Re: [slim] New user's experience on SC: Slow, unintuitive, generally not fun

2008-08-25 Thread Michael Herger
What bugs me much more is the navigation, when i enter into a music
folder, and chose an artist, and start playing the album, then the
silly SC does not stay in that folder, but goes out, and forces me to
choose music folder and making it load for ages.

Choose the Now Playing (jump on wake) or similar screensaver. This behaviour
is due to the default screensaver, which will jump out of where you left it.
Subject to changes, due to some recent discussion of the confusing nature of
this topic. But you can have the same behaviour as your friend by changing that
preference already.

I'm not pressing other buttons. Se my structure down-under. When I have

One By One by Foo Fighters, I would on the SB3 go 2 steps back and 1
step forward into F-J, then move into Foo Fighters and select the One
By One album. On the my Controller this is not possible. When I have
listened to Abbey Road and press one back I'm set back to Music
folder and have to select everything all over again.

-Music folder
-Music
|- A-E
|- Beatles
|- Beatles - Abbey Road
|- Beatles - Help!
|- F-J

This also means that I can't move from the Beatles album Abbey Road

actually have to start again from Music folder. Maybe this is only on
my Controller ;-/

I'm on the latest Controller firmware.

Re: [slim] Master volume control

2008-08-25 Thread Mar7in

Thank you. Exactly what I needed.

However, the logic is a bit strange. If I synchronize two players, A
and B, then I can choose to have A's volume synced to B's (in player
A's settings) while leaving player B's volume unsynced (in player B's
settings.)

This means that if I select player B from my Squeezebox Controller and
adjust the volume of player B, then A will follow. If, however I select
player A and adjust the volume, player B will retain its current volume
level. A bit counter-intuitive.

Another interesting thing is that it seems that synced volume means the
not only does the player's volume follow each other, but they are also
identical. If for example A is set to 50% then B will also be at 50%
volume. It could be interesting if only the ratio between the player's
volume was retained. If, for example, player A was at 25% and B at 50%
when they were synced then turning B up to 75% should cause A to go to
37,5% thus maintaining the ratio 1:2 between the volume of the two
players.

This could be a great thing if you are using fixed volume power amps
(i.e. no possibility to adjust amplification) for the two players. In
such a setup with different amps, speakers, and listening rooms you
would most likely never want the volume to be at the same absolute
volume level in both rooms.

Nevertheless, the above is only thought about future improvements.
Right now I'm happy to be able to sync my kitchen and living room
players.

/Martin

Re: [slim] Understanding Replay Gain

2008-08-25 Thread liffy99

Well, gradually going through the whole collection with Foobar 2000 and
adding replay gain (question : why doesn't Foobar show the RG details
in the RG column ? They appear if I look at Track Properties and if I
try to add RG again it tells me they are already there).

Most albums end up with a suggested level reduction, far fewer with an
increase. Typically many rock albums seem to get a 5-10db decrease and
jazz and classical a 0-5db decrease. A few (mostly classical) albums
get a small increase.

So, this will mean that when I listen to them with RG on, levels will
be much the same for the average perceived music loudness but I'll have
to crank the volume control round more to get back to the original
volume levels of the tracks that have had gain reductions.

One thing I'm still a little hazy about is the selection of this 89db
default. 89db from what ? If I were to alter the default level by the
amount that many albums have had their gain reduced by (say 9db) - to
98db, what would be the result ? All albums would still be at the same
average loudness, but louder overall (meaning less cranking of the
volume control on the amp). Although I assume I'd have to re-analyse
and tag all the files to conform to the new 98db default.

nearly there . . . .

You'll risk clipping. No check that, you'll have clipping. Just use
the volume dial, it's not that big of deal. It's a good level of
correction. It allowed for generous peaks without too much risk of
clipping. It's the same thing as recording too hot if you increase it.
Replay gain is not just peak volume it's more complicated than that.
You hit 0 db and you get clipping, square peaks. A lot of new music
has that already. You need to do a search on the loudness wars. If
you set yours to 98db you are going to have all kinds of problems. Any
album that has a replaygain of -2 or more will have clipping and not
just the peaks. You really need to trust the people that created this
and stay with their value, if you must raise it go to 91db at the most.

