As it happens I can help here, being married to a Japanese translator.
The comment you got the App Store said:

I guess there aren't many people who are using SqueezeBox in Japan, but
this is something I recommend to those few. If you are a SqueezeBox user
and are complaining that there is no iPad version of iPeng, here is the
one for you. I've been using this since the previous version. It wasn't
bad in terms of ease of use, although the appearance wasn't very nice at
all. This new version is a success because they added a more detailed
appearance whilst keeping the basic layout as before. An image of your
SqueezeBox is shown on the selector of the player. This was also a
function iPeng of 2 generations before the current one, but probably
because of a problem with the patent or something it's now more of a
stylised image. This has led to a better review for SqueezePad, but
it's a worry for the future. Even allowing for such an unknown for
the future, I believe this one is worth the high price. Only if you are
a SqueezeBox user, that is.

Hope that helps. So, how about those player images - are they going to
stay?

Re: [slim] IPAD users - 2nd app appears in store

2010-09-19 Thread tonysawford

Could you possibly implement a cancel function for the cache refresh? I
rebuilt my library (just under 2 albums) a few days ago, which
meant that when I next fired up Squeezey it tried to re-add everything
to its cache (and yes, I have seen the entry about this in the FAQ :-))
The problem I encountered was that the program crashed part-way through
the refresh. I re-booted the iPad, just to make sure that memory was
freed up, and restarted Squeezey, which started refreshing its cache,
but it just hung, displaying 32333/19853. I left it for a long
time, but it didn't change. I tried quitting restarting, but to no
avail. And, of course, while the cache is being refreshed you can't do
anything else. In the end, the only thing that I could do was uninstall
the program re-download it from the app store, which seems a bit of a
drastic solution. What I would have liked to have done is cancel the
refresh, then go into the settings dialog empty it. So is there any
chance that you can implement a cancel function for the refresh?
Alternatively, how about not starting the refresh immediately, but
having a dialog pop up with two options, allowing you to choose whether
to add new items to the cache or rebuild it from scratch? If the user
didn't select an option within a short time (3 - 4s, maybe) it would
default to adding new items (i.e., the current behaviour).

Cheers,
Tony

I'm aware of the limitation with respect to controlling the newer

good set of codes, but not all satisfied yet. I've used codes from
various JVC equipment and used two Harmony remotes to learn a common
set from other devices. I would wish there was an easier way, but I
seem to be getting closer to a workable solution.

As for the .ir files, I'm aware of those, but I have no idea how I

The images are going to stay. They were drawn from scratch. No
copyright or trademark problems to be expected, just because there is a

I finally worked out the difference, and why this happens. When my 7.5
server retrieves the apps, I can see it is connecting to
test.mysqueezebox.com (from the apps it shows).

When I tell my squeezeboxes to connected to mysb then they actually
connect to the main mysqueezebox.com.

Is there anyway to force the 7.5 server to connect mysqueezebox.com
instead of test.mysqueezebox? The latter does not seem to correctly
recognise I'm in the UK for some reason, and gives the last.fm

I am unable to upgrade my QNAP to 7.6.

mentioned. This CD is stored with Tracks 1-9 in one folder, Tracks 10
and 12 in a second folder, Track 11 in a third folder all by itself,
and Tracks 13,14,15 in a fourth fodler. ACC incorrectly displays Tracks
10 and 12 here as two albums, even though they are stored in the same
folder. The other folders are shown correctly.

The second (exampl1: Robert Levin plays Mozart) shows the second
situation I mentioned. On the CD, Tracks 1-3 are one piece, Tracks 4-6
are a second piece, and Track 7 is an alternate version of the movement
in Track 2. I have stored this CD as two folders, with Tracks 1,2,3,7
in one folder and Tracks 4,5,6 in the other. Yet ACC breaks out Track
7 as a separate album, even though it is stored in the same folder with
 1,2,3.

The third (exampl4: disc 2 of a collection by Richter) shows a final
situation. The CD contains pieces by various composers, and I have
created a separate folder for each composer's tracks. I've grouped the
three Chopin tracks 10, 15, 16 in one folder, but ACC shows them as two
 albums.

 Does this help?

 Swimmer

ACC determines when to start a new album based on:
1. If the track resides in a different folder (this requires you to
select the 'Use folder structure...' option in ACC)
2. If the album ID is different.

