Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.1 now on the AppStore

2009-04-11 Thread Balthazar_B

I'll file a bug, but wanted to note I've been experiencing some odd
behavior with iPeng 1.1. It sounds a bit like the issue that has been
noted with failure to consistently control SN sessions, but in my case
I'm running it against SqueezeCenter. Some particulars:

SC v7.3.3 - 25911 (Ubuntu);
BoomBox (WiFi) and Controller/Receiver (wired) on the network,
synchronized;
BoomBox is the point of control for iPeng;
Music library is coded as flac;
Did an upgrade in place of iPeng to v1.1.

When a selection from my music library is playing, often iPeng will
lose control. For instance, it will be impossible to pause/stop or
change the track selection to another (or select another artist, etc.),
while the current track continues to play fine. Interestingly, the
Controller has no problem at all with any of this. I've cleared the
cache a couple of times, but no effect. In some cases control returned
after some minutes, but in others, I've had to resort to the Controller
under the baleful gaze of my wife. :) For the most part, earlier
versions of iPeng worked fine, so this is giving me a bit of
consternation.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Just curious as to why the switch from kwiki to mediawiki (the switch in

to ease the process of content migration from other wiki engines,
although I haven't examined this capability.

[slim] Controller can't connect via wireless

2008-03-07 Thread Balthazar_B

Just received my Duet set yesterday and have experienced a couple of
problems (the other will be in the Linux forum). The first major
problem is that the Controller is not able to see my wireless network
SSID (or connect to it if I manually enter it via Other Network). I'd
be pulling my hair out if I had any.

A few facts to start:

1) I'm using a Cisco 1240AG AP with a VERY strong signal (perhaps the
cause of my hair loss?). I've got it operating on its G radio, with
AES/CCM ciphers. I'm on a slightly older version of Cisco's IOS
sofware (12.3(8)JA2). I can post a sanitized version of my AP config
if requested.

2) My SB3s have had no problem connecting to the wireless network;
occasionally, I've had issues with other devices (e.g., the odd laptop)
that has required updating its network drivers.

3) While trying to connect last night, my network's SSID came up for
just an instant on the Controller, then disappeared before I could
complete the connection.

4) The Controller detects a couple of much weaker SSIDs in my
neighborhood, so I know it's not blind.

Where should I go from here? Suggestions?

Thanks to all!

Good suggestion...I updated the firmware (but made no config changes)

Re: [slim] Sc7?

2008-02-06 Thread Balthazar_B

Looking for a little advice.

Currently I'm running the latest SS 6.5.x on Ubuntu 7.04. I want to
upgrade to SC7. My thought is to do the following:

1) Completely uninstall SS 6.5 and remove the SS directories.

2) Upgrade Ubuntu to 7.10 in place.

3) Install the SC7 bits and any new plug-ins.

I realize that wiping everything clean and installing the OS and
Squeeze pieces is safer, but is there anything really wrong with the
above? One reason I want to upgrade the OS in place is that there are
a few settings and utilities (e.g., NX Server) that I'd rather not
rebuild from scratch if I can avoid it.

Thanks!

If you're looking for something to run some recent flavor of Linux, you
might try:

http://minipc.aopen.com/Global/spec.htm

Now some of the bits on these machines *may be* too new for drivers to
have been written, but a little research should tell the tale.

If you're looking for something even smaller, there are many DIY,
low-power setups that would run Slimserver quite well.

Re: [slim] FLAC Test Results

2007-07-04 Thread Balthazar_B

Time to check your hard disk with ScanDisk.

Select My Computer from the Start menu, right-click on your disk
(probably C: unless you have your music files on a separate volume),
select Properties, go to the Tools tab, and then under Error Checking,
click the Check Now button.

It's extremely rare for this error checking-and-correction operation to
damage any files (although if your disk has bad blocks, all bets are
off), but it's helpful if you have the important stuff backed up.

Other utilities, from Symantec and others, will do the same check and
fix functions.

