Re: [slim] Squeezeslave stops playing after changing tracks

2010-11-05 Thread Dean L. Surkin

Dear Ralphy:

The correctly-complied Squeezeslave worked fine for four days, then it
stopped working this morning. Similar symptoms as before: I added three
songs to a queue, Squeezeslave played the first two, and then when the
third one started there was no sound (the Controller showed time
elapsing on the playback, however).

I'm using a home-built AMD system, running Ubuntu 10.4 server in 64-bit
mode with all updates, headless, 4 GB RAM, most current version of
Squeezeslave which I just compiled last week, Squeezebox Server 7.5
(last updated from the nightly build 10/30/2010).

Thanks for your help.

[slim] Where's Dean?

2009-09-01 Thread dean

Dear friends,

You may have noticed a change in the title under my name. Today marks
my last day as a paid employee of Logitech. I've been working on
Squeezebox (and before that, SLIMP3) since 2001 and it's time to take a
break and slow down a little bit.

It's been an incredible experience, meeting so many unbelievably
passionate and brilliant people in this community, collaborating on some
great products and making music fun again for myself and for a few other
folks. Thank you to everyone!

But you haven't seen the last of me. I started out as a customer,
community member and open source contributor, and while I'm not getting
paid for it anymore, I'm incredibly excited about the new products that
are on the horizon and plan to stay an active member of the community.

I don't have any specific plans for the future, except to finish
cleaning the basement, see if I can remember how to program, and to
spend a bit more time with my family (until they tell me to get out of
the house and find a job!)

So again, thank you, I'll see you around!

All the best,

dean

Re: [slim] Streaming and Open Standards

2008-10-31 Thread dean

A couple of notes here:

1. The core of the SqueezeCenter software is licensed under the GPL.
Some components that are packaged with it are not (installers, some
graphics, fonts, etc...), so redistributing a version of SqueezeCenter
that uses these would require some kind of license with Logitech.

2. The protocols are completely open and folks are welcome to build
clients to connect to SqueezeCenter.

3. The firmware in the Squeezebox
1/2/3/Classic/Boom/Receiver/Transporter is closed source, alas, due to
some restrictions from the manufacturer of our CPU chip.

4. The software running on the Squeezebox Controller and SqueezePlay is
open and licensed under the Logitech Public Source License, which has
some restrictions on redistribution but is available for licensing.

5. We welcome OEMs and other partners who want to license hardware or
software. PM me if you are interested!

End-to-end, the Squeezebox system should color your music very very

What inputs are you using on your stereo? Some folks inadvertently use

Re: [slim] Where is controller's expansion port?

2008-08-13 Thread dean

The expansion port is really used for factory test, low level software
development and debugging. (i.e. when you need a serial console really
really bad).

It's not a supported feature of the product (i.e. when you plug
something into it and it breaks, it's not covered by the warranty).

That said, if anyone is interested in some low-level hacking, let me
know and I can post the pinout of the port.

Re: [slim] Duet Controller artwork quality - no dithering done?

2008-03-09 Thread dean blackketter
Thanks for the pictures. I'm playing with it in photoshop and put
your image up on the Controller screen.

I see a couple of things:

1. The color banding effects are strong with this particular image.
I was able to reproduce the color pattern closely in photoshop with 32
levels of posterization (approximately 555 encoding). The quality of
the image is definitely improved with a 565 dither.

2. The photo you took appears to be taken from slightly above
perpendicular to the screen. The viewing angle on the Controller LCD
is better from the natural angle when holding the device in your hand,
slightly _below_ perpendicular. I was able to verify that the image
looks a much better when viewed normally in the hand.

So the takeaway is that we can do better by doing a proper dither on
the device from 888 to 565. Also, the viewing angle matters.

Please get in touch with our support team. The community (including some
Logitech/Slim employees) can help here in the forums, but the support
ninjas will do a much better job and will be able to help one-on-one

That said, it sounds like from your description:

1. The Controller has good signal strength and is connected well.
2. The Receiver is the one having problems (audio cutting out, etc).

How far away is the Receiver from your access point? Is it in a metal
cabinet or in some other place where it would have difficulty
connecting wirelessly?

It's interesting that things got better when you changed your wireless
channel on your access point. I suspect that this is a basic wireless
signal strength issue.

In any case, the support team can walk you through a lot of
troubleshooting and probably get you up and running.

Re: [slim] Duet Controller artwork quality - no dithering done?

2008-03-08 Thread dean

The SBC display is actually 16-bit.

The images are converted to 24-bit GD format, which is essentially raw,
then sent to the SBC and displayed as 16-bit (5-6-5). There is some
banding, but I don't think that it's as bad as the example you posted.

The SBC doesn't do any dithering, but it probably should. (The
dithering could also happen on the server side, it's not obvious to me
where it should happen.)

Can you file a bug on http://bugs.slimdevices.com and attach the
original image that you are having problems with?

The current setup software on the Controller doesn't let you configure

As has been discussed in other threads, Robin is working on a

Thanks. I will do that. Obviously the software is doing some really

Now I'm guessing that it might be converted to 8-bits to limit
 bandwith

Re: [slim] silly question: slimp3 and squeezenetwork?

