Why are you ripping 44kHz source material at 48kHz? That's going to
cause a resampling of all the data which could easily lead to what
you're hearing (IMHO).

Re: [slim] Is the SB3 still available?

2009-11-30 Thread radish

I see what you're saying but I think you're conflating reliability with
ability to be repaired. I would expect that your TP will still be
working happily for years to come, just like your Compaq. However, if
you're unlucky and it does break repairs will be tricky due to parts
shortages - again just like your Compaq. There's nothing really that an
OEM can do about that if their parts suppliers decide to stop
production.

If it's really 12-13 years old, then you can forget being able to
replace pretty much any of it with new parts. Back then cards were
typically ISA or VESA, both long abandoned. If you're lucky and it has
PCI slots you're still facing problems because PCI now is not what it
was back then. Of course the CPU (and it's socket standard) are long
gone, likewise whatever memory standard it used (30 pin SIMMS?). The
motherboard won't be replacable, and you'd need an adapter to replace
the PSU (which you may have to make yourself!). Even hard drives will be
tricky as small PATA drives are hard to find these days, and the BIOS
won't support larger ones (if it's MFM or something like that you're out
of luck entirely). However - the one piece of good news is that 3.5
internal floppy drives are still available!

Re: [slim] Volume Levelling

2009-11-30 Thread radish

I'm not sure what you mean by radio-style volume levelling - maybe you
could explain? As far as I can tell you'd always need some concept of
how loud a specific track is to be able to adjust the gain properly,
which is what RG does. Or do you just mean a compressor?

As for crossfade - what file type are you using? Also crossfade and
gapless playback are different things. Assuming you're trying to get
actual crossfading and not real gapless, what happens when you enable
crossfade?

should have flushed the DHCP bindings so that apparently is not the

Lease expiry doesn't typically cause these types of issues (in my
experience most client devices aren't polite enough to stop using an IP
they can't renew!). However, I think it would be worth setting up the
player with a static IP to rule out anything like that.

Other than that the fact that it always happens at the same time points
strongly to an external cause - as the player doesn't know what time it
is :) I'd look at things like machine restarts, power fluctuations, any
kind of environmental change. Even temperature change?

How many rooms are we talking about? I got the impression it was the
existing room plus 2, hence why you needed three pairs of speakers
total. In this case you're looking at 2 new players (total $400), not 3
- the SB3 stays right where it is.

If you do want to go with speakers etc you're talking 2 pairs of (I
assume) ceiling speakers, lots of wire, and 1 or 2 new amps. That'll
probably come to at least $400 anyway. Plus installation if you're not
handy enough to do it yourself.

It _can_ play AIFF native, but my understanding is that all lossless
formats other than FLAC are transcoded to FLAC by default (can be
disabled) to save bandwidth. Might be wrong about AIFF specifically, I
don't have any of that file type.

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2009-10-08 Thread radish

Hokie02;469069 Wrote:
What do you mean that if it's not showing an IP that suggest DHCP is
failing? If what isn't showing an address?

lan_network_address. If you're using DHCP it should be set
automatically to something like 192.168.1.x. If you're not you have to
set it manually, but it has to be unique - you can't set it to an
address already used by the server.

I set lan_network_address=0.0.0.0 and then after I reset it I'm still
stuck on blue and when I plug it back in to do another conf 1 and list
it's then set to some other address like 169.254.80.xxx.

That's an autoconf IP, it means that you have it set to use DHCP (which
is fine) but the DHCP is failing. That usually means it's not connecting
to the network properly (WEP key error I would guess). The fact that it
works wired would back that up.

I'm pretty sure I have DHCP (how do you know?)

ipconfig /all would say DHCP enabled: yes on Windows.

If I do set those, they should both be the same at 192.168.1.1 correct?
(that's what ipconfig says for default gateway, IP4 says 192.168.1.4).

Then that sounds right.

So if I set lan_ip_mode to 0 then I use those values and if I don't
then those values can be empty correct?

Yes but you can't copy the IP, it has to be unique (but of the form
192.186.1.x). If you're using DHCP on the network but you want to set
one manually it has to be outside the DHCP range to avoid collisions. To
keep it simple, use static everywhere or DHCP everywhere.

You also said I lan_network_address to the same as
 squeezecenter_address at 192.168.1.4 but I set lan_network_address to
 0.0.0.0?

I was just reading what you said in the last line of your post.

What should I be setting squeezecenter address to?

The server's IP.

Am I supposed to be using that 2nd IP address for anything?

No

Recommendation - disable WEP (it doesn't do any good anyway) and try
the setup without any network security. That will prove the basics are
working, then enable WPA and use that. I've often seen issues with WEP
key errors where the device think's it's connected but it isn't (which
would explain the blue light).

 primary_dns:192.168.1.1, and lan_network_address: 192.168.1.4 and
 nothing. Any advice??

The network settings don't look right. If it's not showing an IP that
suggests DHCP is failing. Try setting lan_ip_mode=0 (static IP) and then
set gateway/dns etc as appropriate. One thing I noticed is that you set
lan_network_address to 192.168.1.4, but that's what you also have
squeezecenter_address set to - that can't be right!

don't (as I don't need to). The reality is you do have to upgrade SC to
7.4 if you're using a Radio, and it makes sense to if you regularly
switch between SC and SN (as otherwise you'll be upping and downing the
fw all day). So yes there are people who will have been prompted for an
update, and I assume the majority of them are fine (as I've been running
7.4 fine in test for ages), but it does suck when you're one of the

Speaking as a 7.4 tester, stuff obviously got through the cracks, we'll

thing better for me is all control in one remote (or a Receiver that did

I guess I'm in the minority but I quite like the SBC. It's certainly
not perfect, but if I want to control one of my players and I'm not in

Re: [slim] ? rec HD TV on PC, best way? linux? win? mac?

