Well, the problem is that Android users don't really buy Apps.
If you look at the App market you will see that as of the NUMBER of
Apps, Android is at least at par with iOS right now, however if you
look at the App REVENUES, iOS Apps still hold like 90% of the market.

Now add to that that there are actually free options available on
Android, one of them from Logitech and you don't really get something
that churns out enough money to make it your first priority in life...

I disagree Pippin, this is a paid app, on Android marketplace it is
showing that it has between 10,000 and 50,000 downloads and believe it
cost £3. On that basis then the income could potentially be between
£30,000 and £150,000 - obviously I don't know whether the developer
gets 100% of the app fee and what costs there are to develop/maintain,
you will probably know a lot more then me. However to me that is
potentially a very good income from the application.

I believe I know the numbers and it's closer to 30.000£ than to
150.000£.
Plus, a lot of that was BEFORE the Logitech App came out.
Google gets 30% and the tax man between 25% and 50% so do your math,
how many years can you live off that?

It's the same with iPeng. iPeng is still doing fine in comparison but
it's at the brink of what justifies a full-scale effort. I would
probably not start to develop it know if I didn't already have it, at
least not for the money.

Logitech keeps changing so much on the Squeezebox System that you can't
just sit back and keep counting money.

If one was particularly cynical, one could construe Flatterman's single

lead people to believe he was back on the case; so encouraging any
doubters to go ahead and purchase the app.

I hope I am proved wrong.

The actual income % is very interesting so thanks for sharing. However
at £30,000 less google amount and tax of 40% its still 13k (which is

calculate it from his companies point of view:
14.000*3€/2,5y*0,7=16.800€ / year = 1400€ / month.

Economically at common rates 1400€ justify 14h of development or

If he just paid it out to himself, he'd get around 700€ / month. That's
what people get in Germany that don't work at all (Hartz 4 +

I'm actually extremely skeptic about Android tablet business right now.
Honeycomb tablet sales so far have been homeopathic and Amazon's Kindle
Fire not being based on Honeycomb will not really help.
I believe you'll have to focus on th lower end platforms and then we
are back to square 1: Android customers don't want to pay for Apps.
I don't think it's just the mere price, it's also the more complicated
payment process compared with iOS and the fact that you have to enter
credit card details on a mobile device (let alone the fact that paid
Apps are still not available in all countries and on all devices).

There's a reason even Rovio (the maker of Angry Birds) believe you
can't make money with paid Apps on Android.

I think you also need to consider that the app was on sale for 6euros
at some point, according to the website, also there was a major rewrite
in May - see post #440 - I bought on the back of this and many other
would have done, so potentially would have seen a peak in May.

I guess this is the risk that you take in purchasing an app that the

Re: [slim] KFI 640 AM Los Angeles

Have the Logitech Boom, with the server update installed indicated in
the previous post. (thanks!)

Seems I still can't access KFI (or, for that matter, San Francisco's
KNEW). As they're both Clear Channel, I'm wondering if OPML URLs have
changed, or if Clear Channel station streams have become
curtailed/blocked. (not sure about the latter, as I can still stream
San Diego's KOGO, another Clear station)

Could it be something as simple as resetting the Boom to communicate
properly with the new server software update installed on my PC? (I've
rebooted the Boom several times). Or have URLs changed?

Suggestions/ideas appreciated!

Thanks!

Cez.

Bluegaspode and Pippin, your comments about the financial aspects of the
app are irrelevant. Who cares what the tax rates are or what other
expenses he has? People are buying an app, not a share of his company.
How much or how little money he makes is his issue. Businesses fail all
the time, just usually not in this way.

I'm sure a big part of his starting the project was, like you guys, the
challenge/fun of it. But whether it's been a great success or a dud is
nobody's concern. The people this guy is screwing are the ones who paid
to contribute to his success.

I think this guy's disloyalty to the community that supported him is

Sorry, that's nonsense.
He sold an App, not some community participation.
If you purchased the App and it doesn't work, send a support request to
his support e-mail.

Writing stuff in the community is fun/marketing/service but it's not
part of the business he's doing there.

And he's not screwing anybody, SqueezeCommander for most people is
still the best working Android App around. Is Logitech screwing their
customers because their Android App doesn't work on a number of
devices? That lack is much more serious than SqueezeComamnder's.

No one can promise endless upgradability, especially in squeezebox
context, If I understand the 3rd party devs , the interface against
the server changes often.

The best effort any third party app can do is to clearly claim which
ss/sc/sbs/lms version(s) that work and something of the short term
future if such plans exists.

Another way would be to eventually develop squeezeblob2 or what you
have and charge again if you practically have rewritten sqeezeblob1
from ground up to support all changes, this is not uncommon practice
for longlived software often with discounts for owners of the old
software.

shouldn't be a statement about Flattermans behaviour or if its
justified by his income or not.

I think the current development here is sad indeed, but obviously
flatterman decided that there are more important things in his life now
than observing the community.

And why should he pull the trigger? His 3€ app is working fine on most
devices and still serves many people very good. It's still the much
much better alternative compared to what we get for free from Logitech
- it would be an even bigger miss if it was removed from the market
(even if it doesn't have support via the forum anymore).
I still recommend it to everyone asking.

