[slim] Building the best Pi LMS Player

2015-11-15 Thread pkfox

Hi all I decided to start a new thread as the original thread *preparing
for the demise of my transporter* was suffering from thread drift :-)

I'm basically trying to put together a shopping list to build the best
quality player I can using the Pi as the base - here is my first pass at
a shopping list

1) Pi version 2
2) Official 7" touch screen
3) Official Screen case ( is there one ? )
3) Dac pro sound card ( is this the best there is ? )
4) piCorePlayer

What I need is confirmation that all these pieces will fit into one case
and if they will - what case do I need and do all these parts come with
all the screws and what have you to complete the build process in one
go? Hope I'm not asking too much :-)

We can't stop here this is bat country. RIP Hunter S Thompson.

[slim] streaming to Squeezebox

2015-11-15 Thread danco

So I'm wondering if there is a way of taking music that is streaming to
an iPad (NOT stuff that is stored on the iPad) or a Mac (perhaps iPad
preferred) and sending it to my Squeezebox.

Why do I want to do this? Well, my SB is the only piece of equipment I
have that can provide sound through my stereo system with source on a
computer or iPad.

Until the changes in the BBC earlier in the year, I was able to use
their Listen Again with no problems, and it was a major source for me.
But since then, whether using BBC iPlayer or BBC iPlayer Extra, it is
just unreliable. I have the latest version of the plugins and the new
parser, but it doesn't help. Between the BBC and my ISP, I can count on
half or more of the things I want to listen to being interrupted.

So I am looking for other methods that don't involve new hardware.

Something like Nicecast on my computer might work, but I suspect there
are better options.

Re: [slim] Building the best Pi LMS Player

There is no "the" best PI LMS Player:p

If you want to go the Touch Way - the official 7" Display is your
route.
If you want to go the Transporter / 43 cm Way - these "official" /
Inoffical cases are to light and small.

A RPI 2 is overkill for a Player only setup - a b+ should do it (mines
are underclocked)

A RPI Player thats worth to called the best one always had to be some
diy hours in it to match your wishes - otherwise its just one of the
best

Danco, a few more details of your set-up may help in regard to the
streaming.

It seems to me that perhaps some network optimisation may help.

I know that you say that you don't want new hardware, but an rpi B2 with
LMS on would make for a reliable low cost (hide it away) solution.

Then ipeng on the pad thingy.

AFAIK there is an official case for the 7" - but there's no room for a
sound card/DAC. Then there is another case for the screen where the Pi
board sits on the back without casing. That works with DACs.

The latter look like this:

This is the official case:

If the local server streaming (i.e.: from files on the computer to the
SBT is fine, without drop-outs, then indeed it would suggest that the
web interconnect is somehow faulty.

It might pay to try and resolve these issues first, as any change or
alteration to your set-up will not show any benefit if the web streaming
is flaky.

Easy things to look at are wireless channel usage (any neighbour
overlapping your channel?)

If speed is not important ,stay with the b/g group.

Reposition the router (put it high if possible).

You can try these things without too much disruption.

Also use something like speedtest dot net to get an aggregate of your
download speeds, perhaps the ISP is throttling at peak usage periods.

Ronnie.

Re: [slim] streaming to Squeezebox

2015-11-15 Thread danco

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, never had any errors with local streaming. And I'm using Devolo
Homeplug, not wireless. Network Diagnostics does show the ISP traffic
light turn from green to red sometimes, and then back to green in a
short or long time (never any need to reboot router/modem).

ShairTunes seems to be working for playing local music on my iPad to my
Squeezebox. I had a few problems, but I think they were my own
misunderstanding.

Doesn't seem to work with the BBC iPlayer Radio app on the iPad, though,
as I don't think that allows Airplay and so does not allow ShairTunes.

Just for the record, using iPlayer Radio on iPad got me a half-hour
program with no dropouts. Could be luck, but I suspect that this holds
on to the stream better than the iPlayer (and Extra) plugins for LMS.

The Harmony system still is one way only: you can only send commands to

It might be worth a shot, but why not reset the router and reboot the

You could also ask the ISP if there is a firmware upgrade available

So you'll end up with two boxes ? - how will you connect the screen to
the pi ?

Hi.
There are several DAC options for you to choose from - also it depends
whether you want optical out, analog out or an integrated amplifier.

And probably many more.

I'd suggest having a look at the shairtunes2 plugin from disaster123.
That will make SBes to AirPlay devices.

That sounds like a possibility, and I see there are other suggestions.

I took a look, and there is an experimental waveinput for Mac, but when
I looked at the thread it said "unzip the attached file" and I couldn't
see any file attached.

I don't use it (and don't use a Mac), so can't be of any further help on
WaveInput.

Sure, but since I want my setup to serve as player and LMS server at the
same time, I'm looking into a Odroid C1 + HiFi Shield bundle with PSU
and SSD drive.

But you're right, a Pi B+ for a player is enough.

I very much suspect that there is a problem with the connection to my
ISP.

There could be local issues as I am using Devolo Homeplug, but
everything (including drops in general web browsing) suggests that the
connection there is dropping and restarting enough to ruin iPlayer since
the BBC changes. I've tried, as an experiment, moving my laptop close to
the router (not convenient for regular use) and changing to wifi with no
improvement. I am using a 2013 MacBook Pro, and have tried a couple of
routers.

Once I start going the hardware route, I would want to consider ethernet
cabling between router and computer (unfortunately they are and have to
be in different rooms).

I've just set up a Pi2-IQAudioDAC+ with a 7" touch screen. I've used the
'perspex frame mount for the screen'
and I plan to use a 'Pibow-Audio case'
(https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/pibow-audio?variant=5472074753) to
house the Pi2-IQAudioDAC+, though I await the Pibow-Audio case to figure
out how to attach it to the back of the screen!
