1 a: exceeding what is necessary or normal (Superfluous)

Can't get much better use of the language than that! No longer
required; surplus to requirements; redundant. Clear, simple, accurate -
no bullshit, evasions or acronyms. I guess there are common usages in
the USA that don't conjure the same scenario, and that's where the
confusion arises.

Whichever - it's a sh*t when it happens, and there is plenty of it at
the moment. Real shame to see people who are part of a community like
this having to move on for whatever reason.

BTW, I love all of the euphamisms (sp?) for layoffs - RIF (Reduction in

The British have many odd expressions, and in this context they would
say that someone was made redundant. To me, that conjures up a mental
image of crowd full of such people who have been made to keep saying the
same thing over and over again. It's a silly expression.

Well, it stems from the concept that in the UK, a -person- isn't made
redundant, an -instance of a role- is. In other words, a role is found
to have redundancy (i.e. multiple people doing it), so the redundancy is
removed. Having said that it doesn't always make sense - in the current
climate entire roles are being eliminated in the quest to save money.

Anyway, why are you all assuming Mike was pushed? Maybe he was just
made a better offer elsewhere - after all, web managers must be ripe
pickings for headhunters, being so visible. Logitech are cutting jobs,
but I'm not sure we should do Mike the disservice of assuming it's
related.

I agree with you completely.

But it's not just the corporate-speak weenies who are guilty of
abominations against clear communication. Most white collar work
involves industry specific and technical terms and acronyms. People who
are unable to express themselves in simple language are all over, in
your country and in mine, in English and in other languages. These are
the ones who are dangerous. Or, at least, should not be left

One thing does ring true - we are two nations divided by a common
language.

I've silenced a dinner table over on the North American side of the
pond with very innocent comments in (North Western)English.

A long time ago (in England)there was a man employed to make sure that
workers were awake in order to make it to work on time.

He was known as the Knocker Up.

Make of it what you will !

And a better offer could even be less pay, but shorter commute or
even you get to work with old friends.

There are a lot of reasons to change jobs.

Depending on circumstances, things like long commutes, friendships,
time with family, etc, can rank high on the list of reasons to change
jobs.

Good for him that not only did he find something, he made a step up.

I would venture to guess that he saw the writing on the wall and
decided to move onto something a bit more secure. This time around the
Slim Devices BU was apparently spared a RIF, but who's to say that will
be the case the next time around. I saw it where I used to work - a
point is reached where the cuts did into the bone because there is no
more dead wood to get rid of. It's frightening.

I share your view, I wish all of them well. With all the RIFs going
on, this is not a good time (and Silicon Valley is not currently a good
place) to be looking for a job.

It's too bad that people just disappear in the night, without any
announcement or comment from the company or any of the various
employees who are active here. But I guess it's necessary given
employment law and practices, lest something said be viewed as
tarnishing someone's reputation. No one would want that.
