Well-behaved. All OK!

Technically not a good idea, as you will be effectively shorting
together the L and R outputs - it probably won't, but MIGHT damage the
player's output drivers.

You need at least a passive mixer in the cable, with a resistor in each
core of the L and R signals, BEFORE they are shorted together.

Re: [slim] NAS SSD Drive...?

2015-03-18 Thread mooblie

I guess the reason that people are suggesting you won't see much/any
speed benefits from an SSD in a NAS is that the music server will
(probably?) be connected to your music player by 100Mbps or maybe 1Gbps
Ethernet (and you won't reach those nominal transfer speeds anyway:
probably reaching only half the headline speed). Anyway, you don't need
-speed- for music playback do you?

Even at 96kHz (which I doubt few are listening to anyway) the

Re: [slim] Is there a simple way to adjust L/R balance on Squeezebox?

2009-05-06 Thread mooblie

Moonbase - I was about to add my vote for this enhancement, when I
realised I already have the same request for closely related, but
slightly different issue. I quote from my addition to the request here:
QUOTE
Can I suggest an enhancement to this enhancement? (one I was planning
to
propose anyway, but fits both technically and logically with this one):

* Include a Stereo/Mono selector in the Audio Settings *

Reason: in applications where only one speaker is used, or the two
speakers are
NOT arranged as a stereo pair, then a mono signal, fed to both outputs
is
needed. Two speakers very widely separated, or in different areas
would
benefit from mono signals being fed to both.

I use a SB2 on a room divider, with one active speaker facing into the
kitchen,
and the other active speaker facing into the dining room. Hence the
need for a
mono pair of outputs.

This stereo/mono switch should obviously be placed in the signal path
BEFORE
the balance control proposed above, so the latter still has the desired
effect.
UNQUOTE

Actually, if the reason is firmware then I'm optimistic it CAN be
done - FW updates happen quite regularly.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox not working on ethernet, works on wireless

2008-12-28 Thread mooblie

Have you tried BOTH:
(a) a cross-over Ethernet cable, and THEN
(b) a non-crossed-over Ethernet cable?
Do neither work?

(BTW - I use a Netgear DG834GT - and other Netgear switches - with no
problems.)

2008-12-28 Thread mooblie

That works (i.e. gives the Squeezebox a name it uses itself - also
visible to SN) but it's obviously not quite fully DHCP/IP legal (or
even visible) as the name still doesn't appear in the Attached

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox 1, 2, and 3 Classic

2008-12-26 Thread mooblie

You might find, as I did, that SB2 is preferable to SB3, as:
(a) you can fit a (bigger) external antennae = better Wifi
connectivity,
(b) much cheaper (from eBay!), and
(c) better form factor (for my installations, anyway)
(d) - maybe you even would like a choice of body colours!

Functionally, SB2 is exactly the same as SB3.

[slim] BBC Station Names disappeared?

2008-12-13 Thread mooblie

I'm in the UK, using the standard BBC radio links (not Alien BBC) and
upgraded recently to SC 7.3 (and the associated firmware update for my
SB2s).

However: now, on using SN to play BBC stations, Now playing now
displays the full stream name -mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio2/
nb etc. etc.- rather than what it used to show, i.e. -BBC
Radio 2- (admittedly not very informative, but a little easier to
read).

Is it me? Have I missed something here?

Re: [slim] Volume control

2008-12-07 Thread mooblie

After raising a bug about this, I was asked, reasonably enough, to just
retest with current SC version 7.3. So, I did that - and the volume
response has already been fixed! - see attachment.

It now runs (correctly, I believe) in 0.5dB steps down from 100 down to
1 (i.e. with output gain from 0 to -50dB) - following the correct linear
path on a log/lin plot. (The final value of 0 = mute.) It now provides
the fine control necessary when running the SB2/3 into a sensitive amp
at very low volumes e.g. for background music.

Sorry to have wasted everybody's time for reporting my testing of
obsolete software! And thanks to the team who responded to the bug so
quickly!

Re: [slim] Volume control

2008-12-05 Thread mooblie

Yes, but the ear responds logarithmically, so for each, change by say
10 Squeezebox volume steps I would want a the same relative change in
loudness, say 10dB i.e. approximately a doubling.

That's NOT what we've got.

Specifically: going from 90 to 80 gives a ~3dB change, going from 20 to
10 gives a ~10dB change.

Aside from the figures: do you not find this yourself: the changes are
large at the quiet end, and small at the loud end?

Re: [slim] Range of selectable volume

2008-02-23 Thread mooblie

Sorry to raise an old thread, but it seems a relevant starting point.

I am using SqueezeCenter 7 and two Squeezebox 1s (firmware 40) with the
0-100 volume control. However, the relationship between the volume
setting and perceived volume output seems all wrong to me:
(a) not much happens as you drop from 10040, output drops from 0 to
-10dB
(b) reasonable control between 4010, output drops from -10dB to -25dB
(c) far too coarse control between 100, output drops from -25dB to
-50dB

I have measure the output and plotted this in the attachment, where the
(linear) volume control setting from 0-100 is shown against the (log)
audio level output from 0 to -50dB - see Actual Respose line.

You can see that, whereas it should be a straight line relationship in
this lin/log chart, it is actually a curve, indicating the volume
control drives the control voltage of the voltage-controlled gain
section linearly, whereas it should be driven logarithmically.

I would suggest that (as shown by the Preferred Response? line) the
output should drop by 0.5dB for each volume step - linearly throughout
the range.

Is there a plug-in to fix this, or would a software update be needed?
Having only 100 values, a simple look-up table would suffice, surely?
Any volunteers? Anybody agree with me? :-)
