Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-09-27 Thread th80

Hi,
The ipeng app is definitely worth its money. But I realised today that
the cover art thumbnails on album level (browsing artists - albums) are
not correct. If I go directly to ipeng themed squeezecenter via safari
then the right album cover is displayed. So at least SqueezeCenter has
the right thumbs for the albums cached.

Could it be that ipeng app has its own cache? I rebuilt my complete
squeezecenter database yesterday and maybe now some ipeng cached thumbs
are pulled by different albums.

How could I fix this in case there is a cache problem on ipeng app?

You need to use your computer's ethernet address.
WOL works by broadcasting packets to all machines and the network card
itself identifies the packet as that's for me and powers on the
computer.

If you are going the SC plugin route, have a look at this, it will give

iPeng. The nice thing is that anything you write this way will work on
both (plus SqueezePlay, which could help you with your touch screen).

2009-04-09 Thread oivindi

Why is it that some CDs/rips won't play all the files in the folder when
I press play on the first track using iPeng?

Quite a few of my CD folders do this: I press play in iPeng, but only
the first track plays - not the rest of the CD. When I check the list
in iPeng, only the first track is listed.

I guess this is a tagging issue, but I can't find anything obvious
wrong with the mp3s in question.

Any ideas?

I have iPeng 1.1 on an iPhone 2G.

All the files show up fine in iPeng before I press play, it's just when

Unfortunately, it's not possible to play the whole folder content in an

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-04-08 Thread jwmelvin

Hello all. iPeng is wonderful. For picking music, it makes the iPod
unbeatable for me. I recently started using a tablet computer
occasionally, but the lack of iPeng makes me prefer the touch. Thank
you Pippin.

I have developed a Crestron (home automation equipment) interface for
SC, which now allows me to use the iPod Touch as a remote for the
entire system, including source selection and control, volume, and
lighting. For two sources, I use a SB2 and a SqueezeSlave on the
server. Having the ability to control source and volume on the same
page as music is really good for me. (I know that you can do volume in
the SB, but that doesn't work for TV, etc.) The problem is that the
functionality of my SC module is a joke in comparison to iPeng. It's
mostly usable but only a fraction of the way there. (No search, no now
playing manipulation, only currently playing cover art). It does have
some things I would love in iPeng like dynamic playlist integration
(still use iPeng web interface for that sometimes).

My point is that I applaud your efforts and discussion because
increased control from the iPod is great. I agree with Pippin that one
problem with the iPod is the auto-lock (or lack of screen blanking
without locking) and would add to that criticism the lack of hard
buttons, which means you generally have to look at it to use it, making
TV control a little less great. There are a number of devices that you
can control via IP (Tivo, SqueezeCenter, Crestron, AMX, ...); perhaps
it would be a good idea, as you say Pippin, to develop a plugin for SC
that could interface with various things. Then you could put a GUI
interface to that plugin to send commands from iPeng, if I understood
you correctly.

The beauty of the idea for me is that I could do a lot of the parsing
and processing on the SC computer, in a Crestron plugin, rather than on
my (more and more heavily loaded) Crestron processor. This would take
generic commands from the CLI interface and send them to various
devices. For me that's Crestron, but other people could directly
control a TivO or, as you have been discussing, send IR commands from
the SB to an emitter.

Okay, sorry to ramble on there, if you made it through. I know nothing
about writing plugins for SC, so I'm not really the right person to
start this project, but I might start looking into it.

