Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.1 now on the AppStore
I'll file a bug, but wanted to note I've been experiencing some odd behavior with iPeng 1.1. It sounds a bit like the issue that has been noted with failure to consistently control SN sessions, but in my case I'm running it against SqueezeCenter. Some particulars: SC v7.3.3 - 25911 (Ubuntu); BoomBox (WiFi) and Controller/Receiver (wired) on the network, synchronized; BoomBox is the point of control for iPeng; Music library is coded as flac; Did an upgrade in place of iPeng to v1.1. When a selection from my music library is playing, often iPeng will lose control. For instance, it will be impossible to pause/stop or change the track selection to another (or select another artist, etc.), while the current track continues to play fine. Interestingly, the Controller has no problem at all with any of this. I've cleared the cache a couple of times, but no effect. In some cases control returned after some minutes, but in others, I've had to resort to the Controller under the baleful gaze of my wife. :) For the most part, earlier versions of iPeng worked fine, so this is giving me a bit of consternation. Anyone else experiencing this? -- Balthazar_B Balthazar_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7366 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62245 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Controller can't connect via wireless
Just received my Duet set yesterday and have experienced a couple of problems (the other will be in the Linux forum). The first major problem is that the Controller is not able to see my wireless network SSID (or connect to it if I manually enter it via Other Network). I'd be pulling my hair out if I had any. A few facts to start: 1) I'm using a Cisco 1240AG AP with a VERY strong signal (perhaps the cause of my hair loss?). I've got it operating on its G radio, with AES/CCM ciphers. I'm on a slightly older version of Cisco's IOS sofware (12.3(8)JA2). I can post a sanitized version of my AP config if requested. 2) My SB3s have had no problem connecting to the wireless network; occasionally, I've had issues with other devices (e.g., the odd laptop) that has required updating its network drivers. 3) While trying to connect last night, my network's SSID came up for just an instant on the Controller, then disappeared before I could complete the connection. 4) The Controller detects a couple of much weaker SSIDs in my neighborhood, so I know it's not blind. Where should I go from here? Suggestions? Re: [slim] Sc7?
Looking for a little advice. Currently I'm running the latest SS 6.5.x on Ubuntu 7.04. I want to upgrade to SC7. My thought is to do the following: 1) Completely uninstall SS 6.5 and remove the SS directories. 2) Upgrade Ubuntu to 7.10 in place. 3) Install the SC7 bits and any new plug-ins. I realize that wiping everything clean and installing the OS and Squeeze pieces is safer, but is there anything really wrong with the above? One reason I want to upgrade the OS in place is that there are a few settings and utilities (e.g., NX Server) that I'd rather not rebuild from scratch if I can avoid it. Time to check your hard disk with ScanDisk. Select My Computer from the Start menu, right-click on your disk (probably C: unless you have your music files on a separate volume), select Properties, go to the Tools tab, and then under Error Checking, click the Check Now button. Having said that, I want the best solution at reasonable cost, and generally speaking the Wharfedale 8.2's seem like a better value for my purposes than the AudioEngines, although the latter have much in the way of features to recommend them. With respect to other issues raised on the thread, I am attempting to determine how I'll attenuate the output signal of the SB3 (2.1 Vrms) to the monitors (0.775 Vrms input sensitivity). I don't know where in the path the volume control on the monitors operates (if it's before the amps then it is in essence a variable input voltage control; if between amps and drivers I think the SB3 output could clip/fry the amps). The otherwise excellent 8.2 Pro documentation does not address this question. And if the Cleanbox does eliminate any noise issues for this application, that would seem a useful addition. Re: [slim] Which mp3 player?
I do understand what you said about two music libraries, but I've decided that's the way to go after much experimentation. In my case, I got an 80GB iPod (only easily portable thing that could come close to accommodating most of my music collection in M4A format), did a batch transcoding job to copy all the FLACs I had to a mirrored M4A library, and now when I get a CD, I use REACT2 to simultaneously rip FLAC and M4A tracks. Why an iPod over a Creative, Cowon or other device? Major reason: I wanted to take my collection in the car and use my HU to control the music, and for better or worse Apple pretty much has that integration available in a way others do not. And in general the iPod accessories market is larger (and therefore more competitive) than what is available for other devices. Heartily agree with the other posters on using something other than lossless on a portable device for all the reasons stated. You might try isolating the problem by using a direct ethernet connection between the devices. If that works, go to wireless and borrow/try a different access point. [slim] Mac vs. Linux vs. Windows
I've tried some searches in the forums, but didn't find the thread I was looking for. I realize the difficulty of doing so on different hardware, but has anyone done comparative performance benchmark testing of a recent Slimserver version running on, say, a Mac Mini, a Linux box, and a Windows XP box, with the music files on external storage (e.g., NAS volume)? I've seen several reports of significant performance increases when moving from XP to Linux, but I'm very curious as to whether Mac OSX performance is closer to the former or the latter (or superior to both). On a related note, are Slimserver plug-ins all OS-agnostic, or will some only work on one OS platform or another? I've noticed that some are packaged as ZIP files, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Re: [slim] Is Slimserver sustainable as Open Source?
