Re: [slim] Best android hardware for Squeezebox remote ?

2011-12-18 Thread arztde

Erland, i understand you like to use and develope for new hardware.

I personaly liketo keep you thinking in something: not anyone have the
money and like to use and buy new hardware just to use as a remote.

A lot of users have old mobile phones and when they get a new their
question appear, is what they do with the old one.

My personal story was: I did lost my old phone once and at same time my
Car navigation system was stolen.
I got a HTC touch diamond but for this phone at this time did not exist
any squeeze remote. Locuth a C++ developer did not have any squeezebox
hardware and not any smartphone but he was loving programming just for
fun.

He did develope a remote just for fun without any possibility to test
it in real live. But it was amazing: his alpha remote was at this time
working and was one of the best i ever saw.
I did not have any squeezebox hardware at this time and i bought a used
Duet and without to see it, i did send it directly to Locuth that he did
have more ease to develope his slimcontrol for a beta release. And i
thought it is a good idea to send him also my new HTC Diamond for
optimize Slimcontrol in the next beta to my phone.
After 3 months i got my phone back and i did bought me in this time a
SB3 classic so i let Locuth the Duet for further developement.
Slimcontrol is still for me one of the best remote solutions because it
do not all but is absolute optimised for usability and to be fast.

Now the next point:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=244

There exist a more than 10 years old mobile the Blue Angel and was
possible to get such a phone for just 20 Euros. It is allways sold
including a cradle and so is a optimal solution for a remote. And there
are plans to transfer this old hardware to FROYO.

There exist another HTC old Win Mobile phone with very good
instructions how to flash it with Android (HTC Kaiser):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=376

I did bought a HTC Kaiser last week in Ebay for just 15 Euros and
flashed it to Android 3.2
Shure its not the fast one but for to use it as Squeezebox or XBMC or
VDR remote its a very good and fast enough solution.
Just investment of 15 Euros for a good remote and so i have now in each
room such remote.

New Windows mobille you can not use C++ for developement as far i
know.
My idea in yours posting is now somehow to contact locuth or if you
like the idea drop me a private message and i contact you with Locuth.

What i did found allways in yours plugins, that they need a lot of
hardware resources and because i use low powered hardware for NAS or PC
they are good but its not a good idea to run your Plugins for such a
hardware.

Maybee you can do a very best remote with training to programm for low
powered hardware. ITS NOT A ATTACK against you, please do not
understand me wrong. I am not a programmer, but i see only all the
programming you do needs powered hardware. Maybee this can be improved
if you are pressed to do something for old hardware with another style
of programming with same results. HTC desire is again something with
high power hardware. So i keep just the topic: For me a flashed HTC
Kaiser is the best Android for the moment because i do not have
another. And my measure is a remote should be in this way programmed
that this phone works good together.
I did test now some Android remote solutions now but no Application run
from usability point like Slimcontrol. Maybee after talk with Locuth you
share some code and go on with him together to make such a control
solution

[slim] HowTo Use LastFM for free with SlimControl and other Developement Ideas for plugin

2011-02-28 Thread arztde

Arround one year ago i did have a communication with a developer from
LastFM stuff.

It was a discussion about some Ideas to use LastFM with the Xtreamer
and to have an own Internet TV Musik station similar like MTV but
specialized to look videos from your favourite scrobbelt music.

He did write me: Thanks. I haven’t tried out Xtreamer, but it looks
nice. I’ve officially stopped working on my project a couple of years
ago, but you can find plenty of articles about it online. Over the
years I’ve had a couple of requests for integrations with other
platforms, so I created an API. Documentation is pretty sparse, but it
should be enough to get you started.

Youtube + Last.fm API
http://api.tv.timbormans.com/

I looked arround and i think its a good idea to focus developers a
little bit to this API.

In general it seems to me not to much difficult to extract code because
for example Locuth (SlimControl developer) use similar methods for the
integration of the Lyrics inside the WinMobile remote for Squeezebox.

In general i think it should not to much difficult to adapt this API
for different use and make it possible to have a free acces to LastFM.

At the moment SlimControl is not billed. Users can take and use it for
free. Just need to register. Its just Closed Source. In this point
special for SlimControl i do not see any violation. But with a Plugin
interface inside other commercial products also i do not see a problem
of violation.

