Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2010-03-12 Thread ezkcdude

I just pre-ordered an iPad this morning. Clearly, it (and other slate
devices) could be a game-changer in that you can easily use the
SqueezeCenter web interface in its full glory, something that was
obviously not possible on smaller devices. Hence, the need for
applications like iPeng on the iPhone. Android has several apps, too.

In light of this new class of devices, will we see an iPeng
specifically for the iPad? Perhaps, with the larger format, there are a
whole new host of applications that would make sense. Any thoughts?

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2010-03-11 Thread pippin

Ok, I agree this has long been overdue :)

iPeng 1.2.1 has been out for a while now but the User's manual was not
completely up to speed with this release.

Now, this has changed. I'm happy to announce that the User's Manual is
now fully up to date with regards to iPeng 1.2.1. While completing the
1.2.1 version, we added some more detail and hopefully the readability
has improved as well.

Also, the new User's Manual is now available for download in PDF
format.

Like before, it's designed as an online manual, supports readability on
iPhone/iPod touch through an iPhone skin and can be reached using the
links in the App under Help.

You can find the User's manual at

help.penguinlovesmusic.de

Even if you are an experienced iPeng user, have a look and see whether
you'll discover some features you didn't know about, yet.

Have fun!

Currtently you have to play the station to do that.

This is brilliant, I can't believe it's taken actually reading this
comment to realize this is what I need. I'm currently running iPeng on
my 3GS, but there is something annoying about having the controller
software on my phone (sharing with others, etc.) A dedicated iPod Touch
is the answer.

Will iPeng run okay on the first gen iPod Touch? Any concerns with the

Exactly this. iPeng 1.2 requires iPhone OS 3.0. It depends about some
features and quite a few bug fixes in the OS that are only available
from 3.0 on.
So you will need to update the iTouch's firmware to 3.0 or newer to use
it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

It will run perfectly well on the 1G iTouch.
Only limitation is that you can't use the hardware volume buttons since
the 1G iTouch doesn't have them :)

It really makes most sense if you also use the Preserve Connection
option, because then you can use it without having to disable the screen
saver.
It's the unofficial feature since it doesn't fully comply to Apple's
HIG and also always changes the iPhone's system (or active) volume since
that can't be turned off, but it's still pretty useful.

What a pity. I had a quick look at Apple's plug for version 3.0 and it

Your remark that it actually improves on the old software softens the

Yes, I agree that's a bit of a drag.
I try to avoid unnecessary sw requirements (for example all of the

To be honest, I'd expect Apple to do the same thing with 4.0 and I'd

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-11-24 Thread pippin

Today, iPeng 1.2.1 got released on the App Store.

iPeng 1.2.1 is a maintenance release which primarily improves the
compatibility with Squeezebox Server 7.4 and fixes some errors but it
does come with a few improvements as well.
Improvements include:

* Better handling of context menus in SBS 7.4, especially including
the Add to favorites and Remove from favorites menus available on
the Squeezebox Controller to streaming service context menus.
* Better detection of #8222;hold#8220; gesture avoids accidental
triggering of actions;
* iPeng reconnects to the server by server name; this improves
automatic reconnection in DHCP managed networks, you no longer need the
Forget Last Server Option
* Status icons for Alarms and Sleep plus a lot of additional icons
for plugins;
* Support for Slide Show Artwork (e.g. in the Flickr app);
* Sorting of search results, Albums returned by Search now are
sorted as defined in iPeng's settings plus additional information for
the albums will be shown;
* If Play Single Tracks option is set in settings, the Play
Shuffled item in Playlists and Albums will be replaced by Play All
since Play All is not redundant in this context.

See the full list of bugfixes in 1.2.1:

https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/query?status=closedmilestone=Release+1.2.1

Have fun with iPeng 1.2.1!

Yup, that's the issue I've always been having with iPeng and SC 7-7.3.
Exactly :-) And cache flushing does not help.

With SS 7.4.1 I do not seem to experience this - which is really nice!

I do however, still feel that the app is a bit slow on my configuration
(Mac Mini, 1.25 GHz, music collection in 256 bit AAC format), even
though the UNIX command top indicates at least 20% idle time even
during the most demanding search'es.

