Did you try removing the wireless card?

Good points all around. :) I examined the PCB and all internal
components looking for deformations, bad solders, or scorching and could
not see anything. If something was obviously toasted I would not
hesitate to heat up the soldering iron and attempt a fix. Can't tie the
failure to an event because it was working when I left for work and dead
when I got home.

Testing each individual component, however, is beyond my expertise (and
attention span). ;)

Not that I've seen: a working SB doesn't get THAT hot. A bit warm
perhaps, but not uncomfortable at all. (So, maybe 80 degrees F? No
clue, I suck at estimating almost anything...)

Of course, some components just randomly die sometimes. I tend to blow
up capacitors on video cards. ("ooh, look at the bulging top! I know
what blew up!")

Depending on what happened as it died, it may be possible to replace if
you know someone with some soldering skill.

I couldn't agree more... I have 3 SB3s and this is the first failure I
have had.

Took it apart last night and found what appeared to be heat related
discolorations on the inside of the case and when connecting the unit to
power outside the case, I immediately smelled a "hot electrical" smell.
No smoke or sparks and I did not investigate further...

The case on this model (SB3 with "Slim Devices" on the metal face) has
no ventilation at all. Has this ever been an issue (overheating)?

In answer to the previous question regarding the type of SB3, yes, it
is wireless.

I was able to pick up a "new still in box" SB3 on eBay for $195
yesterday to replace this one, but they are sure becoming hard to find.
I have no desire to "upgrade" to the "Touch".

I really, really hate to see these SB3 failures as I love mine. Has
anyone created a study to see if these are do to a certain batch or time
frame? Mines almost 3 years old and I really depend on it. I would not
have bought it if it only had a 2-4 year lifespan. I expect at least 10
years for my stereo equipment and have always bought quality to make
sure of this. I would be very disappointed if mine fails this soon.
It's my most favorite device ever and it would be very sad if it failed.
Plus I can't afford a replacement right now.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox v3 is Dead...

I am assuming it's a wireless SB3? My recollection is a number of
similar failures have been due to problems with the wireless card. You
might try removing the card and see if it comes to life. If you need to
run wireless, I recall there was a thread a few months back where what
was thought to be a compatible wireless card was identified... or if you
run wired it really wouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, that's the idea anyway. Also to see if it might be a brightness
setting, or IR remote problem, or something else simple.
But I wouldn't get my hopes up, just something to try. :(

If it is the VFD display you could email support and ask if they sell
them, but it may cost more than you paid for it.
They used to repair any SB3, regardless of problem, for a flat $90.
Sadly this is no longer offered (I suspect lack of parts availability).
:(

Probably not worth fixing if it's the display. of course, you could
use something other than the ir remote and pretend it's a SB Receiver.

There's a url around here somewhere for a dented box sb3 for $179 or
something which is a very nice price.

Similar thing happened to mine, do you notice any backlights in the

Ah, good point... If I understand your intent, this would rule in or out
a display failure.

If, while plugged into the power supply, I am able to access the SB3
from the web UI (SBS), then the SB3 is powered on, but the display has
failed, correct?

I will try this when I get home...

Even if it is just the display, it the unit worth fixing ($$$) or
should I just look for a "new" one (eBay)?

Can you access the SB3 from your web UI (SBS or MySB)?
