Re: [slim] Using ipod touch as remote control ........

2010-06-24 Thread cliveb

I'm a long-time Squeezebox Controller user, but since my daughter has an
iPod Touch, I asked her to install iPeng out of curiosity. She did the
download/install, so I can't comment on how easy it was, but suffice to
say that within about 5 mins of me asking her to get it, iPeng was ready
to use.

The first thing to say about iPeng is that it pops up numerous
tutorials when you first start using it. This is a good sign - clearly
there is a lot of assistance available right inside the app. But being
male, of course I simply dismissed these tutorials after a very cursory
scan and started playing. Reading instructions is the last resort for us
blokes.

Within a few minutes I was controlling the three Squeezeboxes around
the house, grouping/ungrouping them, synchronising, etc. The interface
on iPeng really is very good. On the basis of playing with iPeng for a
few minutes, I'd say that it's a much better interface than the
Controller.

There are two downsides to iPeng...

Firstly, I found the location accuracy of touches on icons to be a bit
hit-and-miss. My overall feeling was that there are too many small
icons close together, and it's easy to get the wrong one. Temper that
observation with the fact that I'm a novice iTouch user - perhaps with
more experience using the device my touches would be better controlled.
(And in any case, a similar criticism can be made of the Controller with
regard to wheel overshoot).

Secondly (and this is a predicted downside rather than an observed
one), keeping the Controller battery charged is convenient. When not in
use, you just drop it in the cradle and it's always charged and ready
for use. With an iTouch you'd need to remember to hook it up to a
charger at appropriate times. I get the feeling that it would be easy
to forget and find that when you come to use iPeng the iTouch is out of
juice.

 Hey, this is Apple!

You'd eventually need a broadband internet connection because software
updates for the iPod touch are quite large when they come but besides
 that:

 1. Connect iPod to your Mac, a few clicks and it's set up.
 2. Select your WiFi network on the iTouch (you'll get prompted when you
try some online stuff) and enter the WiFi password.
 3. Go to App Store (on the iTouch), search for iPeng and buy it
 (another three or four clicks).
 4. Start iPeng.

In 90% of the cases you should be done now.

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2010-06-24 Thread russelc

The problem appears to be related to the latest version of Adobe Flash
Player as noted in this link
https://forum.reciva.com/read.php?3,63319,63319

I can confirm that by removing the latest Flash version my install of
DSBridge works again. This appears to only be an issue for XP users.

However, I cannot figure out from the above link what I need to do to
re-install a previous version of Flash and I don't have any more time
now to spend on it. If someone can figure this out I would appreciate
an idiots guide to reinstalling the suggested previous Flash version
10,0,45,2.

Anyway I hope this helps anyone struggling with this issue.

Re: [slim] Mini Stick-On IR Emmiter

2010-06-24 Thread aubuti

Does it have a small (3.5mm?) mini plug on the other end from the
emitter? If so, and if your SB supports the IR Blaster plugin then you
can use the cable and plugins to send infrared remote commands to
another device. You would stick the mini-plug in the SB's headphone
jack, and position the IR emitter over the IR window on the other
device. A typical application is to control the on/off and volume on
your amplifier, using only the SB's infrared remote.

As far as I know, only the older SBs (SB, SB2, SB3/Classic, Boom,
Transporter) support the IR Blaster plugin. The Duet Receiver
definitely doesn't because it doesn't have an IR receiver or a
headphone jack. The Touch has some IR capabilities, but they are more
limited than the SB3/Classic, so they would require a different plugin.
I'm not sure about the Radio's IR capabilities, but they are probably
equal to or less than the Touch's.

Re: [slim] Issue with new router and SB3

2010-06-24 Thread russelc

In my OP i stated;

'However, I have since noticed one annoying feature of my new
environment. In the past the SB3 would only show the message Can't
connect to server: ONCE ONLY when the server was shut down, went into
standbye or hibernation, or if wireless dropped. Now I have a situation
where when the server is off or in standbye or hibernation the message
is displayed every 5 minutes (I've timed it). It looks like something
is polling it at this interval.'

By the above I meant that 'in the past' when the player was connected
to the m/c running the SB server and BEFORE I changed my router I only
got the message as the m/c changed state. After changing the router I
get it every 5 mins.

Your solution stops this happening (for which I am very grateful) BUT
not by fixing the issue I related in the OP. I would like to understand
this just because it annoys me that something is happening for which I
do not have an explanation.

They make a wireless charging case for the iphones and ipod touches.
Basically it's a case that goes over the phone and allows you to set
the phone / ipod on a charging mat which come in a few different
shapes and sizes.

I picture using one of these on a end table, and just always returning
the ipod touch to that mat when not in use. Another option is to buy a
docking station, very similar to how the controller docs. This is how
I'm currently charging mine, I just return it to the dock.

