You could try disabling flac-mp3 and flac-wav to see if that forces it
to flac transcode.

The other thing to try is to enable info logging on player.source and
check the log. This should show what coder/transcoder SC is choosing
from convert.conf and give you an indication why it's not working as
expected.

If it stops the files from playing it proves it doesn't like your flac

To change the logging, go to settingsadvancedlogging and scroll down

Re: [slim] 96/24 Support for SqueezeBox 3

2008-12-02 Thread Patrick Dixon

I found some problems before I could get this to work (on Ubuntu).

With sox 14.0 the transcode line above doesn't work, but this does:-

flc flc transcode *
# FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}D:{RESAMPLE=-r %d}
[flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [sox] -t wav - -t flac
RESAMPLE$ -

I also had to edit /etc/squeezecenter/convert.conf because SC7 appears
to ignore /usr/share/squeezecenter/custom-convert.conf

I then had to replace /usr/share/squeezecenter/Bin/i386-linux/sox with
a link to /usr/bin/sox

I am still not 100% sure it's maintaining the 24 bits though ...

Question: Is there a gap in Logitech's web site?

- Good questions
- Not interested
- Boring
- Bad/stupid questions

The Transporter was designed by Slim Devices well before Logitech bought
the company. I doubt very much that Logitech bought Slim Devices
because of the Transporter, I think they were much more interested in
the SB3 technology, which is more in keeping with the mass market
appeal of Logitech's other products.

Logitech have subsequently designed the Duet and the Boom, both great
mass market appeal products, so I'd guess, if pushed, they'd agree that
the TP is 'unsual' in their product range, rather than there being a gap
where other 'high end' products might be.

PS you can do the whole reset thing from the remote with one finger:

[slim] Where have support staff gone re: controller issue questions?

2008-08-08 Thread Patrick Dixon

Milhouse;326973 Wrote:
However the apparent lack of interest in Controller/network bugs from
Slim Devices on the forums is quite worrying - perhaps it's the
influence of Logitech. I even added to a bug in bugzilla, which has
been ignored. One of the things that's happened is that the user base has grown
significantly and these forums are a lot busier as a result. The
people who have helped in the past are probably overwhelmed with the
number of users who are looking for networking help, and having
answered the same or similar questions many times in the past, it
wouldn't be surprising if their interest waned slightly. Rather than
comment on the lack of help here, I'd like to applaud those people who
have consistently helped others here time and time again. kdf, Fletch
and bpa are just three that spring to mind, but there are many others,
and many that support their various plugins and addons.

So if you want support, you should contact Logitech: if you want help,
you many find it here either by searching or asking. And if someone
helps you, howabout trying to help a couple of others here if you can?

If you can get someone else to verify your bug, and/or if you can
provide enough info for Logitech to reproduce it, it stands a better
chance of being addressed. In any event, getting it into bugzilla is
good, because someone else with the same issue can search it and add
their own comments.

OK, if I press and hold Play on a track selected through Browse -
Artist, it creates a MusicIP playlist ... but it doesn't make it the
active playlist. I then have to press + to add it to the end of the
current playlist (or press and hold + to add it next). However there
doesn't seem to be any way to replace the current playlist with the
MusicIP generated one. If I just press play on the first song in the
MusicIP playlist it plays the album that the song is taken from,
followed by the rest of the MusicIP playlist. I guess this is because
I have 'Play other songs in album or directory set'?

This is using the IR remote only.

Is this behaviour what other people see?

This combined with unexplained WiFi issues sent me back to 6.5.4 but
Squeezecenter has broken Softsqueeze completely. Net result is I will
probably never upgrade the software again which means I will never buy
any more devices as Duet is dependent on it. The current crop of
threads with scanning issues seems to vindicate this decision.

Brown nosers need not post telling me it works for them - I'm not
interested. I AM interested in why this bug report appears to be being
 completely ignored.
You can of course buy more SB3s as they are not dependent on SC7.