In generally my CPU load according to the TOP command increases shortly
when pulling a lot of data from iPeng (especially if I do a MusicIP
Mix), load does however not exceed 80% and it immediately drops back to
5-15%, which is the normal load when just playing music. On the iPhone
iPeng is still showing Loading... long time after the peak. It
eventually finishes a few seconds later - but it makes it feel slow.

But it is MUCH better with 7.4 than it was before. Overall I am pretty
happy with the great work done by Pippin.

2009-10-19 Thread ajkidle

Apologies if this has already been asked. I looked for it and didn't
find anything.

I'm having trouble with the ADD mode. I want to add individual songs
to the end of my playlist, which I understand is what this is supposed
to do. Works as described for my local FLAC library, but does not work
with Rhapsody. When I try to add a specific Rhapsody track, the whole
album is appended to the end of my playlist. All the tracks that I
didn't select show up as having length of 0:00, the track I did select
shows up as expected. But when it advances to the next track, all the
0:00 get their real length, and it starts playing from track #1 of the
album I chose a song from.

Makes it difficult to create playlists... Any ideas?

I have iPeng Play single tracks set to ON. Also have
Squeezeboxserver set to play individual songs.

Running SBS 7.4, Ubuntu 9.04, iPeng 1.2, and iPhone OS 3.1.2.
Two SBR's and a Boom playing in sync.

Thanks,
Andy

 Thanks,
 Andy
Can you see details in a Playlist? This currently doesn't work for me,
which is probably a bug in iPeng.
I can reproduce the issue and from what I see it's a bug in Squeezebox
Server (unless it's intended behavior). The add command issues an
addall command.

OK, now I understand what you did :-)
just selecting single players out of a sync group to sync doesn't make
a difference, you always sync with the master.

Just to be sure: Did you probably use the main (big) power button to
turn the power off? That would turn off _all_ devices unless you disable
group control in iPeng's settings?
Or do you have set a synced power in SqueezeCenter's settings for
some of your devices?

Since I do not care much for applying genres to my music or browse by

pippin;470931 Wrote:

In iPeng, you see which device is the master from the order: the master
is the one at the top.

Now when I look at my device screen on iPeng, I see Master Bedroom on
top, then Living Room and finally Kitchen on the bottom of the list.

I do not recall the order when I first used 1.2 but it was probably the
same as now. I do remember that first I took Master Bedroom off sync
using iPeng and then was surprised that I did not have the option to put
it back in sync with combined 'Living Room, Kitchen'. Instead I just
tapped Kitchen and all 3 devices were then in sync. These were my only
sync changes using iPeng. This is when my problem of losing the sound of
my Master Bedroom SqueezeBox Classic (after turning off Kitchen
SqueezeBox Classic) first appeared.

I think that just choosing only 'Kitchen' in order to sync everything
again eventually caused the sound problem. The strangeness of not being
offered the combination of my other two units made me decide to solve my
problem by using Local 9000 on my computer instead of iPeng.

I am aware of several weird problems which depend on the sequence of
turning on and off synced devices on 7.3.X. This is probably one more
bug that shows in 7.4.

Again, this was just to bring this problem to your attention and
perhaps it would help another user in case he unexpectedly loses the
sound on a device.

I know you are working on a manual (hurry, hurry) which would make
things easier. For instance, what is the function of the large up/down
arrow buttons which show on each device on the device list? I tap them,
I tap and hold, but nothing happens. They appear on those devices that
have set volume. My only device that has adjustable volume is the Master
Bedroom and a volume control appears on that device instead of the
up/down large arrows.

Thanks again

I don't understand this one. Did you maybe use a plugin like The

between MySqueezebox.com and your server (there's an SC bug that
sometimes syncs devices if you do that)?

In iPeng you usually sync devices through Drag'n'Drop (by dragging one

The weird problems due to the sequence of turning on and off synced

fixed) and also show up in trying to alter player menus (it would be too

Thanks for letting me know about those large up/down buttons.

So OK - enough with Scotland and PLEASE come on home and work on the

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-11 Thread sflen

First off, thank you for a great program!

