Mike, you should give us a few more clues - what version of Squeeze
Server are you running ? Are you also using Music IP ?
Has this started happening after updating Squeeze Server ? Has Squeeze
Server worked fine for a while and just suddenly decided to start
running scans?

You can recover data from external USB HDD (corrupted, damaged,

Wirrunna,
Thanks for your interest and help. I am currently running 7.5.0, but
this has been going on for at least a year. It wasn't until last week I
took the time to find out what was hammering my hard drive. On both PCs,
it's scanner.exe. I am not running Music IP or any plugins. (I've been
using Squeeze for about 6 years.)

I haven't noticed any particular pattern; the thing just takes off and
runs. I notice it running maybe once a week, but it may run more often.
I don't think it's a scanner virus because I just rebuilt my laptop
from scratch (format c:) about a month ago.

I'm surprised I'm the only one seeing this, since both of my PCs are
affected.

Cheers - Mike

We are pleased to announce the release of VortexBox 1.3. Continuing with
our goal to make VortexBox the universal server for any media player we
have added full DLNA support to VortexBox. DLNA is the future of media
sharing and many players such as PS3, Windows 7 Media Player, and
Samsung televisions support DLNA. Now all you players SqueezeBox,
Sonos, and DLNA can all use the same media.

We have also added Bliss to the VortexBox web GUI. Bliss can find cover
art for even the most obscure albums.

As usual there are also may other fixes and updates requested by the

erm... right - if I was using his name - but I'm using his username. I'd
-guess- that the person with the username -lief- is actually named
-Lief- - but I wasn't making that supposition. Some of the folks who
use a recognizable name as a username don't actually use that name in
personal life. Names from history (I'd be pretty sure of it if someone
used gaiusjulius but it's loads harder to spot if it's a character
from fiction. Aramis? real name? 3 musketeers fan? On the other side,
I have a friend named Galen, which I would have assumed was a
historical name (author of one of the first anatomical treatises). I'm
pretty sure he uses it online - and most folks probably guess that it
isn't his actual name.
So, I'm lazy and use the username, however I find it.

Thanks for the bit on pronunciation. We learn in school about the son
of Eric the red, but everyone pronounces it leef. Surprising that
Lief isn't a common English name, given the extent of the danelaw in
the 11th and 12th century. Well, we kept the th words - which
continue to bedevil English learners (my wife teaches English as a

You can splice it together by putting plugs on the ends to be joined and
plug them into a coupler.

However, I would try to avoid that. Any repairs to the cable
introduces another potential failure point and potential for impacting
the signal negatively, especially at the run lengths you are talking
about.

Is that cable 600, 500, 400, or now 300 feet long? Has the cabin been
moving while you're doing all this?

If you're working at lengths that are borderline, then I hope it's
obvious that this could only make things worse. If I had to make a
repair like that I'd punch one end down into and IDC jack and the other
into a plug. If you're burying the cable naked under a couple inches of
dirt, or stringing it through the trees, then you'll want to protect the
connection from moisture by shrink tubing and/or duct taping the hell
out of it.

Re: [slim] Help me get 500 ft away from router

2010-06-04 Thread leif

Does it matter what color order I use inside of ehternet jacket as long
as they match up on either end? The reason I ask if cable can be
spliced first of all if my cable get's cut accidentally I don't want to
have to replace my 400 foot cable if it can be repaired. Placing a
coupler between my router and my $35 dollar Bestbuy switch should be ok
since it's under 100 feet on that side right? This will allow me to try
one more time to span the entire length without a switch since I found
a new route that's at least 30 foot shorter than the 400 foot one that
failed. I'll cut the extra slack off, measure it and let you guys know
by how much shorter my new cable is and if it works. If it fails I'll
be able to cut off a length from the cable just long enough to span
distance from switch and shack and I'll place a coupler on the shorter
side of the cable of the ethernet cable that goes into my router since
it will then need about an extra 20 foot of ethernet cable attached to
it to accomidate the extra length the switch needs. Or will adding a
coupler between my router and switch even though it's under 100 feet
weaken the signal the switch get's and lesson the signal strength the
switch will be able to shoot out to shack? If this is the case then
perhaps I shouldn't use a coupler between the 100 foot run between
router and switch and instead discard the shorter length of the two
cables from my cut I make of my 400 feet cable and instead install a
new cable to switch from router that is 20 feet longer to acomidate the
extra length needed for the switch.

Yes, it matters. And for long lengths, it matters a lot.

You can decide whether to use 568B or the older 568A, but most folks
just use 568B, since that is what 99% of all commercial patch cables use.

