[slim] Easy way of Having Music on several Disks

2011-05-24 Thread jimbo45

Hi all

Having looked at the excellent Multi-Library plugin I still found this
a bit Overkill and it does need the music to be tagged whereas I have
a LOT of FLAC music not all of it tagged.

So the EASY way (Windows) is simply in the main music folder is to
create Shortcuts to the other folders on different (including
Networked) drives

For instance I might have my main Library on Disk H:\Audio

Now I might have a collection of BACH keyboard works on Disk E in
E\MUSIC\BACH_KEYBOARD

so in the primary library just create a shortcut to
E:\MUSIC\BACH_KEYBOARD

Now when you browse your music folder with your squeeze controller you
will see an entry for BACH_KEYBOARD. When you select that it will give
you the listing of the music in the folder on DISK E.

Bit of a work around but its simple.

On Linux you can do the same - just create SYMLINKS

Cheers

Re: [slim] Squeezebox ( MySqueezebox.com) DOWN!!!

2011-05-24 Thread jimbo45

Hi there

The value of the squeezebox.com service is probably a moot point anyway
since most people I know never use it.

You can still access FREE Internet Radio services etc using your LOCAL
server and the correct URL's which you need to save as favourites
(enetering them manually is a real pain --save as favourites gets round
the problem).

The other advantage of using your LOCAL server is that if you route it
through a PROXY you can bypass regional restrictions on content -- such
as if you want English Premier League Soccer on BBC R5 Live you normally
have to be in the UK -- going via a proxy and your local server bypasses
this restriction.

Re: [slim] Sonos is better than Squeezebox in Denmark...

2010-02-18 Thread jimbo45

Hi there
Sonos better than Squeezebox is an absolutely STUPID statement --
different tricks for different markets.

It's like saying a small Smart Car is better than a decent BMW or IPOD
type bud headphones are better than a pair of Bose Noise cancelling
'cans.

The SONOS system is HIDEOUSLY expensive -- true it's considered the
Rolls Royce of this type of application - but the squeezebox system is
the best bang for buck BY FAR -- the quality isn't that far off the
Sonos system either -- plug the duet into a decent amp (with or without
DSP's in it) and it still sounds impressive.

The RADIO also is a very nice piece of kit -- my main grumble was that
I had to buy it wothout the re-chargeable batterry -- almost a MORTAL
SIN for this app since this radio is just ASKING to be carried around.

Works very well indeed for what it does.

If I could affford one I'd buy the SONOS system in an instant -- but my
budget doesn't run to that.

I DO like the squeezebox system a lot --in spite of one or two little
quirks in setting it up from time to time.

Cheers

Why not stick to the old Engineers advice :

If it ain't broke -- Don't fix it.

Of course if you want any of the new features then a different issue -

back a little and get the early adopters to do all the work and only
upgrade if opinion out there says its worth it and the application is

[slim] Windows 7 -- Please allow use of LIBRARIES feature

2010-02-18 Thread jimbo45

Hi there
To the Software developers -- For Windows 7 users the Library concept
makes it really easy in defining a Library and then being able to have
the components - such as Music tracks etc put on ANY DISK (or disks)
in your network --making multiple disk handling totally transparent to
the user.

This means you can organize libraries on different disks such as jazz,
Classical, Opera, Heavy metal etc etc etc.

Using the squeezebox system as is you get a Music Folder option.
Thismeans a standard directory in Windows which is restricted to a
single drive.

I think Linux users have an advantage here inb that you can mount
directories to a mount point so you can get a tree system
structure.

Anyway if you could make use of the Windows 7 Libraries feature would
be a great improvment.

Hi there
Thanks -- what a simple tip --Why can't I think of things like that !!

Windows 7 presents the Library fine to apps running on Windows 7 -- but
say you share an XP or Linux system with Windows 7 then you'll only see
the Disk Volumes and not the Windows 7 Library unfortunately.