I'm sure if you look through all the bugs you'll find that there are
quite a few things listed - it's common practice for people/companies
to prioritise their approach to fixing things and maybe your particular
issue (although clearly important to you) doesn't rank as high in the
wider scheme. If you have a workaround (run standalone), then why not
just do that?

IME it is worth reporting bugs: they don't all get fixed, they don't
all get fixed instantly, but the ones that do clearly improve the
product for everybody else as well - brown-nosed or not.

[slim] Spam PMs

2008-04-04 Thread Patrick Dixon

Any chance the forum administrators could do something to prevent spam
by Private Message?

Maybe prevent people sending PMs until they have a minimum number of
forum posts - which is a common approach on other forums.

They come up very rarely and seem to fetch around £700. IIRC they have
been offered in the past here, on pfm and hi-fi wigwam.

In most cases, it's better to use the internal DAC rather than feeding
S/PDIF to an external DAC. It also usually more cost effective.

Re: [slim] The Play button

2008-02-17 Thread Patrick Dixon

JimC;270196 Wrote:

From my personal point-of-view, I'd prefer to see Play/Pause function
overloaded on a single button (because that how it's done on a huge
number of devices), use ADD to put music in the Now Playing list, and
have a Clear Now Playing list menu item. Of course, that will
confuse some people who would go to an album or artist and press PLAY
to play that music, instead of ADD to queue it up. You could say that
PLAY would also add to Now Playing, but what happens if music is
already playing? Does it pause or queue (or even both!)? It gets
 complicated, pretty quickly.
That would work pretty well - but rather than have a Clear Now Playing
function, you could have a Load function to mimic the good old days of
physical media. Either press and hold the Load button to get Add, or
the other way round. Playing a new 'CD' would be a two step Load and
Play operation.

The problem with using any of these interfaces for a while, is that you
get so used to how they work, you can't rationally evaluate the
ergonomics anymore. Exhibit 1 is of course the typewriter keyboard.

Re: [slim] Need shelf stereo to go with my Squeezebox. Recommendations?

2008-01-30 Thread Patrick Dixon

I suspect that requirements 1 3 are mutually exclusive, so I reckon
you'd be best concentrating your spend on the bits that will make most
difference to the sound quality. Therefore the Audioengines (I haven't
heard them) or similar sound like a good idea.

You can get CD by sticking in your computer, iPod access in a similar
fashion, and radio through the SB3 - so what more do you need?

They have a store down in Portsmouth (where I was for Christmas). I

a warehouse with a front desk. You go up and order what you want,

A NAS is actually a computer as indeed is the Sonus remote. I can
understand your point about not wanting to leave your laptop or desktop
on all the time, but it's possible to set-up the SB3s to run with an
off-the-shelf NAS (so long as it can run Slimserver), or to build a NAS
using Linux and standard components. The power of the SB3 is in the
flexibility and openness of the approach, but the downside is that that
can make it a little geeky to setup compared to an 'Apple-type'
approach. You don't have to learn Linux, but if you are prepared to
get your hands a little dirty, there are lots of solutions and helpful
people here.

Re: [slim] DIGITAL VOLUME CONTROL OUTPUT FIXED bug

2007-11-04 Thread Patrick Dixon

Disable volume adjustment only applies to Automatic Volume adjustment
which works from the replay gain tags on a track by track, or album by
album basis. Fixing the digital output level will only affect anything
if you are connecting to an external DAC using the electrical or optical
digital output. So I doubt you have a bug.

I don't think there's any way to set and lock the analogue volume
control, so the best approach is to remove remote privileges from any
of your friends/family who abuse them ;-)

Re: [slim] Delays from Amazon UK

2007-06-03 Thread Patrick Dixon

There was a long period (at least 4 weeks) when the UK importer couldn't
get any SB3s and didn't seem to know what was going on. A email I sent
to Slim took over two weeks to even get a reply, and didn't provide any
information other than what JimC says above (ie there shouldn't be a
problem - even though there obviously was!).

