Clear, simple, accurate - no bullshit, evasions or acronyms. I guess there are common usages in the USA that don't conjure the same scenario, and that's where the confusion arises. Whichever - it's a sh*t when it happens, and there is plenty of it at the moment. Real shame to see people who are part of a community like this having to move on for whatever reason. Yes, BU = Business Unit. I think technically they are the streaming media BU. rant BTW, I love all of the euphamisms (sp?) for layoffs - RIF (Reduction in Force), workforce reduction, redeployment. Where I used to work the managers would get irritated when you would use the term layoff rather than redeployment or RIF. Well, it stems from the concept that in the UK, a -person- isn't made redundant, an -instance of a role- is. In other words, a role is found to have redundancy (i.e. multiple people doing it), so the redundancy is removed. Having said that it doesn't always make sense - in the current climate entire roles are being eliminated in the quest to save money. Anyway, why are you all assuming Mike was pushed? Maybe he was just made a better offer elsewhere - after all, web managers must be ripe pickings for headhunters, being so visible. And a better offer could even be less pay, but shorter commute or even you get to work with old friends. There are a lot of reasons to change jobs. I share your view, I wish all of them well. With all the RIFs going on, this is not a good time (and Silicon Valley is not currently a good place) to be looking for a job. It's too bad that people just disappear in the night, without any announcement or comment from the company or any of the various employees who are active here. But I guess it's necessary given employment law and practices, lest something said be viewed as tarnishing someone's reputation.