Couple of suggestions:

1) Post this issue on the Linux/Unix forum board, where Debian/Ubuntu
experts are more likely to see it.

2) Give more detail on I can no longer access Slimserver. Do you
mean from a Squeezebox? Or you can't establish a web session? Have
you looked at logs? That kind of thing.

I should mention that I've been successfully running all the nightly
Slimserver releases since pre-6.5.2 on Ubuntu 7.04 i386 Desktop
version. I did run into problems with the AMD64 server version which
led me to switch (I didn't try SS on the i386 Server version of
Ubuntu).

Not sure you can get back to 6.5.1 without a total uninstall of 6.5.2
and reinstall from scratch. But folks on the Linux forum would know
for sure.

After much testing, I concluded that at least on an iPod, 128-bit

The digital audio input accepts a S/P-DIF digital audio signal having

Based on the specs, I'm guessing that they might benefit from some

perhaps not 3x the value (in my case; if I were equipping a home studio

it would be different). DynAudio makes wonderful car audio speakers,

considering the AudioEngines, although my guess -- not being easy to do
A:B comparisons -- is that the biamped Wharfs are likely to be better

Thanks for the suggestions!

That outlet on the AudioEngines is one of its nice features. It has
several other touches that make it nearly ideal when using an iPod as
the source, which I considered but came to think my wireless SB would
be superior in many ways (not least its connectivity to Internet
radio).

Some diffs between AE and the Wharf 8.2 Active (delimited by
semicolons; apparently there is no way to post a formatted table on
this board):

Item;AE;Wharf
Wattage;45/70 peak;60 LF/40 HF
LF driver;5;6.5
HF driver;22mm;1
Freq response;50Hz-22KHz;45Hz-24Khz

;;1 unbal phono
Dims;10x7x7.75;14.3x8.3x12.6
Weight;6.4kg/4kg;8kg ea

I think your idea of attaching handles to the speakers is brillant, and
something I'd look at doing. Ditto velcro. Thanks for the reply!

Do you know what kind of DAC the 2029A uses? I do find keeping the

rule of thumb, but of course in this case only if the monitor's DAC is
superior to the SB3's (which I have no basis to assume). There are
other digital amp monitors out there, though I must say I've liked the
other Genelecs I've heard.

Kyle Wrote:
Regarding the irony of this thread, I can only say that for me paying

True. As I said before, the cost/value ratio for DynAudio and other
high-end monitors does not justify their purchase. Having said that, I
want the best solution at reasonable cost, and generally speaking the
Wharfedale 8.2's seem like a better value for my purposes than the
AudioEngines, although the latter have much in the way of features to
recommend them.

With respect to other issues raised on the thread, I am attempting to
determine how I'll attenuate the output signal of the SB3 (2.1 Vrms) to
the monitors (0.775 Vrms input sensitivity). I don't know where in the
path the volume control on the monitors operates (if it's before the
amps then it is in essence a variable input voltage control; if between
amps and drivers I think the SB3 output could clip/fry the amps). The
otherwise excellent 8.2 Pro documentation does not address this
question.

And if the Cleanbox does eliminate any noise issues for this
application, that would seem a useful addition. I have read the wiki
entry on SB3 to balanced amp inputs, and there are still several open
questions (which is where the experience of others would be
instructive).

Thanks again for all the commentary!

Re: [slim] SB3 into active monitors

2007-05-10 Thread Balthazar_B

Here are some I have considered, or am considering:

Wharfedale 8.2 Pro Active:
http://www.wharfedalepro.co.uk/frames/monitor_diamond.html

KRK Rockit (budget line):
http://www.krksys.com/index2.php?cat=prodlandpage=rokit

E-MU (these have occasionally been on sale for as little as $95/ea):
http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?category=569subcategory=570product=14280

Event TR series:
http://www.event1.com/Products/TR_Series/Tuned%20Reference.htm

NHT m-00/s-00
http://www.nhthifi.com/products/m00.html
http://www.nhthifi.com/products/s00.html

I've liked the Yammies I've heard, but their MSP series fail the
cost/value ratio test for my application. Some of the above do as
well.