I haven't tested it myself as it is not a common practice to split up
an album over different folders but it appears that SBS assigns a
different album ID for tracks in a different folder or the problem is
tagging related.

Can you post a screenshot of the tagging of one album? Is there a
difference in a particular tagging field that can be related to this
problem?

Re: [slim] Now Playing screen for classical music

2010-09-19 Thread JerryS

I like the idea and congratulate you on it. Only problem is, I don't
think I can stand the idea of re-tagging all my music for the third
time! I currently use the composer tag, artist tag, in which I put
everything (orchestra, conductor, individual artists, choir), album
(which I preface with composers name) and title (usually movement). It
is not such an elegant solution as yours but thanks to scrolling, all
the information gets displayed on the now playing screen. I also find
it useful to have orchestra, conductor etc in the artist tag when
searching. It's all very much a case of using 'what works for you'.
If I was starting from the beginning I would certainly consider your
solution.

Yes, in your case it would only show the composer separately, whom you
already have in the album title. Unless you have followed the composer
name by a unique separator character, it will be a lot of work to
re-tag everything.

I was not that happy with the three lines of information from the
beginning, so I used tags as atomic as possible; I have COMPOSER, WORK,
MOVEMENT, OPUS, COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR, BAND, and ARTIST. I could have
split up the artists further, e.g. giving each a solo instrument, etc.,
but I am too lazy for that.
Until I made the new screen, I composed the TITLE and ALBUM from those
ingredients, using MP3tag.

PERFORMER and OPUS isn't supported by standard SBS as far as I know, I
think you need the Custom Scan plugin to scan those.

With Custom Scan you can configure these to be available as a title
format.
If you also install the Custom Clock Helper plugin you can configure
it to forward customclock/titleformatsupdated events to the
Controller.

To use these events you will need to subscribe on them, I'm not sure if
that's possible in the Now Playing screen but if you like to give it a
try you can take a look at the Custom Clock applet code, you will
find a section that looks like this that sets up the subscription:

Code:

  player:subscribe(
  '/slim/customclock/titleformatsupdated',
  function(chunk)
if not chunk.data[1] or chunk.data[1] ~= customclock or not chunk.data[2]
or chunk.data[2] ~= titleformatsupdated then
  return
  end
  local player = appletManager:callService(getCurrentPlayer)
  if player then
  self:_updateCustomTitleFormatInfo(player)
  end
  end,
  player:getId(),
  {'customclock','titleformatsupdated'}
  )

In the same way, you can look in the _updateCustomTitleFormatInfo
function of the Custom Clock applet code if you like to see how to use
the 'customclock titleformats' command to get the values of the
configured title formats, for example those provided by Custom Scan
plugin.

The Custom Clock applet code can be found here:
http://erlandplugins.googlecode.com/svn/CustomClock/trunk/src/

Of course, if you just want a user defined Now Playing screen, you can
also design own without any programming at all using Custom Clock and
Custom Clock Helper. See the wiki for more information:

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v3

2010-09-19 Thread Swimmerbird123

I've appended a screen shot of the tagging for the Robert Levin CD that
I showed earlier. It looks correct to me. So I still suspect it is
something in ACC.

When I do a fresh SBS scan of my library, I get an album count of 2553.
When I then run ACC, I get an album count of 2566, with a track count
that matches SBS. So ACC sees 13 more albums than SBS does. By
comparing the ACC Quick Reference with the SBS Music Folder display, I
have identified exactly 13 situations where I have non-consecutive
tracks from the same CD in the same folder, and ACC displays the
non-consecutive tracks as separate albums. So this would account for
the discrepancy in statistics.

Using the Use folder structure to determine albums does not affect
this non-consecutive track issue, but it does correctly handle the
situation where a folder contains tracks from 2 CDs is displayed. (That
happens when a long piece is split over two CDs and I re-combine the two
parts as a single folder):

When I set the Use folder structure option in ACC and ran it again,
now I get an album count of 2550, so 16 less than without that option.
All 13 of the 'non-consecutive tracks' folders are still displayed
incorrectly as multiple albums, so the new lower album count is not due
to that being corrected. However, comparing the two Quick Reference
printouts, I can identify exactly 16 situations where I had tracks from
two separate CDs in the same folder. These 16 two-CD folders are
displayed as two albums in the 'regular' ACC (because the tracks are
tagged as coming from two CDs) but with the use folder structure
option, they are correctly shown as one album. So that option generally
works right but still has the non-consecutive track problem.

