Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2010-03-12 Thread ezkcdude

I just pre-ordered an iPad this morning. Clearly, it (and other slate
devices) could be a game-changer in that you can easily use the
SqueezeCenter web interface in its full glory, something that was
obviously not possible on smaller devices. Hence, the need for
applications like iPeng on the iPhone. Android has several apps, too.

In light of this new class of devices, will we see an iPeng
specifically for the iPad? Perhaps, with the larger format, there are a
whole new host of applications that would make sense. Any thoughts?

to use GPS information to find upcoming gigs in the local area of
whatever band you're listening to or similar-sounding bands (perhaps,

I did the Genius thing too last night. It's not based on MusicIP. It
will only recommend music that is available on iTunes, which can be
annoying if you have more eclectic tastes. OTOH, MusicIP can identify
every single song in your library and let you create mixes based on
every song. Genius can't do that. However, if you do purchase a lot of
music on iTunes, I can see how it would be useful.

Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?

2008-09-09 Thread ezkcdude

I'd be interested to know if anyone can explain the following situation.
I just purchased an iMac and set it up yesterday. I transferred my mp3
collection over from my PC - where I had been running MusicIP and
SqueezeCenter (successfully). I have about 13,000 songs in my library,
and I thought it would take at least a full day to have MIP scan the
entire library from scratch (as I stupidly forgot to copy over the MIP
archive from my PC). Well, lo and behold, as soon as MIP was done
importing the library, I was able to make mixes again. The whol process
only took a few minutes. How is that possible? I was sure that MIP would
have to analyze all the songs from scratch...unless, is the MIP
metadata (for lack of better word) saved in each mp3 file? I'm just
curious.

Anyway, my migration over to the Mac was so easy. In addition to
getting MIP integrated so quickly, my Duet/Controller worked without
doing anything! Really cool. If I had known it was this problem-free, I
would have switched along time ago.

Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?

2008-09-09 Thread ezkcdude

I think I figured out what is going on. I found this on the MIP website:

Although the acoustical information created by MusicIP Mixer
(fingerprints and analysis) is stored primarly in the cache, you can
also save this information into your music files directly as custom
tags. This will make things easier if your songs frequently change
location, or move from machine to machine. To do this, right-click on
one or more songs and choose Archive Analysis. This will write two
extra tags to each file, in a format appropriate for that file (for
example, ID3 tags for MP3 files). The next time MusicIP Mixer loads one
of those files, it will be recognized immediately.

I think when you choose to Archive (which I did on my PC), it wrote the
info into the mp3 files. That's why it didn't need to re-analyze my
library when I imported them into my new Mac. Hope this helps others,
as it obviously is not OS-specific.

Re: [slim] iPod Genius similar to MusicIP

2008-09-09 Thread ezkcdude

maggior;338613 Wrote:
That's interesting because I always have thought of MusicIP as being
just like Pandora but limited to your music library.

Pandora is based on the Music Genome Project, while MusicIP has their
own proprietary acoustic fingerprint algorithm. The MGP is based on
actual human acoustical evaluation of songs, which is good in theory.
However, if you listen to much obscure music, they may not have covered
it. Because MIP is a computer algorithm, it can obviously work on any
song - even ones you make up using MIDI.

[slim] Any chance for slimmer Controller in near future?

2008-09-09 Thread ezkcdude

Taking a look at the new iPod Nano, which has a form factor strikingly
similar to the Controller, makes me wonder whether some fat can be
trimmed. I love the Controller, but would love it even more if it was,
say, half as thick. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but in terms of
hardware, aren't these two devices similar, except for the extra
buttons on the Controller? I know nobody can tell us if there's
something in the works...but...it's fun to speculate, anyway.

[slim] Before I Switch to Mac...What Should I Know?

2008-09-02 Thread ezkcdude

After 4 years of dutiful service, my PC seems to have hit the end of the
road - most likely due to a virus of some sort. I've been considering
getting an iMac for some time now (I have a 24 iMac at work and use a
Powerbook G4 regularly). This seems like as good a time as any
therefore. Before I do this, I have some questions:

1) Will I be able to stream/play FLAC files throught the SqueezeCenter
interface to my SB3 and Duet players?

2) Is there an equivalent to EAC now for the Mac?

3) Is there a good FLAC encoder for the Mac?

4) Does MusicIP work just as well on Mac as on XP?

5) Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks, for any and all suggestions/advice!

Re: [slim] Before I Switch to Mac...What Should I Know?

2008-09-02 Thread ezkcdude

In terms of stability (i.e. not crashing the entire system) I find OS X
much better. I also like the Mac keyboard very much, especially the
convenient USB ports. Also, the graphics on my iMac at work are fine -
especially since I don't play games. The only reason I hesitate to get
a Mac at home is because I don't have experience running SqueezeCenter
on OS X or ripping/compression with the Mac toolset. Other than that, I
really prefer Mac to PC by a wide margin.

hasn't finished! I hope that this will calm down too. (I'm careful not
to have MIP analysis running at the same time as a scan, and I have no
 automated SC scans set.)