Best,
Jason

But today by using iPeng to select music and press the play button,

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-04-06 Thread pippin

Probably I should be more specific.
I don't use IRBlaster myself, so I have little experience with this,
but from what I can see, can't you only use volume and power with
IRBlaster?
Or can you configure other commands as well?
And another issue: If you use that approach, the states sent by
IRBlaster have to match the player's states (volume and on/off) so you
can't really control something else without manipulating the player as
well.
Anything else will require either a new hardware - and here I don't see
a big difference to Airremote et al - OR you need a plugin that offers a
separate control layer from the physical player's. The latter is what I
proposed.

iPeng itself can only communicate to the server, after all the
iPod/iPhone doesn't have IR and you can't talk to the player directly,
so a suitable plugin to communicate to is needed.
And when that is done, we can clearly talk UI. I disagree that you can
have a generic approach for all UI tasks, after all, you will see that
most stuff providing good UIs will have a good portion of this stuff
custom coded for specific use cases, look at Airremote or IRedtoch and
you see what I mean. So the way to go is to define what we want to do
and then we can see how it can be implemented in a generic way so that
different plugins that support the use case can support this, but
supporting something through a generic UI without looking at the use
case will only result in yet another menu.

I don't use IRBlaster either but looking at the plugin code I only see
it dealing with the power changes of the squeezebox and volume changes.
Note that it can only use SB2/3 because it depends on the earphone jack
to be there so it can send signals to that output, which will be
converted to IR signals by another device. Because its IR it has no
understanding of the state of the devices it controls so it pretty much
has to start with a clean slate and begin at a power off state. Most of
the code is dealing with the differences of IR codes for devices and
converting SC API's etc into IR codes.

In my own plugin I was able to bypass much of this because I am dealing
only with one companies devices (networked Denon AVP/AVR's). Since I am
using the network protocol and not IR I can not only detect the state
of the device, but I can have the device tell the SB what to do (for
example if you change the volume on the AMP I tell the SB display to
change accordingly). You cannot do that with IR because its one way
only.

I noticed that the two apps mentioned above where still in beta or test
(more than a year). They are trying to be like a Harmony but using the
iTouch interface. Both of them need some sort of networked box to
convert network commands into IR commands. Because they are trying to
be universal its very hard to do.

This gets back to the basic question. If you really want to make
everything simple (and this is my favorite thing about iPeng as Pippin
knows) you want to only have it present you with what you need to play
your music. To me thats finding the right music, setting up the
correct player, turning on the appropriate amplifier (non Boom devices)
and making adjustments to those components as I need (ie
volumn/pausing). And lastly shutting everything down when I am done.

With iPeng today and using either my plugin (special case) or IRBlaster
(more general case) I think this is achievable.

iPeng does what it does best, and these plugins deal with all the
infrastructure underneath. Plus both solutions work with and without
iPeng in case you pick up another remote.

Asking iPeng to be a universal remote is going to make it ugly in my
opinion and I hope if Pippin goes that route he will always make an
iPeng lite as well as a full featured one for those that want it to do
more.

So are there other things that iPeng could do to make the use of SC
more enjoyable? Sure. We all wait anxiously for those features. But I
don't think making it a universal remote is such a feature.

Excellent points Andy

When I read your post I looked into those apps and was disappointed as
well. When I first bought a Plasma TV for my home theater I purchased a

I think for the Duet Logitech did a pretty fair job on the controller

An I-pod app to make it into a stand alone universal remote sounds like

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-04-06 Thread pippin

Chris,

just to relief you, I don't see iPeng as being as a universal
do-anything remote, yet I do want to finally be able to control all
music related commands with it, that's why I will add things like a
power button for a server and a way to switch to the digital inputs on
Transporter from the player interface. The trick is to bury these
features in a way they don't clutter up anything in the plain
interface while still being somewhat simple to reach. The way is to
have items easily or less easily accessible based on the frequency of
use.

I also have been asking for a use-case description because I somewhat
lack an understanding on what a more general approach is good for.
I definitely do NOT understand what Airremote et al are good for if
they use IR as a channel, and this is also why I am always pretty
critical about Multimedia. My experience is that different Media have
very different requirements and that mixing those into one system will
simply give you a bad system. I'm having a bad time with this approach
here in Germany because right now everybody is so obsessed with
convergence and video.

