To answer the OP, yes, the Transporter is always "on", and uses a few

that's somewhat expected.

That's a lot of faith in Logitech management. I bought a harmony remote
on the premise that I could manually tweak config files, and it had a
good, if windows-based UI for configuration. Then they made this
completely shit wizard-based abomination that was nearly force-upgraded
upon me. I still regret buying into the harmony remotes, but the
behavior of the company has convinced me they can't get anything besides
mice done correctly. And even those have issuse, like my wireless mouse
at work still can't correctly report the battery status of a NiMh

How about an Intel NUC PC.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856102093

You can either use an M.2 form factor SSD, or a 2.5 HDD. Or both.

Install Ubuntu, or VortexBox.

You could go with a basic box, or a higher power version and install
something like Plex or XBMC to host video streaming content as well.

If you're just looking to replace the board, it's much harder to deal

Basically it sounds like the only thing worth saving (besides case and

Since wiki.slimdevices.com is mediawiki, it should be easy enough to
dump the contents and move it over to wikia. This seems to be the most
reasonable way to for the information and start a community maintained
version.

It would be nice if we could get Logitech to release what's left of the
squeezebox system to the community. Maybe they'd be willing to give up
the slimdevices.com domain to the community.

Yup, a squeezebox touch will do this exactly. The Squeezebox is a
client+server system. Generally you install Squeezebox Server software
(free download even before you buy it) on your laptop or a desktop PC
and it provides the streaming source to the Touch connected to your
stereo.

If you install the server software on another PC from your laptop you
can still control it using the web interface that is part of the

It's possible the TP's output is too much for your Krell. Personally I
keep mine at 90% in order for tracks with replay gain +dB to be boosted
a bit. (Volume -2dB = -5dB Base volume + 3dB replaygain boost)

I think that's how the squeezeboxes work out the math for gain
adjustments.

Re: [slim] is there a way to push audio to the squeezebox?

2010-10-13 Thread SuperQ

The squeeezbox plays music as directed by squeezebox server. It's free
to download and try before you buy. I suggest you give it a try to see
how it works.

There is no direct way for the squeezebox to play an audio input. It
was simply not designed for this. You can however use software like
shoutcast or VLC to create local audio streams. Or you can use things
like this plugin:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/WaveInput_plugin

A lot of people want to stream terrestrial radio over the squeezebox,
but almost all radio stations these days online streams that are far
superior to their radio stations.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 1

2010-08-13 Thread SuperQ

Hrm, I thought it was on the wiki here:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Hardware_comparison

but it seems like the list of native formats is missing.

As far as I know, the SB1 only supports MP3 and WAV as native formats
so FLAC will have to be transcoded. This might be an issue if you want
to stream via wifi. Over ethernet it should not be a problem

Re: [slim] Cat-3 Cables

2010-04-27 Thread SuperQ

I have had situations where we had to run networking over cat3 due to
very old buildings. Most modern 100mbps PHYs are good enough that it
should work reasonably well. Gigabit on the other hand is not going to
work well. It might get a link but you will get mostly packet loss.
You will get some packet loss, but nothing TCP can't deal with, and it
won't be an issue for the squeezebox.

Actually, there has been some very good speedups and optimization in the
last few server releases.

The scanner is now written in C and is much faster.

SoX is now used for transcoding and does a very good job.

Some of performance feel is different these days because UI
functionality has been moved from entirely server based to AJAX calls.
This makes the client browser more of a bottleneck that some people see
as slowness

802.11n is a superset of 802.11g. They are the same except 11n works
on 5.8ghz and can bond several channels at once. Unlike 11g vs 11b,
there is no backwards compatibility or speed problems mixing 11g and
11n

Unfortunately, product marketing doesn't make this clear. This is to
convince you to buy new stuff.

Re: [slim] Duet receiver/boom as wireless bridge

The Duet receiver acts as a hidden wifi ad-hoc bridge when configured to
allow the controller. However I don't know what the WEP key is. I
don't know if it's randomly generated or documented somewhere.

