Re: [slim] Anyone tried both Android and iPeng? Which do you prefer, why?

2011-06-16 Thread jeebers

I've used iPeng on a 3G iPhone, and SqueezeCommander (SC) on a HTC
Desire HD, both quite extensively.

There's not a huge amount between iPeng and SC IMO - iPeng probably
shades it on 'slickness' (although this may be a comment on iOS vs
Android really) but there's very little in it . The most recent release
of SC made it a lot more iPeng-like, and was a big step forward.

Functionality-wise, iPeng has the advantage of having a player
built-in, but SC has the download-to-phone feature, which I'd really
miss if I didn't have it. I could never quite get my head round
sync-ing on iPeng, but I find it easy on SC, but to be honest I think
that was me just being a bit thick.

Speed-wise SC feels quicker, but that may not be the case on a newer
iPhone.

So, all in all, I wouldn't let the remote control app be your deciding
factor - both are very, very good and, if you haven't used one before,
will come as something of a revelation. The main decision to make is
iOS vs Android (not wanting to open a can of worms...)

Without meaning to sound flippant I think the answer to this one is, er,
get an iPod! There's at least one app on the store already which does
exactly what you're asking for (although I haven't used it) and iPeng
will add streaming functionality in a future update.
There's no way that Logitech would be able to compete with an iPod /
App combination at a reasonable price, let alone with all the other
functionality you get in an iPod Touch / iPhone.

Another +1 for foobar, although I prefer to use the Album Gain setting
on SBS. I find that Smart Gain adjustments, when playing individual
tracks, sound too noticeable, even though it is doing exactly what it
should. e.g. going from a full-on techno track to an acoustic track,
with both peaking at the same volume, just sounds wrong to me.

Each to their own, experiment and see which you prefer.

Re: [slim] Should I buy an iPhone?

2009-07-20 Thread jeebers

I've just got hold of an iphone in the last couple of days and initial
impressions are good. It's a very nice piece of kit, if not the
life-changing experience some of the acolytes would have you believe.

iPeng works very nicely, and the email / web browsing / phone functions
are all pretty good. Maps is great, and the last.fm / facebook apps are
pretty slick (if that's your thing).

I've set up a separate library for iTunes to use and I have to say,
having only used iTunes briefly before, that it is a horribly confusing
and non-intuitive piece of software. Maybe it's just familiarity and
it'll grow on me, but I've found it very awkward to use - I would have
expected it to be as simple as pointing it to a directory and letting it
go - it wasn't. I think I've got it working now but we'll see.

Luckily, the MP3 function was pretty much the last thing I bought the
iPhone for...

So yeah, all in all I'd have to say go for it.

Re: [slim] Help with volume normalization/ReplayGain

2009-03-06 Thread jeebers

It's worth noting that a lot of people (myself included) find that even
when playing random, individual tracks, album gain is the best setting
to use.

Track gain makes the loudest point of each track equal. This means
that the loudest part of e.g an acoustic guitar track will be the same
as the loudest point of a full-on hardcore techno track. Personally I
find this sounds odd, and album gain gives a more natural volume
levelling.

Re: [slim] Announcement Squeezecenter 7.2.1

2008-10-24 Thread jeebers

Thought I'd share my experience with upgrading to 7.2.1

All is working fine now, although it was the first time that I
encountered significant problems when upgrading. I think it is related
to / the same as this bug -
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8272 . I uninstalled 7.2
rather than install over the top (for reasons I will go into shortly)
and skipped the SqueezeNetwork registration. MY SB3 then refused to
respond to the Press Brightness to upgrade firmware prompt.

The reason I uninstalled first is that for *every* SS/SC upgrade bar
one (I can't remember which one I'm afraid) the installer has frozen
when trying to install over the top of a previous installation. It
always freezes at the Creating Directories stage - I think it's this
bug - http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9698 . To be honest
I've probably not waited as long as 1.5 minutes to see if it continues,
maybe I will next time...

EDIT - XP Pro

it is, the audio quality is quite good. I've also heard good things
about iRiver players, and I believe there may even be some older (and
possibly discontinued?) models out there with digital outputs.

I use Rockbox on an old iRiver H140 (upgraded to a 60GB drive), and the
sound quality is very good. It has an optical out if that floats your
boat. If you're happy without colour screens, don't mind it being a

of course, it is discontinued, but ebay may be your friend.

Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here

To whom it may concern:

You've got a couple of typos on the Squeezebox Controller and
Squeezebox Receiver links on the right hand side of this page:
http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_overview.html

Thought you'd like to know!

radio/music services, but at least it's a one-stop shop for
 broadcasters.

Did you know one of the redundant server farms for SqueezeNetwork is in
Europe. We really do want to make it work, and work perfectly, for
 everyone.

Thanks for the reply - good to know the European capacity exists, now
all we need to do is sort out the licensing. Can't see that being a
problem... ;-)

Actually, it is already far more than a world-band radio. It connects
you to music services like Pandora, Rhapsody, Live365, RadioIO, and now
Slacker Radio. It also allows you to store your personal music
collection in an MP3tunes music locker*, for access whether or not your
 computer/server is available.

Basically, it's an IT-less, always-on, everyman version of SlimServer.
About the only things you don't have are FLAC / ALAC support (*MP3tunes
allows only compressed music files), and local plug-ins.

And we're doing a LOT of work in the SqueezeNetwork area, so you'll see
it continue to improve and evolve.