[slim] Wired or wireless

2008-08-25 Thread Al Jones

I've had my Transporter for nearly a year and have so far had no option
but to go wireless. I have never experienced a single drop-out playing
FLAC files from my ReadyNAS. Signal strength is 80-85%.

I will soon be installing wired Ethernet in my living room, because my
cable TV provider is switching to a set-top box that requires an
always-on Internet connection to fight piracy.

Instead of having a single socket put in, I could just as easily have a
double socket installed.

Given that my wirelss is perfect, is there any reason to consider
wiring my Transporter?

[slim] Volume control bug

2008-08-25 Thread FB67

I have been searching these forums and found out that there were issues
with volume control going crazy a few months ago.

I have just found out (by coincidence) that I can reproduce this error
by attempting to adjust the volume level while the Controller is
occupied by a search for an artist. The volume level turns to 100%
without possibility to avoid it be pressing the decrease-button.

It is very unfortunate since I have all my players connected directly
to active speakers, some of them quite powerful ;-)

System:
NETGEAR ReadyNAS NV+
SqueezeCenter version: 7.1.1 - 22377 @ Wed Aug 6 01:05:22 PDT 2008 -
Netgear RAIDiator - DA - utf8
IP-adresse for server: 192.xxx.xxx.xxx
Perl version: 5.8.8 sparc-linux
MySQL version: 5.0.24a-Debian_3.infrant1

I know the SqueezeCenter is a beta version but I also had this issue
with the first official releases of SqueezeCenter for ReadyNAS.

Does anyone know the status of this issue now?

Best regards

[slim] Problem solved: Can't connect to player

2008-08-25 Thread niklas.r

Hi, since I worked for weeks with this problem I just wanted to post how
I finally solved the problem.

Setup: Squeezebox Duet using All wireless (I use wireless router
Netgear WGT624)

Problem: OK connecting the controller to the network, and the receiver
connects too. Good WiFi signal. The button on the receiver stops at
solid blue light (handshake with network OK, but no connection to
player). Then I can't connect to the Squeezecenter player. Sometimes I
can connect but then the cover art partly fails. But the big problem is
of course that I can't connect to the server most times.

I went through all troubleshooting tips in the users guide, shutting
down all firewalls. -No success.

The problem was finally solved by deactivating the 108 MB/s nitro
option in the Wireless router. It is some compression operation that
apparently brings the Squeezecenter out of service.

I found the tip in FAQ No: 5952
http://slimdevices.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/slimdevices.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5952

This is a great site for solving problems, thanks.

11db ? So peak volume =100db (which is the same as Odb ?) ?

How does that then relate to the dynamic range of the CD medium at 96db
?

And 11db isn't much when looking at peaks at all (about 12 times
louder). Think of the contrast in a drum kit - one moment the snare is
being tickled with brushes, the next a tom tom given a thwack with a
stick - far more than 11db.

I think the consensus round here is to use ethernet if you have the
choice since it is **generally** more reliable than wireless. That

But if an extra ethernet socket is a low- (or no-) cost option then you
will have the choice of which to use. And you can always use the wi-fi

[slim] Losing wireless connection

2008-08-25 Thread Rockyjocky

Running a SB3 a Dell laptop as a music server.
The laptop is about 5 metres from the SB3 signal strength is 85% or
so.

If I connect the laptop hard wired into the router but leave the SB3
wireless, I get no problems at all.

If I have both the laptop SB3 wireless, the connection will drop out
every 30 mins or so.

Note that when it does drop out, my net connection remains active it is
only the Sb3 which loses connection.

The router desn't have a turbo mode for me to disable.

The wired wireless connections on the laptop have the exact same
settings.

I'd be grateful for any tips as i relly need to relocate the laptop
it's 3 x ext discs to a more suitable location but that means
wireless.

Try an environment scan and look for channel collision with another
wi-fi router on the same/similar channel.

New routers (i.e D-Link DIR-655) are better at keeping wi-fi throughput
going. I tested mine with 802.11n to server and then feeding FLAC to 3

[slim] Menu improved but translation lost?

