Re: [slim] Logitech

2010-03-17 Thread seanadams

SBC end-of-life has been public knowledge for ages, and the price has
dropped accordingly.

Contrary to how some might think manufacturing works, if the
replacement product is late, you can't instantly crank out more of the
previous one. Besides the manufacturer's problems, some of their
suppliers would flat-out refuse to ramp back up for a limited run of
obsolete components. (I'm speaking of hardware production in general
here).

The other possibility is the clean cut-over. If you can even
orchestrate it, this upsets customers far more, because you have loads
of people who are disappointed at having just bought the previous
product.

So you drop the prices, then you have a little down-time, and then you
ship the next thing. I'll give you that Ante-Logi, the down time would
have been very short because otherwise we'd have promptly gone bankrupt.
Look on the bright side - at least they're using the time to improve the
next product.

Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience

I'd agree, that would be easy if that was how it worked...

But that isn't how it works. To get to this state all I did was create
 the three sync sets.

Taking the Upstairs set as an example, the dropdown lists are as
 follows:

Kitchen - Unsyncronized or master, Office, Radio
Office - Unsyncronized or master, Kitchen, Radio
Internet Radio - Unsyncronized or master, Kitchen, Office

I honestly don't know what I am supposed to set to get the various
players into the right sync sets. I expect I can work it out by
experimentation, but it is far from obvious (to me) without said
 experimentation.

At long last I've improved the interface a bit. Ok, not much.

Now The Synchronizer has the option of creating a new sync set, using
the current configuration of players in the system. Set-up the players
the way you want them synchronized, and go create a new set with the
button checked, and voila, you've saved that configuration. You can
edit it later, should you so desire.

In version 0.10 at
http://www.koldware.com/SlimStuff/Synchronizer-0.10.zip

Give it a spin, let me know if it works for you.

If you still don't like the interface, feel free to suggest a new one.
I'm willing to listen.

No not really. It may be a 7.5 issue. I don't know if they changed the
remote access method already. Remote access is not possible anymore when
they move to SQlite but if i'm correctly this is not yet implemented in
v7.5.

When 7.5 is released I'll make sure ACC is compatible (if the move to

Richer Sounds (another UK store) is showing Squeezebox Receivers for
sale for £79.99, a fantastic price. If you don't have the controller to
configure it, there is a 3rd-party developed program that allows you to
configure it from your PC. Once configured, it'll function the same as
an SB3. I'm definitely considering grabbing one or two.

Re: [slim] Adding All Stations To Home Screen?

2010-03-17 Thread bpa

In the interest of placating a technophobic user
I would have thought showing a list of 10k stations would intimidate
and not placate such a user.

All you need to do create a text file with list of station names and
their associated URLs and then use a text editor to change it into an
OPML file by a couple of cut paste and replace strings. Then make the
OPML a favorite. If the OPML file is on a web server it can be used via
MySB.com

However your main difficulty is getting the list of stations as
collating and maintaining station lists are usually done by commercial
organisations (e.g. reciva, shoutcast, rokuradio, mikesradioworld,
radiotime etc.) and do not make it easy to dump a complete list of
stations.

Seems silly to me too - but not to the user.

The idea seems tb to support the short wave radio image: somebody
sits down with the thing and just tunes different stations, sort of
exploring the air waves. There's a dial: just twiddle it and see
different stations.

Why can't they drill down a few - or a half-dozen - levels like

Re: [slim] Logitech

2010-03-17 Thread linvale

Sean,

It's really good to see your post and give a very reasonable
explanation of what is an inevitable chain of events. From the time the
information on the touch leaked out and pre-orders were accepted we've
seen a team struggling to matching customer expectations with what is
techniocally possible. Across the message board we have seen confusion
and frustration, and a lot of folks really taking shots at what are
absolutely amazing products often blaming the product for issues that
are likely related to the environment in which it is installed - but
sometimes it seems as a result of challenges in quality control and a
team of really able programmers/engineers stretched a little too far in
terms of mismatched timelines and quality requirements. I guess this may
inevitable when a niche product becomes acquired by a mass market
oriented supplier.

Your presence on the boards is always a source of tremendous insight
and understanding to the product, it would be good to hear from senior
Logitech executives that they do understand the frustration felt by many
customers around this, that they have a clear vision and plan for the
product range and that they will let a very committed and loyal customer
base help them in making the product line a real success in the mass
market by listening (and responding) to feedback. A product based on
open-source technology operated by a company that is used to a hardware
based, closed technology, short lifecycle is in a tough spot - and the
touch seems to be caught just there.

