Re: [slim] How to find these forums from Logitech these days?

2010-12-23 Thread Mnyb

That is clear they want complaints where the support staff are.

But what is not that clear to is why there is no links from this forum
to such interesting places like http://downloads.slimdevices.com/ and
others like
the firmware upgrade repository where can get new fw to your controller
etc .
change logs svn and so on

You have to know or ask on this forum all the time .

I think I have 5-10 different bookmarks to keep track of what's going
on in the SB world .

A sticky on the beta forum or dev forum would do fine how to get beta
versions

Ooh i think i'm getting somewhere now. I realised the network cable was

I've tested it on my local music library (.flac, .mp3, .m4a, .wma),

Unfortunately, Pandora requires a subscription to play to the iPad, and
Rhapsody doesn't allow playback at all: This player does not support

a Rhapsody limitation, and nothing can be done to change it.

Still, well worth the upgrade price. Thanks for all the hard work to

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback arrives on iPad: SqueezePad 1.7.0 released

2010-12-23 Thread bluegaspode

I wouldn't say that Squeezey and SqueezePad work the same.
Squeezey only supports mp3, so the LAME codec needs to be installed on
the server - and anything must go through the CPU intensive mp3
encoding.
SqueezePad support a lot more formats natively (and I'll implement
native FLAC in some later version anyway).

FLAC to PCM decoding (i.e. SqueezePad) is much more lightweight than
FLAC decoding and mp3 encoding (i.e. Squeezey). Also - as written -
Squeezey doesn't support internet-radio (which needs some special
treatment, as the iPad mp3 decoder alone cannot handle all streams).
And none of the other Apps can operate with MySqueezebox.com alone.

I'll look into Napster soon, don't have an account myself but that's
what the testing is for.
I already updated all descriptions this morning that Napster and
Rhapsody right now are not working. Sorry to anyone who wants to stream
these right now.

For Napster I still have hope - and for Rhapsody AndyG destroyed my
hope. But thanks a lot for the hint - I won't be as depressed as if I
had tried it myself.

Re: [slim] How to find these forums from Logitech these days?

2010-12-23 Thread FredFredrickson

Big companies that haven't quite embraced the web 2.0 scare me. I hate
it when I love a product that they kill off due to negligence.

The fact that the most vocal users in the squeezebox community are
debating when logitech will drop a product is bad news. Even if
logitech plans another release, it's pointless now, since they're not
nurturing the community they have. Apparently nobody upstairs learned
in school that a community with this much dedication is hard to
engender. Nurture it while you've got it!

I remember a similar issue going down years back with the Yahoo Music
community. Yahoo is by far one of the worst web companies. They don't
embrace openness, community, or any of the things that make web 2.0
companies popular. After complaining loudly that the community attitude
was getting lousy, I wanted real answers, I finally got patched through
on the phone with the head of Yahoo Music- which at the time was Ian
Rogers, where he fumbled with his words a bit, didn't give me any
indication that we should relax and that things were fine, and it
appeared to me that the yahoo music department were as much in the dark
as the community. They shortly after shut down their music service and
now use Rhapsody as their provider.

I used to frequent the yahoo music community aside from using their
music service, but their mishandling of the community was so business
based and ignored the true community leaders, that I was too insulted
to go back.

I vote we get every logitech exec to read at least one Seth Godin book.
I understand they might not care about the slim devices community
because it's a small market, but they're not doing themselves any
favors with a current asset they own. They'll make their own
self-fulfilling prophecy.

Hi jbuccino.
I think the authentication might (still) be the issue.
'No Audio data found' is the error message, when SqueezePad cannot
connect to the stream at all.
To be honest: neither me nor my beta testers tested with authentication
turned on - it's a very uncommon scenario.

Can you temporarily turn authentication off in your server and test
again?
You might also try an internet-radio station (if this one is not
proxied by your server, SqueezePad will directly connect to the remote
stream).
As my family is already around it's a bit difficult to do thorough
testing right now - I'll only be able to do it again later.
If it's really authentication then (as Apple does holidays right now) I
think the next bugfix release can be published in the very early January
weeks.

the wrong side of the line myself, but really, we don't do ourselves
any favor by turning every thread to a Squeezebox products/community

- The forum is here.
- People are still posting and reading very actively.
- There are a lot of community members with passion for the products
that want to spend their spare time making them better through beta
testing, suggesting improvements, developing applets/plugins/apps and
telling Logitech how to manage their business.
- The Logitech developers are still both reading and posting in the
forum.
- Multiple Squeezebox are still manufactured and available in the
stores.

So both the community and the products are very much alive and most of
us love them.

The Logitech people that reads this forum love and care for the

need to be convinced. The people that needs to be convinced aren't

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-12-23 Thread guidof

The recent update of squeezepad provides a most welcome change that
makes it much easier to tap the left hand side letters without
inadvertently launching a track.

BUT, embedded art is now privileged over cover.jpg files! This is not
an improvement for those who have painstakingly inserted high-quality
artwork and now have to de-embed all art manually if they want to see
the higher resolution (larger), higher quality art. Please at least
provide an option for defeating this most unwelcome feature which
actually works against the squeezepad's ability to show album art
almost at full scale.

Thanks.

Hi guidof,

oh dear - one of those things where people either like it the one or
the other way.
Actually this feature is needed for compilations, where each track
needs a different cover art.

