Re: [slim] [Announce] iPeng 7, the iOS 7 Squeezebox App for iPhone and iPad
Hi Many thanks for this update to iPeng. I really like the new look and feel and the new features. In particular I have been hoping for the display of multiple artists for a long time, so really pleased to see this added feature. However (there is always a but isn't there...) as well as multiple artists, the now playing details at the top of the screen now show multiple artists, album artist (where different from the artist) and also any information in the composer field too. I am sure that preferences amongst users will vary, but I would much prefer just the artist field(s) to be shown. Is this possible? Keep up the good work and many thanks again! Re: [slim] [Announce] iPeng 7, the iOS 7 Squeezebox App for iPhone and iPad
Also, if I may add just a couple of other observations on the listing of multiple artists... Firstly this only seems to show up in the now playing screen and the now playing info at the top of the main screen. When browsing albums or artists, tracks with multiple artists show just one of the artists. Also in the playlist, just one artist is shown until that particular track is playing and then it changes to show all artists (and also the album artist and composer details as noted in my post above). Re: [slim] SqueezeBox UK stockists
Radio is being advertised by Currys at the moment, but haven't seen it in store. Currys and PC World have stocked the Boom and Classic in the past, but don't ask for support. John Lewis also stocks them - probably better service. I would also recommend ripcaster.co.uk. They have excellent customer service (I have had problems with power supplies for Audioengine speakers and they have sorted it out brilliantly). Also check amazon - every now and then they do some great deals - I picked up a couple of Booms earlier this year for £129 each... now a lot more expensive. Overall, this is still a pretty specialist bit of kit and I am not sure retail stores are really ready for it yet. Re: [slim] Smart Replay Gain where only one adjustment tag
I agree entirely with the sentiments of Teus and Gary above. When I sit down to listen to a whole album/symphony etc I want the quiet songs/movements to be quiet and the loud songs/movements to be loud (at least relatively - I of course use my amplifier's volume control to set the overall level depending on whether I want to wake up the neighbours or not!) This is why at the moment I have to manually switch off SC's Smart Gain when I want to listen to an album/symphony etc. This is of course equivalent to having Album gain set to zero. My suggested change was simply for Smart Gain to do this for me automatically. I can live with using a different volume on my amp for 'loud' albums and 'quiet' albums - so don't really need a separate Album gain setting (although if there was an easy way for me to tag my music with one then I probably would). However, I also frequently just set a Random mix going - and for that I need the Track gain. Happy to vote for Replay Gain settings to take preference over Apple Sound Check settings if they are present. I would just like the default Album Gain setting to be zero if no explicit tag exists rather than set to equal the Track Gain setting. Re: [slim] Smart Replay Gain where only one adjustment tag
Hi, thanks for the replies. I didn't really want to kick off an argument about Apple being evil for not conforming to standards and I can understand the problems when a file has both the Apple Sound Check adjustment and Replay Gain tags. I guess preferring the Replay Gain tags over Apple Sound Check where present makes sense - certainly adding the values together was always a strange thing to do, but I understand that this at least has been resolved. I agree that I could add Replay Gain tags for both track and album to all of my files, but am reluctant to do so, mainly because I can find no easy way to do this on a Mac (an old Mac unable to run Windows). I think the worry about blowing speakers or hearing damage from my suggestion seems a bit extreme. There is no need for such a safety warning when turning off the Smart Gain setting (ie please check that you do not have your volume set to maximum when doing this because some songs will now become louder) and I thought Smart Gain chose the Track or Album setting at the outset based upon the nature of the playlist, so it shouldn't cause a problem in the middle of a playlist. At the moment Smart Gain is clever enough to choose between T and A depending on the playlist (not sure how it does this, but that is another issue), but if A is not present it defaults to using T. All I am asking is that consideration is given instead to defaulting to zero if A is not present. I can see this as being relevant to a wider range of people than just those of us who have fallen for the evil Apple's charms. Re: [slim] Smart Replay Gain where only one adjustment tag
PS... I should have also noted that I am actually quite happy with the volume adjustment that I now get from the Apple Sound Check iTunesNORM tag. I use a a program called iVolume which takes a bit of time and (apparently) a more robust scientific approach to adjust the iTunesNORM tag calculated by iTunes to a level that seems to do a much better job at equalising volume levels. -- WhaleOil WhaleOil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5227 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62137 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Smart Replay Gain where only one adjustment tag
I know that there has been lots of discussion about Replay Gain, but I wonder if I could suggest a change/enhancement to the behaviour of 'Smart' Replay Gain. As I understand it, the Smart setting recognises if you are playing a series of individual tracks or a complete album and picks the appropriate adjustment based upon the Track and Album replay gain tags in the file. Now here comes the rub. I use iTunes to organise and tag my music and it only has one replay gain tag (actually called Sound Check in Apple world). I think that this is stored as a non-standard tag called iTunesNORM. There does not seem to be an easy way to set separate track and album tags. I guess I could use a different program, but I like iTunes and it works well for me with a mix of MP3 and Apple Lossless files. SC seems to read the iTunes adjustment just fine, but because there is only one tag, it uses the same tag for both Track and Album adjustment and so the Smart setting makes no difference. Could I suggest that where there is only one Volume Adjustment/Sound Check/Replay Gain tag (or equivalently when a specific Album Gain tag is not present) then the SC 'Smart' setting should use the adjustment in the tag for playing individual tracks and set a zero adjustment when playing albums. I recognise that this means there will be a jump in volume when moving from playing individual tracks to an album, but at least once you settle down to listen to an album you can just adjust the volume at the beginning. At the moment, I have to remember to bury down into the settings menu and turn Replay Gain off manually before listening to an album. What do others think? Re: [slim] Duet Controller Artist List
