 Interesting, so explain to me where the transcoding (decompression) is

 taking place given I start with a FLAC. From what you are saying, it
 happens on the Trasporter (i.e. the SqueezeBoxes) and not the server.

 Sooo, if I only had an SB1, even though I rip in FLAC, the server will

 transcode (compress it) to an mp3, serve it up to the SB1, then the SB1

 will transcode it (decompress it) back to PCM... And I don't get any
 of
 the benefits of Lossless Compression. i.e. There is no such thing as
 pass through on any of the SqueezeBox products w.r.t. the digital
 signal out on the SPDIF port?

While you are right that there is a possibility of a delay between the
analog and digital outputs, in practice it is very small - almost
certainly less than the difference in delay you would get from moving
some speakers around. As OP has found!

In Squeezeboxes (which includes the Transporter for this discussion)
the big buffering takes place on the input end (the network port coming
in). So synchronising the output of a Squeezebox with, say, a video
player on the server is pretty much impossible. There are smarts in
the SBs which allow synchronisation of multiple SBs, though.

As for where transcoding takes place - it can be either on the server
or on the player, according to how it is configured. Actually if you
were playing a FLAC file to an SB1 you'd get better results, network
permitting, if you had the server transcode to WAV for the SB1 to play
directly. That would be lossless throughout. For SB2 onwards you'd
send FLAC to the player and let the player decode to PCM.

Whether this is what you mean by pass through I have no idea

Well I got some progress, the 3 lines appear but only for about 1
second. For some reason it wont pick up my block and duration code to
hold the display.

Any ideas? :s

This is the code that does work;
$client-showBriefly({ line = [$mytopline, $a],,}, {
'duration' = 15, 'block' = 0});

Expanded to use 3 lines, this doesnt work for more than 1 second;

$client-showBriefly({
'line' = [ $mytopline, $a, $mytopline ],
'duration' = 15,
'block' = 0,
'center' = [ $center1, $center2, $center3 ],
'overlay' = [ $overlay1, $overlay2, $overlay3 ],
'fonts' = { 'graphic-320x32' = 'threeline',}
   }

2008-05-24 Thread NoodlesSmash

Hi all.
I have been using my squeezebox for about 6 months now with no problem.
I now seem to have a problem with the remote control. It works for a
while when I set up things but as soon as a track is playing it doesn't
respond to the remote not even to switch it off or turn it up. I have
tried the obvious stuff like batteries etc. Does anyone have any clue
what could be up or the contact info so as I can get it replaced?
Should I try to update firmware? V86 at present.
Thanks in advance.

The battery cover of my controller is not closed tight and creaks
everytime I grab it. It's almost new and never dropped. I can't
appreciate its craftsmanship at all. Look at the inside of the cover.
It's locked only at the top and the bottom, not at the side. And there
is a small vertical strut under the tiny sponge. With this structure
(yeah... I was an architectural engineer :)), it can't last long in
place.

You need to pass 2 hashes - one for the display itself and one for the
optional parameters to showBriefly. You are doing this in the first
case, but have merged them in the second case.

Something like the following:

$client-showBriefly( {
line = ['line1', 'line2','line3'],
fonts = { graphics-320x32 = 'threeline' }
}, { duration = 15, block = 0 } );

[slim] SB stopped working

2008-05-24 Thread RonM

After some time using successfully, I've just found that the SB appears
to have stopped working. It was working fine last night. After an
overnight rest, it is not working. Setup is hybrid ethernet/wireless,
both through the same router.

SB is on, light is low white. Ethernet connection seems active, green
lights at both ends (SB and router). Network otherwise is working, can
access external resources (e.g. this forum) from the computer, which is
ethernet-connected to the same router, which is connected to an
external WAN.

When I turned on the controller, it did not detect the SB. I thought
maybe wireless problems so opened up Squeezecenter on the computer,
advanced, no player detected, so the problem is not wireless.

SB has been disconnected from the power source and reconnected twice,
both times returning to the low white condition quickly.

I'd have called tech support, except that the hours (not open till 9
Pacific time) are not friendly for the east, and I will not be able to
contact when they are open (after noon my time). Frustrating.

Help?

Ron

Hello Pat,

Not sure I understand your post. I was not asking any questions. I was
making suggestions for possible places for the OP to look for retail of
Squeezebox products. As is the case with most websites, they are not
always up to date. Fry's is not even listed as a retailer on the Slim
Devices website but I have seen Squeezeboxes on their shelf every time
I have been in there.

Atlanta has multiple locations for Fry's, Brand Smart, and Magnolia. I
did make a mistake though in that Best Buy not Tweeter owns Magnolia.
So I guess in a way, Best Buy does carry Squeezeboxes.

I didn't mean to infer that Tweeter was high end. I was saying that
Magnolia was higher then Tweeter, but that should have been higher then
Best Buy. A step up on the Audio Video rung then your average big box
consumer electronics store.

