[slim] My squeezeboxes refuse to play. Are they mad at me?
Today my SBRs just stopped playing music. The manner in which they are not playing is completely perplexing. I was playing music this morning and I noticed that on a few songs there were 'skips' like in vinyl where it just jumps ahead to a later part in a track (without the sound of the the needle hitting the grooves, of course). I noticed it on three instances in a couple hours, even once on a Napster streaming track. A few hours later i tried to play a track from my library and no sound came out. This happens with every one of my players. Here's the bizarre part, on the progress meter every time I'd hit play on a track it would show it as 2:32 and count forward from there. If the track is 4:55, it starts at 2:32 of 4:55. This happens on every track I attempt to play... local files, Napster streaming, Pandora... whatever. Any song, any player starts at 2:32 and no sound. If I leave it running it keeps going on, never advancing to the next track. The crazier thing is I even reinstalled Squeezecenter to try to fix it and it still behaves the same way. I upgraded to the newest SC the day it came out and until today everything has been flawless. Any ideas??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64842 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] best remote?
Heres my $.02 when it comes to the ideal remote. There is no such thing as a perfect remote its always a compromise in one manner or another. Ultimately, the deciding factor should be how you plan to use your remote. The OP specifically asked about running a SB so I certainly wont get into video applications or other areas. The iPhone is the right remote for me because I find it the easiest way to get to the music I want. I can get to the exact song I want in about five taps and a few swipes after launching iPeng. Its very quick. With the SBC, its the same amount of clicks, but using the wheel for scrolling takes much longer and I often over- or under-shoot and end up needing to back out again before getting it right. It doesnt seem like it would, but it really takes much longer. The SBC is also too tall to put in my pocket and much more fragile than the iPhone. With a silicone sleeve and screen-guard the iPhone is extremely sturdy and you can easily toss it in you pants or jacket pocket. Ive never dropped my SBC but dont imagine it would do that well with it. For me, another huge advantage to the iPhone is thats its already in my pocket almost all of the time since it is my mobile phone too (though I agree with pippin that it is only a mediocre phone.) This basically means I hardly ever have to go hunting for the remote. I dont have any use for a tablet PC or large screen (7-12 inch) device. Yes, it could make the actual operation a little easier and offer nicer graphics, but it would be something that would have to be actively carried around the house. I have nine zones on three floors and wouldnt want to lug something like that from room to room (or buy nine of them!) In terms of text entry I almost never find the need to do it. I dont use the search function. I have around 1500 albums and have no trouble remembering which Artist and Album to look in to find a track. As far as the lack of hard buttons on the iPhone, it is actually an advantage. It simplifies things to have buttons only where you need them and allows for a larger graphic screen relative to overall size of the remote. The only thing I miss is a hard volume control. iPengs volume slider can be hard to activate. The SBC wins on that front. If the iPhones hard volume could control the SBs volume one day it would fix that issue. The main advantage of the SBC at this point is that you can use it as a walkman with headphones. If you would use it in that way often, you really need to get one. Regarding the regular IR remote, they wouldnt do me any good since I almost always control my music from across the room (or even in an adjacent room.) If you tend to sit right in front of your music source it of course would work fine. Still, it would be slower that the SBC or iPeng and you wouldnt get all the nice album graphics. :o) Ironically, the iPhone is pretty much a pain to use for most other things but just seems to make the ideal Squeeze system remote IMHO. And the iPeng software definitely has room for some improvement but it still is very, very good at doing its job at this point. And with software, improvements can always come in future updates. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58492 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

As for my pain comment I was specifically referring to the web browsing (iPhone or iPod Touch) which is slow and very crash happy. Re: [slim] Ancient Squeezebox can't find SqueezeCenter
