Re: [slim] BBC App or iPlayer plugin?

2010-02-10 Thread bpa

The BBCiPlayerExtra can be used to generate a list for any of the BBC
feed so perhaps this one may be more certain of including Elain Paige
http://feeds.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bbc_radio_two/music/easy_listening_soundtracks_and_musicals/list

You can try the URL in your browser to see what programs are included
in this easy listening soundtracks and musicals list.

All you need to is change the URL in the favorite you have just created
- it will list all programs in category not limited to top 10.

The plugin is necessary for two reasons:
1. The URL in the RSS list (which is the source feed for
BBCiPlayerExtra) is not playable by SBS - it needs the plugin to get the
playable URL.
2. The default playable URL will be Flash/AAC which needs to be
transcoded for Boom to play.

This may change.
1. For new products such as Radio and Touch - there is an Applet in
development which will enable these players to find and play Listen
Again programs while connected to mysb.com.
2. For Boom and older players - the BBC now have WMA versions of all
programs so what is needed is a list of the URLs of the BBC programs in
WMA which can be read by mysb.com(i.e. opml or RSS format). So far
there is a list of BBC WMA program here
http://beebotron.org/index3lite.php?reload but it is not immediately
usable by mysb.com. There is also iplayerconvertor (
http://www.iplayerconverter.co.uk/reciva_instructions.aspx ) which
provides an RSS list of programs (which is unable by mysb.com) but for
RealAudio. I expect there will be some sort of suitable list available
soon just not sure how complete it will be.

Have you tried a factory reset? Perhaps something isn't being cleared

Very true. A workaround is to buy a small, cheap LCD screen and
connect it to one of your AVR's video outs to perform this function.
S-video or Composite will do, it's just menu navigation and low-res
album art.
It looks cool in your setup and I'd guess if used regularly it would
likely pay for itself in a year with lower energy consumption vs a big
40+ screen.

I used this cheap LCD option for several years on my Yamaha AVR for
digital cable music and Yamaha's (overly simplistic) Internet Radio and
USB input functions.
It is still used sparingly today since my graduation to a REAL
streaming device, thank you SqueezeBox. :)

not very well. For example, I had a Western Digital TV box that played
flac and ogg, but sold it when I found out it didn't even manage gapless
 album playback.

I've been noticing this myself. I think this is an area of competition
for Logitech that will keep them trying to differentiate themselves.
Gapless playback always seems to be at the bottom of the priority list
with media streamers and mp3 players. Logitech differentiate themselves
here, but the fact is that most people don't care and don't even know
what it is.

Somebody else had an interesting view on this - that devices like this
will bring audio streaming out of its niche status and bring it to the
masses, thus keeping the market viable for Internet Radio stations and
companies like Logitech.

In theory this should not matter. I've taken my Boom and SB3 to
numerous other WiFi networks with varying security encryption types
and settings, never had a problem.

If you have not tried already I'd suggest a complete network reboot:
- unplug router (leave unplugged)
- turn off computer (leave off)
- unplug all SB players (leave unplugged)
- turn off any/all devices on the network (leave off)

Now bring your network back up and in this order:
- plug router back in, wait for it to COMPLETELY reboot
- turn computer on, wait for it to COMPLETELY reboot
- Launch SC/SBS, wait till it COMPLETELY loads and is running
- plug SB players back in
- best to not power on other networked devices just yet before SB
players are functioning

Re: [slim] professional grade router

2010-02-10 Thread bobkoure

I think I'd use a Snapgear 300 series for a firewall, something wireless
for a wireless access point, and a separate modem.
I put these in at client sites, where they're rock solid, plus I've
personally been using a Snapgear 560 for quite a few years now (this one
does fail-over - I have multiple connections to the internet -, and, as
well, has a separate processor for doing encrypt/decrypt on multiple
busy IPSEC connections).
Snapgear's been successively acquired by a number of
increasingly-larger companies over the years, but, through all that,
they've continued to provide free firmware updates. They're also really
good about supporting open source work. If you check out s/wan, for
instance, you'll see snapgear engineers working there.