2008-08-25 Thread ThomP

I just upgraded to 7.1 and I must say I love the new home menu - I've
waited for that ever since I got my Duet!

However, I have two questions - one I think is a bug, the other a
feature request:

1) My remote speaks danish. But when I add a shortcut to browse
artists or browse albums on my home menu they are displayed in
english - when I use the normal music library (musik bibliotek) they
are danish (gennemse kunstnere). Is it possible to add translations
manually somehow or do I have to wait for another upgrade?

2) The home menu would be even better if you could change the order of
the items!

[slim] Non-standard Countries

2008-08-25 Thread lrossouw

Hi

Just a heads up on those of you in a different country to the norm.

I recently lost the remote to one of my SB3s. Was considering to get
the controller to replace it as I thought it seemed pretty nifty.
However when I went to order the controler (or the replacement remote)
my country was not listed (I previously, pre-Logitech, ordered off the
web and my country was available as delivery destination).

I emailed them about this, and got this response:
Unfortunately due to organizational changes our web site no longer
ships to or sells to South Africa. This is now handled by the Logitech
South Africa webstore. I know they do not currently have the Controller
in stock and they are not selling replacement remotes. Unfortunately you
may have to wait for the controllers availability in your region as each
region is in control of what products they sell. I will ask about a
replacement remote. I do not think its right for you to not be able to
acquire a replacement. I will find out if we have a technical support
department in your region that can send you a replacement remote. I
will definitely find a solution to your problem I just need to do a
little research.

Was curious as to what they were going to do about it, but found the
missing remote right after this email and I told them not to bother.

My main problem with this is that a manager in South Africa who is
probably very unlikely to hear about the SB will now decide if we can
get future products. Luckily for me I am going to be in Singapore for
a couple of years, but this undermines the accessibility one has by
being able to directly order from SlimDevices.

Not a major gripe. Just for info.

Cheers
Louis

Danish translation has been provided by a community member - it has not been
officially translated. This will change very soon: as of SC 7.2 (to be released
by the end of this week) Danish will be part of the official translations. Thus
fully supported in SC and Controller.

Re: [slim] Wired or wireless

2008-08-25 Thread James Van Vleet

Assuming the cost is not too high for the second jack I would go to
wired Ethernet. It is true that the audio quality will be no different
if you are not getting any dropouts. But, while it is true that
wireless bandwidth is plenty for these devices, it is important to know
that is it shared bandwidth.

This means that if you have a 54mb G wireless router, everything
using wireless shares that 54mb.

So in the future if you happen to start watching movies off your laptop
or put in a new wireless device that needs lots of bandwidth, these
things will compete with your wireless transporter.

Heck, a new cordless phone might change your wireless experience.

As has been suggested, if little or no cost, have the double socket put
in for possible future use:
- maybe your WiFi will become troublesome some day (neighbor gets WiFi
causing interference)
- more and more AV devices need ethernet for features functions

[slim] Missing Playlists

2008-08-25 Thread gtasset

When I Rescan the Library after creating new playlists, the playlists
are found. However, they don't always show up in the SqueezeCenter
Music Library. Problem appears to be random with the playlists
sometimes appearing and sometimes not.

The playlists are m3u type created in Windows Media Player and stored
in My Playlists folder. I've checked Settings to ensure SqueezeCenter
goes to this folder for playlists.

Am running SqueezeCenter on an HP MediaSmart Server using Windows Home
Server for the OS.

Have about 5,000 songs in wma lossless files taking up 105GB of disk
space.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Could you try commenting out the log-bin line of your my.cnf? Then

I have not reported this as a bug yet--you're the first person I've
heard of that's having this same issue.

After a few more clean installs, my icon is still frequently red (I'd
say even usually), but the music keeps playing and my MiP mixes work
well so I'm going to leave it alone at this point. Something is
definitely a bit off though. Also, as you described, rebooting the
remote almost invariably leaves it hung at the Goodbye screen and I
have to pull out the battery to get it back up.

Re: [slim] Losing my mind...

