Hi. Thanks for the update. As I said I've got ios 8.4 but hope to stay
with that for a while.

My wife is the main SiriusXM listener. And she loves the fact that as
she roams the house, as she does most of the time, she's listening in
the LR, Kitchen, breakfast room, bathroom, and even her giant walk in
closet. That's one of the reasons why we love the Squeezebox ecosystem
and why listening on a fixed computer doesn't help. It helps me at work,
but here I'm listening to music from sources other than Sirius. We used
a computer connected to our stereo for internet streaming 10 years ago.
I hate to have to go backwards!

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-16 Thread bpa

This post is long and a more of a brain dump to help others think about
and discuss the issue.

I've done a bit of investigation into Chromecast to see what sort of
solution is possible and whether it would be usable.

As background I've had an original Chromecast for a few years and I've
ordered a Chromecast Audio.

As I see it Chromecast Audio is interesting to LMS users because for non
technical users it is a low cost standalone piece of hardware that can
provide over wifi/ethernet - audio out at hires both digital and
analogue, unlike the alternatives such as Raspberry Pi with Additional
DAC and downloaded s/w which need "assembly".

Making use of Chromecast Audio with LMS can be done in two ways
1. change Chromecast Audio device into a Squeezelite type player - this
would require rewriting the device software i.e. rooting it.
2. enable LMS to send compatible audio to standard Chromecast.

Early Chromecast devices could be be rooted but current ones cannot.
Since Google have taken steps to prevent rooting it is not a good long
term approach. So putting a version of Squeezelite onto Chromecast is
not practical - it doesn't matter what OS is running.

Enabling LMS to send Chromecast compatible streams is a better solution
for many reason
- since there are other "cast players" - it seems to be feasible
- Google is unlikely to take steps to stop it as the "cast players" are
using documented interfaces
- the approach will work with all Chromecast enable devices not just
Audio i.e. Gen 1 & 2 Chromecast for TV, Chromecast enabled TVs (e.g.
Sony) and speakers (e.g. Sony & LG Flow)

I'm not sure if anybody has tested the suggested "cast player" noted in
earlier posts but they are written in Javascript and use node.js and
npm. To get them going required loading up a lot of packages and even
then some didn't work as they were out of date (i.e. API used had been
deprecated). I don't believe these packages and Node.js are a good basis
for a LMS solution. To get to understand Chromecast underpinnings -
I've played around with PyChromecast - a Python based "cast player" and
it was easier to set up.

The message format used by Chromecast is Google Protocol Buffers (aka
Protobuf) which serializes structured data. To help encode/decode
messages there is a special Protobuf compiler which supports C++, Java
and Python. Other languages such as Perl may be supported by 3rd parties
but Perl work stopped in 2011 and it is not clear if the Perl support is
complete.

A Chromecast player is basically a browser which runs a single page.
Like a browser page it has background, text and multimedia elements such
as video or audio. The Chromecast application is in two parts a Cast
Sender and a Cast Receiver. A Cast Receiver is an application created
using HTML, Javascript and CSS. It is loaded onto a Cast device (for
example, a Chromecast) through a URL that is accessible over the network
to which the Cast device is connected. There is a basic Default Receiver
which can play a media item and show text. Custom Receiver apps can be
defined (e.g. fancy background , DRM) but they must be registered with
Google and the Custom Receiver app is loaded from a specific server.
Since receivers are loaded from Specific servers - it seems the
Chromecast will only work if connected to Internet. All media played or
shown by a Chromecast device is obtained from a server using http.

A command line (i.e. not using Android or Chrome) Cast Sender
application can tell a Chromecast device to load a specific Receiver
application and then it will interact with the receiver to play media
and change what is displayed. For basic use with LMS on a Chromecast
Audio device the Default Receiver app is sufficient and so there is no
need to develop a Custom Receiver app.

The Cast Sender Application can tell the Cast Receiver told to play an
URL for a file or an audio stream with relevant cover art and title text
and if compatible Receiver will play it without any further interaction
with the Sender - just requesting data from a HTTP server. This is a bit
like using Local Player which plays the file directly rather askign for
LMS to send the files.

I don't think this mode is suitable for use with LMS as there are
unsupported formats (e.g. WMA) and probably other issues. It seems that
LMS support Sender will have to provide a http server and request an
appropriate HTTP stream from LMS and tell Receiver to play it augmented
by metadata (artwork,Track info, Artist etc). It is possible the
current uPNP support in LMS might help but only if the Protobuf Perl
support is adequate - otherwise providing a Sender app written in C++ or
Python interacting with LMS could prove to be a challenging mash-up.

As I see it now, more investigation is needed but it is on the LMS side
- mainly determining how to create the http stream that the Chromecast
device will play and how to interact with LMS as a SB player.

Do you have a way to check the power supply?
I don't recall with the SB2's, but are there wireless versions? If so,
is this one? I know the SB3/Classics can have wifi card failures which
make the unit appear dead, but will come to life with the wifi card
removed (of course, then you must use wired, or try to replace the wifi
card).

Very interesting. I've been giving some thought to what I will switch
to when the SB is no longer viable and this device is high on my list.
My current LMS usage consists of:
- Spotify (using Triode's plugin)
- Local music (just a small library of things not on Spotify)
- Tunein
- Multi player sync is very important to me.

If I replaced all my players with Chromecast Audio devices, I'm not sure
why I'd want to continue using LMS at all. What are the key features
that would make me want to keep LMS?

If you replaced all your SB players - I agree it makes no sense.