You can find some pretty good prices on docks at dealextreme

I'm currently using this one with an ipod touch 2g and a 1g (both can
be found used for under $100) I did have to use a dremmel tool to make
the ipods fit in this dock since it's designed for a iphone which is a
little different size, however that site offers docks that will work
without modifications, I just needed on that shape and size to mount on
the wall.

My opinion, iPeng on an iTouch/iPad/iPhone is better then the Controller
hands down.

There is just no way to go wrong. I have recommended that several
friends check Ebay and Craigslist for used iTouch to put iPeng on for

Its also a great reason to get the better half to let you buy an

Great tip ! Thanks so much. Your right that is a simple method

Not having had this type of device(ipod touch)before. My wireless
network is even new to me, but have a great friend to help with network
configurations. Never even thought I could purchase apps directly from
touch itself. Great benefit I suppose to wifi. Hell I'm even still
shocked I can print things out on my printer with Macbook pro
wirelessly.

Guess I'm a little behind times, but I've been catching up more, and
more recently.

Now I'm wanting to wait for Apple to update ipod touch. Which as I
hear should be soon, but not sure how long I want to wait. May look
for something used if can find a good deal to get me by for a while.

Now I have a few functional reasons to get one of these devices. I
also have a Roku HD player. Which is streaming video from the internet
without a computer. It's for netflix, and other things like that. I
feel like I have read their is a remote app for the Roku as well. I
need to do some digging to find out if that is the case, or not.

You all seem to have lots of positive things to say. Now I want one of
these suckers !

[slim] No audio or playback after power down

2010-06-24 Thread Navne

Dear Forum

At my club we have a squeezebox network running music at a number of
bars. There is a slimserver running the music - upgraded to the latest
available version, plus a number of the original slimdevices, one in
each bar. All slimdevices are upgraded to firmware version 130.
We maintain seperate playlists for each unit, so there is no sync going
on between any of the devices.

We need to power of the bars at night, and as such we turn off the
power for the slimdevices - while the server will remain on as it is
located in the always on server room.

All of this is working very well, except for one problem..
When connecting a slimdevice, while there is no playlist running, will
easily connect to the server, and when a playlist is selected the music
will start to play, just as one would expect. Problem however is, that
while the slimdevice is turned off this playlist keeps playing, and
when we turn back on the slimdevice the next day upon opening the bar,
the slimdevice will find the server, and display the song currently
playing in the playlist, but playback never starts.. The slimdevice
will display the song in the playlist, and appear to be at the very
start of the song, but not start to play it, while the son actually
plays on the server.. The remedy is to pause the playlist, select the
next song in the list and press play, then the audio will start again..
This is however not an ideal solution, as we would very much like to
have the slimdevices play music without user interaction. I've tried
changing the settings for how the slimdevice behaves when the power is
off, but this seems to only have effect if you from the slimserver
select to turn off the slimdevice, and not when the device is turned
off by manually switching the power..

I've been trying to find a thread about this in this forum without much
success and now hope for some wise person to come to my rescue..

I thank you in advance

Re: [slim] No audio or playback after power down

2010-06-24 Thread iPhone

Why turn the Squeezebox off, why not just pause it? The amount of power
it uses is nothing compared to what a business uses. And when you say
Off, do you mean Standby or are you pulling the plug? Because if you
are not pulling the plug, its not really off anyway.

If you are pulling the plug or turning a powerstrip off, the Squeezebox
lost connection but the Server is waiting for it to come back, so I
believe it keeps playing the Playlist. If you need to keep doing this,
can all the players be stopped then turned off from a WebUI before the
power is pulled?

press the preset and it powers up and plays the radio station.

Easy to set up. navigate to any station using the menu's and then hold
the preset button down for a few seconds.

On my old SB2, this of course has no buttons on the device. I usually
control this from my Boom anyway as they are usually synchronized.

[slim] Transporter will not connect to wireless network

2010-06-24 Thread norderney

My Transporter will not connect to my wireless network.

When set to Obtain IP Address automatically, it comes back with the
message Couldn't Find DHCP Server.

My PC is set up to Obtain An IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS
Server Address Automatically.

When doing IPCONFIG on my PC it returns:
IP - 192.168.1.80
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.255.0
Gateway - 192.168.1.254

I have tried setting up a static IP on my Transporter using these
values, but I have no values for DNS.

My wireless network is working ok, because my wireless laptop is
working ok.

The transporter worked ok last night and I have not installed any new
software since then.

I am running on windows Vista with Norton 360, BUT I have been running
with this config for more than 12 months wiyjout any problems. There
are no changes to Norton and/or my Norton Firewall.

Any ideas? I'm getting music withdrawl symptoms.

[slim] Streams fail when Radio synched with SqueezeSlave?