Still exist a SqueezeScrobblers group inside LastFM for a Plugin inside
Squeezeboxserver that makes it possible for users outside Germany, USA
and UK to use LastFM in any country.

iPhone 3G with recent OS versions (and I don't even use 4.x on it) is
one of the most painfully slow experiences I've had with smartphones,

In romania the ipeng or mainly the iphone did deny me to connect to a

I need first to read for example in instructions how to group and

So let me play some time first with iPeng and than i will give you some

Re: [slim] Which Product for Second Squeezebox?

2010-08-31 Thread arztde

Some other ideas: Try the O2 Joggler. There is an integrated speaker
inside but you also can use it with active speakers. Some advantage you
have a touch screen what is bigger than the SB-Touch so inside the
office you can use it also as a photo frame.
There was a offer from O2 UK for 50 pounds but now you get it sometimes
from ebay and with a little easy change you can install squeezeplay on
it. Navigation is the same like the Duet controller.

No sometimes you get it in the
bay:http://cgi.ebay.de/o2-Joggler-Digital-Photo-frame-Calender-radio-news-text-/260654883962?pt=UK_AudioElectronicsVideo_Video_TelevisionSetTopBoxes

I also suggest the SB Classic if you get it. More than a second
receiver, because you have a wonderfull display. Its somehow a future
invest.

in 1.3b2 you forgot in the playlist the arows. 30 songs on one page is
to much long to load on devices like the etrayz. so 25 songs will be
fine. the arrows will be good to load and convert the covers in
background.

i did found some other things... special a lost in stability in this
version... not much but anyways... i will check more with logfile. the
time be to set to 9000 in the config was ok. maybee it comes back. i

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2010-02-13 Thread arztde

In any case just provide a backdoor to escape in such situations. I
build here a double handycap. First the bridge from the squeeze to
etrayz.

Why not a message if someone try 3 or 4 times. and than a pointer goto
confg and give a longer time?.

There will be more and more use of Etrayz and when we hopefully have
the player for Xtreamer.

SSOEZ is now a one click installation andworks like a charme.

As more easy it is as more people will use it.
http://forum.xtreamer.net/viewtopic.php?f=168t=12098

Pippin have the most profit from this at the moment. But there are also
special from Germany a big fraction of Android and Winmobile users. They
very often hear the first time from Squeeze.
If a player is there and easy to install i think there are more than 2
who use Squeeze. Additional specialfor ARM processoryou can download in
the nightly builds a Slimserver.

My most heavy fight is that very often comes the message The cache
needs to be rebuild

Its because Hardware not the fastest unit. OK but for the prize i did

additional i have a SSOEZ on the NAS. Its more slow but enough for
normal usage. In case of need so i just go for the eeeBox.
I have to say additional i use it with Slimcontrol as remote and this
make it more faster.
At the moment we compile squeezeslave for Xtreamer and eTRAYz and have
to decide because of missing FPU which way to go. And compiling is for

For the moment i do not care much for any Syabas products or that
mpcclub does have some private dissonations with the xtreamer company.
But the Squeezeboxserver is running on the Xtreamer NAS eTRAYz was done
with help of Flip and he gave this project the name SSOEZ.

And we have some success to get squeezeslave running directly on the
Xtreamer. For the moment it works and its testet with a USB Soundcard.
Not all codecs are working. For example ORG is not working. But FLAC and
MP3 we got to work on this 99.-$ Unit.
Will see what brings the future. :-)

another one tries this way for the moment:

i forward it just from email with copy and paste.

I gave my hardware direct to another developer so not all what are
interest for this and do compile or look arround have the hardware :-)

Idea is to do it remote... maybee to make it more easy and ralphy get
some developer ideas he open a mailinglist at sourceforge. Hopefully he
can get for further developement some new helpers.

If he have remote access for example to a machine in US than he can
solve things like pandora or if in germany he can have a look to lastfm.
there some services are free. this machine for now have no alsa for
example but the company can compile another firmware.

now the stuff from another developer who gave me a mail...

-

we will check what can be done in our side with alsa.

For the Xtreamer it would be great if you/we could design an ALSA
driver that
would patch the Linux sound output to the sound firmware in the
secret
corner of the Xtreamer through some kind of mixer/cross-fader.

For the eTRAYz, just compiling the generic USB sound driver for ALSA
(plus all
other stuff needed to support it) should do the trick.

