Re: [slim] Browsing music folder: SB3 doesn't show tracks in some dirs

2008-07-27 Thread Phil Leigh

pipetman;323171 Wrote:
I've started ripping my CD collection to flac a while ago and have
gathered a fair amount of files by now. I have them all neatly
organized in folders, so I select my music on the SB via browsing the
music folder (and not via tags, as album, artist etc).

Much to my dismay, I have noticed, that in many cases the SB doesn't
display tracks within a directory. Usually, by pressing the right arrow
on the SB remote, I can move down the directory tree and finally end up
at the track level. In the cases above, I get stuck at the parent
directory level and instead of tracks, the SB displays TITLE: (and
then the directory title). I have checked the path length and it is
always below 255 characters (so that shouldn't be an issue). What's
causing this? How can I fix this?

 Thanks. - p

can you explain what exactly (with an example) your directory
structures look like?

Also, you are using FLAC...how are you doing the ripping? The ripper
will normally insert tags and when/if SC rescans it will pick up those
tags...

Even if you use the Browse Music Folder method of navigating, it's a
good idea to make sure your tags are correct, since the act of browsing
inserts entries into the SC database if they aren't already there and
the tags are used at that point too IIRC.

Where is SqueezeCenter and SlimServer istalled? your PC or the server?

Are they both on the same system, because that is going to cause issues
i think as they will both be listening on the same port.

SqueezeCenter (and SlimServer) doesn't find the players, the players
find the server. Press and hold the power button on the remote, this
will cause the SB to restart. After the Logitec logo, when it it
setting up the network connection, press left and you should be able to
change the network setup, including which server it is connecting to.

Re: [slim] If this thing could only manage music...

2008-07-27 Thread pichonCalavera

I don't mind using external programs for organizing and tagging my music
(musicbrainz picard, mp3tag, foobar2000), because I like the idea of the
read-only access from Squeezecenter.

But these past days I used Amarok for a while again after many months
using only Squeezecenter, and I must say it was a breeze manipulating
the current playlist in Amarok, when I sit down to listen to some
music, I change my current playlist a lot, I add some albums, I delete
some songs, I listen, I decide I want to listen some song first, so I
rearrange the current playlist, then I add another album... etc. This
process is very very tedious with the Web gui from Squeezecenter in
comparision to Desktop music players like Amarok or Winamp.

Moose is a great app, but unfortunetly is Windows-only.

after further investigation, I found that I had severe crack pops
listening to Virgin Radio Classic Rock, but neither my ripped music
database, nor other radio channels such as BBC radio 3 behaved like
that.

The VRCR url that CRACKS is:
http://mp3-vc-128.smgradio.com/

Since I have another Ubuntu box running SS6.5.4 in my country house, I
ssh'ed my playlist folder and found that the URL was:
mms://wm.smgradio.com/vruk_vc_hi

This works fine.

So far, the Sun is shining again on my Squeezeboxes...

[slim] Dumb question from a newbie / Streaming from my website

Hi,
I'm wondering if there is any way to put my music collection at my
hosted domain website...? I would love to just ftp a bunch of mp3s to
my website and then stream them from there...
If I add the full url to an mp3 file at my domain as a favourite that
wotks just fine, but how do I make an index of songs, so that I can
browse my collection from my website on my Squeezebox?
I guess what I'm looking for is kind of a slimserverver that doesn't
requite running an installtion...
My website is running Microsoft .Net, so if there exists an .Net
project that could make the right interface to the Squeezebox it would
be great...
Any thoughts on how to achive this is greatly appreciated..! :O)

[slim] Linux - Amarok, Squeezecenter MySQL

Is there any way you can access the Squeezecenter MySQL database from

database.

Obviously the databases structures are set up differently but is there

silly to have to recreate one on another machine when possible remote
access is/might/may be possible.

If I understand you correctly, your Duet is hardwired into your network
via a router of some sort?

If so, check your router settings - in particular, do you have any
speedboost or QoS options which shape your traffic to prioritise some
types over others? Both of these can interfere with the constant stream
of packets which SC needs. Also, may be worth seeing if there is a
router firmware upgrade available.

Re: [slim] Rhpasody not playing

2008-07-27 Thread ajkidle

Maybe my SqueezeBox just needed to rest...

As of this morning (Sunday, Jul-27) everything works. I did nothing
different, just turned it on and it started working.

With regard to whether it was the latest nightly build or not, that's
definitely not a dumb question. I downloaded whatever was available
from the Slim site...I thought this was a nightly update, but maybe not
(link shown below.) Is there another place to go for pre-release
software?

http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/7.1/

Danniboi - if you go to the link above and install version 7.1, that
may fix things for you. (Yes, download it and install it on your
laptop, or wherever you run SqueezeCenter from.) After installing,
your controller should bug you to install new firmware -- let it. That
seemed to work for me, although I'm having a little difficulty
pinpointing what exactly fixed the issue. Should at least be a step in
the right direction.