I've had to reboot once in eight (nine?) years. I think that may have
been a power surge. Got a power conditioning UPS and haven't had an
issue in the last five or six.

What else? IPSEC's easy to setup, PPTP (server and client) rock solid.
Ditto L2TP. Built-in SNORT, plus intrusion detection. (you can go dark
for a particular address if you detect they're port probing).

I'm a DD-WRT fan, too, but, compared to these boxes it isn't even
close. However, WRT may be enough for your needs.

[slim] Commercial Idea

2010-02-10 Thread FredFredrickson

I was posting this in a different thread, but I thought I'd post it here
too...

I really wish they smacked you in the face more with the fact that you
can sync rooms in their ads. The videos I've watched don't nearly
exemplify how cool a squeezebox system is. I think it'd appeal to a
crowd at my age group (I'm 23) moreso, especially if you touted
integration with ipod touches and itunes..

Here's my idea:

What they need is a good party scene- tons of people, where everybody
in one room is listening to a song, but it gets too crowded, so they
open the door to another room, and jam in there, but it's silent...

The host picks up the duet, clicks the sync button, and suddenly the
music continues in both rooms.

A quick camera flythrough could show two synced zones, and then the
kitchen with somebody fiddling with a radio playing seperate music
altogether..

That alone is why you should get squeezeboxen, not just an mp3 player.

The videos I've seen on amazon and such just look like a varied bunch
of players, and although they sometimes illustrate sync abilities, it
doesn't always make sense. Sometimes the visible stream of music flying
through the air doesn't make the connection for me- and the music I hear
I assume is commercial music.

Also- I think commercials that concentrate on one strength at a time
would be good. Have a series of commercials.

Just putting that out there..

That seems odd. That root directory would be huge and it would be
impossible to browse. What would one do with album name collisions

  Knife, The

  Nine Inch Nails

Total Tracks: 43,202

Windows XP Desktop Running SBS 7.42:
Total Tracks: 43,202

Media Monkey:
43,202 Files

ACC on Windows XP desktop (not really sure how to set it up on
ReadyNAS):

Re: [slim] Who or what is Osama?

2010-02-10 Thread Goodsounds

I believe he works in tech support.

Many forum visitors don't understand that these forums are not intended
for tech support communications. Looking at some of Osama's recent
posts, he's trying to direct people to the normal tech support channels
for help with their problems.

I found your comments to be unnecessarily harsh. His actions and
comments are likely what he has been directed to do. How do you like it
when someone at work who knows mostly nothing about what you do, or how
you do it, offers unknowledgeable criticism? I'd suggest that's what
you've done.

But I don't expect people with problems with Music Magic to be referred

It's got nothing to do with losing resolution in an absolute sense -
you still have 16/20+ bits. It's the value in them that is changing and
thus the max SNR and dynamic range.
You really need to read this thread fully - especially Sean's

Re: [slim] Russound Keypad Interface - Interest Level?

2010-02-10 Thread someonewho

Anyone tried this yet? Questions? Problems?

I've posted a new version v02 to the site referenced above.
Improvements in this version include:

a. The program now supports multiple Squeezebox players as sources to
the Russound controller(s). Each player can be controlled
independently.

b. The program's configuration settings are now contained in a separate
SqzRuss.ini file.

c. Stability and error handling have been improved, particularly for
fatal errors such as lost connections to the Russound controller or
Squeezebox Server.

I'd be glad to help anyone that wants to try it.

[slim] Warner quits free music streaming

2010-02-10 Thread mortslim

Warner quits free music streaming
By Ian Youngs
Music reporter, BBC News

Record label Warner Music has said it will stop licensing its songs to
free music streaming services.

Companies like Spotify, We7 and Last.fm give free, legal and instant
access to millions of songs, funded by adverts.

Warner, one of the four major labels, whose artists include REM and
Michael Buble, said such services were clearly not positive for the
industry.

That raises questions over the future of free streaming, which is
popular with fans but not lucrative for labels.

Spotify has seven million users in six European countries and is in
negotiations to launch in the US.