I have encountered a sync error. Background:

Snow Leopard 10.6.1, iPod Touch 3.1.1. iPeng 1.2, SqueezeCenter 7.4

4 Slim Devices - 1 Transporter and 3 SqueezeBox Classics. 3 of these
are always in sync and have been for the past 6 months: Master Bedroom
SqueezeBox, Living Room Transporter, Kitchen SqueezeBox.

While experimenting with your program, I took the Master Bedroom off
sync. Using your program, I then put the Master Bedroom back in sync by
tapping Kitchen. Your program then showed all three units back in sync
and there actually were in sync.

I then began to notice, for the first time ever, that periodically I
would lose the audio from my Master Bedroom. The info of the song would
continue to scroll but nothing came out of the analog outputs. I
discovered that every time I would turn off the Kitchen (all three still
in sync), within a few minutes, the Master bedroom lost its sound.
Repeatable.

I then went to my Intel iMac in Local 9000 and took the three units off
sync. Then using Local 9000 again, I first put the Master Bedroom in
sync with the Living Room and then put the Kitchen in sync with the
combined Master Bedroom and Kitchen.

Problem solved. I no longer lose the sound in the Master Bedroom when I
turn off the Kitchen.

Thought you would like to know and experiment with this.

Regards

I'll check.
Yet I don't believe this is an iPeng command. iPeng doesn't really DO
the syncing, it just tells SBS to do that, so it also can't really do a
lot wrong. This is very straightforwrd, it's sync player a to player b
period.

I'm seeing quite a few issues with syncing on SBS 7.4, too. Which kinds
of players do you use? Can you _reproduce_ the issue and what is the
sequence of things you are doing?
What kind of files are you playing?

sequence of events, and how I solved the problem.

I spent a lot of time in figuring out the problem and correcting it. I
will not start over again to re-create the problem.

No permanent errors and no real big deal. I just wanted to let you know
of my experience.

Again, thanks for a great program.

Regards

Genres-All Albums is expected to show all albums sorted by Genre, after
all you didn't select a Genre.
Genres-a genre-All Albums should bring up the albums for a genre

https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/OK, will do. Just did some
testing. Can see that while my iPeng is
loading, load on server is pretty low (approx. 83% idle, 1.33 GHz
G4).

Generally, I'm not aware that anything has changed on the
artists/genres query code so I'm surprised that it behaves different.
Genres have always been slow. It's not - it was the same problem with the
 previous version.

What I do: Genres - All Albums...and the result in 1.2 is literally
*ALL Albums*. Not good, because what I ultimately wish to do is to
shuffle all songs to listen to random stuff from a specific genre.

The good news is the contextual menu, which seems to work. Holding
down on a chosen Genre brings up a Play option. So this works for now.

Err... no? Problem is I can't test this right now since I don't have
MusicIP on my 7.3 server. It should be in the Album Context menu that
you get when holding an album. And in the TrackInfo menu you get when
holding a track within an album or on the current playlist or the
 NowPlaying cover art.
Is it not there? What do you see?MusicIP shows up nicely in the contextual
 menus everywhere. Only issue
seems to be that mixing is very slow (albeit, no load for MusicIP on the
server while mixing !?). But it works if you have a bit of patience. And
that is nice :-)

I'll btw. give 7.4.1 a shot...

very much liking the update - thank you.

There's only a couple of things I'd like to see: the buttons to take

a little bit larger - as i spend most of the time flicking back and
forth between the 2. Also could all the album art be chached on the

thanks

2009-10-08 Thread kesey

I invested in a 64 gig iPod touch last weekend, charged it up having
first installed iTunes 9 on my desktop, did a minimal bit of reading of
the iPod manual, and fired up the touch.

Next up was to download and install iPeng 1.2 and to figure out how to
use the touch and iPeng. Brilliant...there's a bit of learning for a guy
brought up on Windows (not to mind PCDOS) but once the touch interface
begins to make sense, iPeng turns out to be a treat. Well done pippin!

iPeng beats the living daylights out of the Duet, and makes the
possibility of buying the Squeezebox Touch much more likely.

All album art is being cached on the iPhone after you read it once.
It's not all residing in memory but as much as I believe iPhone can

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

For a combination of small file size and compatibility MP3 would have
been the best option.

For small file size, with a format that can be played natively by the
Squeezeboxes WMA was probably the best bet. But then you sacrifice
compatibility.

