Classical music is hard to get right. And the sources the plugin uses
certainly are not optimized for classical music.

Yes, my expectations were raised by a Youtube training video, but I
could see nothing. All very odd, but I got there - or I stumbled on a
solution! I always thought networking was a black art!

I had seen the (i) information button - I wonder if that is more useful
for popular music. I have presently uninstalled the plugin while try and
tidy up my 20 year old flac collection. What a mess!

How very odd. I was expecting a network folder to appear in the Windows
File manager when I was messing earlier, but after your \\ipaddress

So, I have LMS on the rPi accessed from this Chromebook, and have got

same Chromebook with Remote Desktop I have set up a Samba link to the

Thanks Jim.

I have such a raggy database I wonder if I could live long enough to get
it all sorted!

I have, however, make some progress this afternoon having run Samba on
PiCorePlayer and worked out how to use Samba on my Chromebook, which is,
of course, a locked down Linux box.

Getting Samba to work on my old Windows PC has for now beaten me, but it
is of no consequence as I can see the relevant files from the same
Chromebook I use as an LMS controller.

It's a steep learning curve for me!

I must find the energy to rip the rest of my CD collection. As I was
moving around in the Army the crystal cases were binned years ago in
favour of a very large DJs ring binder.

Re: [slim] Lms

Cover Art
Sorry if you know this but feel it is important to mention how LMS deals
with cover art and the order it uses to decide what to display

If album art is embedded in files it will use the embedded art from the
FIRST track file it finds within a folder - having different cover art
in different files is therefore a redundant exercise.
If no embedded art is found LMS looks for the existence of folder.jpg or
cover.jpg within the album folder and uses that.
Competent rippers such as dbPoweramp can be set up in such a way as to
not create embedded art in FLACs but instead to always create
folder.jpg

A useful online resource for high quality artwork is
albumartexchange.com - account required but free.

Amongst other things MAI can look up and display Artist images. If you
want that - it looks superb in Material - then you can designate a
specific artist artwork folder. MAI will then scan for artist images and
place them into this folder. Usefully if it can't find an image it will
also create a 0 byte file called "exact artist name.missing". You can
use then manually populate with an image of your choice by finding a
.jpg or .png of said arist and renaming it "exact artist name".jpg and
delete the .missing file accordingly.

Install the pCP SAMBA extension from the bottom of the LMS page in pCP.
Then you should be able to see the files on the pCP USB drive from your
desktop computer.
However ... generally not a good idea to rely on a single copy of your
music files - especially if you are going to be editing tags.

Ref: MAI (Music and Artist Information)

Plugin now installed and library rescanned. I initially thought its
purpose was not what I wanted as the "Information" clicky in the
uninstalled plugin list returned an empty page and I had not much to go
on.

But the plugin has now been installed and the library cleared and
rescanned. Lots more data in there and some more album covers display,
but by no means all. Many of the CDs without cover art were privately
published by Cathedrals, so the data may not be in the general database,
and many of those CDs were bought and ripped 20 years ago. A couple of
Albums display the rear and not the front of the case artwork! I must
have an old and very untidy library which will never be cleaned up
fully. Some of the flacs were given me by others sourced goodness know
where. I have two or even three copies of some albums!

Is it possible to edit the raw files from within the Raspberry Pi, or
will I have to figure out how Samba works and edit from another machine?
Or else plug the USB drive back into my PC and edit there.

Many, but not all of my CDs I will have ripped on Foobar.

Are there plans to add a CD ripper to the PiCorePlayer suite. It would
be rather good to plug a USB CD drive into my rPi and rip to default
settings and default folder.

So many questions. So much to learn. Thanks for your patience.

It's always useful to search the forums to see if there are existing
threads on the problem.. IMHO the seach facility within the forums

entering my search term followed by "site:forums.slimdevices.com" to do
a first search. You can then narrow that Google special term down to
the sub-forum URL if need be.

It is the plugin to do that ... but you have to run a scan after you
install the plugin ... and double-check the settings

Importer settings
- Find music and artist information online during library scan
- Look up missing genres for albums from online music services
- Download missing cover art from online sources
- Download and pre-cache artist pictures from online sources
- Only download pictures for main artists, but not all contributors
(composers, conductors etc.)
- Store placeholder file ("artist.missing") if artist pictures are to be
downloaded, but cannot be found.

You would have to click a button for LMS updates - and it can be
configured to notify you (e.g. via green spot in top right of Material
UI).
However, available updates to core pCP do not (currently at least) get
flagged anywhere except on this forum.

I'm not new to LMS but very new to piCorePlayer. Will it make all
necessary upgrades upgrades silently in the background? The upgrade box
is checked and LMS plugins are set to update.

Will I see any notifications? Presumably there will in some
circumstances be a forced reboot.

I am very pleased with my new Raspberry Pi and thanks all who made that
possible.

This is OK if you are running a system which makes no use of internet
services or external connections.

However if you do use internet services then the need to update
(regularly not necessarily "constantly") can vary from system required
changes to SSL/TLS (e.g. Heartbleed, TLS 1.1,1.2 downgrades ), to better
support of podcasts or to support changes in internet service such as
Tidal, Deezer, Accuradio etc. If you do not update often services break
or at worst leave your home network system open to a cyber attack or
theft of personal details.

For the last 2 years, many users have posted "my favorite station just
stopped playing" and very often it is because their system (OS and/or
LMS) is not up to date. If the LMS is there for a dependent, often the
dependent will not complain and not say anything and suffer the lack of
service.