Ninety-five per cent of those fans use its free service, hearing
adverts between songs, while 250,000 pay a monthly fee to get it on a
mobile and with no ads.

“ [It] is not the kind of approach to business that we will be
supporting in the future ”
Edgar Bronfman Jr, Warner Music
Two-and-a-half million people use We7's free offering, while Last.fm is
also free in the US and UK.

Other popular audio services include Deezer, Pandora and Grooveshark.

Warner chief executive Edgar Bronfman Jr said: Free streaming services
are clearly not net positive for the industry and as far as Warner Music
is concerned will not be licensed.

The 'get all your music you want for free, and then maybe with a few
bells and whistles we can move you to a premium price' strategy is not
the kind of approach to business that we will be supporting in the
future.

It is not clear whether Warner will remove its music from existing
services or decline to do deals with new outlets.

He said the focus would be on promoting streaming services that require
payment, which he said could appeal beyond those who currently pay for
downloads in stores such as Apple's iTunes.

The number of potential subscribers dwarfs the number of people who
are actually purchasing music on iTunes, Mr Bronfman said.

Fans could pay a monthly fee direct to a streaming service, as with
Spotify, or get access to the music as part of a deal for a mobile
phone, broadband connection or another gadget.

Such subscriptions could be taken up by hundreds of millions if not
billions of people, most of whom are not today either buyers or
certainly heavy buyers of music, Mr Bronfman said.

And they would be much more profitable than per-track downloads in the
long term, he added.

The main legal streaming services have deals with most major and
independent record labels and pay royalties for each song played.

But the amount is far less than a label would earn if that song was
downloaded or if they got a slice of a listener's monthly subscription.

“ It would definitely be a tremendous blow to a service like Spotify if
Warner were to withdraw their catalogue from the free service ”
Paul Brindley, Music Ally
Mr Bronfman's comments come just weeks after another major label,
Universal, said Spotify was well on the way to proving its commercial
viability.

Spotify is a very sustainable financial model - full stop, Rob Wells,
senior vice president of Universal Music Group International, said in
January.

Paul Brindley of digital music consultants Music Ally said the other
major labels were unlikely to follow Warners' lead.

There's a fairly widespread suspicion that free streaming services
just aren't ever going to make enough money, he said.

But it does seem to be that Warner is taking a firmer stand than the
other major labels in terms of opposing a free ad-funded model.

It would be an absolute tragedy if they were to adhere to that to such
a degree that in their renegotiations with Spotify, they withdrew their
content without even giving them a chance to see how well they could
convert their users to the premium version.

“ The consumer is in a world where they want things right here, right
now, and if you don't give it to them they'll steal it ”
Jon Webster, Music Managers' Forum
It would definitely be a tremendous blow to a service like Spotify if
Warner were to withdraw their catalogue from the free service.

A Spotify spokesman declined to comment.

We7 chief executive Steve Purdham said Warner and the other major
labels had always been consistent in their concerns about ad-funded
and free services.

But they have also been very supportive of us. I think Edgar's
comments are more a reflection that subscription services is currently
the key focus for the industry and I strongly support that view,
especially in the mobile arenas.

Jon Webster, chief executive of the UK's Music Managers' Forum, which
represents artist managers, said the industry must support services that
tempt fans away from piracy.

Anything that's going backwards is denying where the world's going,
he said.

New media has to give the consumer what they want and the consumer is
in a world where they want things right here, right now - and if you
don't give it to them, they'll steal it.

There are new business

Update:

We got in touch with Tom Conrad, the CTO of Pandora, who had this to
say regarding the effect this would have on the company. He writes:

This all started with Edgar Bronfman's comment on the Warner conference
call where he was addressing free on-demand services such as Spotify
that are directly licensed. Pandora operates under a different licensing
structure and won't be impacted by Warner's apparent decision with
respect to free, on-demand services.