This thread started by user hypothesising about using the Chrombebix
hardware and replacing the s/w - besides not being possible at the
moment some very odd ideas were suggested (put LMS on Chromecast !!) so
I wanted to ground the thread into reaility about what could be
achieved.

The only use case I can see is where a user has a number of SB players
but say wants some speakers in Kitchen ( but has no spare SB player).
The Kitchen speakers will also be used by partner, kids etc from their
devices. Bluetooth speakers have quality issues as well as connectivity.
So using Chromecast Audio - the Kitchen speakers can be used to play LMS
or audio from other sources such as phones or tablets.

Is the a red light in the optical connection ?

If not then the PSU is definitly dead and a new PSU would worth
checking.

If it is a Wireless SB2 and there is a red light - you could try
removing thre WLAn card as a faulty WLAN card stops SB3/SB3 etc. from
working.

I enjoy listening to Sirius stations in my car with an adapter, but my
major usage was in my home. Now that the SB system will no longer stream
Sirius I intend to cancel my yearly subscription which renews in
November. I cancel reluctantly because like I said I do listen in the
car occasionally. It's not worth it to me to pay the subscription fee
and not have home access. I love the Sirius Sinatra station especially
the First Friday With Francis Albert 24 hour program. I can't drive my
car for 24 hours just to hear Frank all day (although I've been tempted
).
Question: Is anyone working on resolving this Sirius issue? Is there any
hope that it may be resolved and ,perhaps, I should hold on to my
subscription? Any progress updates? Thank you very much.

To a large extend, this is what I do with squeeze2upnp, as you know. It
shows LMS a proper squeezelite instance, receives the audio data, buffer
it locally and then offer to UPnP players a web server where they simply
'GET' this buffered audio data with a bit of header addition/byte order
manipulation. Then it also does the control command / feedback
translation between LMS 'protocol' and UPnP 'protocol' (pause, stop,
seek, timing, metadata, format negotiation, volume, next track
handling). I wish in reality this is a simple as that, as their are many
nasty details, but the principle remains valid

So, re-creating an HTTP stream for the chromecast device from the LMS
sent data would be very simple for me. What I don't know is how
complicated the control part is.

For audio format translation, at the beginning I thought about doing
decoding/encoding inside squeeze2unp and the possibility is still here,
but I decided to focus on the mode where sq2u is more a simple forwarder
of audio data and let the LMS do the transcoding. This to say that
indicating to LMS what codecs are supported based on chromecast device
so that only acceptable format are sent is easy as well.

I would have thought that the B+ would be adequate especially if you do
not use Jivelite, not really a question for me as I only use 2B's for
audio.

My electronics engineer side says the mcap is overkill BUT its like £3

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-16 Thread CommanderROR

@bpa
Thanks for your analysis. I think "Casting" from LMS to Chromecast Audio
is the only thing that makes sense. The "point" of it would be
a) Having cheap, compact and high-quality SB Hardware
b) Having a solution for streaming services that LMS does not fully
support (like Google Music)

About the advantages of LMS ovet CC: At the current time LMS is much
nicer and easier to use, since the Server-Client Setup offers a number
of advantages over the Smartphone-CC approach. To get music playing it
currently takes quite a few action for Chromecast, while LMS needs just
one. This might change over time.

Sync will probably be a problem with LMS - CC implementation, just like
with Squeeze2upnp, so if that's your main target, then this is probably
not for you. However, Multiroom functionality for CC is currently almost
nonexistent, and it is unclear how Google plans to implement it without
some type of "Server" in the setup. Currently the best you get it
multiple CC devices playing the same radio/stream, but no differet
zones, grouping and ungrouping, stereo pairs, surround setups etc. CC
for Audio is still in early stages, and will likely only show it's true
potential in a few months...or not...

There would be no sync between Chromecast and SB player. I expect if an
API compliant proper Cast Sender is implemented then Chromecast "sync"
would be available.

AFAICT but haven't found the exact quote Google have said they will
support multi room on Chromecast Audio but not just yet (i.e.sometime in
the future). I expect this means same audio output of multiple
Chromecast Audio devices. Not sure if the term "synchronised" was used
by Google or just the reviewers.

How Chromecast Audio will implement proper "synchronisation" would be
interesting but with TCP/IP interconnection it's not impossible as Sonos
have done it.

lots of replacement powersupplys on amazon.com. just google "power
supply squeezebox sb2" and you'll get a lot of hits. if you get the
right power rating and postive/negative post, it will work.

One draw of using Chromecast is the support for new cloud services, an
area in which LMS is falling behind.
As CommanderROR said, in his opinion, the LMS usage model is preferable
than jumping from app to app for Chromecast.
If Chromecast works with LMS as a player as you gave described above,
will that open up a new kind of plugin that can front any Chromecast
supported cloud service to connected Chromecast devices, even if they
don't officially have LMS support?

I think this would work. Right connector size, center positive, more
milliamps than original. Cheap.

These so-called cloud services are all much of a muchness (differing
only in the amount of utter rubbish they serve up, Spreaker being a case
in point). Their main purpose is to tie the user into a recurrent
payment, I'm not really interested in spending more money on content
which is of little more importance than the latest Hollywood pap dressed
up as a blockbuster.

What I do want is a reliable replacement for the now defunct Logi
devices, which can easily access the coherent LMS system.

I don't want to depend on using a smartphone as a battery-hungry
controller with multiple apps installed to access one or two basic
servces.

Hi Stefan. SqueezePad has stopped working on my iPad 3 (ios 8.4) since
the last update. Does this mean I'll have to upgade to ios 9 to use it
again? I hope not as each ios update makes my iPad slower. The app will
not load and bounces back to the home screen. Regards Mal