Re: [slim] Browsing music folder: SB3 doesn't show tracks in some dirs

2008-07-27 Thread pipetman

Thanks for the reply.

I'm ripping with dbPoweramp and while not being too religous about it,
I pay attention to proper (meaning: consistent) tagging. However, I
haven't run an update of the SC database in quite a while (since I'm
browsing by folders only, anyway) - maybe that's the culprit (I'm
running an update of the db right now)?

My general directory structure looks like this:

Code:

  \\(mySAN)\public\music\lossless (flac)\genre\composer\album\tracks.flac

To give an example:

Code:

  \\Terastation\Public\Music\Lossless (flac)\Classical\Bach, Johann
Sebastian\Goldberg Variations - Murray Perahia\16-Variatio 15 a 1 Clav. Canone
alla Quinta in moto contrario.flac

Re: [slim] dropouts with hardwired Duet

2008-07-27 Thread bpa

To try to isolate the problem - if you can play an highish rate MP3
stream (e.g. Radio Paradise 128k or 192k). If it plays OK then it
looks like the PC is the problem.

Some Windows Ethernet drivers support a QoS features. All the built-in
and 3rd party features/utilsiites that enhance downloads, bandwidth,
response time etc. should be disabled as they typically mess up
realtime datastreams.

[slim] Hourly Skip Limit on Last.fm?

2008-07-27 Thread Siduhe

Using 7.2 and the inbuilt Last.fm plugin (as a subscriber) and came
across something I've not seen before . While listening to my
recommendations, where I tend to skip tracks I don't like and listen to
the ones I do (to help Last.fm get my tastes), I got a pop up on the
Controller which said you have exceeded your hourly skip limit.

Is this a new feature or just one I've not seen before? Couldn't find
anything on the Last.fm forums either. Strikes me as a bit odd, as I
always understood you should Ban songs you hate, Love songs you really
like, Listen to those you like and Skip the ones you're not that
bothered about.

Posting here because I've just tried the same using the Last.fm client
and don't seem to have a problem skipping tracks at all...

using mp3tunes is kind of what I'm looking for, but instead of paying

How do I make plaulists, that I can access fro the Squeezebox WITHOUT
having to have a PC running Slimserver in the background...?

Also the part about mounting an ftp-drive I don't quite understand..?
If that was to work without a connected PC/Mac the Squeezebox should be
able to mount the drive itself...?

Again my point is: To use space at my hosted domain, so that I son't
need to have a pc running at all times (and without using
mp3tunes/mylocker)...

Port 9000 is just for the web interface and when using players that
connect to stream.mp3 (i.e. non Squeeze players like WinAmp etc.).

Many NAS boxes need to use a different port because Twonky media server
also uses 9000, so no, it won't case problems with the Controller or
Reciever or the SB, SB2, SB3, Transpoter or SliMP3 :)

Ah ok, mounting the FTP as a network share etc. was assuming the PC was
still on :)

If you use SqueezeNetwork you should be able to enter the URL of any
playlist as a radio station and then skip forward and back through the

The limitation though is that you won't have a library as such, just a
bunch of static tracks in static playlists.

[slim] Controller Lag

2008-07-27 Thread mfpreach

Hi Everyone, I love the product but i'm having one issue.

After listening to music for awhile the SB Duet Controller will lose
connection to the SB and the computer and be really laggy until it
reconnects 30secs to 2 mins later.

I don't know why the controller keeps dropping off.
My SB is connected via ethernet , not wireless, and it is connecting to
a macbook also connected via ethernet with the new Slimserver 7.0.1

Lastly, I haven't been able to upgrade the controller firmware and it
gives me an error when i try and when I tried to manually download the
file it wasn't available anymore.

Any insight would be appreciated as I have to prime this device for my
luddite parents and constant drop offs will turn into frustrating phone
calls.

[slim] Hard drive failures

2008-07-27 Thread ctbarker32

Hi,

Very happy SB3 times 3 user here.

I have been running for about 3 years with a Linux shoe-box server
and multiple usb drives with over a terabyte of storage. I use
Clarkconnect linux. About 3,000 albums in mostly FLAC format.

This weekend I suffered my third hard drive failure in three years.
I've been using the Western Digital Essential usb external drives of
late for ease of swapping out when they fail which seems to be about
once year! I do have a backup to DVDs (about 100 per drive) which I am
already restoring to a new drive. Still, this is time consuming and
frustrating.

I know many people have different strategies for dealing with this but
for those of us with large collections it is very troubling. As long as
we have to depend on spinning disks it would seem we are doomed to this
sort of thing.