Personally I don't suggest using this mode since WEP is very insecure.
You are much better off using a wifi router with WPA2 from a security
perspective. You can also get much better range and reliability because
most 802.11n (2.4ghz) wifi routers support MIMO which helps with
interference.

Speaking of, how many kwh are people using for their homes, what % of
this goes to running music equipment.

Me and my SO use about 250kwh/month. The TP is about 2.6kwh/month
(1%).

My primary PC which I use for working from home, running squeezecenter,
etc uses about 80kwh/month (30%), but I need to re-measure this since I
did a few changes to it.

My fridge in my last apartment used about 60kwh/month (25%).

I need to go around and audit the power usage of my other stuff. I
suspect a large chunk of the power in my new apartment is lighting.
There are a number of halogen tube lights that are built-in to the walls
that I can't replace with CFL or other efficient lighting.

Re: [slim] How many of you still slide your Boom back into it's bagwhen you're done using it?

2009-08-22 Thread SuperQ

Done using it? That's never a term that applies to my Boom. ;)

My booms sits on my bedside table. Clock, music player, alarm.

The bag does come in handy as a protector when I want to demo the Boom
for friends or when I moved apartments a few months ago.

You need to do a rescan for squeezecenter to discover the images. It

Yea, the computer audiophile site. That thread made me drop it from my

Of course there is no difference between USB cables besides the RF
leaking/shielding you're talking about. Several people (including
myself) brought up the actual USB protocol specifications to prove it.
The audiophiles on the site dismissed what we said and I just decided
it was better to ignore them.

Re: [slim] Poor Quality Internet

2009-08-01 Thread SuperQ

Hrm, in theory you should be able to maintain a radio stream on that
slow of a connection. However there are a lot of factors upstream at
the ISP they're connected to that are involved. There could be line
problems with the DSL equipment.

Here's a true story. A friend of mine bought a coffee shop. After a
while, he realized that the internet access on their DSL line was
absurdly slow. I offered to help debug it for him since the ISP wasn't
being helpful. I followed the wiring all over the building trying to
figure out what was connected where. As I was tracing the phone line
source for the DSL I discovered the previous owner had installed DSL
line filters on the phone lines, including the DSL line. I looked at
the signal levels being received and was supprised they had working DSL
at all. After removing the filter and re-wiring the network things were
great.

Re: [slim] 24/96 with SB classic?

2009-07-14 Thread SuperQ

The current version of SqueezeCenter uses automatic down-sampling on the
server to allow playback of higher bitrate files. The work is done by a
program called SoX. SoX's algorithms for doing this are very high
quality.

That's pretty much a myth with the squeezebox. The squeezebox has to

Re: [slim] All hail the Squeezebox (Classic, at least)...

2009-07-12 Thread SuperQ

Yea, I had a party a couple weeks ago. I had been really lazy about
getting my network setup properly so I had been running my squeezeboxes
off of squeezenetwork. Of course this made it a huge pain to play my
own music, and of course sync didn't work at all.

I finally got my network setup correctly now and it's so nice to be
able to sync my living room's player with the boom in my office.

Re: [slim] how to best get audio into my kitchen

2009-05-31 Thread SuperQ

The first thing I would do is install squeezecenter. It's free so you
can try it out before you buy any squeezebox stuff.

Just to give you my story: A friend let me try out his squeezebox 1,
and I ended up ordering a squeezebox 2 because squeezecenter was great,
and it worked well to stream audio so that my girlfriend could use it no
problem.

Now I have 2 booms, a transporter (girlfriend loves it), and the old
squeezebox 2 streams tunes to the garage when we're working on tinkering
projects.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox - My experience

2009-05-19 Thread SuperQ

Great post, thanks for the info. I think your biggest problem
originally was wireless. Even if your signal looks good, it could be
getting packet drop due to interference from other stuff. Also
running squeezecenter on the laptop was the source of a lot of problems.
Your setup had to copy the same music file over wifi 3 times just to
get to one squeezebox.

Now that you have it on the NAS box which is ethernet wired, you only
have to send the music once to the squeezebox.