I'll give you an example: I believe an iPod touch is a VERY good remote
for playing music (obviously) because you can access your database, you
can manipulate players and playlists and generally you are flexible to
show a lot of information and have a flexible use case. Plus - and
that's the most important point for me - you can carry it around
because I tend to listen to music everywhere: Kitchen, bathroom, sofa,
bed... It has one drawback, and that is lack of immediate access
because you have to disable the screen saver first.
For TV or video, IMHO, the situation is very different. I don't carry
my TV around a lot and it does have a big screen to give me all the
visual feedback I want. So for a TV, I believe an infrared device is
the better solution. I also don't have the problem that it ends up
being in another room, since I only use it in a line-of-sight area from
the TV screen.

So as much as I (would) hate having 25 remotes around, I believe
merging these two use cases will result in unnecessary compromises on
at least one side and that while even adding additional cost - given
the price of simple IR remotes.

Just my 2cts :-)

What would it have to do?

iPeng 1.1 has some improved support for volume control through
IRBlaster, but I think you would want more than that.

A programmable keyboard or something? Does IRBlaster support something
like that so that it would only need an interface?

 Pippin,

I was wrestling with my Logitech harmony remote yesterday, which has a
beast of a touchscreen interface and thought that the iPeng / iPod type
 application would be much better.

Wouldn't involve any additional hardware except for the IR wand as I
think squeeze products (apart from duet?) can drive an IR LED
 directly.

The concept of a single remote using an iPod touch that was wireless /
networked across all my AV equipment sounded very appealing.

 Just a thought.
SC works as a server application. When you point an IR controller at a
SB it just takes the command and passes it to the server. The server
then takes action and actually tells the box what to do. This is that
way because any device (controller, SB, web interface, 3rd party
plugins, ...) can tell the SC server what they want and then the server
sends the commands to the device.

So the best way to use iPeng in my mind is for it to send commands to
the server (which is what it is doing natively) and have the server
direct the action appropriately.

There are various tools out there to create plugins for example and
some of these also pick up the information within the plugin to
communicate to other devices. For example I wrote a plugin that picks
up volumn changes from the SB (could be driven by iPeng, SB remote, web
...) and it then communicates to an AVR to actually process the
request.

In iPeng 1.1 it exposes more server sided functionality without
actually having rewritten that code natively in iPeng. Asking iPeng to
create new and unique controls that would be useful from SC in general
is a sticky slope from a development standpoint. Its better, more
efficient and cleaner to do this from the server side.

Now having said that I am sure that there are some specific features
that might be best done natively and don't have a universal appeal. ie
like getting access to native content on the iTouch device.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-04-04 Thread pippin

Chris,

actually that was what I meant. However, if iPeng's got to support it,
you also need some UI, and just having menus may be a bit too little.
Although it has the big advantage that it will work with the Controller
and Squeezeplay, too.
But you can still re-map menu items to something else and part of this
is what the upcoming iPeng 1.2 interface is about. For example, I plan
to include a Power button for servers that can shut down a server
using the SvrPowerControl plugin and will wake it up by sending a WOL
packet. Of course this is all proprietary but once it works you could
as well define some standardized interface.

Another idea I had, especially with local playback in mind, was that
you could connect players to the server that are not really players.
They would have only part of the capabilities, most notably not the
actual playback capabilities, but you could for example use the
interfaces for play, pause, skip, volume... If a plugin did that and
used these commands to drive an external unit, it's a way to wrap your
whole entertainment into the SB architecture. IRBlaster is going into
the direction but not fully so. Your plugin does the same but only in
connection with an amp connected to a player, if I understand it right.
But theoretically you could write a plugin that wraps a TV control into
this, since essentially all you need for a TV is power, skip and volume
and then you could have a player TV controlled through your SC based
equipment.

Cool?

 Cool?

Yes but there are two issues here. One is that SC can only interpret
certain events. For example in the API you can see what you can
subscribe to in the command callbacks. If an event is driven from one
of these events, then you can either trap that event and have SC ignore
it while your plugin does whatever you want, or you can let SC do its
thing and continue to do what you want outside of SC.