This is not a big problem for me, so don't waste a lot of time on it.
I'm sure you have more important tasks to tackle. I just thought that
it may be a simple coding thing where you break out a new album when
the track number sequence is interrupted. If you can fix it, great, and
if not, ACC is still a great program.

Thanks,
Swimmer

You must be using Custom Tags (like I do). I have not figured out a way
to get those data from the server to the Now Playing applet on the
 controller.
So I worked with what data fields are available in Squeezeboxserver
 without 3rd party plugins.

Do you see Performers in the current Now Playing screen?
I know they can be shown in the browse menus. But those would look the
same if you would copy all Artist tags to Composer, Performer tags to
Artist, and change the mapping of tag names to names shown to the user
in the Mixed Tags settings. Another way to look at this is to merely
consider the Squeezeboxserver Artist and Composer fields as internal
(and confusing) representations of the Performer and Artist FLAC tags.

But anyway, I'd love to find a way to show Custom tags in the Now
 Playing screen of the Controller.

It started as a customized clock, thus the name. After some more work
it got enhanced to be a generic configurable screen on
Controller/Touch/Radio. The current version can even be configured to
replace the standard Now Playing screen. I would like a different name
on it today but it feels a bit late for that.

Re: [slim] Squeezeplay is

2010-09-19 Thread ja2038

Squeezebox radios are pretty darn expensive, and I can imagine how nice
they are, but at the expense the burden is on the seller to move them.

With player, I can try it out and imagine how nice it would be to have
the whole thing in a nice encapsulated consumer experience.

Free player doesn't cannibalize a $150 radio or $200 or $250 device, it
sells it like a free demo, or like your first joint free.

VMware *gives* away their VMware player and their VMware server and
they do that to get you to buy their more sophisticated products. Lots
of others have figured that out too.

[slim] What is the relation between squeezebox server and mysqueezebox.com?

2010-09-19 Thread ja2038

I spent the weekend playing with squeezebox server and player and trying
to figure out which of the squeezebox devices I might want to buy.

And I guess I understand that at some level there is no real
difference, or not intended to be, between squeezebox server and
mysqueezebox.com. But there clearly are differences if only in the UI
and general level of ease. For instance, at mysqueezebox, it seems
very easy to configure or change the logins of the various plugins. At
the home server, it's very difficult.

So...

1. Which devices need a home server, and which can use mysqueezebox?
2. If I run a home server, how do I configure the plugins?
Specifically, how do I configure Pandora on a home server?
3. What is synchronized between home server and my squeezebox?

and

4. How do I tell Squeezebox player to CONNECT to mysqueezebox to get
various sync updates?

[slim] OT: extending wifi via WDS vs. simple access point

2010-09-19 Thread aubuti

I'm invoking the kitchen sink subtitle of this forum to ask a question
about networking that is only tangentially about SBs, because I know a
lot of the folks here will know the answers.

I have a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato firmware as my router. I also
have a Netgear WGR614v3 router that has been repurposed as an access
point. For this I've connected the Linksys to the Netgear via ethernet
using one of the Netgear's LAN ports, turning off DHCP on the Netgear,
etc. etc. This setup connects a mixture of computers, SBs, internet
tablets, etc. Most of the devices are G devices, but we do have a
couple N-capable laptops, which are currently connecting via G.

The Netgear is starting to flake out, so I'm going to replace it. I see
two options. Option 1 is to replace it with another router that can run
Tomato or DD-WRT, and use Wireless Distribution System to use the
second router as an AP, though I'm not clear yet whether it would be
bridging or repeating. Given that I have the ethernet in place to wire
the two together, I'm not sure of the advantages of WDS to me in this
setting, since I understand that for wifi devices WDS effectively
halves the bandwidth.

Option 2 is basically to replicate the setup I have now, using the
second router as a simple access point. In fact, for this option I
could buy an AP, except they usually cost more and are useless as
backup routers in case my router suddenly dies.

For either option, I would seriously look at getting an N-capable
router so that the current -- and now doubt future -- N devices can
take advantage of it. It appears that there is at least one N-capable
router out there (WRT160NL) that supports DD-WRT, so Option 1 would
still be a possibility.

Any advice? Thanks.

Re: [slim] What is the relation between squeezebox server and mysqueezebox.com?