Actually it's the opposite. SB1 only supports WEP where SB2+ supports WPA. I have a SB1 too and it has always been kind of glitchy to set up wirelessly. The most current firmware available on it is 40 so you're fine there. Try rebooting your router right before you setup the player. Also, I've found setting it up right next to the router so the signal is close to 100% is helpful. You can then move it to wherever you want it to settle. It always seems to take a few tries with that self-rebooting thing and other miscellaneous nonsense before it finally connects to slim server. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58356 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Maybe it's just because I'm a bit of a SqueezeGeek :-) but that review seemed to be riddled with little inaccuracies. Most glaring was the issue of the Controller's range. It obviously doesn't poop out at ten feet from the SBR one floor removed. It doesn't even communicate directly with the SBR except during initial setup. I have a strong wifi router and can be at the other end of my house and down a floor from my furthest zone (about 80 feet) and still control every player so I think that comment in the review does a great disservice to the Duet system. Doh! That is what I was doing wrong, tapping just the sync icons. I think I was doing it too fast as well. I guess it takes a second for the screen to repond and I was just tapping the squiggly marks on players C, and B and then the mark on player A before the x's showed up and it would sync two players and a second later unsync them again. Ironically, doing it this wrong way works fine for syncing two players (which is the most I typically do) because you don't end up tapping a sqiggly that becomes an x. [slim] Adding a Popcorn Hour to my Squeeze system
I currently have a Media Server in my second floor hallway closet. It runs SC which runs nine SBR zones which are controlled using iPenguin on two iPhones and an iPod Touch. Id love to ditch my manual DVD player (Panasonic DMP-BD35K) as the only place it could be placed is a cabinet above my built-in TV which needs a stepladder to reach. And also for the obvious further conveniences I really want to store and access my DVDs digitally as I do my music using Squeezy. Ive looked at a lot of options and really like what Ive read about the Popcorn Hour A-110. For those of you who own or have used one (or a similar product) Id much appreciate your advice. This is my Media Server info: Dell Optiplex GX260 Processor: Pentium 4 (2GHz) Memory: 1.25 GB Music Storage Drive: 500GB/16MB Western Digital Video Storage Drive: to be added? Network Controller: Intel Pro/1000 MT Router: Linksys WRT54GS I want to connect the A-110 via the existing Ethernet in the cabinet. The A-110 with shipping is $235(USD) which seems very reasonable to me. I could either put a 1TB HDD to store the vids in the media server or one in the A-110 itself. My server uses regular sized ATA drives while I think the A-110 uses SATA and can accommodate notebook drives as well. I dont know if these things make any sort of practical difference in what Im trying to do. My current SD-DVD collection is archived as .ISO files on an external 500GB backup drive. Also, though I only own a few Blu-Ray DVDs now, I plan on purchasing all new releases in BD format. Im sure Ill need to purchase a BD drive for my main desk computer to rip the discs to the hard drive. Any suggestions on the best drive to get? And will I need to get software such as SlySofts AnyDVD or CloneDVD or something else to do this (or is there freeware available?) And would putting the drive locally (in the A-110) make any difference than storing the source material in the server upstairs? Im trying to figure out all of the things Ill need (and what it will all cost) to make this idea a reality so any input would be truly and greatly appreciated. iPeng is my favorite by far. I don't think you'd be disappointed at all. Re: [slim] best stand-alone seakers to connect a SB3 to?
Try not to write off the audioengine5's based on the 'boominess' reviews here without listening to them first. I find that as long as you don't place the speakers too close to the rear wall or room corners then they deliver a tight and musical bass. I've listened to almost all of the speakers mentioned by the others here and really like the 5's. I especially find the midrange very sweet and smooth which I find makes even harsh recordings sound better than on super-high resolving speakers. They are a good bargain IMO and definitely worth an audition. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46115 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] My Duet (Receiver) is *ALWAYS ON*!!!!