I suppose I should add that these monitors are not intended only for
outdoor use. I imagine they'll be listened to indoors as well, but in
places (e.g., garage, potting shed, rarely-used guest room) where I may
not want a dedicated installation of SB/speakers.

[slim] SB3 into active monitors

2007-05-09 Thread Balthazar_B

I've done several forum searches but didn't quite find what I was
looking for...

For some measure of portability (e.g., outdoors, in the garage -- in
general, anywhere that doesn't merit permanent installation of
SB/speakers), I'm looking at picking up a pair of active monitors
(leaning towards the Wharfedales at present, FWIW, but still
considering other options) that would let me schlep the SB3/monitors
pretty much anywhere I want. I know several forum members use active
monitors, and I'm wondering whether there's any significant downside to
using the unbalanced outs from the SB3 for this purpose. If there is,
what did you do to reasonably adapt the SB3 to balanced outs (and by
reasonably I'm not talking a $1K DAC, etc.).

Just trying to work out the details before pulling any triggers.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] SB3 into active monitors

2007-05-09 Thread Balthazar_B

I'm thinking a couple of meters per each run would be typical. I do
know cases where RF and other nasty noise has gotten into unbalanced
runs from preamps to amps, but I'm uncertain how sensitive unbalanced
runs from the SB to an active monitor would be (I guess this would be a
line input, no?).

Any other experiences or advice out there?

Only thing I'd add is that if you have a very large (or growing to be a
very large) music library, Sonos is probably not your best bet. Check
out the forums at sonos.com for more on this.

Way I see it, they're a little like the AMT: the limit will just snag
more and more people over time unless the underlying architecture is
changed.

Re: [slim] Which mp3 player?

2007-05-06 Thread Balthazar_B

I do understand what you said about two music libraries, but I've
decided that's the way to go after much experimentation. In my case, I
got an 80GB iPod (only easily portable thing that could come close to
accommodating most of my music collection in M4A format), did a batch
transcoding job to copy all the FLACs I had to a mirrored M4A library,
and now when I get a CD, I use REACT2 to simultaneously rip FLAC and
M4A tracks. Why an iPod over a Creative, Cowon or other device? Major
reason: I wanted to take my collection in the car and use my HU to
control the music, and for better or worse Apple pretty much has that
integration available in a way others do not. And in general the iPod
accessories market is larger (and therefore more competitive) than what
is available for other devices.

Heartily agree with the other posters on using something other than
lossless on a portable device for all the reasons stated. In terms of
the iPod, I found AAC (M4A) format slightly better in listening quality
(at a given bitrate) than either VBR or CBR Lame-encoded MP3.

If you go to Slimnetwork rather than the Slimserver, do you experience

Alternatively, if you run Softsqueeze on a separate computer against

You might try isolating the problem by using a direct ethernet
connection between the devices. If that works, go to wireless and
borrow/try a different access point. The problem sure feels
network-related, so that's what I'd look at first.

Do you have anything in your environment (wireless phone, microwave
oven, old 802.11b gizmos) that could be causing your wireless links to
drop and require re-initing?

[slim] Mac vs. Linux vs. Windows

2007-04-09 Thread Balthazar_B

I've tried some searches in the forums, but didn't find the thread I was
looking for.

I realize the difficulty of doing so on different hardware, but has
anyone done comparative performance benchmark testing of a recent
Slimserver version running on, say, a Mac Mini, a Linux box, and a
Windows XP box, with the music files on external storage (e.g., NAS
volume)? I've seen several reports of significant performance
increases when moving from XP to Linux, but I'm very curious as to
whether Mac OSX performance is closer to the former or the latter (or
superior to both).

On a related note, are Slimserver plug-ins all OS-agnostic, or will
some only work on one OS platform or another? I've noticed that some
are packaged as ZIP files, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Thanks!

