Using 2 eSata drives I can backup a full 600+ GB in approx 2 hrs.
After that it only gets quicker by applying what's changed to the

Re: [slim] Greatest Hits problem?

2008-03-27 Thread Jeff Flowerday

I have a folder structure.

artist/album/01 Track.wma A single Folder.jpg file for each album.

I have Aerosmith's and ZZ Top's greatest hits.

When I go to Aerosmith and look at the albums, I see Greatest Hits with
the proper Aerosmith cover art but I see ZZ Top as the artist below the
album. The songs in the album are correct and are the Aerosmith
songs.

They both have the appropriate names in Album Artist tag in all the
files. I just double checked that.

When you say list albums by band, do you mean the check box
Band/Orchestra on the Library tab? If so then no I didn't have that
on.

I'm just rebuilding now, I have 25000 songs so it takes a bit.

What's weird is that Bob Seager's greatest hits is fine. I wonder if
it's first artist A and last artist Z related. Though that would be a
wild bug.

As for your experiment I'll try it shortly if it's still messed up
after this rebuild.

For those of you experiencing the problem, if you are using WPA2, would
it be possible for you to switch to WPA to see if the problem is
resolved? Please report your findings here.

Also, if you can run your SB Receiver in a wired configuration, you can
use the bridged mode (see the Duet User Guide '*here*'
 (http://www.slimdevices.com/su_documentation.html) for details) to test
that the Controller is good and that the issue is with connecting to
your router/AP. If the Controller works reliably in bridged mode, then
we'll need to troubleshoot around the router/AP.

I just switched from WPA2 only to WPA only and it hasn't helped me, my
Duet remote is still stalling for 30 to 180 seconds every now and then.
The sign just spins when entering an artist or album or any item for
that matter. Eventually I back out and try again or a different item
and it starts working again.

Running SqueezeCenter 7.0, I've updated the remote once when prompted a
week or so ago.

I'm using a Dlink DIR 655 running in ng mode only.

DHCP is on. I've tried both WPA2 only and WPA only.

Wireless strength is 85% or greater.

Is there a way to specify the date format when scanning or to tell the

Have any decisions been made on this?

I'd prefer silent with a progress bar as well. All my files need to be
transcoded so I'm biased.

But as the above poster says if I have use timeline that would work for
me as well. Just need some way to move around transcoded files.

Thanks,

You are still out of luck with the current implementation. A progress
 bar
is still only a GUI. The goToTime() function is the real workhorse in
 the
current implementation and in the SongScanner plugin on which the new
proposed UI is based. gotoTime() cannot jump through any transcoded
 stream.

It would require a new api, common to all transcoding applications
 that
 allows resetting the stream pointer.

 -kdf

That's too bad.

Re: [slim] is it ok to use the web while ripping discs?

2008-03-09 Thread Jeff Flowerday

Just make sure that error checking is on with whaterver software you use
and you should be fine.

I didn't know about error checking in WMP before I started ripping my
2000+ CD collection. Fortunately I found the error of my ways 300 in.
Without error checking in WMP I'd get the odd blast of static when the
drive encountered a problem with a disk. They were pretty infrequent
so infrequent that I didn't hear one for quite a few days of spot
checking via my Zune.

With error checking on it went away completely. Discs in real bad
shape still might cause skipping or drop outs but there isn't much you
can do besides buy a new copy.

Don't use crap like WMP, use EAC and FLAC to rip your CD's.
People regularly post here complaining that they inadvertently ripped
their collection in WMA + DRM and now it won't play on their SB's.

Absolutely EAC is the best solution if you have the time and want the

I don't like when people feel they should ram their solutions down

FLAC is a great lossless format but in some environments it isn't the

Re: [slim] Flac On Ipod in Cars

2008-09-29 Thread Jeff Flowerday

I have to disagree that you can't tell the difference between 320vbr and
lossless in Cars. It really depends on the car and the amount of road
noise transferred to the cabin.

My current cars factory head unit play wma lossles native off a USB
key. I did a back to back comparison between lossless and 320kbps vbr
and was actually surprised that I could hear a difference. My last car
had DVD-A support and it was night day different than regular CDs.

That said I couldn't tell the difference on my Zune or computer
speakers. So as mentioned above the sub par DAC and headphone amp in
iPods and such are more the limiting factor.

Goodsounds;410552 Wrote:
Not to state the obvious, but one solution that many people use would be
to have two folders, one with your flacs and a duplicate folder with the
music in a lossy format (using high quality setting) for your car and
portable players. Lossy files produce sound from such hardware that
most people, even picky ones, find to be quite acceptable. Keeping
lossless files to play in a car seems like overkill to me.

Some software will rip both lossless and lossy to different folders in
one pass. Converting folders from one format to another is easily done
in batch jobs. Set it and forget it, as the guy on the infomercial
 says.

I use the two folder approach, and I find it to be quite useful with
minimal effort required. Drive storage is cheap, so that is no issue.
With your squeeze system, keeping your lossless files in a format with
disadvantages and no significant advantages is a shame.