The other situation is sort of like what you are describing. Complety
new events that SC knows nothing about and would never be aware of.
Let me give some examples:

For the first type of event you may have the turning on/off a SB or
adjusting volume, picking a track, running a search etc. All of these
events you use your SB for you could attach related events to like
having an AMP turn on/off, adjusting your lighting to match the gendre
of song being played etc. This is all related to what you are doing
with the SB.

For the second example its a bit tougher. You have to leave the SC
environment and ask yourself what does iPeng need to do thats not
connected with a SC event? Perhaps this is your point with the UI. For
example maybe you want to kick off an application that shows you how
much power all of the SB's and amps you have connected are using.

My only point is that things that are intrinsic to SC should stay
server sided if possible so it works with the largest possible mixture
of devices. Things that are heavily UI or device dependant could run
natively.

I may still be confused by all of the features you have cooked up for
iPeng and we will have to wait and see what comes in 1.2. I just see a
lot of features people are asking for are truely capable today, although
they may not be available. I was suprised what you had to do to support
IRBlaster in 1.1 for example. One would have thought that no special UI
would have been required in iPeng to support that. But of course you
know what you are getting into :-)

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-04-04 Thread Andy8421

Pippin, Chris,

Having read your comments, I can see this is rather more involved than
I had appreciated. I looked at Airremote and Iredtouch and they are
both pretty much what I was after - iPod multiple remotes - but both
involve buying relatively expensive hardware that sits on the network
and drives the IR leds to control the AV equipment. I already have
that functionality in the squeeze products and they are already sitting
next to the devices I wish to control. So I had hoped that it would be a
'relatively' simple task to use the squeeze IRBlaster capability under
the control of iPeng to drive the AV equipment.
Pippin, if you have a couple of minutes to have a look at the websites
for the two products mentioned, they do a good job of describing the
functionality I am looking for.

This does raise an interesting question for Logitech and other box
manufacturers who make their money by giving software away and charging
for the box. While some may disagree, the Squeeze Controller and
Logitech Harmony handheld remotes are not is the same league as the
iPod touch, either in form factor or usability. Harmony in the UK is
twice the price of an iPod touch, and is not without its issues.
Whether Apple realised it at the time or not, they have produced a
multi purpose handheld controller that happens also to be an iPod. This
could be a game changer for Logitech and similar.

Seriously though, we feel your pain. Shoddy work from Apple - if
they're going to put this bottleneck in place 'for our benefit', the

Yes. 1.1 has that option.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-03-26 Thread saturn

Hi, just a short question. The internet radio function is not longer
working in ipeng.

When I hit the internet radio button it's loading for a short while and
after that I get the error message Cannot connect to server. Please
check server availability or see help for server setup information.

Yesterday the internet radio was working fine, shoutcast, locals, you
name it but now I got that error. Restarted squeezecenter a couple of
times but no luck.

ipeng does connect to my squeezecenter as I can see the name of my
squeezebox in de lower left corner. Browsing my music dir is no
problem, playing music works fine. Any idea 'bout this one?

Unfortunately I did not succeed in having a new one for 1.1. It's
another artwork issue. The problem is, it's too transparent. Will do
an update, maybe as a 1.1.1 or in 1.2 at latest.

The trick would be to try to hit something non-transparent. Sorry.

Chunkywizard;410315 Wrote:

As many colors as you like, but I#d prefer something that uses my
scheme colors which means: Background is 0% red, 0% green, 10% blue and
the lightest foreground color is 90% red, 90% green, 100% blue.

Dimensions: I need two: 57x57 and 512x512, the small one may or may not
have a lense effect, iPhone does that, the big one must not have a
lense effect.

I've been planning to set up a little icon competition on
PenguinLovesMusic.com (price: an iPod touch or an SBR, let's see) but
didn't find the time, yet, to do this.

Have you tried to use internet radio from SqueezeCenter (the web

Unfortunately the error message is a bit ambiguous (another thing that
will get better in 1.1), if you can use your local library it's
obviously not the connection to the server.
My guess would be either your server doesn't have an internet
connection or your SqueezeNetwork account is not set correctly in SC.