I did some more checking of the squeezeslave code and I found that:

1 - the mp3 decoder library (libmad) does not use floating-point
arithmetic
2 - FLAC decoder can be built integer-only (code is there, now I have
to
figure out how it is enabled)

So, that leaves me to replace the Ogg/Vorbis decoding to its
fixed-point
Tremor alternative (not a big task, according to the author) and we're
all set
to go.

Can someone point me to an active Squeezebox server somewhere in Europe
so
that I can test this modified integer-only version on my native PC
later this
week? Once I get usable audio on my PC we'll snip out all the audio
code and
move on to native performance testing on eTRAYz and Xtreamer.

Any help will be appregiate

regards Wilfried

At the moment we discuss in several forums and additional mail. Ralphy
do offer not mail here and i thing for good reasons. So i get via mail
infos and have to copy them and forward. To forums and so on.

So if someone give root access that another can help direct on the
remote machine i think its not a good idea to spread this through forums
:-)

Its somehow a first try to bring a player to mediaplayers and a little
testing infrastructure needs to be build. There are several players
around. Most they do not use Alsa. They use specialised chips like
Realtec or sigma. And we need also to find a way to be GPL compatible.
One idea is to compile the firmware with Alsa to have at first step a
audio output with a simple usb soundcard and than step by step to go
on.

Old developers remember for shure how long it does take to make drivers
for Wlan linux support because they where not given by the industries.
I think at least it will be usefull for devices like SheevaPlug, NAS
like synology, qnap and etrayz and also as a example xtreamer.

i personaly have no developers skills... sad but its so. I try to help
with ideas and hands on in coordination. Find translators or some who
like to do documentation. In this way everyone can concentrate to the
skills he have.

I am not so unexperienced and did not have much problems before this

Because mediaplayers have their biggest problem to play reasonable

i am shure after such an announcement noone look to facebook or

And also the most users in such a case have no problem with a

Maybee this 7.4 is the small step of logitech to go exact in this

WHOW, and you realy think the change you are happy with this change?
YOU are the first one that announce the switching back from
iPhone/iPeng. Interesting for others to hear, because it should happen
not so often that someone use both solutions.

The change and testing to 7.4 was very painfull in my case. I did setup
7.4 onmy laptop. and did try first to use it with the software players
first. Special the Squeezeplay Software what should be similar to the
Duet was not working and was not able to connect to the server and
special to mysqueezeboxnetwork.com
Because Locuth use my Duet (in parts for developement) i hope until i
see not less rumors he do not update for some days to 7.4

This cause major problems for compatibility of Slimcontrol because it
is optimised for 7.1-7.33.

The squeezenetwork was not necessary until now, because Locuth do it in
a different way to make the Services (Applications like Last.fm) running
without the Squeezenetwork connection.

Here in fact i see now a problem with 7.4 because there seems a major
change. I can no more use with SlimControl Last.FM advanced features
like i could do before. And they where special more advanced than inside
SB3 possible. It was more easy to find any song and artist than in any
other online libary directly.
As it runs now it needs to sort out how to do best. Maybee a version
1.0 what is announced as stable needs to come in 2 Versions for server
up to 7.3x and another that runs from Version 7.4
Sad this is, so short in front of release date 1.0 of SlimControl to
see such major changes inside the Server.

If i look through the resources the SB3 is no more listed inside the

Anyways after i did have damaged my SB3 (3month old) i packed it to

they force in this way the 7.4. With the Duet it happen the same this
reputation lost in past. No this?
In regular i use the hardware together with PDA Slimcontrol.
The Duet controler is only more for me just for testing. I think for
the moment to force 7.4 as major release and stable is not the best way.
Christmass is time enough to make it ready to be stable.
Is it realy necessary to make 90 % of happy customers NOW to beta
testers for the SB Radio. My idea was to buy one at christmass to put it
inside a stable solution without major bugs. There is no need to make me
as a beta tester until christmass. The best way to demonstrate somehow
stability is to force the developement of the software players. It was
allways my argument in front of friends to decide to buy the hardware
after intensive testing with the software players.
The way is than to buy one SB Modell and use intermediate the software
player as intermediate solution for Multiroom until they buy the next SB
Modell.

sweep the finger to the left or right the cover does not flow until the
next cover is reached. In other words you can scroll only half of the
cover. I really see no use for it and often it necessary to have to
sweep two or three times in order to flow to the next cover.

 2. Also when I scroll to the next cover after the one that is actually
playing, I can't do anyhting with it. I think it would be great if
pressing and holding the finger on the cover it would pop up a menu
allowing to add it to the playlist or replace it.