The proper answer though would have been to buy a new hard drive,
encode to FLAC and worry about encoding to lossy files only when you
really need the small file size.

If you were converting to lossless format, mp3 is the logical choice.
It's supported by just about everything out there.

However, as another poster suggested something lossless like FLAC would
be the way to go if you are ripping your collection. With the size of
HDDs these days it's not really an issue that it takes more space to
store and you can always batch convert later if you want to put it into
any given lossy format.

I'm using iPeng since it's available on iTunes store. It has changed
completely my usage of SqueezeBoxes... I've always found the Squeezebox
interface very limited -- such as browsing through a list of artists or
album on a single line display. And did not want to carry my PC in the
living room.

And then there was iPeng. It is all at once: convenient, easy, stable
enough, good looking, it shows the artwork, etc And now, my iPod
Touch can be put in good use even when I stay home.

Thanks for the good job!

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-06 Thread Sune

Hi there,

Long time, no posting from my side. It does not mean I do not enjoy my
Squeezebox iPeng. In fact I am actually using this daily (iPeng was my
main motivation for buying my original iPod Touch). It looks fantastic
(finally the home-screen-icon app. graphics that you've been longing
for :-). And I surely can control many more aspects easily and quickly.
Nice!

I have a few questions / comments, and do realise that I as usual risk
just having overlooked this...but here we go (using SqueezeCenter
7.3.2):

- Tapping on the left/right side of the dots on the now playing
screens does no longer seem to have any effect - choice or bug?

- I suffer from slow reaction when browsing artists or genres. Every
time I choose e.g. a genre, it is loading for a lng time before
showing something, then I choose an artist and the same happens. This
makes it slow and frustrating. Anything I can do? Would a bigger cache
improve on things? For my sake you can cache *everything* (iPeng is my
most important app, after all).

- I cannot find the MusicIP integration - is it gone?

- I experience, when browsing certain genres, that when I click all
albums, then I literally see all albums in my library - not the ones
belonging to the chosen genre. Anyone else experiencing this? Could be a
Server issue, although it works fine on the Squeezebox itself.

Cheers from Denmark - looking forward to being pointed in the right
directions :-)

No, as stated somewhere in another forum there obviously is not and

On the phones, what do you want to do differently? The settings within
iPeng should be local to that device.
If you want different server configurations I'm afraid you will need
separate servers.

Hi Pippin,

Ok, thanks for the ultraquick support :-) I will look where described.
I tried checking the help on the website, but did not manage to find
anything related to MusicIP, but guess I should have searched for
mixers in general. My bad. I will try tomorrow.

As for the Cache thing, sure. I do only have 7.000 tracks (all in AAC
format) so it is not a huge collection - hence, it should be possible to
cache everything. The music server itself is a bit old though (G4 Mac
Mini running 10.5), so it could be a server performance issue, I
guess...

Good night for now,

Another issue I have observed in 1.2 and with the prev. versions as well
(maybe a known issue).

After startup, when I go straight to the New Music page there is no
progress bar telling about updating cache. If I switch to the album view
it is shown, but goes away again if I decide to switch to the New Music

Should not the progress indicator be shown in any view that deals with

The cache is updated, as the cover art is shown in the end, but the user

The progress indicator has nothing to do with the cover art (other than
that cover art only starts loading after all albums have been cached).
Instead, it shows how much of the _page_ you are looking at is already
cached.
And it only shows up for pages that do actually become cached. These
are Albums, Artists and Genres. NewMusic is not being cached since it
typically only contains 200 albums which is not _that_ much for iPeng.

You select the edit mode (button at the top right).
Then you can either drag a player out of the group or you can select
the player (tap it and it will get a check mark) and then tap the
unsync button on the lower tool bar (broken chain symbol).

Works great with 7.3.1 - I am slow sometimes when things just work. Best
UI there is for the SB and the sole reason why I bought a iPod Touch in
the first place.

One minor thing that also was present in the prev. version. On program
startup, the status message area on the bottom of the screen says in a
quick sequence

1 No player connected
2 Your player was not found
3 and finally the player name

Would it not been better to just say Initializing or something
similar and then go straight to the player name?

Great update pippin! Love the improved UI and the all the context menus
on the playlist.

