Re: [slim] Not quite ready for prime time

2008-05-15 Thread bobkoure

Is this a rant or a request for some help?
If it's a rant, well, glad you got that off your chest. I know how you
feel as I'm the IT guy in my house, so it's my fault if someone's
printer won't print, etc...
Otherwise, you might mention some other system details.
For instance, are -both- your squeezebox and server connected
wirelessly? If so, any chance of running a wire between your router and
the server? Do other internet streams work OK (like Pandora or Rhapsody,
if you're using them)? What if you cut the server out of the loop by
connecting your player directly to squeezenetwork?

No surprise there. Printers aren't ready for prime time ;)

Re: [slim] Not quite ready for prime time

2008-05-15 Thread ds2021

My experience is that internet radio on the SB works as well as can be
expected given the nature of the medium. Difficulties encountered
typically surround problems with the radio feed itself, including
server load issues, URL changes, and general internet connectivity
issues. None of these relate to the SC or SB handling of the feed.

I myself prefer internet radio as a fire and forget solution to
hearing new music, but I also understand that it is a relatively new
medium with inherent issues. When one channel stops working for one of
the above reasons, I know to switch. If no channel works, I know to
revert to my music collection. If that doesn't work, then I consider
whether or not SC is the issue. If there is a specific problem that you
are running into with internet radio, perhaps a better description of
the issue would lend itself to a solution.

Finally, I wonder if prime time is really applicable to any digital
streaming audio device at this time. I cannot stand the thought of a
physical media collection, but is a digital collection typical these
days? For those that it is, the concept of streaming it over networks
is still not a given in my experience.

Also remember that a support form is mainly for people who are reporting
problems. People very rarly write on a forum to say all is going well.

Apart from self-inflicted injuries from adventurous nightly downloads,
I've never had a serious problem that I couldn't solve myself in a few
mins or maybe a question or two on this forum. I've never called
support. It just works for me!

[slim] Not quite ready for prime time

2008-05-14 Thread jbloewheedle

I have to agree with some of the posts regarding the suitability of the
squeezebox etc for everyday use. I am in no way a techie, but have been
using computers since we thought editing config.sys and autoexec.bat was
pretty high tech.
It just seems there are a lot of issues with this system, especially
concerning streaming internet radio. I travel a lot, and more times
than often I come home to my wife complaining that the @#$^^! radio
isn't working. Not to mention that the help documentation provided,
perhaps for anyone except IT professionals, is essentially useless.
No question that it is a great concept, and probably the way of the
future.
Got to go, it stopped working again.

The only problems I ever have is of my own. Fooling around with beta's,
mixing a bunch of addons, tweaking and finding limits. When I just use
the recommended version and just the addons I really need it runs
great. I also have my library on a usb drive and the squeezebox is run
on a wireless connection. I can see your point for some people that
find a remote challenging (my wife, shhh) but not for most people that
know a little bit about computers. It certainly isn't as bad as needing
to be a computer tech to run it.

Re: [slim] Not quite ready for prime time

2008-05-14 Thread jbloewheedle

Thanks for the reply. I dont have any add ons or anything else. Main
problem seems to be internet radio - I ripped all of my CD's using EAC
onto an external drive and have had no problems playing them using
squeezebox.
Cheers

Re: [slim] Not quite ready for prime time

2008-05-14 Thread Nonreality

So it works well for your ripped stuff just not for streamed. Not that
this is a great idea but I was having trouble with streamed on all of
my computers and decided to change wireless routers. It solved all my
problems and now it's just like listening to my ripped music. I went
with a Netgear wnr854t wireless router. Now all my music streams plus
stuff like youtube run great. My old router was a fairly new super g
type router but just never did the job like this new one. Another
thing that impressed me is I can run the type N on my laptop and the
squeezebox at the g level without a problem. With a lot of the routers
I've seen and used you have to cut back to the lowest common
denominator. Anyway just an idea if you could get access to a
different router and eliminate that as a problem. If you have a Costco
they're great about taking stuff back if it didn't make a difference.