Finally thinking of playlists, is there anyway to clear the playlist? I
can only find out how to add more songs but not to clear it.

 Thanks

Your thinking goes as far as i know into the right direction... Give
Sebastian the Chance not to produce only one Version and time and
patience to interate yours idea.
I give you another point.

3. What to do if in the player mode with the turning cover? ;)
Brainstorming is goodin this point. I like to see the lyrics of the song
for example. But there is enough space on the Back cover side to
integrate plugin buttons. Sebastians good programming style have since
the first version i saw a lot of thinkings in front for a lot of things.

Locuth does have reasons to take it away again. Beta testing means to

the cache features. :-) But no point than to concern. Others that do

I do apply to finalize it and help with translations.

In other words I am not home right now and need him to send back

I did put several playlists from diverent services and pass them
through MusicIP so at least more than 11000 Songs including mp3, Flac,
Multichannel Flac, wave and DTS have to be put in this one playlist.
You can not say it is an issue of SlimControl. Its only an issue of

I will send late in the night the Version. Its important to deinstall

I see from this point a lots of possibilities for plugin developers if

It'd make my year if it were possible.

To get SC running on a C200 will be possible. Just from hardware
aspect. I did follow this idea some time but if you include it all in
all its a very expensive solution. Additional Sigma the producer of the
chip have problems with GPL licensed stuff. I saw it with the MPD.
Someone who have the libaries of the Sigma chip, did compile MPD but
didn't give back the tools to compile it again and make changes. So in
fact, after it was shure that it was a GPL violation Moderators still
support in their forums to find the Violation file. I think its better
not to start at this point.
Anyways to compile player or or to write a application is not the best
with this background.
Additional if you see it all in all its a very expensive solution for a
chip with arround 600 MHZ. In Germany including harddisc you are very
fast more than 500.- Euro.

I have a A110 and the Audio still sucks.

You wouldn't need a battery of external drives to do the job, you can
 install 2 2.5'' drives and 1 3.5'' drive, but I do also have a 3TB soon
to be 4.5TB DAS which the C-200 would have access to.

Just think, rather than buying a £300+ NAS, you could buy a £240 media
and blu ray player, and you could have the best of all worlds...

I'm not thinking about using the C-200 to play music, but as a server
 for my 2 SB's

As its so think that SC needs a lot of power of the main processor.
Maybee its better to wait for the next generation of Multimediaplayers,
when they have arround 1.2 - 1.6 GHZ. You can read in different threads
when People change SC from their NAS to a mini PC like EEE-BOX. Its not
noisy, take only arround 8.- Euro/Year of Energy if its runs 7/24. I did
placed mine in the kitchen and have an additional Squeezeplayer.
In fact with a little monitor and cheap boxes like xtreamer you have
realy a multimedia solution, what fits your needs. 500 GB harddisk in
each and integrate in the network let you things like a NAS forget.
In the main room than a solution like transporter and you are in a high
definition quality and do not need to make a lots of compromise with
quality and navigation of a A110 or a C200. For me i did decide no more
to make any compromise just to have all in all in one solution.

Re: [slim] Popcorn hour C-200

2009-08-03 Thread arztde

Well, since you haven't tried the C-200...

I did try. But i wouldn't like to tell here the circumstance. It was an
early firmware on it and not a final release. So i can say only final
release should be better.

It's not good performance at all, but it runs. We might look into using
the old 6.5.4 with sqlite or so too, anything to get the extra
performance - if needed - to make it run.

I did say exact this in my first posting here in this thread from
technical point...

And what does GPL violations and mpd got to do with anything concerning
running SqueezeCenter on on the NMT platform? That's totally mixing
 apples with pears.

I agree. Because i know also PCH Mods read inside here :-) was just a
sidekick to the things what make sence.
To buy a new C200 machine and let SC run to keep it run. Expensive
Solution. If you have a C200 and no other possibilities for SC ok, do
it.
What can make sense is a player for the SC. But here it can not be Open
Source, because of Sigmas restrictions.

And there's no compromise in audio quality whatsoever. The only thing I
can think of is the usability with slow navigation of big media
 libraries.
Sigma Chips are known for not the best Audio Quality. Analog audio
output of the A110 is well known. Digital output goes direct through the
Sigma chip. I prefer SB3 and Duet Sound Quality

You are entitled to your opinion about NMT's, but it will not change the
minds of those who will have a C-200 and is looking for a way to serve
their Squeezeboxes/Transporters/Duets/whatevers from it - as the
 original post is about.

