up.

Re: [slim] Controller browse genre artist or album

It shows 'all albums' with r2287. There must've been a fix with 7.01, so
you may need to install that to get the controller to update its
firmware.

You could change the source to SqueezeNetwork through controller's menu
- it should start an update.