2008-08-25 Thread egd

I've had pretty much the same experience with my Controller. I
absolutely cannot use it with a Receiver, because the whole shooting
match falls over with constant issues with the Receiver not connecting
to the server or the Controller not connecting to the Receiver, or
both. With an SB3 in place of the Receiver I'm at least (most of the
time) able to actually listen to some music. Inevitably though the
Controller loses its connection to the SB3 and I have the pleasure of
staring at either a red wireless signal indicator or the endless Please
Wait cycle. I'm waiting on a replacement Duet to arrive and hopefully
that will solve the problem, but my gut feel tells me it won't. What
frustrates me most is the SB3, Transporter and every other wireless
device in my house have no issues whatsoever using my Netgear WG102
WAP, yet the Receiver and Controller seem to have nothing but issues.

From my observations, it would appear the clear and rescan function

extremely fussy computer equipment necessary to make CDs. I loved
being able to archive vinyl by getting the levels right, letting
everything record, then going back and neatly topping and tailing and
creating track marks...but I never even knew that was possible until I

Re: [slim] Foobar 2000 query

2008-08-25 Thread m_l

You need to add a new column:

right click on the coloumns --- More... --- Add New --- give the new
column a name [mine is named AG for album gain and TG for track gain]
--- in the Pattern add the following for album gain
%REPLAYGAIN_ALBUM_GAIN% and %REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN% for track gain ---
Save All --- Close

Now select your new columns:

right click on the columns --- and look for AG and or TG [or whatever
name you gave them] select the name and it will now show in the
columns, you will need to repeat for the other column

If you the files don't have any AG or TG you will see a question

Re: [slim] what is best? itunes or folder sync of mp3?

2008-08-25 Thread FunkyOdor

I used to use the iTunes library file, but I found that it wasn't
honoring the iTunes artist and album sort fields, ironically. Joe
Satriani would show up under J instead of S even though I set the
sort artist and sort album artist tags as Satriani, Joe in iTunes.

When I switched to folder syncing and running a utility to export the
playlists as m3u files (with path changing as my iTunes is on Mac but
the SlimServer is on my ReadyNAS), all the sorting just worked.

That was back in the 6.5 days, however. I'm on 7.0.1 now but having
bothered to see if the iTunes sort fields are honored now because I
have a nice automated syncing process that works great. Why change
what ain't broken, right?

Excuse me, but WHAT A CROCK! What if you don't even own a PC - you
have to buy a monthly net account just to watch TV? And what happens
if you lose the net connection, the TV signal cuts off?

Does your cable company install the ethernet jack for free at the TV
location, or is that another expense YOU have to incur? And I hope you
realize they are using the net connection to track everything you
watch...this data will be sold to advertisers. Neilsen used to pay
people to voluntarily provide this data, now you're providing it
against your will and at your own expense.

to fight piracy - that sounds very suspicious. Are VCRs illegal? I
can pick up 10 or 12 HD channels over-the-air AND about 70 unencrypted
cable channels with a hi-def tuner card. How are they fighting piracy
if you can record the same programs for free with a $100 PC card? It's
all about CONTROL, denying you LEGAL behavior through an imposed
technical limitation.

Your SB (and for that matter, SqueezeCenter) doesn't add any tags
whatsoever -- they don't have that capability, or even the ability to
write to your music files. What format are your files? If they are MP3,
I bet you have conflicting ID3v1 and id3v2 tags, or maybe even some
stray APE tags. Make sure that Tag Rename is showing you *all* of the
tags, or for that matter, just make sure that you delete any id3v1 tags.
I don't know how you do that in TagRename, but it's easy in mp3tag.

[slim] SBC: Now Playing Wrong - Not Refreshing

2008-08-25 Thread BlueWombat

Hi -

I've tried to check the forums, but haven't seen any info on this
problem:

From time to time, the information on the Now Playing screens is not
properly updated. It will start out correct, but if I add songs or use
the Play button to start a whole new group of songs, the now playing
screen will continue to show the old songs. Often, when this has
happended the Receiver will continue to properly move on to new songs,
but the controller will not show the song changes, sticking to the
previous song as Now Playing. Also, at times, I have shuffled the
playlist, and the songs being played do shuffle, but the playlist
continues to show the old, unsorted order. Turning off the SBC and
restarting it cleans up and corrects the playlist - I do NOT have to
restart SqueezeCenter

I'm running 7.1 on an HP Mediasmart Server, which seems to run
smoothly, except for this problem. I have the latest firmware for the
SBC, which I am using with an SBR and a Squeezebox3. I am running also
MusicIP, and have installed CustomBrowse and AlienBBC.