I suspect a lot of UK suppliers have simply given up placing orders
from SB3s and are steering customers to other more readily available
products.

Shame really.

Yes, we've done some and we also make the SB+.

I think the biggest issues are:-

a) networking - issues with routers, wireless, PC updates etc. Most
ordinary people struggle with just keeping their PC and broadband
connection working.

b) ripping and tagging new music

c) iPod integration

People think SPDIF has to processed immediately to the DAC as it
arrives. It doesn't. That how DTS, AC3, work. SPDIF is just a
transmission medium and it doesn't have to directly drive your DAC
clock. It can be buffered and often is and the SPDIF is just a
transmission medium and as long as like you said they arrive in order
with correct values then it's the consuming device that should reclock
it and be responsible for timing of it. And that's how most equipment
is these days. There is no need to make the bits any squarer if they
 are already good enough.
The DAC clock has to lock (in some manner) to the SPDIF clock. Because
the input and output clocks are nominally (but not exactly) the same as
each other, you can't just buffer the data and have it take care of
itself.

Have a go at designing and building yourself a DAC, and you will start
to appreciate the issues involved. It's really not quite as
straightforward as you seem to think it is!

The SB1 is 'b' rather than 'g' wireless networking - so 10Mb/s rather
than 100Mb/s.

The SB1 has a much smaller buffer than the SB2/3, so it's more exposed
to network throughput problems.

Also the SB1 originally came with a different screen, which was later
updated to the same one as is now used in the SB2/3.

2006-12-30 Thread Patrick Dixon

1) You need a faster server if you want better performance.
2) It will work better without SoftSqueeze
3) If it's a dedicated server, you could try a headless linux without
any GUI running, Clarkconnect works really well for me.
4) On the remote or Web UI, select Browse, then Music Folders and you
will see a directory type listing of all your music. Slimserver will
show you this even if it hasn't scanned it into it's library. As you
navigate down to track level, you can play music directly, and SS will
add the tracks to its library. So the quickest way to add a new CD, is
to navigate down to the tracks using Music Folder.

I suspect that for some reason slimserver can't play the track you ask

first one it can open, without updating what it thinks it's current
playing.

OK, first I think you need to disconnect the Speedtouch modem and
connect the Netgear directly to the ADSL conector on the phone line
filter in its place. As you have already done, the PC should be
connected to the computer using the ethernet cable (anyone of the 4
ports will do). The Speedtouch modem should be placed in the bin :-)

Then in the Netgear setup ensure you have:

In Basic Settings:
Encapsulation PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
Login)Whatever Virgin have given you
Password ) (can you get find this in the Speedtouch settings?)
IP Address )automatic
DNS } ditto

In ADSL Settings:
Multiplexing Method VC BASED
VPI 0
VCI 38

WAN Setup:

Connect Automatically, as Required (ticked)

And hopefully that will get you going.

[slim] Re: Noise with SB and Naim

2006-12-14 Thread Patrick Dixon

You're obviously not in the UK.

The Nait should be grounded through the mains lead - the ground is
connected to the metal chassis and provides a safety earth in the event
of an internal fault making the metalwork live. Maybe if you're on 110V
this isn't considered necessary ...

If you can, I would experiment by making an earth connection between
the 0V pins on one of the Nait's input DINs, and mains earth. That
references the signal earth to mains earth for the system, and is the
way Naim systems are generally wired (the connection is made inside a
Naim CDP).

My guess is that it's your Creek DAC's clock freewheeling. With 6.5
firmware the SB3 doesn't put out an SPDIF signal until it powers on,
and it turns it off again when it's switched off. IIRC this was a
feature request so that DACs with multiple digital inputs can correctly
autosense.

Presumably once the Creek has locked on to something after it's first
powered up, it's then OK - so the solution is just not to turn it off!