Re: [slim] Help me get 500 ft away from router

2010-06-04 Thread leif

Yikes, I'm sure I paired my wires differently. I'll re-terminate my ends
properly at my shorter run length and report back. If fails and I decide
to attach a coupler to shorter run to switch from router, is a keystone
jack preferable to a coupler? Is there loss introduced in either of
these connections? In other words if putting a coupler in between
router-switch and signal is making it to switch but still isn't being
relayed to the longer distance from switch to shack, might it be
relayed sufficiently if switch was instead fed a single uncoupled 100
foot cable from router?

Re: [slim] how to replace transporter screen

2010-06-04 Thread amcluesent

I'd like to know how I can replace it myself

Sourcing the vacuum display is impossible as they went end-of-life a
while back.

You'd have to track down a broken SB3 and transfer the screen or hope
Squeezebox will repair it under warranty from their stash of displays.

Well, I took it out, put it back in...and still nothing. My stereo is
too far away to keep it wired, so I'm going to attempt to replace the

Did you try at least operating it with the card out? I would suggest
doing that before going thru the hassle of getting a replacement. I
understand your setup requires this to be wireless, but you should be
able to verify the SB3 starts up ok without the wifi card.

You can just have SlimServer put the display on the other screen.

Its the same screen in the SB2 and SB3/Classic. I assume that actually
doing the swap is mostly mechanical with a cable or two.

[slim] Receiver stuck in 'Red light flashing slowly' state

2010-06-04 Thread ms1974

Hi all,

I've run out of options... :(
For the past few days i've been successfully running a squeezebox setup
consisting of the Squeezeserver (Freenas), 2 x Receivers, 1 x Squeezebox
Boom and a Squeezebox Duet. **This has been working perfectly.**.

This morning I awake to find that one of my receivers is not working
and instead is just displaying a slow flashing red light.

I've tried to remedy this in various ways as follows:
1) Reset by holding down the button on the front (for up to a minute).
No change.
2) Disconnecting power for 1 minute then reconnet. - No change.
3) Try connecting to my laptop via ethernet cross over cable - no
network lights appear on port.
4) Restart Squeezeserver - no change
5) Restart Wireless router - no change
6) Move my receiver to another room in case it was getting interference
from another device. (Even plugging it in right next to the working
receiver hasn't helped).

I noted the router does not give out an IP Address to this device.

Does anyone have any ideas what else I could try? Has it died? (Hope
not... just spent 4 months waiting for a replacement remote).

Cheers all,
Mark

[slim] Best iPad browser setup

2010-06-04 Thread havoc1

I love ipeng but that tiny interface on the ipad is annoying. Have been
messing around with the regular web interface. I have found that Atomic
Web Browser from the app store works much better than safari and if you
use the light skin on the web interface it all seems to work quite
nicely.

Anyone else got tips for using web interface on iPad?

[slim] I wonder why...DNLA

I wonder why, Squeezebox are not DNLA compliant as other wifi radios
(and cheaper one...).
It would be so simple not to have to switch between mysB.com and server

Nowdays, even TV set are DNLA compliant...

Does anyone know why ?

Re: [slim] I wonder why...DNLA

2010-06-04 Thread andyg

DLNA is pretty limited, we can do a lot more things with our own server.
That said, it is something I'd like to see us do someday, but it's not
been a priority.

DLNA support could be added through a plugin, I even started working on
one myself, but it's a large job and I don't have the tuits to work on
it right now.

What does this do for you? If you really need it, install a Vortexbox
instance since I see the new release (today 1.4) supports it.

I don't have to switch modes at all: If I want pandora or rhapsody
(etc.,) I just select it..

Re: [slim] Receiver stuck in 'Red light flashing slowly' state

Have you tried re-running the setup procedure with the Controller
(remote)? The flashing red light indicates it is in a setup mode, so
it may be waiting for the controller to help configure it. Do you still
have the setup procedure?

Re: [slim] I wonder why...DNLA

2010-06-04 Thread pippin

DLNA is much inferior and currently doesn't support most of the features
that make the Squeezebox an interesting device:

- (usable) remote control
- synchronization
- gapless playback
- extensibility

It's no surprise that cheap radios support it, that's what it is: an
interface for cheap radios.

Re: [slim] How do I stop scanner.exe from running?

2010-06-04 Thread Wirrunna

Mike, the only thing I would point the bone at is the Rescan Timer that
you have already checked is off. I am not aware of anything else that
would kick off a scan.
You don't have some sort of garbage collect program that would clear SB
cache that runs auto magically? If the SB server loses it's data base it
will rebuild (kickoff a scan).
What type of scan is kicked off? The web control Server
Settings/Information tab should indicate whether it is a full scan or
just a look for new and changed music, but if it is just a look for new
and changed music it shouldn't take long.
All I can suggest is to email support or try 7.5.1 (or even 7.6.0) and
see if it goes away. Pretty lame advice, but I can't think of anything
else.
