settings are in my working one, to my non-working one, and that I can
use UDAP to check this out. However, before I do this, I wanted to see

If you press and hold the button until it starts flashing, then release,
you should be able to discover with Net-UDAP. Don't press and hold too
long or you'll do a factory reset which would lose your settings.

for me i to edit the configuration again and again via udap_shell. Is it

No, you can't do that.

However, two things that might help.

1. Press and hold the button until the light flashes red slowly, and
release it before it begins flashing red quickly. This puts the SBR in
config mode and enables Net-UDAP to discover it and retrieve the current
settings.

2. udap_shell should have a command history - press cursor up to scroll
back through previous commands. Perhaps this doesn't work on Windows?

If you do a factory reset again, then try a discovery using Net-UDAP, it

Yes, you're missing something.

The signal is transmitted over an analogue medium and the signal timing

receiver.

If the timing information can not be re-created accurately it can cause
differences in sound between different digital sources, and even

I'm not sure how to add WEP key using your udap_shell_1_0_0.exe.
 On Net-UDAP site:
 http://projects.robinbowes.com/Net-UDAP/trac#January212009
 I can read:
I just committed a change that switches to hex entry for WEP keys.
This simply means that instead of entering a hex key like this: abcd,
you should now enter it like this: 61626364.

How to add WEP key using this exe (hex or plain text)?

Hi, I have the same issue. My WEP key is in HEX, which leads to a
yellow button. The SBR does work over wired, it has the latest firmware
 downloaded.

But how should I convert my 10digit HEX key to ASCII?

I haven't found a reference that translates above abcd into
61626364, maybe this is just an example.

As Siduhe has pointed out, there are several on-line tools that can
convert from ascii to hex and vice versa.

What you need to do is:

1. Take your hex key, e.g. '61626364' and convert it to ascii. This will
result in something like 'abcd'
2. Use the resulting ascii string to set the WEP key

You will run into problems if you have used hex results in non-printable
ascii characters. You could get round that by choosing a nice ascii
password, converting to hex, storing the WEP key in your WAP, then using
the original ascii to set the WEP key on your SBR.

Of course, the best way to fix this would be to upgrade to the latest
version of Net-UDAP which accepts WEP key entry in hex.

 Hi Peter,

I got your UI to work, but am not sure how to change parameters. I
assumed set then the parameter name and then the value, but that
wasn't it. Could you give us less technical folks a hint about how to
 change or set parameters.

Howard,

There's a guide here:

http://projects.robinbowes.com/Net-UDAP/trac/wiki/GettingStarted

In a nutshell, you're right; setting/changing parameters is done, e.g.,
like this:

UDAP discover
UDAP list
  #MAC AddressType Status
== = == ===
  1 00:04:20:16:05:8f squeezebox init
UDAP configure 1
UDAP [1] (squeezebox 16058f) set server_address=192.168.1.50
UDAP [1] (squeezebox 16058f) save_data

Also, it appears you have to reset the device to default in order to
get in to it. If someone wanted to change one parameter is it possible
for you to make is so we could discover a specific MAC address or ip?

You don't have to reset the device - just put it in init mode, i.e.
slow-blinking red LED.

Thanks to you and Robin for all the work. My only comment is the folks
that really need this (first time users of the SBR) probably won't be
able to use the tool unless you come up with a much easier UI.

I initially started work on a SC plugin that does this - I ought to
re-visit it and get it finished. Spare time is the issue...

The SBR is sold separately for users who require 1 receiver with just

Hi all,

Net::UDAP is a Perl module to configure the SqueezeBox Receiver (SBR)

I've also fixed the registration system on the website so it is now

Databases like that are a bit of a chicken and egg problem. How do you
expect to populate it? In order for it to be at all useful, you'll
need to convince developers of tagging and/or ripping software to
integrate with it. That's going to be a tall order without many
thousands of CD entries just to start.

Fair point, and one I'm thinking about. I'm not too worried at this stage.

GENRE data is going to be interesting. I suspect that if you solicit
data from the public, that it's going to be all over the board for any
given work. I think this is why FreeDB often returns no GENRE, and
very often no YEAR when ripping a disc.

I agree - genre data is problematic. However, the user will be able to
choose whether or not to use any supplied data, i.e. they will be able
to ignore the Genre information.

 No CONDUCTOR field?

See later...

No fields for soloists? I would think distinguishing between
BAND/ORCHESTRA/ENSEMBLE and individual performers would be valuable,
instead of lumping them all into the ARTIST field.

See later...

You'll need an ARTISTSORT field. In fact, you need to have a sort
field for any field that potentially contains a proper name, so a
CONDUCTORSORT if you have a CONDUCTOR field.

The key point I was trying to make (and failed, it would seem) is that
the data will *not* be tied to the tags.

I fully intend to have separate data for all contributors (BAND,
ORCHESTRA, CONDUCTOR, etc. etc.) The user will then be able to choose
how that data is written to their tags. So, they might choose to have
separate ARTIST tags, or one, concatenated ARTIST tag.

Using sebp's example:

I'd prefer seeing something like conductor='Carlos Kleiber' and
ensemble='Wiener Philharmoniker' in the database, and a way to ask the
system to forge the ARTIST tag with these (say
ARTIST='%ENSEMBLE%;%CONDUCTOR%', or maybe
ARTIST='%CONDUCTORSORT%;%ENSEMBLE%' if you prefer).

I envisage just this functionality. The DB will store conductor='Carlos
Kleiber' and ensemble='Wiener Philharmoniker' and the user will be able
to choose whether to store those tags in their files, or concatenated
them in the ARTIST tag, or both.