At any rate, I can only speak for my local area. I was making
suggestions to look for those stores in his area or stores similar to
them. Because again, the web is not always up to date.

[slim] Scanner error

2008-05-24 Thread dhuskey

I have recently begun getting a scanner error which does not seem to be
related to the My SQL database access or virus scanner blocking. The
scan fails complete in both full scan and rescan for changes modes.
This is the log file of the error:

[08-05-24 07:12:25.2517] main::main (211) Error: Failed when running
main scan: [Can't call method name on an undefined value at

]
[08-05-24 07:12:25.2526] main::main (212) Error: Skipping post-process
 Not updating lastRescanTime!

Any suggestions? This is the 7.0.1 release using MusicIP. The scan
results show that the MusicIP import does not complete either:

Directory Scan   (1  of  1)   Complete  00:00:26
MusicIP Import   (4950  of  24973)   Running  00:37:54
F:\Music\Christmas\Joe Weed - Prairie Christmas\03 - Hark the Herald
Angels Sing.flac
SqueezeCenter has finished scanning your music collection.00:38:20

The symptoms are that the cover art does not get displayed in album or
new music views only when a single album is selected, and the MusicIP
MM does not get displayed so I can not run mixes from SqueezeCenter.

2008-05-24 Thread BrockStone

You are misunderstanding.

The SBR has it's IP just fine (as outlined in my original post). The
problem is the IP that it THINKS the SC is at is mistaken. The SC has
a valid IP, but the SBR is told that the SC resides at the router, not
at the PC that it is actually on.

I've done numerous factory resets, reboots, logging into the SBR using
the perl tools to manually set the SC IP, nothing.

ds2021;304606 Wrote:

 does not work, try a factory reset and reconfiguration. You should also

The jack plug should be able to be used in future for listening to

[slim] Squeezebox 3 rebooting - warranty status?

I have a Squeezebox 3 (wireless) purchased on 3/28/07. It just today
started spontaneously rebooting while in use. Does anyone know whether
it has a one or two year warranty based on the purchase date?

IIRC, you can d/l the archive of the latest Squeezecentre version,
extract the firmware .bin file and drop that into the ..\firmware
directory for the slimsever. Then edit the .version file to refer to
the binary you want to load, press and hold brightness on remote to
force the firmware to reload.

[slim] Squeezbox Duet won't run WMA lossless - suggestions?

2008-05-24 Thread Hinduclient

I've got the Logitech Squeezebox Duet hooked up. MP3s and playlists
sound great. The network works. But WMA lossless files don't playback.
The Squeezeserver software shows the song is playing, the time
decreases in the display, but no sound. The website mentions something
about transcoding WMA lossless, but tech support was cordial, but
clueless. Any suggestions?

I'm running SqueezeCenter Version 7.0.1

Settings File type Windows Media the choices are either on or
disabled. Looks OK - mp3s play - WMA lossless doesn't.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 rebooting - warranty status?

2008-05-24 Thread cord

Hmmm, thats interesting. My v3 squeezebox has just starting rebooting
as well. Its fine in the menus, but as soon as you play any music
(from mp3 files, internet radio, or squeezebox network) it plays
between 0-10 seconds of the file and then freezes, then about 3 seconds
later it reboots itself.

Tried everything to fix it, upgraded firmware, set to factory defaults,
nothing has worked.

I send an email to Logitec today about this (just now infact).

Can you do custom installation of that app? Roxio sounds like something
you don't need to manage your calendar, but adds a lot of bulk to the

what part of the app does block SC.

Just saw your reply, dang those mid-air collisions.

So, what's your setup like? Wired/wireless? How's the server
connected to the network?

Completely anecdotally and unscientifically, whenever
SlimServer/SqueezeCenter suddenly stops working, 9 times out of 10 it
works great again when it's hooked up using all-wired connections, and
something's changed in the wireless setup (the neighbors just bought a
new draft-N router or somesuch). i.e. SqueezeCenter is only as stable
as the network it's hooked up to.

Re: [slim] SO frustrated

Do you have any anti-virus software installed? If so, make sure you
look in the settings of the antivirus software in order to tell it to
specifically NOT scan *.MYI and *.MYD files.

This is a known problem when running on windows, as the database
software used by SqueezeCenter seems to have a problem when its
temporary files are being scanned by AV software.

A common symptom is as you have described, pages that just seem to
hang. If you look in the server log (server settings-advanced-
 logging) you'll probably see something about files with an
extension like the two above.

cheers,
kdf

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Duet Firmware Update problem

2008-05-24 Thread egd

You should see an option to upgrade firmware under Settings/ Advanced/
Software update. Whether that will or will not work for you is another
question altogether. My Receiver has never been able to upgrade its
firmware via the wireless connection so I've resorted to using an SD
card. Copy the firmware onto the SD card, pop that into your Receiver
and choose Update from SD card.