My receiver does the same thing. The light goes off when I first turn the unit 'off' with the controller. A few minutes later the white light comes back on (though not as bright as when the unit is in 'on' mode). It seems like it should be one way or another. Either the light just dims when you turn it 'off' or the light goes off and stays off while in 'off' mode. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46189 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How to avoid the 'click' when a track starts
This is pretty interesting because when I first got my Squeezebox1 I tried digital output via coax and optical into my Onkyo tx800 and experienced a truncation of the first 1/2 second of audio at the start of every new track. If the song began with a drumbeat, I'd only hear the second half of the beat. I switched to analog output and all was fine. When I received my duet I tried digital output again with the SBR and still have the same issue. I don't get a click, like you, but maybe that's just the different manner in which my Onkyo's DAC has trouble locking at the start of a signal. Unfortunately the only equipment I own with digital outs are my SBs and the only DAC I own which converts external signals is the Onkyo so I can't compare with other devices. Still, your issue definitely sounds like a DAC one to me. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45605 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPeng vs. SBC
Many thanks for the cool software pippin. One more question. When I'm in 'now playing' view and tap the tracklisting icon at the top right corner, it only show the first 8 tracks on the album and doesn't seem to be able to scroll through the remaining songs. Is there a way to see the rest of the songs? -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45573 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] iPeng vs. SBC
I currently own a Squeezebox Controller and five SB players. I would like to add an additional SBC to use downstairs so I can leave my current one upstairs. However I've been reading about Pippin's iPeng software for the new iPods and iPhones and am very curious since when I played around with them at the Apple store, I found the ergonomics to be very elegant in function. Playing music on the iPod Touch was certainly faster and easier to me than using the SBC's current interface. I am considering getting an iPod instead of that second SBC. This is my question: Could I get some feedback, pros/cons, thoughts, etcetera about iPeng versus the SBC from people out there who own and use both? This would be much appreciated. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45573 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

My SBC has been the same as yours. I've run the update a dozen times in the last few weeks and it always says: Version: 7.0 r2097 [EMAIL PROTECTED] #60 Fri Mar 7 11:24:65 PST 2008 Unfortunately I have no answer for you. Re: [slim] iPeng vs. SBC
Thanks for the input guys. I have borrowed an iPhone to try iPeng out. It really is very cool though it is a little bit slower than the SBC. This might be dumb of me, but I can't seem to figure out how to control the SB receiver's volume though in iPeng. The iPhone's volume control changes the ringer volume when in iPeng mode. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45573 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Wanted: used slimp3
I purchased my Slimp3 (which I still use) 6 years ago. I bought it to replace my Turtle Beach Audiotron (remember those?) which was a royal pain to use (but very, very cool back in late 2000!) I was lucky and sold that unit on eBay for the same amount I bought it for. The arrival of Slimp3 was my excuse to get rid of the Audiotron since after going the route of using a home Digital Music Server I just couldn't handle going back to playing CDs exclusively :-) By the way, I still think the Slimp3 is the coolest looking compared to all generations of the Squeezebox. Re: [slim] Does Logitech Streaming Systems know the meaning of Customer Service?
Hi All! My first post here. re: Customer Service I must say, I've been a customer since 2001 and one thing I always noticed about Slim Devices was how incredible their customer service is. My experience is that they really go above and beyond. If you call (650) 210-9400 and speak to a salesperson I'd be very shocked if they didn't resolve your problem very quickly. I think it's easier and quicker if you call and speak to someone as opposed to e-mailing. That's just my two cents. -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44576 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Support issues can take longer time, but a simple order status request shouldn't have to take over a week. haunyack, your mail to the orders mail address probably got lost somewhere, but I'm sure someone at Logitech is going to spot this thread as soon as they wake up in US. If they don't, try the orders mail address a second time or use the phone. The forum is really not the correct place to get the status of a specific order. I agree with that as well. It's just that haunyack seemed really distressed about his client not having a remote and I just thought a brief phone call would be the quickest way to resolve the issue... and again, my experience with Slim Devices customer service by phone has been exemplary. Sometimes we get so stuck on a specific (such as not getting an email response - which could have a host of reasons behind it) while ignoring the easiest solution on priciple. Why get yourself all worked up over 8 days waiting for an electronic response when you can speak to a living, breathing person in real time for an immediate response? That's all I was thinking. No disrespect to haunyack's frustrating experience which is valid. :-) -- ptrainer ptrainer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44576 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