Oh yes, won't happen. That was when I supposed 1.1 would be ready for
January :-)

Prio 1 is nor wo fix usability of the NowPlaying screen, this is a UI
effort so it will take time for testing and trying things out.
Realistically two months which will put us at the end of May for 1.2

Playback is a development effort. iPhone does not support audio
streaming so you have to do that yourself and integrate it with the
local playback. iPhone 3.0 offers some promising new things, fist of
all video (not audio) streaming, now you can actually use the video
facility for audio, too, so that could be an option. Will evaluate, but
I think it's a good guess that the introduction of iPhone 3.0 would be a
possible timeframe.
iPhone 3.0 also offers to be able to sell add-ons which would help me
out with another issue: some of the streams used require proprietary
codecs which I might or might not get for free. Paying for rollout of
those to existing customers is something I probably can not handle (and
don't want to: investing a lot of work to add features for people who
did already purchase a product is one thing, me _paying_ for them to
get additional features is something else) so the ability to add those
codecs as an option adds to the chances...

Pippin, thanks for a great app!

I had just discovered the Simplify app this past Friday, and spent
most of the weekend thinking damn, I wish I could use the Itouch as my
remote

Did a search on a lark Monday morning and found the app - a wonderful
surprise, and worked a treat right out of the box eas well

I'm using a 8 gig Itouch - what kind of battery life should I expect
using this pretty much exclusively as the remote?

Thanks again, this app really takes the duet to another level

Err.. no. That's not a good sign. That means, even though I fed all
that text into the 1.1 description iTunes connect obviously set it to
active already for 1.0.5 - although the 1.0.5 description in iTunes
connect that I see still has the old text.

I definitely don't like this. It promises features only the 1.1 will
have and Apple's not approved that, yet. Will at least do some
temporary changes.

The strange thing is it only applies to the text, the images and icons
are still correct (both will also change with 1.1)

Add to that they will *hopefully* integrate the streaming sufficiently
so that it can run in the background, controlled by the music app.

At the moment I think something similar is possible, where one of the
music sites streams via Safari on the iPhone/iPod, and you can
'minimise' Safari but the stream keeps running.

No, you can't stream via Safari. Safari can issue file playback with

Oh I see. Probably just wishful thinking that the streaming will be
integrated into the music app, although that would make sense - you can
surf and check mail while listening to local music, so why not an

No, didn't have time to watch the KN, yet I did have a look at the 3.0

Direct opportunities are not completely obvious, of course I could let
people pay for add on modules now :-)

Another option might be to use some of the notification stuff to have

One thing that WILL be of interest mid term is cutpaste but I'm not

Hi Peng! Love iPeng for controlling my SB3. What I miss most is better
access to song info, as was available through ipeng skin. Sounds like
you are working on that. One thing that would be useful to me would be
to be able to access song info for upcoming tracks in the playlist.
Maybe tap and hold on a playlist item invokes info for that track?

A common play mode for me is to start (Erland Dynamic Playlist) Random
Songs, which I can get through iPeng via Favorites, then look ahead in
the playlist and edit, either deleting or adding songs from the
album/show of one of the tracks. I sometimes want more info than artist
and track name for upcoming tracks.

Thanks for your work and your active involvement in the forums. Looking
forward to future versions.

That's planned for 1.2
First I have to get the interface to display the info done for 1.1 and
then it will be added to NowPlaying in 1.2.
The interface stuff is necessary since the TrackInfo structure will be
used for plugins on NowPlaying. This way it will be compatible with the
Squeezebox Controller, giving simply more options.

Songinfo while browsing will be in 1.1.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-03-03 Thread pippin

To ease the waiting for the next iPeng release, here's a little review
on what it will do and how it will probably look like:

http://penguinlovesmusic.de/2009/03/03/preview-ipeng-goes-squeezenetwork/

It's currently in beta testing and not all of the features/changes
envisioned for it are done but the big architecture changes are through
(I hope).