I realized the same thing in the last couple of days. However, for me,
I think it's worth the added convenience I will have of keeping my
entire library up-to-date and being able to use the controller for
making MIP mixes. Also, did you realize you can schedule SC scans
daily? If not, you will find it under Settings-Plugins-Rescan Music
Library. This is for SC 7.1, not sure about earlier versions. So, if
you have it set to scan every at night or during the day when you're at
work, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Hope that helped.

 ok, so here we go...
What is the SC build number (check server settings for the version

What is the jive build number? See Settings-advanced-about jive

SC should, as always, be the latest nightly (16000+ now)
Jive should be 1279 (more recent builds are disabled for the duration

Yeah, I was busy the last several months as I had to move for a new
job. You're right about missing out on a lot, though! The improvements
made are quite substantial, not the least of which is the on/off
feature. Even the setup of the remote - namely, entering the passkey -
has been made substantially easier. Many of the problems I had written
about many months ago seemed to be solved. I think the jive remote will
now be my *only* remote from now on.

As long as one can fit his/her entire music directory on one hard drive,
then coming up with solutions is easy. It's when your directory has to
span multiple (physical) volumes, that you begin looking into RAID. At
that point, many people will sooner shell out cash for a proven
solution, rather than reinvent the wheel. The OP said he had two 160 GB
drives. I'm curious whether his music folder was entirely on one of
those drives, or if not, how did he set it up.

Clear the Music Folder path in Slim (when it was set it caused havoc

Thinking about this - all that's really missing is some small device

mounted USB volume to computers on that LAN.

Such a thing could be standalone, or built into an SBx. Those USB male

 current
SB has the networking bits and a processor.

Software wise, there would need to be something that recognized when a
new share was available on the LAN and make it available for music

 something in the SS CLI.

Yeah, that would take some doing and require new hardware.

But it would be a cool feature.

Audiophile forum, and check out the new NeoDigits Helios X5000
DVD/media server device. It has pretty much what everyone here has
asked for at some point, and costs $579. It's fine for you to claim it
is very difficult to implement new features, but eventually, others
will do it, and that may come sooner than you realize. At some point,
it becomes too late to play catch up. SD won't be the only player in
this arena for long. In a way, I'm glad Logitech made the acquisition,
because I think they will have the business sense to stay a step ahead

I can hear annoying highpitched squeals from most CRTs, so, no, turning

The NeoServer software runs on a PC.

Stick your head in the sand, if you want. I don't think Logitech will
be so stubborn. I'm not saying anyone should go out and buy that box as
a replacement for the SqueezeBox. What I am saying is that SD/Logitech
should be aware of what other players are doing in the market. You will
*never* be able to market a consumer *entertainment* device (and make no
mistake, that's what the SB is) to the masses by proclaiming it's
*open-source* and *cross-platform*. Consumers want features.
Eventually, you have to give the consumer what they want. And maybe
more importantly, what they *expect*. I think it should be clear that
many of the features of this new Helios player, which are absent on the
SB3/Transporter, will increasingly be expected. One of them, and the
most important to me for now, is the feature of pluggable media.

2006-12-12 Thread ezkcdude

So, I was casing up my DAC finally, and something went horribly wrong,
but I'm not sure what. I have been using the coaxial digital output for
over a year. I think I screwed up the power supply on my DAC by
switching the polarity, and so that explained why I wasn't getting
sound from it. In the meantime, I figured I would switch back to the
analog output from the SqueezeBox, but now that's not working either. I
have no idea why the analog outputs would be affected. Is it possible
that because I haven't used them in so long, it's a problem? I went
into SlimServer and checked the attenuation, and that seems to be o.k.
(set to 0). I'm confused and depressed, because now I have no music for
the first time in a long time. Somebody, help me!

point out again, I am suggesting the *addition* of a feature, not
taking away the server/client architecture. It must be possible to add

disagree with the others is that I am not assuming -a priori- that the

engineering, and is close to starting over from scratch.

I wasn't suggesting the entire architecture be scrapped. I think this
feature (reading from external USB or flash) should be added. I
wouldn't want to take anything away.

I can imagine that it could have more mass market appeal than the
current server + slim client architecture, although the significant
price bump (associated with putting the server functions in the SB)
 would likely dampen that appeal.

Tell you what. I am happy with the SB3, but I would pay $100-200 more
to have this feature added. I think it's worth more than any audiophile
upgrade the Transporter has, and that's $2000! I think there are quite a
few folks who would agree. *If we are really going to replace CD
players/transports, this is the must-have feature, not Jung-regulators
and miracle DAC's.*

Personally, I don't see the value in making SB more expensive so that
you can either add a noisy external HDD or a puny USB/SD drive. But
maybe someone else does, so more power to them.

Puny? There are 8GB flash cards now. That's a lot of music - enough for
a week or more for my listening habits.

But ezkcdude, you still haven't addressed the simple question: do you
propose the server functions (hardware software) go in the SB or in
 the USB/SD device?

I'd prefer everything be in the SB.

Somewhere along the line, I think you got the *mistaken* idea that I

 impossible
For me today in 21th century, I belive on it's impossible that's
impossible so I poursue my quest to get a slim navigation mode that
permit to use SlimDevices product in stand alone.

Thanks! It's obvious that this would be a great feature. Why some
people are seemingly against it is a mystery to me.

There's really no good way to do what you want without a) screwing up
your source files or b) screwing up the sound.

[slim] Re: Slimserver shuts down by itself - why?

2006-10-22 Thread ezkcdude

I realized the other day that the reason SS was crashing for me was the
Fishbone interface! I had been using the default interface for several
weeks, since I had switched back to 6.3. The other day, I figured I try
going back to Fishbone, and lo and behold, SS shut down, right in the
middle of a song. Once I realized the problem, I was not sure what to
do, because I couldn't get back in to the SlimServer web app. Then, I
figured out I could change the interface setting in the configuration
file, and voila, SS was back up. There's something fishy with Fishbone
(sorry, I should've thrown back that pun).