It would be great to see Logitech develop a model where early access to
major upgrades is made available to those who enjoy the technology
challenge and opportunity that comes with leading edge products - this
may be more than is seen with the present beta testers (or are these
those who buy the products with X.1 software releases).

I am glad to see Logitech holding back on the launch of Touch. Indeed
it seems to me that the product reputation will stand or fall by whether
this will just work - if it does it will be a great success in the
consumer market place. If not

If you sync players, proxied streaming is used automatically because
sync is impossible otherwise.

If you want to have a single player use proxied streaming, the setting

Unfortunately for those of us on this forum, the problem seems to be
much larger than one product:
SB3 obsolescence, replacement product Touch.
Touch announced, pre-orders taken... SEVERAL months later, no firm date

Radio released, battery coming soon. After several months,
pre-orders taken. Finally released, only to be IMMEDIATELY out of stock
with several month back-order (could not even fulfill the pre-orders!).
Receiver no longer available. Official notification that it's not
been discontinued (although several statements to the contrary by sales
support). Product apparently removed from Logitech web site (at least
in US)... Link re-added to Logitech website, but no way to place order
(at least in US). Link has since disappeared again!

[slim] Bitperfect playback with Squeezeplay?

2010-03-17 Thread manzoku

I'm new to the forum, so hope this is the right place to ask.

I've installed Squeezebox Server 7.4.2 on my media PC (running XP SP3)
in preparation for a Squeezebox Duet that I'll be getting next week.
The PC is already set up for bitperfect playback, which I check by
confirming that I can play a 5.1 DTS file (in WAV wrapper) correctly
through my AV receiver using Foobar 2000.

I've tried both Squeezeslave 0.9-95 and Squeezeplay (from the 7.4
nightly downloads) as software players, and while Squeezeslave works
fine with DTS playback as long as the volume control in the Web
Interface is at Max, with Squeezeplay as the player I just get noise
(volume controls in both Web Interface and Squeezeplay at Max).

This would seem to indicate that the DTS file is being altered by
Squeezeplay and is no longer bitperfect. Has anyone else experienced
this, or have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

The real problem for those that follow these forums, is that there is no
Logitech involvement. What remains is a small, very committed bunch of
ex Slim Devices employees, trying their best. but where is the steering
comments of Logitech business management - the equivalent of Sean or
Dean coments / actions.

In this vacuum, rumours expand, change. Sales and support messages /
actions are not aligned with the Logitech developers that post on these

In this climate, the loyal customer base starts to question the future
commitment, but even then no Logitech management comment.

In the real world, a large company such as Logitech will never have the
connection to the users that Dean and Sean had. Its a concept that
simply can't scale. I bet Dean and Sean spent many nights snorting
solder flux or brainstorming about product directions, stuff that large
companies simply can't do.

While I am no expert analyst on Logitech's whole product line, I do own
a number of their products from outside the Slim Devices world. None of
those other products have anywhere near the exposed software that the
SBS/SC has. None has anywhere near the active and vocal user community.

I agree that there is an impedance mismatch between the users here and
Logitech corporate management. But I don't expect that Logitech will change.

[slim] Saving Search As Favorite: Any Hope?

2010-03-17 Thread PeteCress

For instance:

Home | Internet Radio | Search | (specify WHYY)

That search will return a whole list of hits - mainly the names of
shows.

Click on a show like Voices in the Family and it will return a list
of recent episodes.

Both searches would be very useful to save as favorites.

Not the results, just the search - so when you choose it from the
Favorites list, it performs that search and shows the results.

Second best would be saving the result set.

Is there any room in the architecture for saving either a search or a
result set as a Favorite?

[slim] Updated Plug-Ins: Radio Froze, Had To Reboot

Using http://127.0.0.1:9000/settings/index.html

Squeezebox Server | Plugins:

- un-checked Pandora,

- checked KidsPlay,

- Clicked Apply

Got the usual, This will take a minute... message while the service
shut down/restarted.

But the radio stopped working and froze: no presets worked... can't
recall what other buttons were inop, but in the end I had to unplug the
power cord, and plug it back in to get the radio working again.

Bug or feature?

Bug, clearly. KidsPlay would only ever change the preset behavior, and
then only if you had previously installed it and configured it. You
didn't have Radio in a Pandora menu, or with Pandora in the playlist
when you did this, did you? It's hard to imagine why this would put the
Radio in such a state. :-(

[slim] Proper scoring for troll postings, per seanadams

2010-03-17 Thread pfarrell

We seem to be attracting a lot of, er, unfounded and uninformed postings
about the audio quality of various SD/Logitech devices, the brains or
lack thereof of Logitech management, etc.