Newer routers will allow you to run full uncompressed streaming
wireless as long as you have excellent signal strength on all the
devices, I have done it with a wireless laptop, wired NAS (music
collection) and wireless Squeezebox. Routers like the Dlink dir655 not
only offer draft wireless N but also offer the improvements of multi in
multi out (MIMO) and higher signal strength.

Perhaps. Personally, I find that, while Slim was very american in some
ways (mostly the good ways), I've stuck with them because they're very
unamerican in other ways.

Good ways that they are american:
* entrepreneurship: company was started more or less in a garage with a
wire-wrapped prototype (the sliMP3).

Good ways that they are not american:
* open source
* open box - they always snap pictures and post them, showing us what's
inside the box so we don't have to disassemble them - although I did
disassemble my SB1s and SB3s - haven't opened up a Duet receiver yet.
* open forums, open to suggestions about improvements
* sense of humour - announcements that turn out to be april fools
jokes.

Delete the entire cache folder (wherever it is on your system) and
rescan.
It's NOT the artwork cache but the database you need to clear to fix
this. No it's NOT a guess.

But then again, this might simply encourage those of us Americans prone

The cable is the Network, the smallest possible network only 2 pionts
but the same ethernet protocolls apply IP-adresses and such, but thats
not the piont.

The SB's MUST have connection to SqueezeCenter software or
SqueezeNetwork otherwise they are useless.

For local files you install SqueezeCenter, the client SB is not so
smart it nows nothing, every command pressed on an ir-remote or
controller goes to the server software (SqueezeCenter) who runs the
show and streams the proper file's to the SB and issue other comands
such as volume.
The database index of your files is in SqueezeCenter so the SB would
not find anything without it, it can only play streams sent to it, it
does not have enough brain to find files and read tags on it's own.
If you have a classic squeezebox SB1,2,3 even such things as the
graphics is on the screen is made by the SqueezeCenter.

But remember that at the time the MD was introduced, you needed an
extremely expensive computer to properly do audio recording. Heck, I
bought a new PC after having MD for a couple years and even it had a
tendency to drop a lot of samples when I tried to use it as a
recorder.

Not that I really mean to defend Sony here...they eventually did come
up with a PC MD drive, but of course they deliberately crippled it for
music use which, combined with its absurdly slow speed, made it largely
uninteresting to just about everyone.

I still find it less nerve-wracking to capture analog sources via a
standalone CD recorder, then copy the bits into the computer for
prettying up.

You are talking about Sony. They own (owned) a major record label.
Afraid of piracy is too weak a phrase.

Of course, Sony has always been a bit schizophrenic. Part of them sells
to studios and wants to be able to record bit perfect.

Yeah, they have that one model left. There are no more consumer models

The format it dead from the perspective that Sony won't be rolling out

And 11db isn't much when looking at peaks at all (about 12 times
louder). Think of the contrast in a drum kit - one moment the snare is
being tickled with brushes, the next a tom tom given a thwack with a
stick - far more than 11db.
Yes but the snare being tickled by the brushes is not starting at 89.
I would hope not at least. Like I suggested before, read up on the
loudness wars, it will really help you understand dynamic range and
what's going on now in pop and rock recordings. As you use replay gain
you'll see that older recordings have smaller numbers and the newer ones
much larger. The are making all the sound louder with no regard to
dynamic range. In the older albums you could have a difference in what
you were talking about of maybe 25dbs and you would really notice the
snap of the drum, and now that might be 6 or 7. It doesn't have the
impact that it use to have. Everything in the mix is loud. It makes
for more fatiguing listening too. Sorry if I'm not explaining this so
it makes sense. pfarrell could probably do a much better job of
explaining all this. :)