I just wanted to say a big thankyou to trickl for posting the message
about fixing my problem. I have finally got it working! For anyone else
having the same problem heres how I fixed it:

I am using a Qnap 209 II with Linux (Ajax 3.1) I updated ssots to
version 4.4 so I could update the squeezecenter software to 7.4.1 But
everytime I tried to log into mysqueezebox.com I kept getting an error
saying invalid username and password.

After about a week of trial and error I installed ssots 4.1 (which came
with 7.4.0 which I updated to 7.4.1 from the logitech website).

I then downloaded the audio::scan 044 which I downloaded from the link
in trickl's suggestion. Extracted this and renamed it scan.so I used
Winscp to get inside the Qap and find the original scan.so (by searching
for it)Renamed it to scanold.so and copied the new one across.

After rescanning my library I can now see my wma files! Thanks for all
your help Trickl, Parky, cees and everyone who helped :)

Smart gain, uses the album replay gain tag, rather than the track gain
tag, if the playlist has tracks from the same album. On a mixed album
playlist it uses track gain tag.

The idea is that the relative volume levels of tracks from an album is
maintained.

Replay Gain is also quite handy if you play your music loudly (for whole
house listening perhaps). Massive Attack's Angel (from the album
Mezzanine) blew my speakers when it came on (my Squeezebox was set to
random play and I was rummaging around on a different storey at the
time).

Cost me £500 to get the woofers replaced.

Smart Gain is always on now. :-(

Re: [slim] Logitech - please work with Pandora for 192kbps streaming!

Rather than wait for Pandora or Logitech to blink, try this work around
- Use the Pandora One desktop applet (a very nice impovement over Open
Pandora). Because it's coming off your PC and not SqueezeCenter your
Pandora stream should be 192. Pipe it to the SB via your wave input
entry in Favorites, using the WaveInput plugin (a pain to configure,
but worth the effort):

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/WaveInput_plugin

This should take the Pandora stream right off your sound card, with
whatever quality level you have set for wav in your SC/SB Settings -
enjoy.

[slim] Trying to get Squeezebox to send Now Playing to Trillian Astra without writing a app

2010-02-10 Thread mkanet

It seems everywhere I look there's a plugin for apps Astra, MIRC, Aim,
Yahoo, MSN, etc to accept Winamp, WMP, MPC currently playing song.

Several years after asking for a feature request in Slimserver,
Squeezecenter, Squeezebox to provide a clever way to support feeding
multiple apps with some kind of Now Playing status, without success,
I thought it might be just easier for squeezebox to pretent it's Winamp
or Windows Media Player when providing the currently playing song for at
least having some way of getting now playing to *Trillian Astra*

I spent a lot of time figuring out a way to do something with Last.FM's
audioscrobbler RSS feed; but, since I'm not a software engineer, I can't
make an app which simply updates Currently Playing to all social
networking, chat apps via audioscrbler. I think that would be a great
idea; and, probably the best way to do it.

Perhaps there are other people here who use trillian or Astra which
would love to have their Squeezebox specific clients' playback show up
in their status. Trillian Astra developers seem to feel WinAmp, Windows
Media Player, Itunes, even Media Player classic to have native support
for now playing.

Does anyone know have an easy way to get this working in Astra? Its
hard to believe Logitech Squeezebox isnt popular enough for Trillian
Astra to support it.

I even tried something ridiculously desperate by putting my
audioscrobbler RSS link under Trillian's status, custom message... but
doesnt accept URLS.

I dont know, maybe what I'm asking is still a little too ahead of it's
time and need to be patient for Squeezebox to become even more popular
for people like Trillian to be excited to support natively

I searched some kind of tool that support Trillian Astra, but

I've heard in the many years I've been trying to sort this out. The
biggest problem (I think) is that people don't clarify that there are 2
issues:
1) signal to noise (dynamic range) which goes down with any level of
attenuation and...
2) bit resolution

Sean clarified this nicely.

Re: [slim] Trying to get Squeezebox to send Now Playing to Trillian Astra without writing a app

2010-02-10 Thread mkanet

Thanks for your suggestion. I upgraded from Pidgin to Astra as soon
as Astra become available via beta. I used Pidgin for longer than you
might guess; and, definitely prefer it over the last generation Trillian
because of the active plugin support...