What will it do? Well, a lot of details, but mainly two things:

*Plugins*
It uses the SqueezePlay menu system so it will be able to support all
plugins that provide menus for the controller (and don't require LUA)

*SqueezeNetwork*
And it will work with SqueezeNetwork, so you can shut down your server
if you like :-)

Have Fun!

Edit: neilcoburn, just saw your post. Well, it's beta and it does still
have bugs. I'd expect end of this months, realistically, a bit sooner,
hopefully.

Something simple will do, as long as users won't accidentally touch
song while scrolling the playlist.

I am not too sure which is more complicated.

Sorry, but the interface used by iPeng (and most other remote control
apps, including all for iPhone) is not present in 6.3.
What is your issue with the power up and 7.x? Have you tried to find a

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-02-27 Thread Random Lurker

I finally took the plunge, and picked up an Ipod Touch to use as a
controller with iPeng to run a new Squeezebox receiver. The short
version is.I love it!

The longer version - Some comments/questions:
1) Performance is generally very good, especially considering I have a
library of almost 8000 mostly FLAC albums. The one area that was slow
is the screen I intended to be my standard view - The Artists-All
Albums list. I prefer this list order for browsingjust like you
would see them in a record store. When I first selected this item, all
you see is a blank screen. (I assume is is getting/sorting the list).
It takes a VERY long time for anything to display. When it does, it is
very responsive. I have seen vague comments that this timing will
improve... is this true? If I left the list and returned, it still
took a long time to load.

2) Blank screens - on the above mentioned view and on search, when
something is actually happening but all you see is a blank screen, it
is hard to tell if the device is actually doing anything. Some sort of
progress indicator would help immensely.

3) Custom Browse - I have seen some comments about CustomBrowse with
iPeng - but I assume they were talking about the plug-in, right? And
these are planned to be supported in 1.1? Do I have that right?

4) Pre-fetch - I appreciate that you have set it up so that it does not
lag while loading artwork.but is there anyway to add an option to
pre-fetch all artwork? I would like to have all the art in place when
flipping thru the LONG list of albums, and would be willing to set
aside the iPod and wait while it grabbed all of this data, rather than
populating it as it was browsed.

5) Search navigation - The one place I got confused in the UI was while
using the search screen. When the keyboard is up, I wasn't sure how to
escape. I didn't intuitvly realize that I needed to make the
keyboard disappear to open up my navigation options. Maybe it's just
me, but it was a little confusing.

6) Pauses in tracks - When I performed a search, it caused to audio
playback to stop. It also took a very long time to return a result.
With no progress indicator, no results shown for a long time, and an
audio dropout, I had assumed the app had crashed. Ids the search time
due to the size of the library? Or is something else happening here?

Thanks again for all your hard work - these comments are not meant as
criticism.just trying to help move iPeng from very good to
excellent.

Good to hear that.

always welcome! Seriously!

You guess right, it's the sorting.
I really want to improve this on 1.1 - all other lists do already live
without sorting, this one will need some special consideration.
If you want to make sure I don't forget it, please file a ticket :-)
https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/newticket

 2) Blank screens - on the above mentioned view and on search, when
something is actually happening but all you see is a blank screen, it
is hard to tell if the device is actually doing anything. Some sort of
 progress indicator would help immensely.

Err.. Yes. For this screen, I plan on one, Search will be a bit more
difficult, I'll see...

 3) Custom Browse - I have seen some comments about CustomBrowse with
iPeng - but I assume they were talking about the plug-in, right? And
these are planned to be supported in 1.1? Do I have that right?

Yes, that's currently beta testing. Quite cool.

Short answer: mostly no.
The problem is two-fold.
#1: Getting the artwork onto the device. I could indeed add a prefetch
for this (another ticket?). But this will only get you half of what you
want since...
#2 Displaying the artwork while scrolling requires the images to be
created in memory (RAM) since scrolling consumes almost all of iPhone's
computing power and there is simply no way I can cram 8,000 images (plus
all the radio artwork) into memory, it would alone consume more than I
believe is typically available.
There's another thing, however that I would like to do (ticket #3?): Do
a more intelligent read-ahead that gives a chance to get artwork into
memory you are likely to need next. Will probably give you the desired
effect.

