Anyone know why they didn't use MP3? It annoys me that they have gone from the horrible Real company and format to the pretty horrible Microsoft format. MC The Inquirer posted an article today regarding the BBC and MS striking new techology deals. http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35282 Article also mentions the Beebs move over to supporting WMA - which is welcome news :-) According to a press release from Sonos, the blokes over at the Beeb have decided to jump ship for relying on Realplayer for web content, and have switched over entirely to the Windows-friendly WMA format. I'm CC'ed to a bug about the remote jumping through menu items. There are some settings in this bug report that I want. But I can't find the bug by searching bugs.slimdevices. A search on say, remote jump gives me zillions of bugs and I still can't find the one I want in the returns. I just know I'm being really stupid but is there a way to see all the bugs I'm cc'ed on? [slim] Flac comment tag. Excess text causing Slimserver to run badly?
I have run my SlimServer Squeezebox set up on lots of different Windows XP based machines using different wireless and wired networks. I have always been very less than please with the performance of SlimServer, finding that when listing albums artists, genres etc there are constant freezes and I can make a sandwich and eat it sometimes before the Squeezebox will display the list. I use the remote and have a library of about 800 flac albums. Recently I have been trying to get Linux set up on a small laptop to see if this improved performance at all.. So far I've got through three distros, all of which I've found unusable. Whilst doing this I have been racking my brains about what could be different about my set up, as other Windows XP users report that SlimServer runs fine for them. There is only one unusual thing I do that I can think of. I put reviews and bio's of the group/album into the Flac comment tag (this can be a lot of text). Is it possible that this could somehow cause SlimServer to react very slowly? BTW. If anyone can recommend a Linux/Unix distro that will run very well on a 500khz, 512mRAM Pentium laptop, but that includes a (light?) gui front end (as I do not have the time to get to grips with the CLI) I'd a appreciate it. I use FreeBSD (http://freebsd.org). Unix, not Linux but runs very well on small machines. My Slimserver is running on my mail/web/webDAV server which is a 500Mhz box. A friend of mine is running Slimserver on FreeBSD on a 100MHz 64Mb box with no issues. I don't bother with GUI's on these things though... they consume more ram than the Slimserver app :) I tried FreeBSD as I had been recommended it for underpowered machines, but ended up with a command prompt and not enough time to work out how to use it. I now have PCBSD, which is supposed to be simple to install and leaves you with a gui (hooray!). I intend to use the gui to set up the machine, set up Slimserver, then turn off the gui, put the laptop in a drawer and and never touch it again. Ha ha ha. After a period of research and experimentation, I settled on EAC (for ripping and tagging, including retrieving tag data from freedb) and Mp3tag (for massaging/correcting tags and, occasionally, file names). Notwithstanding the time spent learning some of the ins and outs of EAC and configuring it (roughly like in the hydrogenaudio forum link a couple of posts above in this thread), the combination of these two pieces of software has been meeting my needs well. I'd categorize EAC as technically impressive, and Mp3tag as simply a pleasure from the first moment. RE: [slim] Is there any software version that will actually work for me?
I have a win XP PC, not the fastest at 1gig Anthlon, and 1gig RAM, but hey, it works perfectly with hardcore photo editing software and massive audio software, just not slimserver. I have a faster Windows XP machine (1.5mghz P4, 1gb RAM) and still get very frustrated by the same problems you have (I have almost 800 albums held in flac format). For me the 6*** SlimServer version is even slower than the 5.4.1 version. Listing music is frustratingly slow (although, oddly, sometimes it's not!) and using the remote has become virtually impossible (takes ages to do anything and the music stops playing whilst it drags itself to perform any commands). I love my Squeezebox but I'm definitely not very in love with Slimserver. My feeling is that it does not work very well on Windows, although other XP users state that it works fine for them which leaves me quite stumped, and still (after almost a year) unable to be satisfied by the performance of my Squeezebox/Slimserver combination. I've just ordered a 3.2mghz PC and am hoping this sorts out my problems and that Slimserver, for the first time since I have been running it, works as I expect it to. the platinum case. The finish (to me) is a bit flat (it looks too much like a plastic box painted flat silver, which is what it is I suppose) and it seems to emphasise the 'radio alarm' look of the housing. Looks like I made the right decision then. I got the black one as I had a suspicion that the platinum might make the SB look even more like an early eighties radio alarm. On the other hand my black case did degrade quickly with the coating flaking off in bits. I suspect I may end up swapping the SB1 and SB2 boxes over. Are there any differences internally to prevent me from doing this? On my original SB I had to cut the plastic casing away from the digital out (coax) socket so my cable could slide far enough onto the socket to make secure connection. I was relieved to see that on the SB2 the digital out coax socket stuck much further out of the casing, enabling the cable connector to fit correctly without having to butcher the case. I'm sure there would be a market for a slightly more expensive model with a classier housing, but I appreciate that small companies are limited in what their design teams can take on. Yes. I too would very much like a case that fitted in with the look of my Naim gear a little more. I've been very impressed with a few of the DIY jobs detailed on this list/forum. Set-up was painless and easy. My wasn't painless but I succeeded in the end (with help from KDF and Viddur, all hail them), even though it meant loosing my original installation of AlienBBC :-( The sound is definitely better, more punch it seems to me (infact I may stop using my Perpetual Technologies DAC as I can't immediately tell the difference in sound quality), the display is better, the news screen saver is great (although I would like to be able to click to read the full article, but minor concern really) and so far I have not noticed any drop outs (even when using BitTorrent, the microwave or the wireless phone). I've yet to be convinced that SS 6.*** is any better than 5.4.1 though, as using the remote to browse music seems to stall the audio (which didn't happen with 5.4.1) and I can't really see any improvement in speed of use (or speed of scanning) so far (but I guess it's early days?). RE: [slim] Re: A better remote?
