Well, after setting quite a few logging options to DEBUG, the only
additional stuff that appeared in server.log were these lines:

Code:

They occured at exactly the same time as the segfaults. So it appears
to be something to do with cleaning out some caches.

I'm not really inclined to bust a gut trying to sort this out - the
system is working fine and I was just curious if anyone knew how to
stop these segfaults.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm going to forget it and listen to
some music now!

2010-04-13 Thread jimwillsher

To the OP:

I'm running 7.5 on Ubuntu Karmic Koala x64:

Linux music.jimwillsher.co.uk 2.6.31-20-server #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar
12 05:40:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'm using a standard build of Ubuntu, no tweaking, andMySql was
installed by SC. The only plugin I've enabled is iPlayer, everything
else is default. I don't rebuild my library automatically, and I have
around 1 tracks. I've installed the ia32-libs package (otherwise
iPlayer is silent due to only x64 objects being installed). My Ubuntu
is headless, running under HyperV.

I do NOT get any crashes.

How similar or different is your system to mine? Might be able to
compare and help identify what's different?

My Ubuntu is much older (Hardy Heron), and I'm running a desktop rather
than server build:

Linux media-server 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Wed Apr 1 20:57:48 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux

My machine is a 32 bit processor (1.5GHz VIA C7), not a 64bit one like
yours. I'm also running quite a few third party plugins (Custom Browse,
Lazy Search, Other Players, Power Switch II, Power Save). And my
SqueezeCenter is pretty old (7.3.2). So out setups are quite
dissimilar.

ok, was worth a try. If it were my setup then I'd start with disabling
all the plugins. That way you can isolate it to a SC problem or a
third-party problem. Not for apportioning blame, but just to help
narrow it down.

OK, I've set various scanner and server logging to debug - we'll see

(In the meantime, after I had switched all alarms to OFF, the 7

Yep, looks pretty much identical: error 4 in perl, 7 times, separated
by 30 seconds.

Thanks for pointing me at the bug report - makes it obvious that
upgrading to 7.4.x or 7.5 isn't going to fix it.

[slim] Daily Squeezecenter crash

2010-04-11 Thread cliveb

This has been happening for ages, and it doesn't seem to affect the
normal running of the system, but I thought I'd finally try and figure
out what's going on...

I'm running Squeezecenter 7.3.2 on an Ubuntu machine. Every day (well,
every 24hours and 3mins to be exact - you could set your watch by it),
there's a segfault in squeezecenter-server. In fact there's a sequence
of 7 segfaults, one every 30 seconds. Then they stop, only to repeat
the next day. I note that the elapsed time for 7 failures 30 seconds
apart is 3 mins, so presumbly whatever it is that causes the segfaults
gets rescheduled for the next day after the 7 failures - hence the fact
it happens every 24 hours and 3 mins.

Clearly Squeezecenter (or perhaps a plugin?) is trying to do something
once a day, and gives up after 7 failures. I have Software Updates and
Library Rescanning switched OFF. Two questions:

1. What debug flags can I set to try and get more info about what's
happening?
2. How do I actually switch on the appropriate debug settings on an
Ubuntu installation?

Finally: please don't suggest that I upgrade to a newer version of
Squeezebox Server - the system is working fine (apart from this one
weirdness) and I'm not inclined to go through the hassle of updating on
the offchance it will fix this one tiny glitch.

I don't use the alarm feature, but your post prompted me to take a look
at the alarm settings. Although there were no alarms listed, the option
All Alarms was set to ON for two of my players (and OFF for the other
one). I've set them all to OFF, and we'll see what happens...

One other thing I forgot to mention in my initial posting is that I
don't use SqueezeNetwork. (As far as I'm aware I don't even have an
account, although it's possible I did create one a few years ago). The
SqueezeNetwork options are set to Integration=Disabled and Report
Statistics=No, so I don't think it's likely to be SqueezeCenter trying
to talk to SqueezeNetwork.

Re: [slim] Daily Squeezecenter crash

2010-04-11 Thread cliveb

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions (guesses?)

I was hoping that what needs to be done is to switch on the appropriate
debug logging. What I'm unclear about is how that is done. Do I just do
it via the Squeezecenter web interface (Settings Advanced Logging)?
And if so, which ones would people suggest might be worth switching on?
Does Squeezecenter need to be restarted after changing a log level?

Mind you, they are all set to error anyway, and presumably a segfault
is at least an error - but I see nothing in the logs corresponding to
the times of the segfaults. My guess is that the segfault just kills
the process, and it never gets a chance to write a log entry.

It's obvious from dmesg that whatever is crashing has a different
process ID each time. Anyone here know what daily procedures
Squeezecenter performs that it does by forking? That would at least
narrow it down.

I think you are going to have to bite the bullet and set debugging
level to DEBUG - very verbose, but it will trap things happening at the
same time as your seg fault. I'd start with the server and scanner
set...
