Re: [slim] Advice on Universal remote - Pronto?

2008-01-31 Thread barrygordon

There is a full implementation of a SqueezeCenter remote available for
the Philips Pronto TSU9600. A new version is about to be released
which has full dynamic cover art and Internet radio. A version for the
TSU9400 is about a month away. It runs with SC 7.x It uses TCPIP over
wifi and the SlimServer CLI interface along with HTTP for certain
operations.

Contact me if you want more info ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Re: [slim] Advice on Universal remote - Pronto?

2008-01-10 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Personally, I love my Pronto 7000. It's got plenty of hard buttons and a
beautiful colour screen.
I can control every IR device I own with it.
(Wierdly, I still use the SB remote for intensive button pushing, but
it's the only one I do that for)
It's a one-way device though and you can't do stuff like display cover
art on it.
I got mine off ebay so it wasn't too expensive - about the same as the
new SB Controller!

I know that Barry Gordon's put a lot of work into the 9600 which allows
it to work directly with SlimServer and offer a much richer experience,
but that's a very different remote, and last time I checked, crazily
expensive.

There's also the just-announced Harmony One remote from some company
called Logitech. :)
Although I have a Universal Remote MX700 - which I really like - if I
was buying today I would seriously consider the Harmony One. It looks
like Logitech addressed pretty much all the issues I know I had with
their previous products - especially button size and placement.

Thanks!
I know the top-of-range pronto is expensive...but if it could do 2-way
comms and display artwork/driver SlimServer...
I like the Harmony 1000 too.

I would pay the money (call me crazy) for a single do-it-all remote
with 2-way comms (e.g. bluetooth or wi-fi) to the PC.

Now, ideally I'd like to be able to have a graphical interface with
artwork (a la Controller) for the SB.

Most universal remotes are send-only. As a result, they can not display
titles nor artwork from your SqueezeCenter.

I have loved my 7 year old Philips Pronto, but recently also started
looking elsewhere for a couple of reasons :

1. After moving into a new house, I now have both the living room as
well as the home cinema room where I would like to have a remote. I
would have to look hard to find one of those old Pronto's which is
still in a good shape.
2. I would love to have a remote that can integrate with SC to indeed
show artwork, player status, etc...
3. I also have a PS3 which uses Bluetooth for its control and therefore
also cannot be controlled by any universal remote on the market.

If I wait long enough, Logitech may show up with a Harmony 1000 that
also has the SqueezeController functionality and support for
Bluetooth...

I'd appreciate some advice. I'm thinking again about a universal remote.
I use a Linn 5101 that can handle everything except my Sky box - which
is tedious. I used to have a monochrome Madrigal which was OK...ish.

Personally, I wanted something with buttons that I can feel my around
without having to look at it.

That's why I went for one of these:

http://universalremote.com/product_detail.php?model=38

It controls my Linn gear and Sky ok. I haven't found anything it won't
control but then I don't have a huge amount of gear. I did find Linn
used a toggle bit on the volume of my Kolektor which meant I had to
have the volume increase and decrease in steps of two. The Kairn and
Majik (old version) were both fine though.

The software is easy to use and it can read pronto files if there are
any codes that are difficult to learn or you don't have the original
remote.

The only problem I've had with the squeezeboxes is the brightness
button as the push and hold doesn't update the firmware. I still use
the original remotes for this.

No, you wouldn't. It hasn't got enough buttons and it hasn't got a touch
screen and the battery life sucks for a remote, so it's mostly useless
as a universal remote for anything slightly complicated.

You could try using it to hammer a nail in the wall, though. That might
work... ;)

I meant to add a link to http:\\www.remotecentral.com

There's plenty of reviews of the the pronto type of remote control as
well as the types with buttons.

Plenty of people there are just as mad about their remotes as we are
about our Squeezeboxes.
