Re: [slim] Logitech Branding

2007-04-02 Thread dwilliams01

I guess that I would be considered one of the new arrivals. I just
recently discovered SlimDevices and Squeezebox - after it was acquired
by Logitech, as it turns out. I found out about it from a BestBuy MP3
player with Rhapsody that my wife bought at Best Buy - sorry. :)
The SlimDevices and Squeezebox names don't do much for me, truthfully.
Since I don't have the history they don't evoke a sense of high-end
audio - or maybe it is just that I'm not a big fan of accordion music.
And transporter is a movie about several car chases...I liked it, but it
doesn't sound like audio equipment to me.
Ironically the Logitech name does mean high-end equipment to me - their
trackball has certainly saved my hand over the years and I don't know
how I (or my wife) would be able to operate our AV equipment nearly as
efficiently without our several Harmony remotes (discovered after they
were acquired by Logitech, but not through Logitech).
The Logitech experience with my Harmony remotes has been very good and
they seem to want to make sure to take the time to properly support
their customers. The same can be said for their trackball when I had
to call them several years ago when upgrading computers with different
ports.
All in all, to me, the Logitech brand was a bonus and the promise of
more to come. I would suggest to them that the existing experienced
users be consulted with special focus groups, early access, advisory
groups, etc. There is a wealth of knowledge to be drawn on and a lot
of boundaries to be pushed back, etc.

Re: [slim] Logitech Branding

2007-04-01 Thread Kyle

To be honest, I've never thought the name Slim Devices evoked high-end
audio equipment -- or audio equipment at all, though the logo is
certainly better looking than Logitech's. I've never liked the name
Squeezebox either because it reminds me of that song by The Who that
I always hated.

Re: [slim] Logitech Branding

2007-03-31 Thread peterw

FYI, I just received a new all-black SB3. It still has Slim Devices
branding on the faceplace and the molded case, but its remote control
has a Logitech logo. The logo is larger and less subtle than the Slim
Devices logo on the earlier remote controls. It's not too big for the
remote, but if the upcoming Logitech faceplate logos are this big
(relative to the old Slim Devices faceplate logo), I think that would
be too large. IMO, the Logitech faceplate logo's overall height should
be no taller than the second-largest default font on the Squeezebox
display. (The current Slim Devices logo is the height of the *smallest*
font, but the Slim logo is very horizontal; with the Logitech logo being
square, it should be taller.) Make the new faceplate logo large enough
to brand the gear, but not so large that it's distracting.

Have you considered incentives for convincing retailers to carry
Squeezeboxes and Transporters? E.G., give €€€/$$$ to customers who use
a laptop and Squezebox to sell the line to their local AV shops?

Do you imagine Logitech pitching products other than the Squeezebox,
Transporter, and ReadyNAS bundle to such specialist AV retail and
custom install companies? I expect Logitech would love for a SB/Tp
dealer to order a bunch of Wireless DJ units, but to what extent are
the SB/Tp products the new flagship for Logitech's audio offerings?

call me naive but i don't see why, like record companies, logitech
couldn't realistically have slim devices as a branch of themselves.
keeping the branding on the products as it is etc. worst case, having
both logos on the packaging just to comfort the consumer (maybe that
answers my question) with a known name. personally, i'm not a fan of
the logitech logo due to aesthetics.

Unfortunately, i find that the name 'logitech' applies to run of the
mill products, something that the SB and TP definitely aren't.

I guess that's why there's the need to re-brand everything with the new
logo. A tool to bolster the image of a company who have predominately
made their name selling keyboards and other computer perhiphials(sp?).

Apple have implemented a new button called Complete My Album that
lets you buy the album at a discount if you have already bought some
tracks from the album and you can always listen to snippets in advance.
The problem is that many new artists release albums with only one or two
decent tracks on them amongst obvious filler. That was true before the
advent of iTunes and reflects the change in the industry that has
ultimately led to musicians making their money from touring, not album
sales.

I will hold my hand up and admit that for certain artists, I only want
the hits, but there are certainly others for whom I want the whole
album, especially world music.

I agree regarding some of the long standing bugs that have never really
completely been got to grips with, but i can live with those because of
what it gives me that other devices don't. But what worries me most is
the fact that many companies believe intuitive and easy to use software

want to sell as many units as humanly possible, simple as that, even if
that means removing functionality, tweakability and eventually ditch
the open source philosophy which so many of enjoy.

So thats my many people are upset/worried. I am not saying this will
happen, but over time it could.

Re: [slim] Logitech Branding

2007-03-29 Thread Mark Lanctot

autopilot;191160 Wrote:
I agree regarding some of the long standing bugs that have never really
completely been got to grips with, but i can live with those because of
what it gives me that other devices don't. Don't forget that the
-amateur programmers- are the people that made the product so good
and successful that Logitech wanted to buy it in the first place. Many
of the people are passionate about the product, Logitech shareholders
are only passionate about one thing.

But what worries me most is the fact that many companies believe
intuitive and easy to use software = dumbing down for the lowest common
denominator/mainstream Jo. Logitech want to sell as many units as
humanly possible, simple as that, even if that means removing
functionality, tweakability and eventually ditch the open source
philosophy which so many of enjoy simply to make it more accessible to
Mr Numbnuts who cant even change a lightbulb. The SB has always
appealed to a certain niche and type of person (the type who enjoy
getting there hands dirty if it mean they will enjoy their music more).
Logitech don't operate in that way. You say, -You are not Logitech's
market- but software updates will effect us all.

So thats my many people are upset/worried. I am not saying this will
happen, but over time it could. Hopefully they will adopt a kind of
simple/advanced interface option. It's could go either way for sure,
but if i was a betting man...

One of the benefits of open source programming is: if this ever becomes
a problem, the software can be forked.

The only disadvantage here would be that the forked software would be
playing catch-up with the device firmware.

If they are smart, they will do a major interface fix on Slim Server

There's one flaw in the strategy to monetise Slimsevices - it can't
play DRMed music.

Maybe they'll take a payoff from Microsoft to join the Zune 'social',
in return for dropping native support for FLAC?

Why on Earth would they have to drop FLAC in order to implement DRM? I
don't get it.

Are you implying that the firmware can't take both (this is true,
there's apparently little space left) or that Microsoft has an agenda
against FLAC? (I'm not sure they even care that it exists.)

I certainly can't imagine any company has a real agenda against FLAC, given
that so few people know what it is. Whenever it comes up in conversation

Future firmware upgrades will add Logitech branding to the boot screen

I doubt the mass market people will find the forums the best avenue for
support. The forums seem more aimed for more technically savvy people. I
imagine telephone and e-mail support will get the bulk of the general
support requests.

My feeling is that the more products they sell, the more money they have to
improve the product and create new products.