Another of sebp's comments:

say some movement is lengthy, and for some reason it's been splitted on
two or more tracks on one album, but left as one on another. It would
not work.

That's not going to happen in practise; if it does, it will be
relatively uncommon. The reverse may happen (two or movements inside one
track). That eventuality is relatively easy to deal with (e.g.
concatenate both movement descriptions in the TITLE tag).

You simply:

However, it seems that if SBR detects a wired network connection when it

Bugs are prioritised and dealt with accordingly. I do not work for SD

Did you try a later build - 7.0.2 or even the latest from 7.1 branch?

configured, it cannot connect to any wireless network (the SBC sets up
an AdHoc wireless network to connect wirelessly to the SBR) so you won't
be able to connect to it wirelessly from a PC.

Even when configured, the UDAP protocol is UDP-based so the UDAP source

It is possible that it might work across a wireless network, i.e. PC +
SBR connected to the same wireless network, but I've not tested that and

When I get round to releasing it officially, I will write some
instructions which will begin something like:

Plug SBR into same switch/router as PC

One way to do this would be to run multiple instances of SC. If you want

Alternatively, you could run SC on separate machines with the libraries

but smc2911 i will try and calculate just how bad the quality of your
squeezebox playback has been the last few years.

 using:

 http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/voltageloudness.html

To get a doubling of loudness, it is important to note that an
increase of 10dB is necessary. And to reproduce that volume through
our loudspeakers, note that we require ten times more power from the
amplifier, which is voltage increase of 3.16 times.

If your stereo volume is set to a point where at squeezebox music
keeps the party ticking... now if in normal listening it is say half
 as loud...

I'm sorry, but what has that got to do with anything?

then i think you are going to drop from 16 bit resolution to one
third of that. but anyone can correct me if they like... its not
 really my area

Actually, the Squeezebox uses 24-bit processing. So you can drop 8 bits
without losing any resolution.

either way at least i now have one

LOGITECH PLEASE GET RID OF THE VOLUME BUTTON - YOU MESSED ME UP FOR
YEARS AND I DIDN'T EVENT KNOW IT UNTIL NOW

Oh dear oh dear.

You seem to be rather confused about this issue.

Let's put aside the fact that you can just set the Squeezebox to maximum
volume to get the same effect as a fixed output (really, you can, the
volume control is done digitally, the analogue out is fixed). Just how
exactly do you think Logitech has messed you up for years?

then one third of that will be the level for normal listening...

imagine the line in had an analogue to digital convertor on it...
then one third of the resolution would be lost.

CD audio is (generally) 16-bit. The Squeezebox uses 24-bit processing.
This is means that the volume can be reduced by a whole 8 bits without
losing any resolution.

Here's an example using 4-bits / 8 bits:

Original 4-bit audio:
Processed as 8-bit audio:
Half the volume : 0000
Half the volume : 0000
Half the volume : 0000
Half the volume :

Notice, we've now reduced the volume significantly and have still not
lost any resolution.

ok it does not have a a a/d... instead it uses analouge gain... but
the noise and resolution must come into it...

No, it uses digital gain. The analogue gain is fixed (for best S/N ratio).

I'll say it again - if you want fixed (maximum) output from the SB just
turn up the volume to full and forget about it. You are not losing anything.

Let's look at your example another way:

are you understanding what i am saying... if 6v is the max level that
when it comes out of his hifi makes a party kick...

then one third of that will be the level for normal listening...

imagine the line in had an analogue to digital convertor on it...
then one third of the resolution would be lost.

So, imagine your SB output is set to maximum, and your amplifier volume
control is set to whatever level required to make a party kick.

For normal listening (one third of that) simply turn the amplifier
volume down.

Easy.

Yes, but still poorly edited. A 20 second look of that single page shows
there still 3 references to artwork thumb files which should be
 deleted.

And really, am I the one who should be reviewing this? Is this
representative of QA there at Logitech corporation?

 Good question.

Jim,

I find your ceaseless cynicism and snide comments rather offensive.

Please be nice.

Robin's plug-in, which requires SqueezeCenter and a wired connection to

Perhaps now is as good a time as any to release a little more
information about what I'm working on...

I am writing a perl module that can be used to configure one or more
SBRs. This requires a wired connection to the SBR and (obviously!) perl.
There will be a CLI which can be used to do the configuration outside of SC.

Separate to this, there will be a SC plugin that uses the module to do
SBR configuration from the web interface.

I hope to have a beta-release available within the next week or two.

Some people have no trust in this community. Is your plugin going to
include setting up a wireless WPA key so that we can configure an SBR
over ethernet and then continue using it over Wifi? I trust it will, but
perhaps you'd better confirm that to the doubtful part of the community ;)

My plugin will require a wired connection to the SBR for configuration.
It will allow wireless to be setup so the SBR can be used wirelessly
after configuration.

Hope that clarifies things.

Mike - when Robin does get this plugin written, I hope Logitech does
something very nice for him. I'll buy one, that's for sure.

Also, why doesn't the old remote for the Squeezebox not work with the
 SBR?

We're very familiar with Robin. He's one of our best community guys.

Well, I'm flattered, but I'm sure all the other community guys would
have something to say about that.

Robin's developing a plug-in to solve that. The SB Receiver will get an
IP address thru DHCP automatically on the Ethernet port (didn't know
that till today) so his plug-in will be able to find and configure the
receivers without too much trouble. The hard part for Robin is in
 environments where DHCP isn't used.

Robin - Will this plugin will be part of the Slimserver software? Or
 firmware on the SBR?

The current situation is that it will be an unsupported (by Logitech),
3rd party plugin.