Going back to the first message in this thread (and others similar to it), I think the root issue underlying whatever frustration users/customers are feeling is not really open vs. closed source. Rather, it generally comes down to performance (i.e., perceived lack of) and/or bugs (usually real, rarely imagined). As many have mentioned, better development processes/control (incl. regression testing, etc.) would help address the latter. The former is more difficult, and perhaps a large portion of performance issues come down to the code base. There may be certain operations that PERL, PHP, etc., may never be able to perform as efficiently as C dialects or other compiled programming languages. I have no idea what's towards the top of Logitech/Slim's priority list, but I'm wondering whether they aren't stepping back to take a look at the whole server package, and figuring out whether some parts of it shouldn't be modularized and then written using a code base that will address sluggishness and other performance symptoms. Of course this wouldn't be easy, but it would probably make it easier to release a server-in-a-box product (if that's what they have in mind) that would not get savaged by reviewers testing with large and/or complex media libraries. -- Balthazar_B Balthazar_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7366 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32904 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It would likely take only a little bit of flash memory on the controller device (probably a better term than remote) to cache the SS DB, and would cut down considerably on the over-the-air transactions that would tend to make the control sluggish. The synching could be done on-demand or trickled as DB changes were being made on the backend. But the key element of a successful control device is not so much its processing power per se, but control interfaces that are optimized for media (in this regard, while the iPod is not perfect, it excels in its elegance and simplicity well beyond most of its competition). -- Balthazar_B Balthazar_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7366 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31324 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

For myself (and I realise I don't represent everyone) - it's the web interface which sold me on slim. Nor do I want to carry around the equivalent of a tablet PC to run my audio system (I should add that I also have a universal remote, the chief virtue of which is that it replaces a bunch of others reasonably well, although I don't much like its size). I'd rather have a smaller device with a context-sensitive UI brilliantly designed to the task, which in this case is navigating a variable number of songs, albums, playlists, categories, etc. Apple didn't invent the jog wheel -- I saw it on Sony VCRs over 20 years ago -- but they adapted it admirably (IMHO) to host navigation functions in a simple but effective way. Let's put it this way: if Apple had released the iPod with a web interface for navigation instead of the simple but brilliant wheel mechanism, it would have flopped in the marketplace (I suppose one could say the Newton was the original flop). SanDisk, Creative, et al. have pretty decent navigation mechanisms as well. A small device (as a remote should be) whose essential function is navigation really needs something like this, and IMHO that's one of the strongest points about the Sonos (despite that the remote could still stand improvement). Messing with a web interface compared with a device where hardware and firmware are well-matched will almost always be a poorer user experience. -- Balthazar_B Balthazar_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7366 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27824 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Siduhe: My main problem with web interfaces is that (even with Ajax) they tend to trade lowest-common-demoninator functionality in exchange for multiclient support. [slim] Yet Another Remote Idea
I'm one of those people who stuffs all the audio gear in a closet, out of sight. I use a universal remote supporting RF to control things. Now the idea of Slimserver (and Transporter) appeals to me a lot, but the execution of the Sonos system has some appeal, not least of all because of its clever remote. Now I've just read that the Chinese company that produces the Miniplayer (http://reviews.cnet.com/Meizu_Mini_Player_2GB_white/4505-6499_7-32034099-2.html?tag=nav) is rumored to be coming out soon with a player in the same form factor, but running a 522Mh chip and Windows CE as its OS (and a ridiculously low price). How much of a stretch would it be if Slim Devices were to contract with this mfr to add Wi-Fi and a nice fat client for controlling the Slim system. This would pretty much eliminate the dependency on line-of-sight control, and steal most of the thunder from Sonos. I realize that another potential solution involves leveraging Wi-Fi capable PDA/phone devices with embedded browsers, etc., but from what I can tell none of the solutions quite matches the elegance and navigability of the Sonos remote. If I go down the Slim path this -- specifically a WM5-compatible widget -- is the solution I'd need to use, I guess, but I'd pine for something better. Thoughts? Am I just grasping at straws? -- Balthazar_B Balthazar_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7366 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27156 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