2010-09-19 Thread toby10

1. All SB players can use both SBS and MySB.com (except the long
discontinued SB1)
2. Pandora is an App not a Plugin and is configured on MySB.com,
Plugins are only on SBS
3. Very little is synced between SBS and MySB and is limited to
basic player settings, mostly related to SB3 and Boom
4. Switching to MySB varies by player, but it is very easy to do.
Getting back to SBS is as simple as navigating the player to My Music
in the main menu.
Updates can be obtained through both SBS and MySB, not required to
switch to MySB for updates.

SBS requires a computer and uses MySB in the background and can do
everything that MySB can do, but SBS is much more customizable.
MySB needs no computer but has limitations, like no access to your
local music and cannot see AAC streams in the Internet Radio menu
section and cannot Sync Last.fm to players.

[slim] Control Squeezebox Server from other computer

2010-09-19 Thread gjb

Just picked up a SB Boom, and loving it so far.

When the Squeezebox is connected to mysqueezebox.com I like that I can
easily control it from any computer. But, I don't have access to my
MP3s this way. (correct me if I'm wrong)

When it's connected to Squeezebox Server can I easily control it from
another computer? The answer must be yes, since so many people run
dedicated media servers...but how?!

Thanks!

Open a web browser on the other computer, and point it to

There is no right answer, it's only about options ;-)

I don't see any point in using WDS if you already went through the
trouble of laying out an Ethernet cable. WDS is more complicated, more
brittle and lower performance, and you may potentially run into
compatibility issues.

aubuti;577716 Wrote:

If you find something compatible with OpenWRT/DD-WRT/Tomato, any router
can be configured as an Access Point trivially. The difference between
an router and an access point is only in the software running on top of
it.

I have not tried that, but if you configure your two router with the
same ESSID on different channel, your clients should be able to roam
between the two. It used to work with 802.11b and WEP, but WPA may get
in the way.

If I were to buy a device, I would pick one of the two options. I'm not
overall impressed by the quality of the hardware out there, no point in
paying 802.11n money to get 802.11g performance and range.

First option is another WRT54GL, because it's cheap and very well
supported by all the alternate firmware, and I could swap it trivially
with all my other WRT54GL.

Second option is a NETGEAR WNDR3700, because it's one of the few
802.11n routers to get very good review, because it support 5GHz, has
good range, and because it's supported by OpenWRT.

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/30925-start-your-buying-netgear-wndr3700-reviewed
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/netgear/wndr3700

At then end, it really depend on *your* usage patterns. If your usage
is mostly toward the Internet, your broadband provider (DSL, Cable...)
is likely the bottleneck so no point in getting beyond 802.11g. If you
have lot's or internal traffic (file sharing, backup...), then install
CAT6 Ethernet cable or get the best 802.11n router you can get.

Personally, I'm a cheap guy and I salvaged another WRT54GS in the
trash. But I promised myself to install CAT6 one day.

Have fun...

Re: [slim] Last.fm plugin started asking for a subscription

2010-09-19 Thread Michael Herger
I finally worked out the difference, and why this happens. When my 7.5
server retrieves the apps, I can see it is connecting to
test.mysqueezebox.com (from the apps it shows).

Last.fm will soon enforce new rules, which include playback for subscriptions
only, no playback outside the countries where you actaully can subscribe. Part
of these changes are alread implemented on test.mysb.com. You shouldn't be
using it.

Is there anyway to force the 7.5 server to connect mysqueezebox.com
 instead of test.mysqueezebox?

Lift the enforcement of connecting to test instead of production systems ;-).
Shut down SBS, remove the use_sn_test line from your server.prefs file and
restart.

+1 on the Netgear. The signal strength on my Duet went from 40-50% to
90-100% with the switch from my old D-Link (how I hated that thing!)
and I didn't change the location of anything by even a millimeter.
And, the router's downstairs and my SB stuff is upstairs. For $150 and
about 10 minutes to install it, days of Duet frustration evaporated.

The N-band works great with my new laptop while the SB stuff continues
to run flawlessly on G. I actually have the SB set up on the guest
network and our laptops run on the primary.

YMMV, I'm sure, but my experience was that the Netgear solved all my
vexing Duet connection/dropout, etc. issues that I had experienced (and
we read so much about in these forums). Even using MySB.com, I can
listen for hours and hours with not so much as a hiccup.
