You said that the ghost tag(s) was not there when you set LMS to scan an empty system. Did you try scanning a system with just one album? I don't think that the word "Folk" appears in LMS source code except for in an totally unrelated comment https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/blob/55f8e3f3d584baf6a3979a13fd23c7ef8e845d59/HTML/EN/html/scriptaculous/unittest.js#L508 While it is possible that the Github search missed something or it is in a binary ... I suspect not. So it does appear to be coming from a file that the scanner is scanning. Perhaps it extracts a tag from a mysterious file and then a bit later decides that the file is not valid for including ... but by then has already remembered the tag. Who knows. Re: [slim] Empty genres
I wonder if there is a hidden file creating the problem. Create a new folder that is empty and point LMS to just that folder for music. Clear and rescan. Does the mystery genre appear? Point LMS to just one album folder, clear and rescan. Does one genre appear for that album? That might help figure out what is going on. Wishing best of luck! Nah, just things like "folk/rock"; where this one occurred I redid the genres in MP3tag as "folk\\rock", setting up two genres. No instances of "folk/rock" remain according to MP3tag, and I've searched and searched to find any, but the category still remained after the virgin scan, as well as after delete-and-rescan operations. You can remove the cache from within the LMS dialog in pCP, but I'm not sure what the implications are. And since the library was scanned after a completely new installation, presumably whatever is in the cache was added at that time, which means it got the genre names from somewhere. R. My thought exactly. Since no files are being identified within the genre, where is LMS getting the genre name? Since the problem persisted after a complete virgin scan on a new device, it means that it's getting it from somewhere within the folder being scanned, presumably. I note the suggestion about playlists, but there are no playlist names with genre in them, and the playlists themselves point to files in the music folder, none of which appear to have the genre names. Not sure how that might work. I will look into extended tags, but if the tags are specific to files than those files should show up within the genre and don't. R. This is very much a long shot, but is it possible that a plugin adds some genres to the list? I not only did that, I moved the entire operation from a Win10 pc to a PCP, and then of course did a full library build. This was after the genre tags were rationalized. Made no difference. After some further changes (on the PCP) I did a full wipe and rescan. Also made no difference. As noted, no actual files are identified as being in the genres, so no tags attached to a file are being read. I assume if there were the files/tracks would be identified. The issue is that a genre appears to be on a list, which is displayed under genres, but no actual files are thus tagged. R. My confusion is that NO troublesome tags remain attached to tracks/files. Nothing is tagged with those genres. It is just that the genre category remains in the genre list generated by LMS, although no files/tracks are linked to the tag. The LMS report is that the category is present but is empty. You might still have ID3v1 tags. I went over for advice to the MP3tag forum, and it was suggested that the residual tags might be linked to APE tags somehow. Received helpful advice on to strip these out using MP3tag, which I did. There are no remaining APE tags. Sadly, no joy. The same residual tags are showing up after having done that adjustment on some 244 files, and then doing a full rescan of the library. It's clearly something in the tag structure, not a holdover within LMS, as I did a complete conversion to a PCP server, with a complete new scan and a different file path. Still the same result -- a number of genres are shown, but they are empty. The genre is identified from somewhere, even though there are no files with that genre tag. This is a mystery. R. Re: [slim] Empty genres
I've had a similar problem before. There are various versions of tags, not always immediately visible in MP3tag. If you delve around you'll find how to view them all. Hopefully that's your answer. Take care of your tongue. It is in a wet place and can easily slip. Re: [slim] Empty genres
I was tidying up genres in preparation for migrating to a PiCorePlayer from my old and barely functional Win10 server. So I accelerated that, thinking the new scan with the new server would solve the problem. Sadly, no. Still empty genres. I think this means the genre category is in some way a lingering presence in the music files, although invisible in MP3tag. Any ideas? R. [slim] Empty genres
I'm on an endless task of rationalizing genres, after years of neglect. I'm trying to reduce the number of genres by eliminating overlap and correcting obvious stupidities. Perfection is not the goal. In a number of cases I have completely eliminated a genre and re-assigned the tracks to other genres. However, the genre often but not always remains, but shows as empty. So no tracks have that genre, but it still stays in the list. This is after a full rescan. Why is this?