Please dont beat me up for saying this... because it might make you
pretty upset, but lets face it, Pidgin badly needs a complete overhaul
to update itself for modern OS's; and, also really could use the ability
to run in a browser without having to install a client... even Meebo
does that. I'll definitely consider switching back to Pidgin; but,
waiting for a completely renovated, next generation version (the same
way classic Trillian evolved to Astra may take years to catch up. Below
is a screenshot of my desktop with Astra... blending into all modern day
apps... However, no matter how great Astra is, it still doesnt have
Squeezebox support damnit! :)

SBS usage accounts for only a tiny slice of all media player usage, and
Trillian is similarly (un)popular. The intersection of users of both
 applications is vanishingly small.

If you're willing to switch IM clients, I believe there are plugins for
Pidgin that will pull info from Last.fm and apply it to your profile.

Re: [slim] $25 off VortexBox Appliance

It's easy to change the VortexBox default and have CDs ripped to a
directory structure where albums are placed in separate artist
 directories:

 artist1
 --- album1
 --- album2
 --- ...
 artist2
 --- album1
 --- album2
 --- ...

This is what I do on my VortexBox Appliance.

That's about perfect. Back to my original question (I really didn't
mean to hijack this thread, but I guess we're past that), is it possible
to use for the artist1, artist2, etc. what would go in the
ARTISTSORT tag? This would make the artists actually sort properly when
directly browsing the music directory. If you can't do this, then the
directory ends up looking like iTunes got a hold of it, which is just
wrong.

I have never even heard of the ARTISTSORT tag. So VortexBox doesn't
create it. How do you decide what goes in the ARTISTSORT tag?

VortexBox uses the ARTIST and ALBUM tags that are returned by FreeDB or
MusicBrainz (the two online CDDB databases it checks) to create the
directories where the encoded music files are placed. These databases
do not have ARTISTSORT information. So the answer to your question is
NO.

The ripping/encoding/tagging program used by VortexBox is ripit. You
can find more information at http://www.suwald.com/ripit/news.php

Why would I be upset? I'm a Linux guy. I use ugly software all the
time, and I like it that way. :)

As for a fancier default interface for Pidgin... that's not going to
happen. See:

http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#LookFeel

They have the typical open-source attitude of If you don't like it,
the source config files are located over there. Open source
developers are also hostile toward scope creep, which is why you
probably won't see them doing a web service like Meebo.

All that being said, you can probably change GTK themes to make Pidgin
blend in with your desktop a lot better.

Re: [slim] Warner quits free music streaming

2010-02-10 Thread Justme

I wonder if with Spotify they will still allow their songs on the paid
service but just removed from the free service.

Unfortunately, we don't have Spotify here yet in Germany (we often lag
behind oddly enough) but as soon as it came out I was considering the
paid option. I hate ads and yet would love this type of service.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v3

2010-02-10 Thread SilverRS8

 Hi Frank,

Giving another go with the new version, same track count issues...

 Music stored on ReadyNAS.

 ReadyNAS built-in SBS 7.42:
 Total Tracks: 43,202

Windows XP Desktop Running SBS 7.42:
 Total Tracks: 43,202

 Media Monkey:
 43,202 Files

ACC on Windows XP desktop (not really sure how to set it up on
 ReadyNAS):
 Total tracks: 41707

 Hmm...

I thought you'd do some investigation on a smaller subset to see if
there are differences and where they actually are?

ACC performs a query with the following joins:

join contributors AS album_artist on albums.contributor=album_artist.id
left join tracks on tracks.album=albums.id
left join genre_track on genre_track.track=tracks.id
left join genres on genre_track.genre=genres.id
join contributor_track ON tracks.id = contributor_track.track and
contributor_track.role in (1,6)
join contributors AS track_artist on contributor_track.contributor =
track_artist.id

So this also means that if certain tags are not used, they will not be
included in the query results. So I suspect that you have a number of
tracks (43,202 minus 41707 to be exactly) which are not tagged fully.

Frank
