although I wont be leaving the platform any time soon.

Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug

2012-08-04 Thread fairyliquidizer

be an option for you, with or without the Spicefly Sugarcube plugin.
Erland's plugins use a rules-based approach, where you explicitly write
the rules. In MusicIP and Sugarcube the rules are a bit more of a black
box, like the way Pandora generates playlists.

MusicIP can be a challenge to set up, and its developer did pull the
plug some time ago. But it still works quite well.

MusicIP works just fine. Sugarcube is a nice plugin. I haven't used
any of Erland's plugins other than Trackstat and Licence Manager but I'm
sure they are all good. My view is the ecosystem is excellent for me.
It would be perfectly fine without the extras but the plugins make it
wonderful and probably keep the size of the user base up.

If The Sun Refused to Shine, I would still be loving you... in other
words if Logitech dropped it the server and hardware will continue to do
the job and there is no rush for me to change. I have been a
Slimdevices customer for a long time and I have no reason to wish to
change.

As for video I am happy to use different hardware for that. I don't
want a TV on while using music.

[slim] Android Tablet

2011-10-01 Thread fairyliquidizer

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying an Android Tablet (or waiting for the Amazon
one) and one of the duties will be as SBS remote control. However I'd
like to hear your experiences.

I have had a lot of glitches on the Android phone apps do things work
better on a tablet?

How is the web interface?

Please share your tablet experiences (including iPad if you feel there
is a strong case for it)

I have iPeng on a touch today as a remote control and rather like it
although the battery life of the touch is unimpressive. If the
experiences of other users on Android are poor then I'll consider an
iPad but my first choice is to avoid the Apple ecosystem and to lean
towards a smaller tablet.

Thanks,
Fairy

Hi,

I have recently started listening to NPR 24 news stream and am
wondering if some kind North Americans could suggest NPR streams or
programmes that are interesting for a BBC Radio 4 listener...

Likewise I am struggling to find my way round the CBC streams but
suspect I am missing interesting content.

I am interested in economics, politics, intelligent debate but not
interested in sport chat. Interesting cultural programmes are good
too.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.

[slim] Celebrate The Wonder of The Squeezebox!

2011-06-10 Thread fairyliquidizer

Squeezey Peeps!

As I (we) often come here to seak help... I have came to say thank you
to Logitech, the Slimdevices dudes, the community, and especially the
plugin developers!

I must confess that my SBs fill me with joy. You may think I am
exagerating yet I am not. I bought my SB3 after pondering buying a SB2
for many years. This lead me to digitize my collection as FLAC and
replace my previous digital streamer (a Via EPIA DIY device with LED
and infrared remote).

More recently I wasn't using my SB3 as much as I liked because I had a
manual turn on the server set up. Also I kept wishing for access to my
colleciton in the lounge.

Solution... old laptop as always on server (energy efficient and
convenient) and SB Boom. This was a huge step forward and led to much
more SB use in general. I have now added a radio and with 7.6, latest
firmware and always on server I can awake to a reliable alarm. A
couple of months usage and no glitches. The latest firmware means that
I can fall asleep with headphones plugged in and still get an external
alarm. Perfect!

So I love each and every SB device. The SB3 is still going strong and
is wonderful, the Radio was a real surprise as I love it, and the boom
fulfills a nice role. Spotify plugin, MusicIP, iPlayer, iPlayerExtra,
Custom Browse (for New Albums that isn't messed up by tag edits), and
Spicefly all make the whole system unbelievably good. Oh and the joys
of synched wireless players!

I am still in love with my old flame and hope that Logitech builds a
bright future for an excellent system. 7.6 is going to be a wonderful
release!

Sorry for being so gushing but I just wanted to celebrate the joy of
this ecosystem. I'm sure I'm not the only one who loves the system.

Big smiles,
Fairyliquidizer

Re: [slim] Ideal Server Computer?

2011-05-28 Thread fairyliquidizer

Personally I reckon the argument should start with what hardware you own
and can repurpose.

When I killed my Pogoplug (which with 7.6 I had no performance concerns
with) I remembered that I had an EEE PC 701 with a Celeron M and 1GB
RAM and an nlited XP install. This is more than powerful for running
Squeezebox server with spotify, music ip, custom browse, dynamic
playlists, spicefly sugarcube and a few more plugins.

When the solid state drive on this dies I am getting a laptop from my
sister with a broken display and I'll use that probably with Debian or
vortexbox.

It's all reasonably power efficient and I haven't wasted money on extra
hardware.

