Not always, though, and if I play them again, they get to the end

Maybe the Raspberry/HiFiBerry cannot cope with that load..?

I have setup Qobuz, and sounds good indeed (at a price).

I notice it messes up the order of the playlists, but don't know if it
is Qobuz or the plugin.

Try Philip Glass, Piano Works, DG, Víkingur Ólafsson.

The playlist order is totally random.

[slim] Alternatives to Spotify

2020-04-10 Thread gian

Hello All,

I have a Spotify account, and use the Spotty plugin happily.

What if I wanted to try Amazon, Youtube or Idagio music services?

Idagio is recommended for classical, and that's why I mention it.

Is there a way to use them with Squeezebox server, or a plugin is
required?

I guess that because you need an authentication, you can only do it with
a plugin.

thanks for reading,

-Gian

Thanks, Paul,

I did not notice first the bottom tabs, when I found the advanced

However, I was blocked by the warning at the Beta tab, "can corrupt your

Now it's working and is up since yesterday, it looks pretty solid.

Re: [slim] Bluetooth speaker with pcP

2018-05-18 Thread gian

Hi Paul,

I followed the instructions from the link you provided:

If you have a computer that is running Windows (7 - 64bits for me) you
can modify the "initial device bootmode".

To change the device bootmode :

Download the BlueSuite to modifiy "BlueCore Persistent Store" :
http://www.kcwirefree.com/docs/BlueSuite_2_5.zip
Unplug your Bluetooth dongle
Install the BlueSuite Software (default options)
Plug your Bluetooth dongle in another port than previously
Run CSR BlueSuite 2.5.0 / PSTool as Administrator
With the first window : Choose Transport = USB then Port = \\.\csr0
and click OK
In the Filter box, type bootmode then click on the item "Initial
device bootmode"
Note the hex number in case something goes wrong (mine was 0002),
then change to
Click on the Set button then click on the Close button
Wait some seconds then unplug your Bluetooth dongle.

Unfortunately the situation is unchanged.

The same dongle did work with Max2Play...

I am not interested in the Jivelite interface, and beside that M2P kept
disconnecting from the network.

I guess you must turn on BT from CLI.. Are we sure all the needed
packages are installed?

Re: [slim] 9 y old slimdevice SB3 died

2015-10-19 Thread gian

hi,

I was very sad when one of my SB died because they are not easy to find
even on eBay.

Then I started to explore a replacement with a Raspberry, Squeezelite
and Hifiberry DAC.

I am very pleased with the result: you lose display and remote, so you
need pc or smartphone handy, which is not a problem for me.

On the other side, you can have addons not possible with a SB: in my
setup I added a USB thermometer to monitor my room temp (it's a country
house I use on weekends) and bridged a wifi AP to the ethernet cable.

The sound is just great, the DAC has superior specs than the original
SB.

Total cost around 100E, with Raspy 2 and DAC Pro.

Re: [slim] Good Squeezebox alternative?

2011-12-03 Thread gian

Mice are for everybody, SBs are not, they are too complex for most
individuals.

Actually, my first attempt to build a SBS was aimed to learn Linux
playing around during the holidays in 2006. Thanks to SB, I have now a
window$ free home and office!

Also, hi-fi is for some people, video is for everybody.
Just look at how many (real) hifi dealers are still in business in the
last 20 years.

My aim with SB, was finding a bridge between my quality hifi system,
and internet radio and music library.

I listen more to radio than to my own library, but don't even know what
SB.com is all about, I am pretty happy listening to national broadcasts
from all over the world.

That said, I don't think that Logitech is the best company to manage a
niche business.

I hope the original Slim Devices founder will get it back..

Re: [slim] Good Squeezebox alternative?

2011-12-03 Thread gian

I would like to add that, because it is fitted with a quality DAC, and
you can even add an external one, while somewhat inexpensive, the SB
leaves the door open to a high-end upgrade.

This cannot be an argument for those that are happy to listen to their
plain iPods, which are the vast majority.

About running a server at home, it can have many scopes: I use it to
backup my laptop, store pictures, music, security camera images, stream
video to the TV or other networked PCs, FTP, web, and SB server.