Your tip was good. Thanks again

[slim] Assigning fixed IP addresses to RADIO etc (NOT THE COMPUTER)

2010-02-18 Thread jimbo45

Hi there
is there any way to assign fixed IP addresses to a Duet / Radio running
on a LAN

I'm often testing stuff remotely as well and with a router for example
you often need to Port Forward to specific machines on your LAN. For
example you want to access a HOME computer from work via RDP (Windows
users) then you need to port forward port 3389 to a specific machine on
your local LAN at home.

Now if my computer is down and I've re-started the Squuezebox devices
before re-booting the computer the squeezebox devices Grab the IP
address that I've assigned to the computer with - predictable results as
you can guess.

Even if you assign a fixed IP address to your computer it doesn't stop
the squeezebox devices grabbing IP addresses if you start them BEFORE
your computer.

It's not really convenient to ensure all the squeezebox devices are
turned OFF before re-booting the computer.

On a LAN with a lot of testing (I'm running 5 or 6 Virtual Machines as
well on this LAN) I really would like the squeezebox devices to have
their own IP addresses to avoid a lot of silly networking problems.

BTW a lot of people having connectivity problems can usually solve
these by switching off their squeezebox devices, restart their router,
reboot the computer and THEN switch on the squeezebox devices.

[slim] Music Library - spanning more than one Disc volume

2010-01-26 Thread jimbo45

Hi all
This is probably more of a Windows problem (I think in Linux the
problem can be avoided via symlinks).

When playing your own music the controller (or Radio as well) has a
Music Folder setting which is say D:\music on a Windows machine.

If I want to now add another volume say on E:\ music I have to change
the settings in the server. Not a very satisfactory way.

Now in Windows 7 there is a Library facility -- you can add as many
volumes as you like to a Library - including networked volumes.

However Windows XP / Vista doesn't have Libraries.

So the question is as follows

1- for Windows 7 will the server software be modified so your Music
Folder can be a Windows 7 Library

2 For other Windows OS'es is there some way of adding extra volumes to
the music folder such as d:\music;e:\music;f:\music

With a large collection I need to have it spread out over more than one
disk -- MySQL doesn't have problems with dataspeace spreading over
several volumes.

Perhaps this is easily done -- I'm not a computer guru -- just a poor
user.

I like the whole squeezebox concept however -- much cheaper than the
sonos system and sound quality is fine (especially with 24 bit FLAC /
WAV playback).

Thanks all

Re: [slim] The competition is catching up and some surpassing Squeezebox...fast!

2010-01-26 Thread jimbo45

Hi there
Sonos units are Very high end - and quite wallet busting too.

Squeezebox does exactly what it says on the tin, is affordable, and
while some people have a few problems the vast majority of users I'm
sure are EXTREMELY happy with the products.

The only mod I'd like say on the Radio would be a USB connection so I
could plug in one of those little 320 - 500 GB WD passport disks and
play music from the locally attached disk without needing my computer
to be running.

I do my scans on-demand because I usually want to listen to music right

nobody else is using the squeezeboxes, so it isn't an issue.

So it looks like you found your problem. Now you can relax and enjoy

Hi there
the main problem with computer performance is usually SLOW DISKS --
normally not a problem when streaming audio but when scanning MySQL is
used as your DB is updated.

This isn't an inherent problem with the server -- it's always a shame
but most people buy rediculously overpowered CPU's (QUAD's for example)
and load and loads of RAM when all you really need --especially for a
server is just some DECENT FAST HDD's.

For some apps you might need a QUAD processor --that's another issue -
but for any sort of server you need FAST DISKS.

[slim] Why so much negativity. I LIKE the squeezebox products I have

2010-01-17 Thread jimbo45

Hi all

Why is there so much negativity on these products -- from what I can
see 99% of problems are related to incorrect network setup or Broadband
bandwidth issues.

OK some of these Network problems can be confusing to Non computer
techies -- especially if there is an unseen IP address conflict - but
usually the devices connect fine FIRST TIME.

With any relatively new technology there will be teething problems
--and I will agree that the setup and operation needs to be made more
Idiotproof - but it will come I'm sure.

A lot of people have problems starting a new computer that they've just
bought from a store so I'm sure some problems will always occur with any
technical product.