Oh my tunes are stored on a 2.5 portable hard disk so no extra power
is required.

[slim] Automatically Powering Down a Dumb Amplifier

2011-05-01 Thread fairyliquidizer

Hi,

I was thinking of moving my squeezebox boom into my bedroom and using
it as an alarm clock (squeezeplug server connected) and moving my SB3
into the kitchen.

The SB3 would be connected to an amp (Creek audio analogue stereo amp)
which has manual on/off switch and no remote control. Is it possible
to connect an energy saving plug or something to the amp which makes it
power down/up based on SB3 activity?

The Boom is nice but my kitchen is large and I find myself listening in
here a lot and missing the Monitor bookshelf speakers.

Thanks,
Fairy

[slim] Squeezebox Radio: Amazon Bargain

2011-04-14 Thread fairyliquidizer

Hi,

I'm starting to regret that I couldn't resist a bargain squeezebox
radio on Amazon.co.uk for £80 so I bought it and I received a shipping
notification from the Marketplace Vendor on the 3rd of April.

It still hasn't arrived. It is a new seller on Marketplace. He is
selling more of the Radios at this price now (or the same one again).

Standard delivery from Royal Mail is usually 3-4 days although the
timeframe listed by Amazon for delivery is longer as cross-border
transactions take longer. However Amazon wont let me file a
non-receipt claim until after his timeframe but I reckon his delivery
estimate: 5 April 2011 - 18 April 2011 is excessive and I am very
worried. Amazon will open the claim window on 21 April 2011.

I have contacted the seller twice and had no replies.

Ultimately I just want a radio and I don't know what's happening. I
guess I was stupid to place an order with a vendor with no history. If
he was communicating and giving say proof of postage then I'd feel
better.

Should I be worried? Any suggestions?

Caveat emptor,
Fairy

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Radio: Amazon Bargain

2011-04-14 Thread fairyliquidizer

Well I really hope I just get the radio. A refund isn't the end of the
world but I will loose a bit of faith in man if the dude doesn't come
up with the goods.

I will post an update to this thread either way as (1) I wouldn't want
to damn someone who may have done his bit and the postal system has let
me down and (2) if he hasn't I wouldn't want anyone else being let
down.

The thing that unsettles me is the lack of reply from him to my
attempts to contact him.

I hope I am just being neurotic! It's a shame I don't know if I really
have a problem as I could order elsewhere then. Still thanks for the
posts. They are all helpful (including the interesting small business
on Amazon angle).

Cheers,

[slim] Logitech Squeezebox Development

2011-04-05 Thread fairyliquidizer

Hi,

I know SlimDevices preferred to keep quiet about developments which at
least saved us from a million is it ready yet? and FFS when will
they release it posts however I was looking at the Logitech porfolio
and the way it is slimming down (older products no longer being pushed
on their site) and wondering if this was just the natural cycle and
some refresh products are immiminent or if things are quietly in
decline.

Is there any signs of life from Logitech?

Thanks,
Fairy

PS- I have been happy with my SB3 and have only just bought a Radio to
add to my family. However I would like to see the family developing
over the years. I also value the fact that old platforms are not
ignored.

I didn't and must confess that in theory a video squeezebox is a good
thing. The issue with video is DRM and many do not wish to strip HiDef
DRM because of local legal restrictions or processing power.

I played with a WDTV for a time but the processing to make digital
copies of my films available in a useable format MKV/M2TS was power and
time intensive. Then I had occasional subtitle/audio encoding issues
and the time increased further. It became more convenient to get up
and change the BluRay disc over.

Ultimately this is probably the future and if it is ever as easy as my
audio life is then I will be happy.

I hope this is a positive sign for Audio products too.

As my eyesight is getting poorer as I get older I have been hoping for
something with a bigger display and album art. This is one interesting
option. However the European price seams very high (especially the
reported price for the standalone remote. Add in UK VAT (17.5%) and
other alternatives start to look more appealing such as using the N800
(£129) which also serves a number of other purposes.

I will wait until I see it for sale in the UK and judge the value then.
I am currently undecided if the value proposition is good enough. I am
pleased to see that the Squeezebox is still evolving though.

that little niggle in the back of your mind that's enough to make me
 rip everything in FLAC.

Yeah my mistake. At 256kbps the difference should be undetectable
except for the worst problem samples. However without it being
lossless transcoding will be ugly. To me you need lossless to get true
portability.

It's a step in the right direction and the bitrate is fine if you
aren't seeking to escape lock in. I bet this is why apple kept it
lossless.