The thread's getting a little off-track, although the discussion of
content access locally vs. over the net is interesting.

For the record, I'm running an Infrant NV+ box (which is basically a
linux-based multiprotocol file server with several additional daemons
for print services, etc.). My workstations are mostly
XP at this point, although I'm strongly considering adding a Mac Mini
as a Slimserver host (which prompted my original question). If anyone
is running SS6.5x on a Mini and accessing large libraries (approx. 70K
tracks, give or take) and could pass along their experiences, I'd be
most grateful.

Thanks!

[slim] Remote ideas: HTC?

2007-04-06 Thread Balthazar_B

There are a couple of HTC devices that may be interesting as Slim
remotes:

HTC Shift:

HTC Advantage:

Of course, they can also be used as cellphones, web browsers, UMPC-like
things, and for other mundane tasks :).

Main problem is that they're pretty damn expensive. I'd happily buy a
Logitech 2-way remote capable of controlling a Slim system that's all
tucked away in a closet (i.e., completely out of sight).

Re: [slim] Is Slimserver sustainable as Open Source?

2007-02-22 Thread Balthazar_B

Going back to the first message in this thread (and others similar to
it), I think the root issue underlying whatever frustration
users/customers are feeling is not really open vs. closed source.
Rather, it generally comes down to performance (i.e., perceived lack
of) and/or bugs (usually real, rarely imagined). As many have
mentioned, better development processes/control (incl. regression
testing, etc.) would help address the latter. The former is more
difficult, and perhaps a large portion of performance issues come down
to the code base. There may be certain operations that PERL, PHP,
etc., may never be able to perform as efficiently as C dialects or
other compiled programming languages.

I have no idea what's towards the top of Logitech/Slim's priority list,
but I'm wondering whether they aren't stepping back to take a look at
the whole server package, and figuring out whether some parts of it
shouldn't be modularized and then written using a code base that will
address sluggishness and other performance symptoms. Of course this
wouldn't be easy, but it would probably make it easier to release a
server-in-a-box product (if that's what they have in mind) that would
not get savaged by reviewers testing with large and/or complex media
libraries.

A very interesting idea. It would likely take only a little bit of
flash memory on the controller device (probably a better term than
remote) to cache the SS DB, and would cut down considerably on the
over-the-air transactions that would tend to make the control sluggish.
The synching could be done on-demand or trickled as DB changes were
being made on the backend.

But the key element of a successful control device is not so much its
processing power per se, but control interfaces that are optimized for
media (in this regard, while the iPod is not perfect, it excels in its
elegance and simplicity well beyond most of its competition).

If I rip using MAREO I don't 'think' I get that flexibility, plus I'd

certainly within Logitech's power to market a WiFi remote with a UI and

Nor do I want to carry around the equivalent of a tablet PC to run my
audio system (I should add that I also have a universal remote, the
chief virtue of which is that it replaces a bunch of others reasonably
well, although I don't much like its size). I'd rather have a smaller
device with a context-sensitive UI brilliantly designed to the task,
which in this case is navigating a variable number of songs, albums,
playlists, categories, etc. Apple didn't invent the jog wheel -- I saw
it on Sony VCRs over 20 years ago -- but they adapted it admirably
(IMHO) to host navigation functions in a simple but effective way. I'm
no fan of Apple and it's proprietary formats, but I have to give credit
where it's due.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Jog wheels are great, but the thing on
the front of the ipod is _not_ a jog wheel - it's a circular laptop
trackpad. The first gen ones were actual wheels, and I quite liked
them, but the current ones are far too inaccurate and lack physical
feedback. I hate them (YMMV, of course). Take a look at the front of
the Transporter - now THATS a jog wheel!

Too bad they didn't put it on the remote :). Actually, if they'd made
it an RF remote instead of IR -- and the requisite display and nav
functions -- that would probably seal the deal.

