I just pre-ordered an iPad this morning. Clearly, it (and other slate devices) could be a game-changer in that you can easily use the SqueezeCenter web interface in its full glory, something that was obviously not possible on smaller devices. Hence, the need for applications like iPeng on the iPhone. Android has several apps, too. In light of this new class of devices, will we see an iPeng specifically for the iPad? Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?
I'd be interested to know if anyone can explain the following situation. I just purchased an iMac and set it up yesterday. I transferred my mp3 collection over from my PC - where I had been running MusicIP and SqueezeCenter (successfully). I have about 13,000 songs in my library, and I thought it would take at least a full day to have MIP scan the entire library from scratch (as I stupidly forgot to copy over the MIP archive from my PC). Well, lo and behold, as soon as MIP was done importing the library, I was able to make mixes again. The whol process only took a few minutes. How is that possible? I was sure that MIP would have to analyze all the songs from scratch...unless, is the MIP metadata (for lack of better word) saved in each mp3 file? I'm just curious. Anyway, my migration over to the Mac was so easy. In addition to getting MIP integrated so quickly, my Duet/Controller worked without doing anything! Really cool. If I had known it was this problem-free, I would have switched along time ago. -- ezkcdude There are 10 kind of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't. Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?
I think I figured out what is going on. I found this on the MIP website: Although the acoustical information created by MusicIP Mixer (fingerprints and analysis) is stored primarly in the cache, you can also save this information into your music files directly as custom tags. This will make things easier if your songs frequently change location, or move from machine to machine. To do this, right-click on one or more songs and choose Archive Analysis. This will write two extra tags to each file, in a format appropriate for that file (for example, ID3 tags for MP3 files). The next time MusicIP Mixer loads one of those files, it will be recognized immediately. I think when you choose to Archive (which I did on my PC), it wrote the info into the mp3 files. That's why it didn't need to re-analyze my library when I imported them into my new Mac. Hope this helps others, as it obviously is not OS-specific. -- ezkcdude There are 10 kind of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't. Re: [slim] Before I Switch to Mac...What Should I Know?
In terms of stability (i.e. not crashing the entire system) I find OS X much better. I also like the Mac keyboard very much, especially the convenient USB ports. Also, the graphics on my iMac at work are fine - especially since I don't play games. The only reason I hesitate to get a Mac at home is because I don't have experience running SqueezeCenter on OS X or ripping/compression with the Mac toolset. Re: [slim] Why the focus on specialized NAS devices?
As long as one can fit his/her entire music directory on one hard drive, then coming up with solutions is easy. It's when your directory has to span multiple (physical) volumes, that you begin looking into RAID. At that point, many people will sooner shell out cash for a proven solution, rather than reinvent the wheel. The OP said he had two 160 GB drives. Just basic CD functionality (e.g. Play, Skip, Stop, etc.). you'd be happy with no display? The display would obviously be important, and I'm sure SD wouldn't add this feature unless the display could be used. Look, it's a matter of cost. I'm an engineer, so that's how I look at it. This can be done, it just depends on the cost, not just the cost of the device, but also development costs. I understand that. aubuti;160930 Wrote: Like Robin radish said, it is a huge departure from the current engineering, and is close to starting over from scratch. I wasn't suggesting the entire architecture be scrapped. I think this feature (reading from external USB or flash) should be added. I wouldn't want to take anything away. I can imagine that it could have more mass market appeal than the current server + slim client architecture, although the significant price bump (associated with putting the server functions in the SB) would likely dampen that appeal. Tell you what. I am happy with the SB3, but I would pay $100-200 more to have this feature added. I think it's worth more than any audiophile upgrade the Transporter has, and that's $2000! I think there are quite a few folks who would agree. *If we are really going to replace CD players/transports, this is the must-have feature, not Jung-regulators and miracle DAC's.* Personally, I don't see the value in making SB more expensive so that you can either add a noisy external HDD or a puny USB/SD drive. But maybe someone else does, so more power to them. Puny? There are 8GB flash cards now. That's a lot of music - enough for a week or more for my listening habits. But ezkcdude, you still haven't addressed the simple question: do you propose the server functions (hardware software) go in the SB or in the USB/SD device? If you don't want to lose that in your all-in-one solution, don't forget adding the capability for it to serve *other* SBs. Having to trot an external drive or memory card around to wherever I wanted to listen would be a huge step backwards. Somewhere along the line, I think you got the *mistaken* idea that I want to ditch the server/streaming functionality. No! I love the streaming, and that would probably still account for most of my listening, even if I could stick in a flash card. I realized the other day that the reason SS was crashing for me was the Fishbone interface! I had been using the default interface for several weeks, since I had switched back to 6.3. Once I realized the problem, I was not sure what to do, because I couldn't get back in to the SlimServer web app. Then, I figured out I could change the interface setting in the configuration file, and voila, SS was back up.