Re: [slim] Thank you Slim Devices.

2011-12-03 Thread gian

Slim Devices changed my life.

I have always been an avid listener, LPs, CDs, radio, and short wave
broadcasts.

Slim Devices brought short wave listening up to high end stereo.

I listen to BBC, France Musique or Radio Orfey from Moscow at CD
quality.

I have a few SB2, SB3, Radio and Touch.

I am very fond of the white SB3 I have with the Slim Device logo.

It was a pain to see it go to Logitech, they are too big to manage such
a jewel.

[slim] Netgear Powerline adapters

2009-07-28 Thread gian

hello All,

I have a couple of Netgear ethernet Powerline adapters that work fine
with an ip camera connected.

In this location I cannot run an ethernet cable, and is just too far
from my wireless AP.

If I connect a Squeezebox, after a while it will disconnect from the
server complaining cannot find Squeezecenter

If I ping the camera from the server, I get values between 20 and 230
ms.
Maybe the SB needs quick, constant replies?

Is there a solution, or should I give up the idea of having music at
that location?

Re: [slim] Hard drive failures

2008-07-28 Thread gian

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50299

Question: How often do you have hard drive failures of your music
server?

- 1 or more a year
- 2 or more in mutliple years
- Never
- All the time

well, first off I use a cheap entry level server from HP (240 euro,
+disks) with mirrored sata drives. Software mirroring is fairly easy to
setup and well documented with Ubuntu Linux.

Then I have a second Ubuntu box in my country home, so if either should
fail or get lost (houses are made to break into...) I have the other
one.

I keep them synchronized with an USB portable drive from my Windows
notebook, using Samba. This makes a third backup of my flac library.

Couldn't stand to rip them all AGAIN!

Re: [slim] Bad experience upgrading to SC7 (pops and cracks and pause)

2008-07-27 Thread gian

after further investigation, I found that I had severe crack pops
listening to Virgin Radio Classic Rock, but neither my ripped music
database, nor other radio channels such as BBC radio 3 behaved like
that.

The VRCR url that CRACKS is:
http://mp3-vc-128.smgradio.com/

Since I have another Ubuntu box running SS6.5.4 in my country house, I
ssh'ed my playlist folder and found that the URL was:
mms://wm.smgradio.com/vruk_vc_hi

This works fine.

So far, the Sun is shining again on my Squeezeboxes...

Re: [slim] Bad experience upgrading to SC7 (pops and cracks and pause)

2008-07-26 Thread gian

although I was warned not to fix things that ain't broke, I moved to SC7
for SS6.5.4 because my Ubuntu 6.10 did not support a new printer and had
to go for 8.04.

Well, now I have the same problem pops, cracks and pauses.

Since I have a high end stereo chain I almost fainted hearing these
cracks fearing for my tweeters. Had to jump out of the bathtub to save
them!

Has this issue been fixed or should I revert to 6.5.4 right away?!

Also, my playlist are no more usable with SC7.
Has the format changed?

I have no evidence, but everything hardware is unchanged, so I guess

[slim] should I move to v7 ?

2008-06-11 Thread gian

Hello All,

I am happily running SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Debian - EN -

Give me one good reason to move to SqueezeCenter 7...

I listen to my ripped CDs and radio channels, and do not want to

I do not think I really understood what's behind Duet.

Is it just a different way to manage the music library, moving the

How does the sound compare?

New features?

Re: [slim] Audiophile wishlist

2007-06-13 Thread gian

Sean,

I didn't really mean to have SD mod my SB, rather that I would buy a
new, improved Squeezebox. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'd prefer spending $800-1000 for an original Slimdevices' project,
than have mine modified by someone else.

This Super SB might just lack some Transporter features, such as
connectivity, so that it does not harm its sales.

About buying better speakers, you may think that my Infinity RS 7K,
being more that twenty years old, should be ready for retirement. Well,
no. I have been listening a few days ago to new speakers in the 5K euro
range, that were FAR from approaching their sound. I guess I must go
for 10K euro speakers, but quite frankly, I don't feel the need.