[slim] Re: Sonos-like remote?

2006-10-01 Thread Balthazar_B

Let's put it this way: if Apple had released the iPod with a web
interface for navigation instead of the simple but brilliant wheel
mechanism, it would have flopped in the marketplace (I suppose one
could say the Newton was the original flop). SanDisk, Creative, et al.
have pretty decent navigation mechanisms as well. A small device (as a
remote should be) whose essential function is navigation really needs
something like this, and IMHO that's one of the strongest points about
the Sonos (despite that the remote could still stand improvement).
Messing with a web interface compared with a device where hardware and
firmware are well-matched will almost always be a poorer user
experience.

I'm happy with the remote and the way things are right now. And I
certainly don't want to hide my Squeezebox. I think it looks great.

What you're suggesting should be optional. I'm very happy with the
price of the Squeezebox, particularly since its better, soundwise, than
the SONOS. The SONOS remote certainly looks cool, but its ridiculously
 expensive en looks HUGE.

The ideal remote, for me, would be a mix between the current remote and
the iPod video with that big, yet still portable screen and that scroll
wheel. But that, too, should be optional.

Have you tried the Nokia, btw?

I'd be more likely to get (and hide) a Transporter, and put the free
SqueezeBox in a back room somewhere (or tote it out to the deck with
some amp'd speakers, etc.), leaving no visible tuning aid in our main
room.

The nice thing about the device I mentioned in my first post is that
it's relatively small, but even better, incredibly inexpensive (much
less than the Sonos remote, anyway). With an onboard Linux or CE OS, a
developer could do pretty amazing things with UI/functionality,
particularly since it has tactile tracking (which is the main selling
point of the iPod, etc., IMHO).

Haven't tried the Nokia, but others report that it feels slow. I
understand it's also using a web-based interface, which generally means
compromises in functionality compared with a dedicated, optimized, fat
client UI. If I'm wrong about this, let me know.

[slim] Re: Yet Another Remote Idea

2006-09-08 Thread Balthazar_B

Michael: Yes, the device I linked to (and its successor) is a music
player. But the successor will have a quite powerful processor, the
tactile navigation, a powerful OS, and a screen with sufficient
resolution to serve as a remote if it had Wi-Fi and a dedicated remote
UI. My suggestion was for Slim Devices to see whether the Chinese mfr
could produce a Sonos-killer remote at low cost.

Siduhe: My main problem with web interfaces is that (even with Ajax)
they tend to trade lowest-common-demoninator functionality in exchange
for multiclient support. So to use one example, they probably won't be
able to take full advantage of iPod-style tactile navigation hardware
since it's so platform-specific.

[slim] Yet Another Remote Idea

2006-09-07 Thread Balthazar_B

I'm one of those people who stuffs all the audio gear in a closet, out
of sight. I use a universal remote supporting RF to control things.
Now the idea of Slimserver (and Transporter) appeals to me a lot, but
the execution of the Sonos system has some appeal, not least of all
because of its clever remote.

Now I've just read that the Chinese company that produces the
Miniplayer
(http://reviews.cnet.com/Meizu_Mini_Player_2GB_white/4505-6499_7-32034099-2.html?tag=nav)
is rumored to be coming out soon with a player in the same form factor,
but running a 522Mh chip and Windows CE as its OS (and a ridiculously
low price). How much of a stretch would it be if Slim Devices were to
contract with this mfr to add Wi-Fi and a nice fat client for
controlling the Slim system. This would pretty much eliminate the
dependency on line-of-sight control, and steal most of the thunder from
Sonos.

I realize that another potential solution involves leveraging Wi-Fi
capable PDA/phone devices with embedded browsers, etc., but from what I
can tell none of the solutions quite matches the elegance and
navigability of the Sonos remote. If I go down the Slim path this --
specifically a WM5-compatible widget -- is the solution I'd need to
use, I guess, but I'd pine for something better.

Thoughts? Am I just grasping at straws?