And for those where it doesn't work, there are very easy ways to get
the money back on the Android market. Much much easier than with Apple
for instance (I can click an a single button myself for each purchase
to just refund it, also every user has a simple 'Request

Logitech also doesn't stop selling their devices, just because for some
users the alarm doesn't work.
Or the iTunes integration.
Or the [put in your favourite personal bug(s)]

Don't understand me wrong: I'm definitely on your side. Everyone who
sells Apps on the AppStore should provide good and excellent support.
But if they don't lets try to be objective about what one can really
expect from his purchase. Its often much much less than we are used to.

[slim] Unable to install any Android controller apps

2011-10-04 Thread elision

Hi.

I've bought a cheap (£70) 7 inch tablet running Android 2.2.

In general, I've found it to be a nice little toy and I can surf, check
my e-mails, install apps, and that sort of thing without any problems.

What I can't seem to do, however, is to install any of the Squeezebox
controller apps which is really the reason why I bought it.

On the Google Market, I can find the apps but I'm told that This app
is incompatible with your Unknown Generic. I guess that this is the
price I pay for buying an unbranded tablet.

Why does the app show up as being incompatible? Is there any voodoo
that I can do to download Squeeze Commander, Logitech or any other
controller?

I've also tried on SlideMe which shows no compatibility issues for
Squeeze Commander but, having never done this before, I don't want to
pay for something which might not work.

Any suggestions, anyone, please?

Thanks, Ian.

2011-10-04 Thread maggior

In a couple of days I'll be the proud owner of a Xoom tablet. I'm
looking forward to playing around with Andriod.

This app looks interesting but I have one question - does it do gapless
playback? If not, is that in the pipeline to be impelemented? I looked
at the website and in the forum here and didn't seen anything.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] KFI 640 AM Los Angeles

2011-10-04 Thread JimInPT

Sahara/RossMan, here's the URL I'm using (from Home/Favorites/(hover
over KFI, choose Edit):

http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s32618formats=aac,ogg,mp3,wmpro,wma,wmvoicepartnerId=16serial=fce67573ce00a188bd6d11788b6ae5ca

That's all one very long URL; make sure you copy the whole thing
without the . portion. Can't remember how I got this, but I
haven't touched this URL in months and it's now working perfectly in
the 7.7.0 r33539 build.

Since I started installing 7.7 builds, I've tuned KFI every time;
almost never worked previously.

It's working with a SB Classic, two Booms and a Radio, simultaneously
and synced.

Hope this helps.

gapless playback is supported.
Also synchronization should be working fine on the Xoom.

I'm a non-technical person. I'd be willing to pitch in, but would need
more clear instructions on how to load it on my phone (which does seem
to allow non-Marketplace programs).

Re: [slim] KFI 640 AM Los Angeles

2011-10-04 Thread MrRossMan

This maybe the reason the Boombox was discontinued as more and more
stations are changing transmission methods.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us to let us know that you're having trouble
accessing a stream through TuneIn. The stream that you're trying to
access uses a format that's not compatible with your operating system
and/or device. You can ask the broadcaster to provide TuneIn with
streams that are compatible. We suggest an mp3 stream for digital home
products and an AAC stream for mobile users.

Sincerely,

Kyle

JiminPT,

Thanks for sending the enhanced link to KFI. I'm sorry to report,
though, that like my own original link, it's non-responsive too. :-(

For now, KFI (as well as KNEW) remain streamless. :-( :-(

Cez.

Just open the apk file on your phone and it will install. Use the file
explorer app.

The scrolling function seems to work properly now. I tried it on
various screens - Albums, Genres, Playlists, Music Folder, current
playlist, all the places where before it was unreadable worked
normally. I'm very pleased, it should be quite usable and useful now.
(Thanks to Jeff for answering what I guess was a dumb question, on how
to install it)

I did find one bit of erratic behavior. What I did was to scroll
through different listings, as above, and then added various things to
the current playlist. I then attempted to save that new current
playlist, as a playlist, using the command to do so at the bottom of
current playlist. The screen changed properly, but when I touched the
input field for the keyboard to appear, the input area at the top
started dancing up and down. It disappeared into the upper edge of the
display, then dropped down to reappear, then back up, etc. The
keyboard didn't move. I was able to enter the new playlist name. When
the keyboard was retracted, the dancing stopped. The Playlist was saved
in the proper folder on the Win XP PC running SBS.

My phone is an HTC Incredible 2.

Thank you for your work on this.

Yep, unfortunately that's still an issue (not limited to HTC this time).
You would also see it in the search screen etc.. I'm tempted to still
release this build, as at least it does work again on HTC/Gingerbread
devices.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-10-04 Thread drnackers

Hi Stefan,

Congrats on this app it is the most used one I own, just wanted to know
if there was a way I can keep service running - I have a damaged android
2.2 phone which I want to setup and leave as a 'cheapy' squeezebox but
the timeout means i have to keep activating it.

Would be great if there was an option to just keep it running...

Thanks again for the best app out there...
