I have been using GiimeSomeTune recently as I can no longer get
PearLyrics or Clutter to work properly with new versions of iTunes.

It's pretty good but there are some minor irritations; for example,
PearLyrics could be pointed at a Playlist and just left to populate all
tracks. GimmeSomeTune, by contrast, seems to want to have each track
played which can be tiresome.

That said, it's pretty cheap, pretty reliable and does the core job
pretty well. 'Nuff said!

I'm running Leopard on a Mac Mini (PPC) which also houses iTunes and
Squeezecenter.

Hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay in responding - I'm running SC 7.3 in beta and 7.1

[slim] Squeezebox Controller Upgrade failed

2008-08-17 Thread Jungle

Help! I'm running two Squeezeboxes and using a Squeezebox controller.
The controller tells me that there is updated software available (under
advanced settings). The message given ends with the statement 'it may
take a few minutes to update to version?.'.

When I try to update, the controller obviously thinks about it but
eventually comes back with the message, 'Upgrade Failed' - saying
'there was a problem upgrading this remote. Please try again or contact
support'.

Repeated attempts still don't allow me to update. Can anyone point me
in the right direction or even point out where I'm being really dumb if
this is the case?

many thanks.

I'd also love to see some sort of 'Lazy search' assimilated into the

Look, if it's any consolation, most of us who are using AlienBBC
probably lost hair/sanity in the process - it can be a complicated
install. As for the multiple installation instructions, this is because
the installers found that different environments seemed to need
different configs, even on a common OS. My own OSX install notes were
done after I had struggled for several days - eventually getting over
the finish line with the help of others on this forum. If my
instructions caused you grief, my apologies and I'd be more than happy
if you improved them.

My advice: DO persist. Accept offers of help from posters here - they
tend to have a lot of experience. AlienBBC is wonderful when you get it
working but it is complex, probably because it requires other software
modules (mplayer etc) to work. As such, let people know what OS and
configuration you are running and then see how things go.

Although the Mini only came with 80GB, this has been OK for the short

latest version - and Pandora. Both fantastic.

Only gotcha I have experienced is problems connecting to SqueezeNetwork
but this is (I think) down to DNS issues on my Netgear router (DG834G).
Aside from that, I would really recommend this setup.

As for Windows interoperability, you can run SoftSqueeze on a PC and
access SlimServer if that's what you mean. As for moving files
around/sharing printers etc, this is all pretty straightforward in
OSX.

Hope this helps.

[slim] Re: Anyone running Slimserver on a Mac Mini?

2006-03-06 Thread Jungle

Thanks this is all sounding very promising. And with he new Intel
processor and built in wifi and Gigabit Ethernet, the Mac Mini is
sounding more and more it should come home and accompany my new
 plasma.

One inevitable thing to ask, with the new Front Row software and
remote, it can at least have a part time job of doing what the Slim is
 doing?

My Mac Mini happily runs SlimServer in the background and spends the
rest of its time running iTunes, email, web browsing, file print
stuff and anything else I want to throw at it. As with all macs, the
more RAM you throw at it, the happier it becomes. Mine has 512MB and
copes with pretty much anything except for when I want to
simultaneously watch a DVD, convert other video content for iTunes,
print my kids' homework, have my email client running and run about 10
Safari windows while keeping SlimServer and other stuff going on.

Not sure about the new Intel based Macs other than the fanboy sites
have been waxing lyrical about speed. You should do a quick search on
the forums here about running SlimServer on the Intel variants - I
*think* it now all runs fast but I do remember a thread when they first
came out.

Having looked through other posts, I have managed to get this issue
resolved. All it took was to manually enter IP details for my two SBs -
they seemed to need direct addresses for DNS servers rather than taking
the details from my netgear router.

Once I'd changed that, everything worked OK. Quite why this was
required, I can't say - there didn't seem to be a problem with address
resolution from any other device on the network - but at least I'm now
happily back on SqueezeNetwork.

This may be related to Squeenetwork's IP address changing, although if

Please try FW35 which will be in the next nightly.

Hi Neil

I was going to be facetious and suggest that you just take your iPod
(and external speakers of course) with you when you travel but I have
just worked out that if you get this sorted, I could access all your
music on my Squeezeboxes as well! Therefore I wish you all the best in
your endeavour and will be in touch via normal mail to see if I can
hook up.

[slim] Re: Slimserver Question re. device support

2005-12-28 Thread Jungle

Michaelwagner Wrote:
This is not one of the specifically supported hardware devices for the
Slimserver. However, *if* (and I couldn't figure it out from the docs)
it can browse over to a stream id like
 http://myslimserver:portnumber/stream.mp3
then it might work. A number of software players (winamp for one) work
 this way.

You might want to check out this review in Design Technica:
 http://reviews.designtechnica.com/review1538.html

I glanced quickly over the manuals. It seems that you really need a PC
to set it up. If you're an all-Mac household, that might be a real
 obstacle.

Then you need a TV to operate the thing, because it has no display of
 its own.

Perhaps someone else on the list will write and say they have one and
 know it accepts http streams.

 Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice - I did actually have an XP laptop which I used
to get the device set up. Sadly, the software for the device is so
badly written that I wasn't even able to get the device up and running
properly - the XP driver didn't load properly. A quick scoot round the
net shows that this is a fairly common problem and Linksys' technical
support is as useful as a chocolate teapot! After spending 3 hours this
morning trying to coax the device into life, I packed it all back in its
boax and will take it back to the retailer for a refund. Serves me right
for being a cheapskate I suppose! When I plugged by SB3 back in, it came
to life straight away and I was able to listen to music without any
problems. Must be a lesson there somewhere...

[slim] Slimserver Question re. device support

2005-12-27 Thread Jungle

Apologies if this is not the right forum for this question but I'm
trying to find out which other devices are supported by SlimServer.
Specifically, I'm looking at the Linksys WMA11B and hoping that this
can use Slimserver as they are ccurrently on sale in the UK at roughly
£30 a unit. I don't see these as a replacement for the Squeezeboxes - I
already have two units and expect to buy more in the near future - but I
like the idea of a really low cost unit which will do for casual
listening and will also stream photos.

My problem with the Linksys is that it seems only to work with Windows
and this house is strictly Mac only. As such, I need some form of
server software to stream music from my iTunes library to the WMA11B.

Any helpful advice gratefully received.

[slim] Re: Speaker suggestions...

2005-11-02 Thread Jungle

There seem to be several different issues when considering speakers. For
example, I can hook my SB2 up to a Naim pre/power amp setup powering
massive TDL transmission line speakers and get awesome sound. This
works for one room but not elsewhere in the house (for one thing, I
don't have deep enough pockets).

My compromise for my bedroom has been a JBL Creature II setup - an
active setup with two small speakers and a bizarre subwoofer. Sound is
more than acceptable - at least I get a decent bass here - and I have
avoided having to get an amp. UK cost for these was c. £50. Downside,
they remain powered up and have small LEDs on the underside just to let
you know they're on!

There are huge numbers of active speakers out there, ranging from the
(UK) £10-20 per pair units normally designed for computers through to
top end active units from manufacturers like PMC
(http://www.pmcloudspeaker.com/db1sa.html).

To address your specific question, I'm not aware of any of these units
with standby/power down but that doesn't mean they aren't out there.

Good luck with your search and please do report back if you find
something which does the job well.