2010-06-24 Thread meep

I have a Squeezebox Radio and a couple of instances of SqueezeSlave
outputting to t-amps.

When I use the Radio in standalone mode, it has no problem playing from
my library of any internet radio station.

If I sync the radio with one or more of the squeezeslave players,
library music plays fine but internet radio streams wont;s play (radio
interface seems to hang at 'connecting' or similar)

Where should I be looking to solve this?

Thanks

Peter

[slim] Transferring itunes library to USB storage?

2010-06-24 Thread Ikabob

This is a basic question that I should know (aka: stupid question) but
how do you transfer all the music from my itunes library to the USB
storage that I am using with SBTouch? I tried exporting library but
just a small file was transferred...called library.xml safari
document 956KB which could not be all my tunes. What am I not doing
right? Thank you.

[slim] Broken Remote for SB classic.

2010-06-24 Thread DeeJayRy

i've broken the remote for my SB classic and have been told by logitech
support that a replacement remote is not available so i'd like some
help evaluating the options i have for controlling my SB.

I have SlimControl on my windows mobile device but its a bit limited
for things like last.FM and shoutcast are there any other Windows
mobile clients available?

The SB Controller looks like a great device but i'm not sure i've got
£200 to blow on what is essentially a remote control, does the
controller really live up to its price tag?

what about the remote for the SB Boom? its cheap but lacks a lot of the
functionality of the original remote, i guess you can still navigate all
features using the D-pad, instead of using the shortcut buttons.

Or the harmony controlers, how do they perform? i guess £60-80 is a
reasonable price.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [slim] Broken Remote for SB classic.

2010-06-24 Thread aubuti

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch you can install the iPeng app for
$10 and it makes a great remote/controller for any Squeezebox.

Alternatively, consider getting the infrared remote for the SB Touch.
It's smaller than the original SB3/Classic remote and doesn't have all
the same buttons (no Brightness button or 1-2 others), but the big
advantage over the Boom remote is that has alphanumeric keys just like
your old SB3/Classic remote. Those keys are great for jumping to
specific artists, albums, tracks, etc. And the Touch remote is only a
little more expensive than the Boom remote.

Finally, your old remote may be fixable -- it depends how you broke it.
Often the connection for the emitter gets broken, but it can be fixed
with a soldering gun and a steady hand.

Re: [slim] Broken Remote for SB classic.

2010-06-24 Thread tcutting

One option would be the remote for the Touch. It's more similar in
size/functionality to the SB3 remote. The Touch remote, I believe does
NOT have the brightness button, which I think is used to re-initialize
the SB3 if required (don't remember the process).
How broken is your SB3 remote? There is a known issue with the
connection between the IR transmiter and the circuit board which can
usually be repaired by re-flowing the solder connection at those
locations.

Re: [slim] Transferring itunes library to USB storage?

2010-06-24 Thread aubuti

It should be as easy as finding the directory/folder that iTunes uses
and copying it over to the USB drive. If you look in the iTunes
settings it will tell you which directory it's using for music. Then
connect the external drive to your computer and use your standard
operating system tools (eg, Windows Explorer on Windows) to copy the
folder from one drive to the other.

Re: [slim] Broken Remote for SB classic.

2010-06-24 Thread aubuti

The Brightness button is used for firmware updates on the
SB2/SB3/Classic. If you don't manage to repair your SB3/Classic remote,
then you should set the SB to update firmware automatically. You can do
this (after you get a functioning remote) by holding down the left
arrow key for ~5 seconds until you get into the basic player firmware
menu. Somewhere in the setup options is an option for automatically
updating the firmware.

[slim] iPeng 'Your player was not found'

2010-06-24 Thread foosayer

I had a working iPeng 1.2.1 and SqueezeServer 7.5.1. Then I upgraded my
SqueezeServer computer, reinstalled 7.5.1. Now iPeng reports 'Player
not found', although it sees my server and loads correct playlists from
iTunes. My Receiver has the same IP as before. Any clues appreciated.

Re: [slim] Replaced mini WIFI card...and nothing

2010-06-24 Thread bobkoure

If you don't mind a second box in your hifi stack, you could just buy a
dd-wrt capable router (like 'this one'
for $30).
Install dd-wrt and just put it into repeater mode.
Plug a CAT5/6 cable between the two, and, as far as your SB is
concerned, it's wired.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize the Squeezebox server had a web

tracked down a configuration error in the player network setup. Now all
is back to normal. Much appreciated.

Only one caveat hopefully DeeJayRy's remote broke while he was on never
version of ss/sc/sbs the older firmware does not have the auto-upgrade
option.
And no possibility to upgrade to never versions as you must have
brightness button.

Is the transporter ir remote still avaliable ? it should have
brightness.

I can confirm that the Touch remote actually works fine on a SB3, it's
actually slightly better, fits nicely in your hand, just better
ergonomics imo.