[slim] Audiophile wishlist

2007-06-11 Thread gian

Hello All,

I post here (and not in the Audiophile section), because I think it's a
general issue.

I know that there are many mods to improve the SB's sound.
On my part I have no knowledge/time to do it myself, and I am not
really willing to let my SBs be teared up by other hands than
Slimdevices'.

So, why not prepare a *premium* version of the SB, incorporating all
mods and priced half way to the Transporter?

I admit I won't go for the Transporter because I love *sooo much* the
SB looks, but I would be interested to improve the sound.

I wonder if I'm alone here...

cheers,
-GianLuca

[slim] Player settings, number of options

2007-05-08 Thread gian

Hello All,

I have two servers, which should be identical because built with the
same procedure:

SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1
Server IP address: 192.168.1.124
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 4.1.15-Debian_1ubuntu5

On one server, the drop down list in Player Settings has 18 options, in
the other much less. Formatting, for example, is missing.

Can anybody solve the mistery?

Well, I forgot to mention the two servers are in two different towns...
N.1 is at home, and n.2 at my country home.

So, Squeezeboxes are the same, servers are built on same Ubuntu with
Slimserver Debian... I expect to find the same options on the two
players...

btw, do YOU have Formatting under Home/Player Settings?

[slim] SD acquired by Logitech

2006-11-05 Thread gian

I was not happy to learn that Logitech acquired Slimdevices.
I don't see anything that match between them, beside the fact they both
work on digital material.
SD is a model for its quality hardware, lean organization and
outstanding support.
The website design, the user forums and the wiki is something that
competitors should only try to match.
Logitech, on the other side, is an icon for cheap hardware with no
support.
It's really sad.

I have a wish list for SlimDevices, being a happy owner of 3
Squeezeboxes.

Why don't you build a SLIM car stereo, with just the FM radio, a SD
slot and an USB slot, a good power amp, all in a standard DIN
enclosure.

I would buy two tomorrow morning, one for my car, and one for my boat.

[slim] Re: Wireless range

2006-09-08 Thread gian

Hi Ross,

I just installed a simple USR antenna with 5db gain, and I get a
sufficient improvement in the signal. In this moment is 62-68%, which
is a noticeable improvement on the 36-41% I had before.

To add some confusion, I tried three 3Com APs I had in my office with
the new SB3 just arrived. Two of them are the same model and fw
revision, but one is much stronger than the other.

It seems not possible to draw conclusions about wireless range,
everything seems so unpredictable...

[slim] Wireless range

2006-09-01 Thread gian

Hi All,

I started a thread a couple of weeks ago about signal strenght.
My SB2 seemed to be much deafer that other wireless devices I have, and
I could not use it at my bedside, 'cause it was more distant from my AP,
with large wall in between and a marble staircase.

To add that, someone stated that SB3 had 30% less reception than SB2,
so I felt on a dead end.

I decided to purchase two SB3s anyway, and I'm happy to say that my SB3
is much more sensitive than SB2, and it works fine placed in my
bedroom.

To give some figures, I get 33% on my SB2 and 70% on my SB3.

I am planning to replace the SB2 antenna with a longer stud, but would
like to know if the insides of SB2 hide any trimmer or is there any
tinkering one can try to inprove wireless range.

regards,
-Gian

this thread is getting interesting, I never had a chance to measure
such vital information about my home... ;-)
The sitting room is 9 by 12 meters, with a thin wood and glass door 3.7
meters high, 2.5 meters wide.
The AP is just outside this door.
58% is measured when the AP is in straigh, unobstructed view of the SB,
at 10.5 meters.
Don't think that, in this situation, outside walls, be it paper or
granite, can matter at all.

Hallo, All,

The IP address for this player is: 192.168.1.5:23917
The ethernet MAC address for this player is: 00:04:20:05:b8:5c
Wireless Signal Strength: 33%

Placed in the current location, the music stream has no hiccups, but if
I move the player in my room, it won't hear the AP, won't show even the
SSID. My notebook still shows 4 bars out of five, there.

I so wanted to buy a second one for my bedroom...

cheers,
-GianLuca