However I bet someone else will beat them to it, like Napster with WMA

Let me introduce myself. My name is Junien Labrousse, Logitech SVP of

The first thing I'll say is that we are very excited about the
opportunity that Slim Devices will bring to Logitech. This is
a great extension of our current business. Let me assure you that one
of the main reasons for this acquisition is the development
capabilities of the Slim Devices team. The technical level of this
group is a key asset that we fully intend to leverage. The Slim Devices
entity will function independently, keeping the spirit of advance audio
 technology and strong product innovation.

Logitech will bring its global distribution and marketing capabilities,
providing a jump start to a large visibility and adoption of Slim
 Devices products.

 Junien

Junien,

Welcome to our world! Congratulations on selecting a great acquisition
target. You have acquired a great team with strong design and
development skills. I am sure that your marketing and distribution
skills will assist in extending the addressable market of the
Squeezebox.

Unlike some of the people here I think that Logitech is a good match.
Sure the Logitech will move into new terrain in some senses but in
others it has long been associated with quality premium products. My
MX700 was reasonably expensive for a mouse when I bought it (just after
launch) and was by far the most expensive mouse I had ever bought. Why
did I buy it? Because it was the best and a quality product, with
excellent build standards. Very similar to the reasons why I bought my
SB3.

Sean et al,

A good move and I hope you grasp this opportunity to acheive greatness.
I personally had worried that the old smaller Slim Devices would
struggle to grow in the face of increasing competition from Apple etc
and would end up limited to a niche market. I now think that there is
every reason why the squeezebox can become the leading brand in digital
home audio.

On a personal note, I like most other people here am very attached to
the Squeezebox and may find future brand changes difficult, however if
it brings a healthy future to SlimDevices, it's people and products
then I for one am very pleased.

Regards,
Fairy

Two reasons: I have had experience of programs complaining of
non-standard tagging in the past and also because any change will be
detected by my backup software and cause a needlessly bloated
incremental backup. That said I gave up and did the tagging which took
seconds I've just disabled my backup for now and will re-enable it once
I actually add some more music.

I still think there is something wrong when I have to manually
intervene to restore functionality that was previously there.
Hopefully it will be fixed soon so I don't have to remember to tag
future compilations manually.

I think the people who have expressed frustration in the thread have
been poorly treated. They have every right to be frustrated as this is
a glaringly obvious regression in the software and should have been
picked up in testing.

I love my squeezebox but am less than impressed with the slimserver

Perhaps someone can let us know when 6.3.2 is coming!

[slim] Plays for Sure/Janus/WMP10/Subscription Music

2006-05-06 Thread fairyliquidizer

I know many or most of the regulars here are anti-DRM, and to some
extent I agree. However I think their is a growing market for
Microsoft Subscription DRM streaming. e.g. Napster, Yahoo Music
Unlimited.

This may be a difficult problem for slimserver, although perhaps
slimserver doesn't need to intervene.

Are there any plans to target this or other DRM systems?

I am mainly a CDDA Buyer, but have some Fairplay and use Napster as a
music discovery/sampling tool. It also gives me a fix when I decide I
must hear a track now and I don't own it.

Thanks,

[slim] Review on the Register

2006-03-03 Thread fairyliquidizer

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/03/02/review_squeezebox_3/

Summary: he likes it but thinks that the DRM issue is unavoidable from
SlimDevices. Oh and another vote for cheapo remote needs updated.

He concludes Slim Devices' Squeezebox remains the best network music
system I've tried, delivering exceptional functionality and superb
audio quality at a very reasonable, affordable price. It's platform
agnostic, working as well on Macs and Linux PCs as it does on Windows
machines, and with SqueezeNetwork, it doesn't even need a computer to
connect through, at least not once the account set-up's done. The
server software is simple to use and as unobtrusive as you want. It
supports a fine array of formats, though it's going to have to address
the DRM problem sooner or later. And, did I mention it looks fantastic?

Thoroughly recommended.

Overall he is impressed. Thinks it's the best.

I have one on order so haven't tried it out yet, but the reviews look

If there was one single thing on the what's next list for Slim, it
ought to be this sort of capability. The fact that this product was
developed and put on the market should be evidence enough that there is
*some* decent interest in getting any audio that is sent to your audio

The only thing I'm interested in here is how does JRiver Media Centre
handle the .m4p files? I looked on their website and couldn't find an
answer.

[slim] Re: How would Slim do DRM?

2006-02-10 Thread fairyliquidizer

A little off topic but...