I beleave your promisses it will be made possible... Somehow. When C200
is available i am awaiting your instalation instruction... If it comes.

Ok i must tell others that i personally was never so dissapointet with
a product like the A110. I do not own a TV and did bought it because i
did beleave of the promises it can play audio via network. But i did
beleave in their promisses to make a reasonable audio possible. So i mix
to much negative emotions inside this.
The best i was done after this i bought a Squeezebox and here i have to
say thanks to the PCH forums to make me attention to it.

The other possibility is working, but not comfortable now. I did test
it a little bit arround with the MORT Player. From Slim Control i did
put a Playlist what i like to listenfor. This playlist i can stream to

In fact open from Mort http://ip-number:9000/stream.mp3

Than you can go out of the house with your bike and listen music...

reorganised by iTunes would be difficult to synchronise with the main
library. I'd prefer to use another application to iTunes but recognise
that iTunes has broader benefits that will make it worth using. And
maybe I'm being paranoid about iTunes :-)

I'd appreciate any thoughts from those of you who have been through
similar decisions, as well as general comments on the pros and cons of
the iPhone itself. I have to admit the iPhone does look cool and I am
 tempted:-)

I own a HTC Touch Diamond and it have all what you need. Including a
nice upgrowing Squeeze Remote Control ... Look here inside the forum for
SlimControl and test it. I gave some time Sebastian the developer my HTC
phone to optimize SlimControl. Just test it and be surprized.

Re: [slim] Best mobile phone for controlling SB?

If all you want is a remote, don't buy a phone at all. Buy an iPod
Touch. iPeng works perfectly on the Touch. I'm no Apple evangelist, but
I've found the Touch to be a very fun device for audio books in the car,
movies during air travel, and SqueezeBox controlling via iPeng.

This all i can do with my 27.- Euro Win Mobile too. Additional i have
here in Germany a UMTS Sim, what allows not to phone but have a internet
access. And i did testet with remote of a early developement of
slimcontrol uncompressed streaming from my home squezecenter. It works.
And best i do not need iTunes.

What to say. I have not try iPeng for the moment and i realy can not
compare it. iPeng was long time alone and a lot of users did bought a
IPod or IPhone just for this. But Slimcontrol opens it to PDA.
I think its good enough to have a look to it. You cannot say anymore i
like a control and i have no choise.

There is also a port of SqueezePlay (the software on the Controller)
being worked on for WindowsMobile devices.

Keep a look to another application its Slimcontrol. And its new in the
line, but i think for windows Mobile Phones somehow the best. I am in
discussion with Sebastian the developer and we test it also at the
moment for multi room connectivity and also over the Internet.

I did support Sebastian with a Xtreamer Multimedia Player. To keep his
focus also in direction of Android. As well some other Developers from
the Popcorn Hour Scene are involved to help to make a first step for
play and control the Xtreamer by mobile phones.

 Hi Locuth

i'm new in this board and i'm testing SlimControl 0.95. It's a very
nice program. Arztde shows it me.
 I'm missing two features:
 - a minimize button
 - a solution to browse in the musicfolder because ma tags aren't very
 good.

I can test the 0.96 beta for you on my MDA Touch (HTC Touch).

 regards
 MEC

Hi mec02,
i hope you enjoy your new classic SB and the time of suffer with the
Popcorn Hour is soon away.
ad 1. the tip to minimize for 0.95 at the HTC is just to press the home
button. It change in 0.96. I did post in German thread a screenshoot of
another Minimize Solution, just to minimize with a little navigation bar
to have fast access.
ad 2. I did have a special fast hack for folders from Sebastian... But
still to much buggy. But was a fast hack only.

As far i know Sebastian meanwhile he only release if you nearly find no
more bugs.

@Sebastian
Maybee you meet Pippin in Berlin this weekend to interchange each
others application live?

I hope other beta testers do help Sebastian as a respect and honor to
help him with a thing no programmer or developer like realy. Its to
write a lovely manual. Maybee my ideas are realy not good i did posted
in the 0.95 thread.

A manual does sound like a good idea, and I dont mind helping with that
 - just not sure what to do / how much you guys have already written :)

What you think about this for cover?