Yes, but I didn't find a way to place the keyboard above the buttons.
Apple Remote does it the same way.

 6) Pauses in tracks - When I performed a search, it caused to audio
playback to stop. It also took a very long time to return a result.
With no progress indicator, no results shown for a long time, and an
audio dropout, I had assumed the app had crashed. Is the search time
due to the size of the library? Or is something else happening here?

Maybe. And maybe your server is a bit slow.
And - agreed - iPeng is quit demanding here, since it starts an
incremental search with one character only.
Actually it's a bad design on SC's side since iPeng only fetches 8
elements per category and those should really be available fast, but
obviously SC does a full query first.
I consider doing it the same way as the controller and require two or
three characters before starting search.

2009-02-25 Thread pippin

socistep;400532 Wrote:

The problem is, the plugins are being developed with the IR remote or
the controller in mind, both of which have a play button. The Web
Interface has the overlays that also show play and never actually
have play as a default action so these plugins simply always present
a lower level to dig down into.

Now while it's the same for the library, iPeng can take care of that
because it knows the lowest level, but for internet radios and music
services, any level can or can not be the lowest level so iPeng has to
allow you to dig down, you don't want to get stuck on the album level,
don't you?

Actually, the touch-and-hold gesture is quite an effective
workaround, once you figure it out.

The FUNCTIONALITY of SN should be supported by iPeng if it's run
through SqueezeCenter (that is, using Internet Radio and Music
Services through SC). You can NOT, however, run iPeng purely through
SN, you will always need SC running.

Version 1.1 is planned to support a direct connection to SN which then
will no longer require SC.

I can't talk about Napster, haven't used that myself. Is this available

Napster is available in Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, and the United
States.

I am using it since yesterday and it works fine. It would be perfect if
the time lag between selecting a title (pressing the play button) and
starting the wma would be decreased. But this obviously just affects
SN...

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-02-18 Thread govardha

Hello,

I just purchased and installed my copy of iPeng. I am pretty happy
with it, save for some minor sluggishness when it starts up. Further,
I have noticed a few times it does not identify the SB3 which is
playing some content.

I have one question, I use the iTunesupdate plugin to rate the songs.
I do this by hitting a # on the remote and the SB3 shows the rating.
Is there some way the plugins usage can be incorporated?

There is a distinct possibility this may just not happen, but I thought
I would ask.

Thanks,
G

You have to use the TrackStat plugin along with iTunesupdate.
iPeng will then show the rating on the overlay with the progress bar.

Since you have the shortcut, I don't think a real Choose Server
setting needs to be that convenient. I would add it to the settings
pane, or as a new item in More.

well, even though during 1.1 (and only there) some player or server
related functionality should will show up in the main menu (and new
plugin features probably always will), the general idea is to bundle
all player and server centric functionalities on NowPlaying.
Also: The servers need to be there because in 1.2 you are supposed to
be able to move players between servers using D'n'D, which is
especially important for using SN.

I found the default skin for Squeezecenter to be usable in horizontal
mode on the iPhone. This suggestion is just so you can punt and not
have to muck up your interface with too many settings.

Hm. Interesting thought, especially since 1.2 will have some player and
server settings in its menu tree.

I have been on 2.2 for quite a while. It wasn't that bad before.Would
the fact that some of my players are based on SqueezeSlave has anything
 to do with it?

Can't imagine that, it's a touch screen thing. There's another issue
with Squeezeslave that it will sometimes not accept volume changes but
that will result in the handle popping back instead of not being
accessible.

When I try to control one of my soft-players sometimes it will take 3
or 4 misses to get a hit on the volume control. Also volume control on
the iPOD app. is not that bad.

Yes, but as stated before, that's NOT the UISlider control, but a
MPVolumeView which does behave quite different (much better) but
directly acts on the system volume. Haven't found a way to use that
one, it's not even a control.