My server is a P4 with 640MB, with a 40GB OS drive and two 200GB music drives. The web interface was snappy when I had only a few dozen albums, but with 330, it's downright sluggish. For example, displaying the artists list generally takes 5-10 seconds. I'm not looking forward to when I have all 1300 albums ripped to the system! My main server is a 1.5ghz P4 with 1mb or RAM, and I have another another on a 2.3ghz, 0.5mbRAM laptop, both running XP Pro SP2. I have about 650 albums held in flac format on a 300gb Maxtor One Touch (USB 2). I stream PCM to a Squeezebox 1 wirelessly. I find the web interface exasperatingly slow (not infrequently I get quite annoyed waiting for it too list items and find myself cursing the thing). About two weks ago I upgraded from SS 5.4.1 to the 6*** release listed on the SlimDevices home page but found that there was no performance improvement and that whenever I used the remote (my favoured method for controlling my Squeezebox) to list the music the audio would stall for seconds at a time (sometimes over 10!)and the bottons became unresponsive. I reverted back to 5.4.1 as the behaviour of the Remote is better (but certainly not perfect... it is still nowhere near as responsive to button presses as I would like and listing music still takes far too long). I'd hate to think what it would be like if I had 1300 albums (i.e. twice as many as current)! As I've stated before, I'd be very happy to pay for software that worked much better in Windows (perhaps written in C++, but definitely not Java, Perl or VB), with perhaps less functionality, as long as it was fast, responsive, stable and immediate to use. I tend to use Foobar2000 as my benchmark for this (someone is now going to tell me this is designed in VB!). For me this is much more of a priority than a better remote. I use my Squeezebox much less than I would otherwise because of the frustrating performance of SlimServer on my machines. Sorry to subvert the thread. I wouldn't be surprised if Unix performed better than Windows here.. it does with every thing else ;-). This is my suspicion too. Perhaps SlimServer ought to be listed as cross platform if using less than 300 albums (or 200?) in flac format. Above 300 flac albums and you need Linux to run it acceptably. As I do not want to run Linux (which would also mean having one PC dedicated solely to Slimserver, and a learning curve I do not have the time for) I think Windows optimised software for the Squeezebox is crucial for owners of large libraries. My main computers are a floor above this at the other end of the house. I have just run out of hard disk space on my two PCS. I already have hard drives stacked up in them, sitting on top of each other. I need more disk space. I was just about to buy two Maxtor 300gb USB 2 external hard drives for a grand total of about 320 UK pounds.. but I'm realising I may be in this rented house for longer than I originally thought... so I want to find out if there is any way I can sort things out so I can stream PCM to my Squeezebox. I'm beginning to think that maybe my best solution may be some sort of box that will hold lots of hard drives, make no noise at all... and that allows me to run Slimserver on it so I can stick it next to the adsl hub in the lounge. I've also found that when I upgrade my Slimserver to a new version the service reverts back to running under a non-privileged account. This is very annoying. It may have been fixed though, but If so I've not seen anything about it. RE: [slim] More flac playback over wireless data
file server, slimserver and Squeezebox are all independantly and wirelessly connected to my adsl/router/firewall/hub. OUCH!!! this isn't going to work. If your slimserver is mounting its music folder from another (also wireless) machine, this means your data is hitting the airwaves a total of FOUR times ie 6 Mbps total bandwidth usage! file server - access point - slim server - access point - squeezebox You need to get those computers on ethernet with the access point. Then the only traffic on wireless is: access point - squeezebox Thanks Sean. I am aware of that, but I currently live in listed building (called The Hobbits Rest) which I do not own. The only phone point is in the lounge (very near the Squeezebox) so I am a bit stuck. However, I am actually surprised at how infrequent the drop outs are with this set up. For now I have gone back to MP3s and radio (which appear to work fine). I'll leave the flacs till I buy a house high enough for me to stand up in (hopefully before I develop a permananent stoop).