The Touch seems to bring out nearly as many as the Audiophile forum
does.

I'm a fan of reputation based systems, where the community provides
information on the value one should place on a posting's author.

A while back, a well regarded forum member wrote into one of the
Audiophile threads:

2/10
I think we should start scoring the trolls. This post lacks originality
- you were doing better earlier with the bath tub business.

The author seemed to know a lot about the legacy Slim Devices products,
he uses a handle of seanadams.

What's not clear to me is how the SeanTrollScore system works. is it
like a signal to noise ration, where smaller numbers means worse (more
noise, less signal) or does it mean this posting is only a 2 out of a 1
(no troll) to (10 100% troll food) so that a highly troll score is 10
and a good posting is 1 or 2.

Seems to me that lower is more trollish, like a bad signal to noise
ratio. But I'm not sure, and need input from the user community.

Thanks
Pat

Do you know of other companies of similar size (to Logitech) where

I can see how company-hosted product forums could be a real mixed bag.

I think the problem is really that we historically have been spoiled
with very good communication, both with marketing, support and
developers.

The problem is that Logitech and the Squeezebox development is now
switching to the same level of communication with users as other large
companies.

There are a few developers that have been here during the old days and
still wants to keep the old communication level but their management
probably want them to focus on finishing up the next product instead of
spending time in the forum.

The result of all this is that we keep complaining because sometimes
there seems to be someone listening (the developers) and all we do is
making both them and ourselves more frustrated.

As already said, there are basically no large companies that have a
connection with the end users on the same level as old Slim Devices had.
This kind of connection just isn't possible when the organization grows.
If you like an extreme example, look at companies like Apple which is
extremely closed.

We all really want the best of the two worlds:
- The communication level we had with Slim Devices
- The economical backbone/stability and distribution channel we have
with Logitech

However, I'm starting to realize that this will probably never happen
because those things is VERY hard to combine. It's easy to think these
things can be combined, but remember that's a lot different to answer
questions from 500 users compared to answer questions from 5 users.
It just takes too much time in a large company so you can't prioritize
it in front of other things that produces economical result.

I'm not sure about the economy on old Slim Devices but I suspect they
wouldn't survive a product delay similar to what we have seen with the
Radio, battery and Touch. Of course, they would probably not have put
themselves in this situation, releasing several new products in this
short time frame. Still, even thought it might not feel so, I really
think the Squeezebox product still lives because someone inside Logitech
believes in it and even is prepared to loose some money temporary to
make it a success in the long run.

It's easy to say that Logitech can just announce a release date in the
forum, but remember that posting a date that later has to be delays is
often a bad idea. The developers still do it sometimes, probably just to
temporary stop to complains to get rid of some frustration so they can
focus on the development, but this still doesn't mean it's a good idea
to announce a date you aren't 110% sure you are going to reach.

It's also easy to say that Logitech could release a half finished
products to early adopters, but remember that this product is also going
to get in the hands of reviewers which will give it bad critique and
make that available to mass market users and decrease their interest.

Fortunately, the good news is that the Radio and Touch really is the
most exciting products in the streaming music player business I've ever
seen, both in reality and on paper. IMHO, they are definitely worth some
initial frustration and waiting time before the launch.

I'm personally hoping that Logitech will at least try to pick and keep
the good parts from Slim Devices, like:
- The connection with the beta testers, at least the hardware beta
testers
- The connection with the third party developers
- Try to keep the community alive so it can help them with the support
issues

I still have some fear they might fail with all this but there have
been some good indications during the last months, well hidden behind
all the complains also seen in this forum.

Trying to keep the connection between the management and end users is a
dead end in a big company as Logitech, it just won't work.

Anyone wondering about the release date, before you complain in the
forum at least contact your nearest Logitech sales contact and ask them.
The only answer you are going to get in the forum is from the Logitech
developers and community members that guesses or seen some rumor.

To everyone complaining:
- What would you think of the Squeezebox products if this forum didn't
exist ?
- Logitech management can easily shut down this forum if all they see
is a lot of complaints and angry users that gives their products bad
reputation. I'm not saying that we should be silent, but sometimes

Someone at some point said logitech wanted to absorb this board into
their usual support forums but got scared off. Not by negativity, but
sheer volume. This is a chatty crowd.

That said, if they did absorb this into their usual (icky) forums, it
would kill the forums off. I don't think they actually want that: at
least here they can babysit us and smack us when we get unruly. If
people left to some 3rd party forum they would lose that amount of

So, in general I think it's a mixed bag of blessings and curses, but
overall I think the forum does them well, even if the higher ups don't