Yes the main Server has been down from time to time --but not very
often -- the dropouts are often from the Radio website itself -- such
as BBC R5 and the SKY NEWS Isleworth recently - but that was due to
these sites being massively overloaded due to the events in Haiti
recently.

Anyway here's one user in spite of initial teething troubles who is
VERY HAPPY with the system and am going to get the Touch when it is
available in the UK.

I already have a Squeezebox DUET and a RADIO (which I use daily).

Re: [slim] Best audio format for streaming wifi

2010-01-16 Thread jimbo45

Hi all FLAC is fine

BTW FLAC is a PERFECT backup for your CD's -- you can using NERO and
the MEGA codec plugin re-create an Audio CD image should you need it
again which you can then mount as an ISO.

Gracenote etc will retrieve all the CD info just like the original --
so it's a perfect backup too.

The best way in ripping CD's to FLAC is to use something like EAC
(slower) or Winamp. Both these will incorporate tags.

I keep my library in blocks of 100 CD's -- each CD is titled and then
the tracks are written in the CD title folder.

I've ripped around 1000 CD's at the moment -- got about another 500 to
go.

No probs playing on Squeezebox duet or Squeezebox Radio -- I might even
get a Touch later -- but for a lot of purposes I LOVE the radio --
really NEED the re-chargeable battery however -- that would really make
the device a PERFECT piece of kit for a round the house system.

2010-01-09 Thread jimbo45

Hi there

DRM and Proprietary formats are BAD - you are foever locked in. I'm
against adding this format.

Squeezebox is great in playing FLAC and if you are a real audiophile
you can get VERY HIGH QUALITY DRM FREE stuff from here for excample (up
to a whopping 24 bit 192 khZ BTW -- far far in excess of normal CD sound
16 bit @ 44kHZ.

http://www.linnrecords.com/index.aspx

FLAC is OPEN SOURCE and is LOSSLESS. If you need say MP3's for Ipods
etc you can also convert FLAC to MP3 for that purpose -- it's not
difficult with cheap storage to have FLAC as your main library and MP3's
for Ipods etc.

Re: [slim] Recommendation for Free Remote Desktop

2010-01-09 Thread jimbo45

Hi there
RDP will be fine on the old XP computer note however it must be XP

XP HOME doen't have RDP as a Server but only as a Client -- although
if you look around the web there are some work arounds for XP HOME.

I don't recommend logmein -- as you are then dependent on yet another
outside system for access to your machines - and some workplaces are now
stoppling access to these types of services as it bypasses their

RDP Server part doesn't work for VISTA or Windows 7 Home Premium

[slim] Ipod like device wanted next please

2010-01-06 Thread jimbo45

Hi all

I LOVE the Duet and Radio. Now what I'd also love is a small Ipod sized
player which could pick up the audio stream from your server which we
could listen to with a pair of headphones.

The current controller is far to big and bulky for this purpose - also
the battery life isn't that great either if you are away from the
charger for a longish period.

Maybe a new controller could be designed which would serve also as an
Ipod.

One of the HUGE advantages of the Squeezebox system is that I can play
FLAC files directly, and another of course is that you don't need an
internal storage medium for your music.

Re: [slim] BBC Football Commentary

2008-09-30 Thread jimbo45

You CAN get round these scumbag lawyer restrictions stopping people from
listening to BBC football commentary provided you can log on to a server
in the UK. If you have a colleague in the UK or you are from the UK and
currently overseas set your HOME computer up as a home server
If your remote machine is Windows enable RDP (remote desktop
connection) on it and open the relevant ports (can't remember the
correct one but google RDP)
On the remote machine connect again via RDP to your home server. If the
IP address is dynamic - no problem use no-ip (FREE at
http://www.no-ip.com) - also for Linux users.

Logon to your home server, enable sound transfer to remote computer,
start Windows Internet explorer / firefox and then you can listen to
the BBC radio content without a problem.

For Linux similar procedure but you probably will need something like
tight-vnc to access the remote Linux GUI.

I travel a lot and this works for me every time when connecting through
the Hotel's Wireless network. Bandwidth these days is more than adequate
in most places for vocal audio streams.

Cheers