I can't tell the difference on my Zune but I can in my car as crazy as
that sounds. Not much road noise in my car.

My collection is approaching 2TB of lossless. So a second lame -c0
collection does actually make the disc situation more complicated than
it needs to be. My lossless collection grows by 10GB a week at least.

7.3.3 beta has been working quite well for me with the last controller
update.

Kudos to the team for stepping back and addressing the controller
complaints we have seen growing like an epidemic here lately.

If anyone is running 7.3.2 or early, I really suggest giving the latest
7.3.3 nightly a try, it really really improves the smoothness of the
controller.

[slim] Contacting Support

2009-10-28 Thread Jeff Flowerday

So here's my dilemma.

I have an open incident. Waiting for a replacement battery, was told
2-4 business days. it's now going on 4 weeks.

1) I continually try to contact support, each time I'm on hold for near
an hour, I have a cell phone only and don't want to waste my air time,
so I'm forced to hang up.

2) I finally email support with my incident number and it auto replies
telling me my email address doesn't match the incident.

3) I try to update my online profile with my email address as they
requested in the reply email, but I don't know my password.

4) I try to get it to send me my password for my email address, and it
then procedes to tell my account is invalid.

At what point do you just fire you dead Duet against the wall and just
give up? Man this is frustrating!!!

What format do most of your devices/software support?

Choose the lossless format that is best supported. Be that FLAC, WMA
Lossless or Apple Lossless.

If you don't have any devices and are only concerned with getting it
right with squeezebox, then FLAC is the way to go.

IMO, your current feature set doesn't warrant the new $9.99 price. I'd
rather continue running iPeng on the iPad as a controller or just use

At, $5.99 I was willing to give it a go once authentication support was

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-08-04 Thread Jeff Flowerday

Bringing up a page of album art like that would be way too slow. The
speed squeezebox server can serve the art seems to be an issue. Just
look at the art being populated when you bring up the 5 album under an
artist using the current iPeng.

You would have to wait 5 seconds for a page of art just load at the
least.

Performance should be the #1 goal, IMO.

Would it be too much to add an option in the configuration to clear and
repopulate the entire cache? I have a 7000 plus album library and
would like the art completely cached for when I'm in 3G land.

I use iPeng for reference when shopping and the uncached art is a
little too slow loading via 3G. The library is too large to scroll
through slowly on wifi to get the art to cache.

Thanks!

Also, the artwork is not _that_ much data, I use it over 3G a lot.

It's liveable over 3G but it would be nice if it was already cached. I
have a need for speed. My server definately isn't an issue, I'm runnin
a Core 2 Quad @ 3.25 GHZ/4GB Ram/4 1 TB Blacks in a Raid 10, 64 bit
Windows Server 2008 R2. Actual FLAC files are on an external Raid 0

Of course, you're free to do want you want with your money. If
 pippin
makes too much on the iphone app he may not bother finishing the
 ipad
   version ;)

That's a little below the belt ain't it? I wouldn't dare to make
statements in regard to how many iPengs have been sold world-wide,
 but
I'd guess it's closer to 1000 than to 1. If you look at the way
the app has been designed and how it's been perfected, you just know
there is a lot of development in this app. Even if he did earn
 €20.000
by selling this app, in my opinion, that ain't too much. There are
plenty of guys in the appstore developing useless apps, that are
 poorly
designed and shameless copies of concepts designed by others in
 years
gone by, who earn a whole lot more by selling their apps.

And iPad is even more scarce, so I'm guessing iPeng HD will deliver
even less revenues to the developer. Although ofcourse, most of the
knowledge that has been gathered while building iPeng for iPhone can
 be
reused, so development time is probably less too. At the same time,
knowing the way Pippin seems to work, he is working hard on finding
 a
smart way for the UI that utilizes the iPad's larger screen. I'm
guessing it will be a totally different experience from Squeezepad
 too,
which works fine, but I still find myself using my iPeng everytime
because SP doesn't use the large screen in a smart way. Almost
demanding an upgrade from iPhone to iPad seems a bit odd in that
 sense:
it will be a totally different app.

Anyhow, the point is, ofcourse it's ok for you to decide what you
 will
and will not buy. But they will be 2 totally different apps and
therefor it is ok for the developer to offer it as a separate
 package
and have you pay for them. At €7.99 it's not that steep, not if you
 can
afford to buy an iPad anyway.. ;)

 1. Don't be silly, there's nothing below the belt in my post.
 2. I'm not demanding a free upgrade, I'm just considering getting the
iphone version while I eagerly wait for the real thing.

 Regards,
 Peter

I'd get the iPhone version, until you wait for iPeng HD. It's feature
set is more complete than squeezepad and you then would have it for a
touch or phone if you ever went that way down the road.

First bug for you.

If you go into current playlist, click edit, select all tracks and
delete them. You then close the current playlist popout and add a new
track to the current playlist. When you go back into the playlist it
doesn't show that track you just added.

If you click the save button but then cancel out it seems to cause a
refresh on the playlist and the tracks then properly show up.