One request -- could you add an option to display album artwork on the
playlist. I play mostly dynamic playlist mixes and that is the only
thing I like on the controller that I can't see on iPeng. Otherwise
iPeng is definitely my clear preferred choice with this latest update.

Keep up the great work.

It is well worth the investment if anyone is still wavering on that

The problem here is, that you probably changed the Tab Bar (on the
lower end of the screen) while being connected to MySqueezebox.com so
the first item now defaults to i.
You probably can't remove it while being connected to SBS so please go
to MySB, exchange the i for something else and then switch back to
SBS. In 1.2.1 you will be able to remove the item also from SBS and long
term the way it should be is this:
 https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/ticket/134

Sorry, but if I've understood you correctly then this isn't it. I've
gone into MySB and the first item on the bottom toolbar is Favourites.
Interestingly though the MySB main menu also defaults to More, whereas
if I've understood correctly it should be Favourites as that's first in
the shortcuts along the bottom.

No, if you initially start iPeng, the main menu defaults to More,
that's the expected behavior since that's really the full main menu.
I'm not sure whether i needs to be the first item, but iPeng always
seems to open that one if it's present with a SBS, maybe because it's an
item that is not in the list of editable items

Fair enough. I guess then that's what I'm saying - I don't think it
makes sense for More to be the default, because you're most likely to
want to use one of the items on the shortcut bar. You've put them there
because they're the ones used most often...

2009-10-03 Thread EnochLight

Greetings Pippin!

Fantastic update; love it with 7.4 (despite 7.4's teething problems).
;-) That said, I found a couple of graphical glitches on mine when the
tutorials kick in. Not a deal breaker for me but thought I'd mention
it.

See the image below. This happened when I hit the reverse button at
the bottom of the tutorial when it was playing to see an animation play
over (by the way, you might want to add an iPeng setting to disable
animations and to slow playback down).

I'm on an iPhone 3GS (3.1) and Squeezebox Server 7.4 on Vista 32 bit
SP2. Did a clean install of SB Server and updated my previous version
of iPeng while sync'd to iTunes.

Cheers!

Good find!
Is animation playback too fast?
I had a lot of experimenting around this because I didn't want it to be
too slow (I don't want people to skip the animation, but of course it
should not be too slow.
My compromise is that the automatic progressing is disabled whenever
you manually go back or next so that you can decide on your own
speed.

Judging from the number of threads on the issue this seems to be a

Do you see your player in the server's web interface?
Are you actually connected to your server? Or does it show up under

If it's the latter and you are seeing this more often, please try
enabling Settings-iPeng Settings-Forget Last Server.

There are spelling and grammatical errors all over this application,
starting in the Welcome to iPeng 1.2 screen.

I'm sure there are.
Do you have some examples?

Rule #1 was to get it done in time, btw.

OK, reading it again I can see what you mean about the welcome screen.
_My_ Rule #1 applies, though, this was the very last thing done before
release.

What else did you find?

I am sure Pippin could have done it better in German.. I just use iPeng
for the functionality...

Have you ever read a technical documentation of any Industrial
electronics equipment (i.e. VERY expensive) coming from china? It looks
like english... but it ain't..

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-02 Thread hunta

Pippin, this is a really good release. Thanks for the time and effort, a
vast improvement over 1.1.2.

One thing though that I was really hoping for was the default screen
when viewing the main menus. When you click the left arrow from the Now
Playing screen, it always takes you to the settings page. In all
likelihood I'm going looking for more music to play, not change my
settings. I tend to browse by Artist or, possibly, by Album, so I have
these dragged down to the shortcut bar at the bottom.

Could it remember the page you were last on (between sessions too), or
failing that default to the first of the 4 shortcuts?

Hope this makes sense...

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-02 Thread luga00

Hi Pippin,

First time I've been able to use it for a while as I had to upgrade to
7.4 a couple of months back after the Slim team fixed a problem for me.

It all works fine except occasionally I find that I'm stuck in Now
playing mode (the three screen swipe) with no way to get out. The icon
at the top of the screen is missing and hence there is no way to break
out.

Just wondering if you've come across that before. I'm going to try and
reproduce to see if I can consistently make this happen as I'm not sure
what is causing this at the moment.

I've attached screen shots of the Now playing screens.

regards
Russ
