Re: [slim] Plans if Logitech pulls the plug ?
I've been a user since I brought one of the original SliMP3s somewhere around 20 years ago, then moved to the Classic/SB3 and currently have a pair of Touches and a SB Radio. All are working just fine (though I have expanded with a pair of Raspberry Pi players with HiFiBerry HATs.) While I certainly don't want the devices to break or Logitech to drop support for LMS, I sure can't complain if those things happen as I've gotten more than my money's worth from them. Interestingly, I'm currently in a Roon trial to see if their extra bells and whistles are worth the annual subscription fee. That service does support the Squeezebox and RPi players as well as other equipment. Not sure where my decision on that is going to land here in a few weeks, but the one thing I do know is that I won't be out of business no matter what the SB players or Logitech decide to do. Slimdevices was one of the most far-sighted and innovative products around, but, in the computer world, even the best stuff eventually gets passed. The nice thing is we aren't yet to that point. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111525 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Plans if Logitech pulls the plug ?
The way I see it, there are numerous advantages of the lms plateform over competitors that a commercial company could use in its products. For one, there is the squeezelite player which could be installed in any connected radio. Making them compatible with lms. In the past, weve seen many network streamers becoming Roon ready. Being squeeze ready would be quite the thing for the future of the platform. There is also the possibility to control lms with a home automation setup. Although not really plug and play, an integrator could manage to make it work beautifully. Cant say that of play-fi. Also, the server is compatible with every platform out there. Mac, Linux windows, x86 or arm. Beautiful!! The new material interface is a strong selling point as lms was considered as having an aging interface. If Logitech pulls the plug, I wonder if another company would be interested in a rebranded initiative built over lms. If I were in the speaker industry, Id be vey interested by this product. Re: [slim] Plans if Logitech pulls the plug ?
Any chance that Logitech would un-pull the plug? By that I mean bring out new streaming radios based on the Squeezebox technology? Radio streaming is much more mainstream than it was when the Squeezeboxes were produced and the idea of paying a monthly subscription fee for the online service is more accepted as well. New players and a subscription fee for an upgraded and revitalized mysb.com could be viable? I know there are more competitors with Alexa, phones, etc. than back then but there are other companies making internet radios as well and seem to have enough success to stay in the game. I've considered switching to one of them but I'm not familiar with how they work, if they will keep working should it become abandoned and this remained viable so I've doubled down on it - just bought a Transporter to go with my Boom along with using the Windows clients some. Maybe Logitech just wants to stay in the low cost PC add on business keyboards, mice, speakers - all lower cost items with minimal software; but the Squeezebox line certainly has a strong fan base even after all these years with no new product. spt87a's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=69892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111525 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

chopinhauer wrote: > But if Logitech pulls the plug surely at least my current set up will > still work. Correct? Correct, up to a point. It won't halt the minute Logitech shuts down the servers, but it may still affect you in a longer run. Considering that the Squeezeboxes were always a bit of a niche product, and how long it was since it was dropped, there is still a pretty robust ecosystem and user base. It's obviously not on an upward trajectory, but there are some heroes that manage to keep it relevant with new adaptations and additions in reaction to how use patterns and delivery methods change. If servers were shut down and this forum closed the natural hubs that some of this work depend upon are lost. Fully replacing them will not be trivial if at all possible and that could, in a pessimistic scenario, lead to the end of support and development. For a user that only use a local music library and a handful of plugins it would not immediately change anything, but you could experience a gradual loss of functions. If you need to migrate your server to a more recent operating system, LMS may not fully operate on that without updates, new network security protocols may block crucial resources for LMS or plugins etc. It is very much a community effort today, but the community is helped by the resources Logitech supplies. Sounds like doom and gloom, but what I'm saying is that life with LMS will be easier for all of us as long as it is a maintained product. It could very well go on for years without Logitech sponsorship, but I don't think a transition would be without major hassles, resources scattered and some developers losing interest. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111525 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Plans if Logitech pulls the plug ?
Logitech has already pulled the plug, for the most part. The biggest danger to the ecosystem will always be the loss of plugin development. The Spotifys etc of the world keep evolving their API, and eventually the ecosystem would be left only being able to play our home libraries in a very static environment that ultimately would become obsolete. Hi I just discovered LMS a few months ago and I'm extremely happy with it, far better (with the inclusion of all the streaming services as well as local files) than all the other music servers I've used. As far as I've understood, LMS originated in Logitech hardware that is no longer produced, and using LMS is still dependant on Logitech itself keeping certain services running. For example, I understand e.g Tidal support is dependant on Logitech maintaining a license agreement with Tidal. What happens when/if they decide to not do this anymore ? Are there any possibilities to keep LMS going or could it be dead any day if Logitech decides to no longer support it ? echable's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=69542 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111525 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