2008-03-05 Thread dean

I think that this is a typo.

SqueezeCenter (formerly SlimServer) works with all the old players,
from SLIMP3 through Squeezebox 1, 2, 3, Transporter, SoftSqueeze,
Squeezebox Receiver and Squeezebox Controller.

SqueezeCenter can use SqueezeNetwork to provide access to a number of
internet radio and music services on all these devices, though there
are a few limitations. For example Rhapsody doesn't work with SLIMP3,
SoftSqueeze and SB1.

Most of the devices can connect to SqueezeNetwork directly (without the
need of SqueezeCenter running nearby). Alas, SLIMP3 and SB1 cannot.

Re: [slim] How to disassemble the squeezebox remote?

2008-01-25 Thread dean

So, taking it apart is not officially sanctioned, and you risk breaking
the little tabs that hold the front of the remote in place if you do
open it up.And you might break a nail.

That said: It's not hard. There aren't any screws holding it
together, you just need to pry the front face from the back cup,
without snapping the tabs that hold it down.

First, take the battery door off and the batteries out. Slide a
fingernail or screwdriver in the crack between the front face and and
one of the sides. Pry up gently and move the tool along the edge
prying until the face comes out all the way around. It should snap out
easily.

Take care not to get the black carbon pucks that contact the printed
circuit board (or the board itself) dirty, it'll make the buttons
unreliable.

Putting it back together is just a matter of lining up the front plate,
buttons and clear spacer correctly and snapping it all back together.

Over the wireless. When the Squeezebox Receiver is first powered up
(or after pressing and holding the button on the front to put it into
setup mode), it starts listening over wireless for a setup message
from a Squeezebox Controller.

Will this new setup method be 'ported' to the old SB3?
We do plan on adding this to a future release of the Squeezebox3 and
Transporter firmware, but as Mike said, it's fairly low priority
since you can easily set up those units using the VFD display and

That depends on the usage. Constant usage is around 3 hours now, but
that's without any power management at all. When the screen dims

I assume the thing it's sitting in is a charging cradle, which

Probably not. Better a side table where you can have a wire to keep
it charged. When it's in the charging stand it acts as a Now Playing
screensaver while playing, or defaults to a clock screensaver when not.

 Does the device remain on all the time;
Yes.

if not, how long would it take to be functional from power-off?
From inserting the battery, through cold-boot, wireless association
and connection to the server is about 40 seconds at this point, or
half what my cell phone takes. :)

I agree, something in the form factor of an iPod would have been more

version of the controller might not be to let it act as a portable
device, but the current form factor allows you to take it with you out
in the garden to continue listening to music when you go outside.
That's right. The Controller is designed to be used around the

This is the first version, but I'm personally already dreaming of a

The bundle of the two is called Squeezebox Duet and will list for $399US.
For the time being, you'll need to have at least one Controller to set up a

Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here

2008-01-05 Thread dean blackketter
To clear up a little bit about the new product announcement.

There are two new hardware products, the Squeezebox Receiver and the
Squeezebox Controller. These are available separately, but when
bought together the bundle is called Squeezebox Duet.

Squeezebox Receiver is based on the existing Squeezebox 2/3 hardware
platform with the same amount of memory, CPU speed, wireless card,
etc. In fact the firmware that's running on it is essentially the
same as on the classic Squeezebox. It lacks a headphone jack and
uses a different (but quite good) DAC. In place of a VFD display it
has a single button with an RGB LED behind it. The color of that
button is under software control and indicates if the device is
connected and working properly. The button acts as a pause/unpause
control, or if you press and hold, puts the Receiver into setup mode.

Squeezebox Controller is exactly the same hardware that folks from
the community have been testing under the code-name Jive Hardware
Beta, as discussed here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/
forumdisplay.php?f=19

It's based on an entirely new ARM-based hardware architecture and a
new software platform which has been under development as the Jive
software and will be renamed SqueezeOS.

The Controller uses its built-in 802.11g wireless to talk to
SqueezeCenter and/or SqueezeNetwork as an alternative way to control
your Squeezeboxen or Transporter and has nice 2.4 display and enough
buttons to navigate and play your music on your other devices.

The Controller also has a small built-in speaker and headphone jack
which are used for sound effects for the user interface. Future
software updates could make the Controller a player itself, streaming
your music (or any of the internet radio or music services on
SqueezeNetwork) to the headphone jack. If and when that software
update happens, the Duet bundle would be like getting two players in
one box.

There's also an SD card slot in the unit, an IR transmitter, a 3-axis
accelerometer and an expansion port on the bottom. What software
features get added depends largely on what the community comes up
with, there's already a bunch of neat applets and other software that
have been created during the beta program.

I'm REALLY excited about these new products. Folks have been asking
for a couple of new products from us for a while: a less expensive
Squeezebox and a remote with a display. We did that.

But it gets better. The Squeezebox Controller is based on a totally
new and open platform for software development. In the same way that
SqueezeCenter (nee SlimServer) was a platform for our community to
create new ways of listening to music, Squeezebox Controller and
SqueezeOS are platforms for building new ways of controlling your
music and more.

You ain't seen nothing yet.