Is there any need to keep the embedded art if it's of lower quality
than the folder.jpg ?
There are great tools that can remove all embedded art automatically at
once (Bliss being one of them - I wrote a blog about it some time ago:
http://www.squeezepad.com/2010/10/how-to-upgrade-coverart-to-a-higher-resolution/
).
I just found another thread which talks about different programs
(mp3tag and tagrename) to handle the embedded art:
http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/284477/batch-tagging-album-art-using-cover-jpg

As I want to keep SqueezePad as simple as possible I'm very reluctant
to adding new options, which only a very few users will need (but of
course I'm very open if other users chime in on this topic).

Don't you think that in the end you'll have less trouble with your
music library if you clean up your tags and embedded art.
For instance the WebUI of SB-Server also prefers embedded art already
and I'm pretty sure the Squeezeboxes that show coverart will follow
some day.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

This is good news.
A (windows) server indeed handles WMA transcoding for local files and
it's good to know that this also works automatically for Napster.
I did a quick search about WMA decoders, but didn't get any far. Also I
need to read into licensing issues, maybe as with mp3 there are still
licensing fees which might apply before I can support it natively.

I'll be listening to BBC iPlayer between christmas and new year - maybe
I'm able to reproduce your issue with start/stop!

produce unexpected effects. Dbpoweramp does remove all embedded artwork
automatically if and when I open up each folder to
check its art status.

I'm sure you are right that in the long run one is better off by
removing all embedded art (except for those folks with compilations
perhaps). But I still think your excellent app would be even more so if
it gave the user the option to choose which art is privileged. I hope
you will get input from others to that effect.

Here's my experience: I started out enabling everything - recommended
and otherwise and enabled plugin auto-update.

I hit some issues with auto-update of plugins where some plugin updates
were causing overall issues with SBS 7.5.1 -- presumably some
regressions between plugins developed for 7.6 and maybe tested against
nightly stable builds.

I had to reinstall tarball to get back to default plugin versions, and
then I started disabling plugins until I found the ONE that was causing
me a problem.

embedded art if that is present in an album.

Why not embed the larger art in the files ? too

This design make images consistent in SqueezePad vs squeexeboxserver
 and squeezeplay .

If SBServer privileges embedded artwork, then by all means Squeezepad
should do the same by default.

However, well-designed software should accommodate the user's
preferences, not the other way around. In this case, it should allow
the user the option of prioritizing cover.jpg files rather than
embedded art.

I hope the developer of this otherwise fine app will provide that
option in the near future.

Re: [slim] Mirrorfolder

2010-12-23 Thread bobkoure

Interesting.
I've just been using a script running robocopy that gets invoked when I
stick a drive in (I've got an adapter you can just stick a bare SATA
drive into, connects via e-SATA). First time ever autorun has come in
handy.
Moving disks manually means I'm often out of sync, but only by the few
albums I've added any particular week. The discs that live at my
brother's house are usually -way- out of sync, but I figure it's still
better than having nothing off-site.

I hear good things about synctoy, which I keep meaning to try.

Well done! I'm trying the test drive right now and it's working well.
Just a couple of hiccups when trying to switch tracks rapidly...what
you would expect given the transcoding that has to happen server-side.

So...how much more work to make the flac decoding happen client-side?
I'm not complaining, mind you. My $4.99 is on it's way to you (and to
Steve).

Re: [slim] Should I disable unused plugins?

2010-12-23 Thread JJZolx

I disable most of the ones I don't use and leave enabled only the ones
that I use regularly, or that I might sometimes use. If nothing else,
the server requires less memory with a minimal set of plugins loaded.

The only ones that are a must for me are:

Data and Time (screensaver)
Random Mix
Rescan Music Library

No music services, nothing for mysqueezebox.com, and no third party
plugins.

Re: [slim] ANNOUNCE: iPeng for iPad - Your Squeezebox Remote Gets Big

2010-12-23 Thread pippin

OK, so the problem is probably that iPeng synchronizes it's cache each
time you start it up due to overnight changes to the database. Can you
see whether the time the progress bar is shown under Albums coincides
with the delays?

As is true so often: upgrading to 7.6 beta would probably help, it has
an optimized albums query that is much, much faster. The problem with
the old one is that for some reason it was very inefficient in
retrieving artists together with albums which is what iPeng does.

10,000 albums is quite a number. I've seen a library with 40.000 albums
sync in around five minutes even on older server versions but that was
using a very fast server.

Which Squeezebox Server version ? I think the 7.6 beta performs
automatic rescans when a file in the music folder has been changed.

Re: [slim] HELP! Squeezebox sync mode, some players stop playing sound.

2010-12-23 Thread squeezeb

Came back for an update:
Wired everything up, and all the Squeezeboxes worked fine. Went back to
wireless, and things acted up again. Tried changing the router's channel
to one that wasn't used by any of the local wireless networks, and it
seemed to work, but alas: no go. Tried changing channels to random
channels: no good.

Tried updating to 7.5.2, no good. Went back to 7.5.0, and things have
been streaming for the past several days without a problem!

So something between 7.5.0 and 7.5.1 went wonky.

You have an iPad and you are a Squeezebox user? Or you do already use
iPeng and you feel you sometimes need a big screen to search for stuff.
The Squeezebox web interface is too slow for you? Then we’ve got

will give you all the functionality iPeng for iPhone provides to give
you full control over your Squeezebox.