I hold out hope that solid state storage may one day bring a new level
of reliability to this situation but it may be a ways off in terms of
cost effectiveness, etc. At least drives are cheap. I bought a 500 gb
external replacement drive for $89 last night. I note that I can extend
the warranty from 1 to 3 years for $25 through Western Digital. Usually,
I don't pay for such things but I wonder if it would be prudent given my
experience?

Thoughts?

-CB

I agree that backup is crucial. This is part of the reason I'm moving

With the weird weather much of the world is having, I'd hate to lose my

Some drives come with a longer warranty than 1 year so you may want to
bear this in mind when choosing your next one.

Perhaps it might be worth buying two and using the 2nd one purely for
backups. Leave it disconnected when not required. Life will be easier
if and when your live one fails.

EDIT: You can also buy server quality drives which may or may not be
better suited to your setup.

I can't see that the extended warranty is very useful. When a drive dies
the most painful thing is the restoring and fixing things up. The cost
isn't much of an issue since by the time a drive fails, even if it is
after just a couple of years, a drive of the same size typically costs
a small fraction of what you paid for the drive in the first place.

Add to the fact that you normally need a new drive straight away and
therefore can't wait for the warranty replacement to happen and it
makes the extended warranty pretty much useless.

warranty -should- last longer than those with a shorter one. I say that
purely on the basis that manufacturers wouldn't offer longer warranties
if their drives usually failed in that time period ;-)

Re: [slim] Hard drive failures

2008-07-27 Thread Howard Passman

Question: How often do you have hard drive failures of your music
server?

- 1 or more a year
- 2 or more in mutliple years
- Never
- All the time

So far I've never had a hard drive fail on my own PC. I have the
occassional one fail at work, but we're talking 200+ PC's over an 8
year period. I would never say never :-), but it isn't often.

That said, I never rely on the USB drives that come with a hard drive
installed. I think that's asking for failures and if they do you you
have to send them off to retrieve the data. I prefer the drive
enclosures that you can install your own drive in or the multi bay
units that you install your own drives in. BTW, so far out of the 6 or
so hard drive failures I've had, sticking the drive in the freezer and
then running it long enough to get the data off has worked on all but
one so far. I did have to go so far as to freeze one in a block of
ice, but I did get eveything off of it.

One of the coolest devices to date is the BlacX. It come in USB,
FireWire and eSATA. It's reasonable, easy to use and you don't need a
holder for your drive. Just drop a drive in like a slice of bread and
bingo, you can read or write to it.

Re: [slim] Problem: Ethernet appears disconnected.

2008-07-27 Thread jma

Unfortunately, no luck. I have tried that multiple times now actually.
I select the language, then set up networking, then connect to an
ethernet network, and then the same message appears:

Problem: Ethernet appears disconnected.
Please check your network connection.

Is is possible for the ethernet port to have gone bad somehow? Is it
time to exercise the warranty?

I've contacted support via e-mail:

The reference number for your question is '080728-000843'.
You should receive a response by email from our support department
within the next business day.

To be honest this is the first real issue I've ever had with my beloved
squeezebox setup - the best gadget I've had in a very very long time
(even better to me than the iPhone!).

I've had a similar experience to Howard's. I've worked around PCs for
20 years now (man...I'm getting OLD!) and have experienced 3 drive
failures that I can remember. Those are pretty good odds considering
the hundreds (perhaps thousands) of machines worked with.

At home, I've had a drive start making strange noises. I replaced it
immediately rather than risking things.

Though the odds may be slim, it is a VERY painful experience,
especially if you don't do regular backups. And if you do, restoring
the data can be painful.

The way to look at it is that like taxes and death, hard disk failures
are inevitable. The drive may last 10-15 years, but one day it will
not work.

BTW, my experience has been with internal drives. I use external USB
drives only for moving data around or for temporary storage.

Had the same thing happen to me a few minutes ago, got a message on my
SB3. Maybe if you skip too many, it's no longer considered radio and
becomes more like on on demand service...

Call off the dogs! I am back in business. It appears that there was some
firmware issue or issue with the latest version of SqueezeCenter but I
updated both and I am back in business. Spent all day catching up on my
listening with the pooch in the listening room. Thanks all for the
tips.

Look how happy this dog looks!

There are 2 strategies I use. The first is to use the Zalman heatpipe
hard drive coolers in my server:

http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=zm-2hc2

They only cool the drives a few degrees C, but they seem to provide
excellent thermal and mechanical stability and the rubber mounting
system is great for reducing noise and isolating from shock. Not much
more expensive than a decent mounting kit. No moving parts, nothing to
wear out. I once had a drive cooler with 2 small fans that was
extremely loud and a dust magnet. These are much nicer.

The most recent strategy is to use drives designed for heavy-duty 24/7
usage. See my recent post here:
