I don't think you even need to make the directories the same, just tick the use iTunes box. ALAC is now open source anyway, so one of the two main reasons for using flac falls away (the other being native decoding). -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93971 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] My wife is forcing me to use iTunes
The easiest way of all requires making a pact with the devil I converted from flac to apple lossless (yeah, yeah, get over it, and yes I did keep a backup copy). Everything is now in iTunes. Any stuff I want to buy can be ripped into lossless, but to be honest, life's too short and I don't listen in such a critical environment, so most of it is downloaded, and from itms, so yes, a bit lossy (and doubtless ruinously expensive etc). Anyway, what it means is that I can buy a song on my iphone (or wife's iphone) and it will automatically be added to the library and magically appear on LMS. I can't tell you how much hassle that saves me. -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93971 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Thank you Slim Devices.
Welcome newbie ;-) I bought my first SLiMP3 about 8 yrs ago (guesswork, I didn't google it). Was a toss up between that an Audiotron(!). Still have it, in a box somewhere. Amazed at howit just worked, straight out of the box. Since then, an sb1, sb1g, sb2, 2xsb3, 2 radios, a boom a duet later I still have most of them, in daily use. 99.9% of problems have been caused by my meddling or being an early adopter. Been a great ride, I still love them, but can't help but think we're in the twilight years now... Re: [slim] What's your favorite device for remotely controlling your Squeezebox?
Having just added a controller for a 'hidden' installation, I use that, along with ipeng the Logitech app, which is a bit more lightweight, but for the main part does what I need. I leave the power saving features off on the the controller, and so far I've had no wake up issues at all. Of course the battery life isn't great, but it spends the majority of time in the dock anyway so it's not been a problem so far. Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...
Have been around since SLiMP3 days, currently running that, an SBG (don't hear so much about them!), SB2, 2 SB3's, a Boom, 2 radios a controller. Have always tried to keep things simple, and where possible, wired (have cabled my house). Only ever had 2 problems, one with the SuperDateTime plugin, which is brilliant when it works, but unfortunately seems to need to be updated quite often to keep in step with server releases and changing weather feeds (neither the fault of the developer, but annoying nonetheless), and several issues always related to new releases, which probably add features I'm not going to use anyway. My painful lesson is to not bother updating without a good reason as I get grief from the family when it doesn't 'just work' as they're so used to it. Having been an early adopter and gone down the flac route, am now re-coded to apple lossless iTunes - I know the quality of iTunes new purchases isn't as good, but the convenience of being able to download music on any machine in the house and have it available to the squeezeboxes in a very short time just works for us. As always, keeping things simple is best. -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89411 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

you also get lurkers like me who've been here from the start and got through most models - some get passed on, but mostly the system just grows. I currently have 6 in daily(ish) use, the oldest of which is a SBG (not many of those around!). I still have a slimp3 in a box kicking around that I think I'll use in some project or other - it works perfectly, but just sort of got superseded. I use a mac mini - it's as quiet as any pvr I've owned and has spdif connection for multi channel audio and you can pretty much connect it to anything for a display (one way or another). As it comes with a remote and front-row built in, it's pretty much good to go out of the box. All I did was rip the dvd's and store them on a linux server in another room (where slimserver runs) and share the folders. -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40689 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?
I use mac the ripper to rip stuff and dvd assist to get it to play through front row. Other than that a couple of scripts I hacked together to make sure the network connections reconnect at startup and wakeup and that's about it. dvd assist puts a trailer of a few seconds on the front of your movie (pre menu) which isn't a big problem. (OK, I know that's not exactly how it works, but it is how it appears). It is basically a quicktime lead in that fools the mac into playing from a folder instead of an actual dvd. The only functionality you lose is that you can't go back to a movie that you've watched previously and carry on where you left it. All the disc menus etc still work though. As the whole setup is small, quiet and largely childproof (in as much as these things can be) the WAF is quite high too. -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40689 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Suitability for use in professional installations
I run a mix of slimp3 through to SB3's and the only one that *ever* gives issues is the wireless one, so I'd agree there. I also run a dedicated linux box that just works. I never touch it. I also have a ups on the server and would definitely recommend it - short power cuts it rides through and longer ones you're guaranteed a clean shutdown. Given that it's running headless I think a clean shutdown is very important. With the setup I have, if anything goes wrong you always have the option of power cycling the server, and that is just about the only acceptable level of user involvement I'd like anyone else to have. I think the one thing that kills the pro-install is the ripping process - it's never not ugly. While I wouldn't condone Apple's 'own the whole process' ideology much, you can't deny that's a huge factor in their success. How you'd make it that simple though I don't know. -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35307 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Apple TV Competition?
Kevin, Like you, I use wireless for one of my squeezeboxes only - and it's the only one that ever gives me any trouble - and then not very often at all. It's a v1 squeezebox though so the buffer isn't so big. I think you're right about the iso issue in DVD assist. I bought the mac and started ripping afterwards so it wasn't really a problem for me. It may be possible to do a bulk convert, but I don't know how you'd feel about that if you've got a lot of stuff ripped (and/or use if for other things). There's some speculation about what the next version of front row might support, but my view is that Apple are so tight about their existing protection systems that they're not likely to allow you to play ripped content other than via some kind of iTunes import or similar. -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31559 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I recently bought a mac mini for the main functions of what apple tv would provide. Given the relatively small price difference and the huge difference in flexibilty I can't see why the apple tv would appeal to anyone with a technical background, particlarly as you have the remote and front row stuff as standard with the mini. Kevin - in terms of VOB support I'm using the dvd assist hack to fool the dvd player. It's slightly (but only slightly) tedious to set up but frankly works like a dream when you're up an running. For my own purposes, the wireless stuff isn't even activated - due to home improvements works (;-)) I have cat5e running around the house. All dvd's etc are ripped and stored on a linux box in a cupboard and the streaming works just fine. I've not found a problem with the core due performance to need the extra power - what sort of apps are you looking to run? (or is it just future proofing?) [slim] Re: mac mini Squeezebox?
I use a mac mini running headlessly and wired straight to the squeezebox. Have about 350 albums ripped at 320 mp3 (80%) and flac (20%). Takes about 45gb of the 80gb disc iirc, so depending on what format you use, it should be enough space, but you can always expand if you need to. I didn't rip on the mini so can't comment on that - I just copied everything on to it from my linux box at home. The mac issues the ip address to the squeezebox and I have no internet connection to it (it's in a holiday apartment). System is set to sleep so squeezebox wakes it up on demand - i.e. when there's actually somebody there! Didn't even need a crossover cable. [slim] Re: Wake up slimserver (Wake-on LAN) through wireless network
The mac is not connected to the internet, so I can't try streaming which would generate a different workload on the server. I've tried the hard drive sleep setting on or off but it makes no difference. The squeezebox is plugged directly into the mac with a 'standard' rj45 cable (not a crossover) - utilising the auto-sensing on the port. Don't know if that should make a difference though. The computer is definitely asleep - it goes quiet and the power light starts pulsing ;-) The setup might be a little unusual, but I'm building it to leave in a holiday apartment in France where I won't have connections or support. My 'main' setup at home runs 24x7 on a linux machine where I don't want it to sleep. -- xio xio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17891 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Don't forget the vu-meter screensaver on the sb2/3! But seriously, I have slimp3, sb1, sb1/g, sb2 and sb3 (full house!) and the only issues I've had with any of them have been on the 1 wireless sb1 which I sorted by getting a new router, resiting it and forcing compression to the box. I'm sure with the larger buffer on the sb2/3 it would never give problems, but as you're running wired anyway and it's a first foray into the squeezebox world, I'd think the sb1 would be a good start. The grpahic display is a lot nicer if you can get one with that, but I think (some) people worry too much about the aesthetics rather than just enjoying the music. The newer devices feel a bit more slick, but my slimp3 is still used on a daily basis without problems.