2009-08-28 Thread radish

If you're getting your tv from cable you really need cable cards. And
that means a pre-built WMS box (at least it did last time I checked).
Personally I use HD Tivos, they're very reliable, not particularly
expensive and work with cable cards pretty well. One thing to bear in
mind is that cable companies are technically backwards, and if you're
trying to get them to hook up something they're not familiar with you'll
have a hell of a time. Path of least resistance works for me :)

Joe Sixpack listens to his ipod on a JBL speaker dock and considers it
high end. He's not going to pay more than $100 for anything which
streams, and it better do video at that price.

Thinking that the only way to make a profit is to target your product
to the lowest common denominator is a mistake, often a fatal one. Sure
volume is higher, but so are support costs and margins are tiny. I have
no more insight into the inner workings of Logitech than anyone else,
but my impression is that they see the SB line as a somewhat premium,
audio focused line for people who care a bit more than the average Joe
about music. There are plenty of manufacturers who don't cater to Joe
who do pretty well - I mean just look at Sonos. They might argue they're
easier to setup (I have no evidence either way, just going on marketing
spiel) but at the price they charge Joe Sixpack isn't going to give it a
second look.

Because most people know where the major buttons (volume, etc) on their
TV remote are by touch. Having to look at the screen to locate the
button makes the whole thing much more awkward to use. It's why (IMHO)
Harmony did so well - combining the customisation options of a screen
with the practicality of physical buttons. Even Pronto (the flag-bearer

Re: [slim] Slower performance with squeezebox than expected

2009-08-04 Thread radish

The performance of Browse Music Folder will always be related to the
number of items in the folder, so yes, reducing that will help. However,
as signor_rossi mentioned, you're missing out if you're only using BMF.
The whole point of the scan is to populate the db so you can
browse/search it instead of the filesystem. That should be _much_ faster
than BMF, particularly with large directories.

As for scan time, yes it's slow on an (average) NAS. There's no magic
bullet to improve that, but for tips/suggestions ask in the 3rd Party
Hardware forum. When sqlite and the new scanner are in place things will
be better (people were seeing maybe 30% improvement during testing) but
that could be a way off. What I (and many others) do is just not use a
NAS. A small PC is cheaper (much) faster than a dedicated NAS, and
doesn't have to use much more power. It takes my $100 server 20 mins to
scan 20k tracks.

Also, I had a look at the file conversion options in SC and found the

 r.

Lossy WMA is supported natively on the SB (v2+ only I believe),
lossless is transcoded (by default to FLAC).

In terms of network usage, FLAC is variable but as stated typically
700-1000kbps, WAV/PCM is ~1400kbps.

whether the middle display line is missing or not, depends on the
brightness of the display (as set by the remote, or as preset in various

no middle line. Least dim - middle line appears !! Are there separate
feeds to the display for each brightness level ? Is it possible that
this is just a ribbon cable internally that needs reseating ?

My guess (and I'm no electronics engineer so it really is a guess!) is
that different brightness levels == different voltages in the display
driver. It's possible you have a component which is only working at some
of those voltages.

but it just seems so tedious.

I think it appeals to the obsessive-collector found in many of us.
Serves no obvious useful purpose other than to collate what we have
collected, I could imagine a similar site for rare audio recordings
going down well with certain members of this community :)

[slim] Squeezebox on GDGT

2009-07-16 Thread radish

In case any of you are gdgt.com users, they've just added the
appropriate category for Squeezebox. All the players are there, although
they're split between SD and Logitech. Links

http://gdgt.com/logitech/browse/home-theater/digital-media-players/
http://gdgt.com/slim-devices/browse/home-theater/digital-media-players/

I was sad not to be able to check off slimp3...maybe I should get one
as a collectors item to complete the set ;)

Or, if your server is running linux you could get crazy and try
something like UnionFS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnionFS

Does the SB Controller (with the nice display) work the same way? Or
does it do more local calculations/user handling?

It's broadly similar, in that the menus and available options all come
from the server, but it handles user input, animation, etc locally so
it's not totally dependent on the server or network connection.
Whichever player you're controlling is though, so if you have network
issues you could still have control glitches.

Just as an FYI, all of the (wireless capable) players can act as a
bridge in this fashion.

I'd recommend contacting support, they're in a better position to
diagnose hardware issues.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 2 SB2 Remote

2009-07-09 Thread radish

Any SB remote will work with any SB, so yes the backlit one will work.
The Boom (mini) one will work too, BUT it doesn't have a brightness
button so you can't use it to trigger a fw update.

FYI, the red lines are normal and not a fault or a sign of a problem -
they're intrisic to the VFD display. You should be able to see them if
you look closely enough.

Re: [slim] Why no Transporter Thread at the highest hierary level?

Does anyone have issues when using a SBC with the transporter? It seems
like the two don't like each other and eventually the SBC just refuses
to connect to the transporter. The transporter's control freeze when
trying to control it with the SBC. It's fine as I have a universal
remote control for my primary system, but still a little annoying.

I use an SBC with my Transporter all the time, no issues. Which makes
sense, the SBC has very little clue as to what kind of player it's
controlling, I can't imagine how it could be less reliable with one kind
than another.