 -= Jim

I know you already know this, and it's not meant as a dig, but Pandora,
Rhapsody and Slacker are US-only, therefore meaningless to the rest of
us.
I understand the reasons why, and I know it's not Logitech / SD's
fault, but I do hope that some of the SqueezeNetwork development is
focused on providing alternative, comparable services for non US
owners.

Re: [slim] Brand new Squeezebox supplied with used/faulty ac lead (UK)

2007-10-04 Thread jeebers

Empgamer;232519 Wrote:
Well, ordered my first SB3 on Sunday 30th Sept from DataKits and it
arrived yesterday. That's the good news.

The bad news is that whle the SB3 and remote APPEAR to be as new the
mains lead certainly does not appear to be. It has what looks like
magnolia paint on both the plug and the cable and it also has scratches
on the plug, as if someone has taken a screwdriver to it (albeit there
are no signs of it being opened)!!! The other question it also raises
is whether I can be confident the SB3 is new and not a refurb or
whatever and is not also used or damaged in some way. It may well be
that the power unit was dispatched in that condition although that
seems less likely, if it was there is a QC issue somewhere. That said,
the outer box was hard to open, as if it had not been opened before.

I've phoned Data Kits and left a message on their answerphone, tried
their webchat (no agent available) and mailed them 3 times. I await
 their reply.

One way or another I have been sold something which is either used, a
refurb or subject to some poor QC and I certainly intend to sort it
out. I have advised my credit card company to deal with this if the
need arises and also plan to contact Trading Standards. Poor show.

I have also mailed Logitech Customer support and one of the guys has
already kindly offered to supply a new lead if the re-seller won't sort
it. My only concern though is that I'm not sure I can be confident that
 the SB3 itself is OK.

Not sure what kind of a reputation Data Kits but I'm certainly not at
 all impressed!!

Have a look at the thread below for some other peoples experience of
datakits. Not generally brilliant. To be honest you're lucky they
even delivered it.

You might also want to google Datakits customer service if you really
want to scare yourself...

 Hi

Lee from ProgressiveAV here (we're Logitech's UK distributors for
Squeezebox and Transporter). The answer to this question is *key*.

To date we have not supplied Datakits with any product and if the unit
in question is Slim Devices branded it is certainly aged stock,
probably sourced in the US, and warranty processing will be handled via
 Datakits.

Would appreciate knowing the branding of the product and also the MAC
 address.

 Lee.

I'm glad to hear you don't supply Datakits - they are shockingly bad
and I'm not surprised to hear of another story of problems with them.
I originally ordered my SB3 from them and eventually had to threaten
Trading Standards to get a refund.

I have no idea whether they are doing anything dodgy re: importing or
not, but they certainly are very poor at customer service, and as
Empgamer is finding out, are incredibly difficult to get hold of.

FWIW I have several thousand tracks encoded at Q8 using the standard

As Michael says, Replaygain is what you need. I've added replaygain to

It's good, but I'm afraid not perfect, as there still are volume
differences occasionally. So while Replaygain may allow playback volume
to be adjusted so the peak volumes are consistent, it's not the same as
 normalising -my perception- of volume.

 I don't understand why :(

Yes I've also noticed the occasional time when volumes don't seem to
match. I'd say it's around 95-98% effective, but it does seem to
struggle with certain genres - dub in particular.

It's still a massive improvement though.

Re: [slim] Still possible to buy SlimDevices (not Logitech) SB3 in UK?

2007-08-08 Thread jeebers

Hate to tell you this, but I had a bad experience with them.

I ordered a SB3 from them, they took my money and I got an email
telling me it had been despatched. This was inaccurate, as they didn't
have any in stock (the next day they were showing an instock figure of
-2) - they didn't answer the phone, reply to any emails etc etc,
despite a LOT of chasing from me.

I eventually got them to cancel the order after threatening to take
them to Trading Standards. Do a Google search on them and you'll find
plenty of similar stories.

I'll drop you a PM with the email address of someone who finally sorted
things out for me.

Re: [slim] How do you use your Squeezebox/Transporter?

2007-06-14 Thread jeebers

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36061

Question: When you listen to music, do you connect to Slim Server or
SqueezeNetwork?

- a) 100% of the time to Slimserver (on computer or NAS drive)
- b) 75% of the time on Slimserver / 25% on SqueezeNetwork
- c) 50% of the time on Slimserver / 50% on SqueezeNetwork
- d) 25% of the time on Slimserver / 75% on SqueezeNetwork
- e) 100 % of the time on SqueezeNetwork

I went for 75% SS 25% SN,

I use SqueezeNetwork mainly for Pandora (we still get it in the UK) and
the odd bit of internet radio browsing. I use AlienBBC and Last.FM a
fair bit, but that's via SS. I'd certainly give Rhapsody a go if it
became available in the UK.

With a library of 20k+ tracks, I've usually got something to listen to
locally, but SqueexeNetwork is brilliant for those times when you just
can't make a decision! :-)

Re: [slim] Shipping to United Kingdom

2007-04-20 Thread jeebers

Don't buy from datakits.co.uk!

I tried to get my SB3 from them - they took the money, told me it had
been despatched, and then ignored numerous emails when it didn't turn
up. Effectively they said it was in stock (+ despatched) when they
never had any in the first place. I eventually got my money back but
only after I threatened to go to Trading Standards. Google them and
you'll find plenty of other people who have had dreadful service from
them.

I eventually got my SB3 from www.advancedmp3players.co.uk and the
service was top-notch. Well worth the extra £10ish they charged.
Amazon have always been reliable in my experience too.