On my Ubuntu machine the firmware is located at
/var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/
Just rename the file jive_x.x_r.bin to jive.bin, put it on an SD
card, pop the SD card into the Controller and update from the
Controller.

If you're running windows I'd search for /program files/*jive*.bin to
find the file.

[slim] Controller: some [early] observations

2008-05-24 Thread egd

So, I've had the Duet for a little while now and after the battle to
upgrade firmware and render the device useful I've been using the
Controller exclusively to control all my SB3s, Transporter and
Receiver. What follows are my initial observations (based on using out
of the box functionality):

- Once you have the Controller up and running it works pretty reliably
- Being able to browse Albums sorted by Artist still needs to be
addressed, but it seems this is underway (thanks Ben). I look forward
to being able to browse Album covers, sorted by Artist :)
- I'm pleasantly surprised by the SB3, Receiver and Transporter's
responsiveness to the Controller (instantaneous). Somehow I figured
there'd be a lag and things wouldn't be quite as snappy as with an IR
remote but I was wrong
- I love the fact that I can sit in a dark room and control my music
without having to turn on a light. Motion sensor activation of the
backlight is extremely useful
- Browsing long album and/ or artist lists can be cumbersome, despite
the wheel. It would be useful to have a button-combo or something of
the sort to allow you to jump to a letter in the alphabet.
- Being able to control any SB3, Receiver or Transported anywhere in
the house from a single remote is nice plus.
- Searching for something is a PITA. Whilst I appreciate there is
currently no alternative, I don't think the clickwheel cuts it as a
keypad. Any future version of the Controller would do well to consider
a mobile phone type arrangement whereby the keyboard can slide out such
as on the Nokia E65. The IR beats the Controller hands down in this
area, and is enough reason to keep the IR remote handy.
- A slightly larger screen would have been beneficial, both in terms of
the size of coverart and also in terms of text being more readily
visible without having to scroll across the screen.

All told, it's a good first effort that will undoubtedly improve as
software enhancements are made, albeit at this point I find it less
useful than I thought I would.

[slim] SBR network config/reset

2008-05-24 Thread jv8

I've got a 2nd Duet Receiver I'm trying to configure.  After a
hold-the-button receiver reset, how exactly does it initially connect
to the network? For example, in my house there are these networks:

1) wired ethernet
2) neighbor's open wifi
3) my WPA encrypted wifi
4) (I suppose this could be possible) peer-to-peer ad-hoc between SBC
and SBR?

How does the receiver talk to the controller for initial setup? I
originally had the receiver plugged into the wired net (since I assumed
the encryption would trip up config via wifi). The controller initially
saw it and I configured the SBR for my WPA wifi and pulled the cable.
Things were great until I ran into a problem and performed a receiver
reset without plugging it back into the wired LAN. The receiver got to
the slow flashing red light mode. I think this means it's connected to
the network and is waiting for setup. Unfortunately I can't see it on
my net. I fear it is associated with the neighbor's open router. So I
plugged it into the wired LAN and tried to perform another reset - but
the receiver won't reset! Holding the button down does nothing - it
still slowly flashes red. I don't see any activity lights on the wired
ethernet port. Power cycle does the same thing.

Is there another way to reset the SBR to get it back on my wired net?

Re: [slim] Connection reset by remote host

2008-05-24 Thread Dr . T

I, too, get frequent interruptions of internet radio stations. This
began right after upgrading (?downgrading?) to SqueezeCenter 7.0. I do
have a satellite internet connection, but that worked reliably when
using versions 6.0-6.5.

I do not believe bpa's explanation is correct. The interruptions occur
after 10-30 seconds of listening, not 2 minutes. I believe there is a
bug in the SqueezeCenter 7 code that affects only some users (depending
on their computer and network hardware). Perhaps if enough of us
complain, they'll get it fixed.

[slim] library problems with Various Artists

2008-05-24 Thread Jacobb

HI,
I just bought a Squeezebox Duet and I'm having problems with my
library.
The albums which has Various artists as artist do not show up as
albums under Home Artists Various Artists.
I only get those albums, that contain songs with various artists as
song artist, but still has an overall Album artist.
However, the individual songs from the Various Artists albums are
present under the 'All Songs folder in Home Artists Various
Artists. They are just not shown as individual albums.
Under Home Albums they are all shown.

The problem is, most of them are children CDs and have been given that
Genre as a tag; however, when Genre Children is picked, an album
folder named Various Artist correctly shows up - but it is empty. When
the All Albums folder is chosen, all the albums are there as they
should - just not in the Various Artists folder

Any ideas? In Zune media player, they are showing up correctly. Mp3tag
shows that the tags should be in order as well.

Help needed,
Jacob