DRM could be done in an Open Source model. The problem is that most
DRM models involve closed source licence agreements. So the
combination of having to occlude methods and the viral nature of the
GPL mean that the commercial DRM schemes (i.e. the big ones) are
unlikely to ever feature in the open source Slimserver.

Is Slimserver GPL2 or some other open source licence?

As for the SN solution, I would imagine it would be similar to the
process used for AirTunes.

On my SB, it shows 1-40.

I think this explains why it's so bloody loud:

Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see,
most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all
the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your
guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
 Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra

Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.

[slim] Re: iTunes and DRM

2006-02-06 Thread fairyliquidizer

John Stimson Wrote:
You seem intent on making life difficult for yourself. There are
utilities for unlocking AAC files with DRM. I think the hymn tool
that several people have mentioned is one of them. That seems like the
simplest solution to me: use a tool to remove the DRM, then you can use
the mov123 script or FAAD2 to play the resulting unencrypted AAC files
 on your SqueezeBox.

Do these programs still work? I was planning on burning to CD and
ripping as FLAC for the tracks that I have bought.

It is probably wrong to find this as exciting as I do :-S

Are they meant to be quiet?

[slim] Re: Slimbox for travellers

2006-02-05 Thread fairyliquidizer

I'm an iPal user myself. It's a class bathroom radio and you can charge
it up and take it away for the weekend with your iPod. Stereo
separation where the speakers are only a foot or two apart is worthless
so you'd be better off with a quality mono speaker.

As for detecting the difference between 128kbps QuickTime AAC and FLAC,
it's damn difficult even on good speakers. Try a proper ABX test if you
don't beleive me (visit Hydrogenaudio for test setup details).

Retro Fi :)

I have to agree that I'm not sure that I can see the advantage in
bringing the SB. Could you explain your reasoning a little please?

[slim] Re: Beautiful Squeezebox ... Ugly Amplifier

2006-02-04 Thread fairyliquidizer

Hmmm my amp isn't the sexist looking and hasn't had fantastic reviews
but. to my ears it sounds a lot better than the amp I walked into
the shop to buy (and cost 1/3rd the price!).

http://www.hifichoice.co.uk/upload_images/reviews/creek1.jpg

So the moral of the story is... use your ears. Go into a hi fi shop
where you can take the time to listen to the amps you want and go with
what sounds best to you. Also take your own CDs to listen to, this
helps a lot.

[slim] Re: Maybe Slim should recommend and/or sell a wirelessrouter/AP?

2006-02-03 Thread fairyliquidizer

I'm sticking with my WRT54G (a version 1.0!) until it dies. It's a
great wee router (and although the firmware I'm currently running needs
a reboot once every 12 months it's close to perfect).

It is not technically correct to say it is Linux.
It is a Unix/*nix, but the Mac OS-X is son of NextStep
which is BSD based. Linux is a separate development, from
different sources. But to nearly all users, all *nix operating
 systems look and work alike.

Yeah it's elements of BSD running on a Mach Kernel so it's not really
LINUX at all as Linux is a Kernel used to power GNU/Linux Operating
Systems. However it's not really Free BSD but it is based on Free BSD,
so it would have been more accurate to have said part of the BSD family.
Anyway I'm just being a pedant and none of this really matters. I hear
it's quite nice and it can be made more UN*X like (Darwin etc).

For more info read this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS_X

[slim] Squeezebox 3

2006-02-01 Thread fairyliquidizer

Hi!

I've just ordered the Squeezebox 3. I have hesitated on this move for
a while as I wanted:

1. UPNP support so that I can run an Appliance as a server rather than
my beast of a PC

2. iTunes or similar client for real time manipulation of playlists
(the web interface lacks drag and drop and the iTunes integration has a
batch processing feel to it).

3. The ability to stream DRM files from the web music providers.

So why did I buy:

1. Based on pictures on the web the display looks superior on the
Squeezebox

2. I couldn't try a soft client version of the Soundbridge. I think
the software squeezebox client is an excellent selling tool. Customers
can get a feel for how the product works. A SB3 makeover to the skin
may make it a more powerful selling tool.

3. FLAC support (native Apple Lossless would be lovely)

4. 802.11g NOT b. The Soundbridge appears to be B. I'm not running B
traffic on my network especially for streaming.

5. Radio without server support.

Just thought someone somewhere may want to know.

Cheers,
Fairy

You can run an appliance as a server now without uPNP, though
performance is a bit suspect with large libraries. uPNP is yet another
solution in search of a problem.

Is this done by running a version of Slimserver on a NAS device?