I agree with your post. I am seeing this too. When I browse by artist on the Controller I find albums where that artist is simply the composer (not surprisingly, Bob Dylan is the main offender! - When I browse for the artist Bob Dylan I find tracks by Jimmy Hendrix, Bryan Ferry, U2, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart etc etc...). The SC 7.0.1 browser and SB3 interface do not do this. All my music is organised with iTunes and scanned from there into SC. Maybe some people will say that this is what they want to see, but I agree with you, I just want to see albums where Bob Dylan is the artist, not the composer. I considered changing the tags in my music, but have decided not to for now, as I am sure things will change. I also have another thread (sorry do not know how to link) about Search for Artists showing a different behaviour on the Controller compared to the SB3 and the SC 7.0.1 browser. It seems that there are some inconsistencies between what is shown on the Controller and the SB3/SC browser. I am sure that people could argue for a long time as to which is 'right' or 'better' but it would be good if they could at least be consistent - or even better with a few simple options that might meet most peoples requirements. I am aware that there is a lot of debate about how to treat various different tagging schemes, compilations, classical music etc and it seems that nothing will ever please everyone. For example, I am also frustrated that on SC browser I can browse albums (with artwork) sorted by artist, but cannot do this on the Controller - but am aware that this is a feature that is being worked on. I only wish I had the expertise to help and very much appreciate the work of the developers to date - this system really has improved over the last couple of years and features I wished for have arrived over time. Re: [slim] Search for Artists on Controller
Is anyone else having this problem? It is perhaps worth noting that Search for Artists on SC7 itself and on an SB3 (both with and without using Lazy Search) finds Ian Dury in the example below just fine. It is only Search on the Duet Controller that seems to be much more limited and fails to find him. This suggests that there is some inconsistency between the SB3 and Controller in this respect. I would much prefer search on the Controller to work like search on the SB3. [slim] Search for Artists on Controller
I fear I may be digging up a can of worms given all the other discussions about the treatment of ARTIST, ALBUMARTIST and COMPILATION tags, but I haven't found any other threads about this particular issueso I thought I would take the risk of raising it now. As background, I am running 7.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.3. I have 'Group compilation albums together' and 'List albums by band' set. As far as I understand, when browsing by ARTIST only those artists that have a (non-compilation) album in their own name are listed, ie an ARTIST that appears only on, say, one track on a compilation album (ALBUMARTIST=Various Artists) does not show in the browsing list. Compilation Albums are listed together under 'Various Artists'. This much I am happy with as it massively reduces the size of the 'Browse by Artist' list and restricts it to the 'main' artists in my collection. However, when I Search for Artists on the Controller it seems to restrict the search only to this reduced list. I would much prefer 'Search' to search for ALL Artists, ie even those not included in the 'Browse' list. As an example, the other night I was asked 'Do you have any Ian Dury in your collection'. I duly searched for the Artist Ian Dury and the Controller told me I had 'no search results'. However, on further investigation, I do have a couple of tracks by Ian Dury on a couple of compilation albums. Both these tracks have ARTIST=Ian Dury and ALBUMARTIST=Various Artists and COMPILATION=Yes and are listed fine when I managed to find the album and browse through its tracks. Could 'Search' be broadened to search ALL artists, or should I be doing something differently to achieve this? Re: [slim] Harmony remotes
I have a Logitech 555 and am very happy with it. I have had it since Christmas last year and the batteries are still going strong - I can live with changing four AAA batteries every nine months or so, so having a charging cradle isn't a big deal for me. It would be nice to have more 'soft' buttons, but I have programmed mine to give useful functions to the 'hard' Menu, Exit, Guide and Info buttons that do the job for me for just about everything I need to do. I set it up using the website, and after a few goes got a set up that worked for me - haven't had to go back to the website since, so again that is not a problem. Overall, highly recommended, and for my money the 555 seems to be at the sweet spot of value for money vs features. -- WhaleOil WhaleOil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5227 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37083 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] AlbumArtist not scanned with iTunes 7.2 and Apple Lossless files
Is anyone else having this problem? I am using Mac OS X 10.4.9 and iTunes 7.2. I have tried Slimserver 6.5.1, 6.5.2 and the latest 6.5.3 and all of them no longer pick up the AlbumArtist from iTunes. This seems to be specific to Apple Lossless and AAC files. For MP3 files, the iTunes AlbumArtist is shown in slimserver's Song Info as Band/Orchestra. For Apple Lossless and AAC files, the iTunes AlbumArtist is not shown at all. All the other tags still seem to be scanning as normal. I have tried several full re-scans and have deleted the Slimserver cache and re-started, but still Slimserver does not pick up the AlbumArtist tags This used to work fine, so assume something has changed in iTunes 7.2. Any help would be appreciated, as I find AlbumArtist very useful for organising albums with several different contributing artists. -- WhaleOil WhaleOil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5227 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36341 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Volume Adjustment with iTunes 7.0
I have my music as Apple Lossless in iTunes. Slimserver 6.5b3 was able to read the Volume Adjustment/Sound Check information (and show it in 'Song Info') and all was fine. However, I have just ripped some new CDs using iTunes 7.0 and done a full clear and re-scan of the slimserver library and now something seems to have gone wrong. The existing files are all fine and the Volume Adjustment information is all present and correct and working properly in slimserver. However, the Volume Adjustment information is not shown in slimserver for the new CDs, even though iTunes is showing adjustments for these new files in just the same way as for all the other files. I do not know enough to be able to check if Apple have somehow (deliberately or accidentally?) changed the way that the Volume Adjustment/Sound Check information is being stored for music files ripped with iTunes 7. Is anyone else experiencing this, and does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?
