Also, count me in for the lathe - class. Maybe I'll just be able to use
that instead of ordering it from a machine shop.

No need to have a class - just look at the videos and try some

BTW, how much aluminum do you have in you horde? Any square or
circular tubing? I might be interested in buying some of it from you.

Cast iron works okay - preferably old thick stuff. Not cheap Chinese

I've read about groups using waste oil and waste vegetable oil as a
fuel source. They recommend using a siphon nozzle:

If you go that route you will need an adapter - Delavan 17147 or 17136
, some plumbing, and an air source.

We have a local source of mixed aluminum shavings (several alloys - mostly
6061) coming from a CNC machine for ~$0.50/lb. They tend to still be a bit
damp from the spray jets. You have to dry them, then add to an existing

on "cold", and charcoal briquettes.

No need to have a class - just look at the videos and try some experiments
in your backyard.

BTW, how much aluminum do you have in you horde? Any square or circular
tubing? I might be interested in buying some of it from you.

 Hey all,

I'm looking into getting a lightsaber hilt machined out of aluminum and
I'm looking for information. I figured you guys might be able to be able to
point me in the right direction: I want to be able to send a drawing or
maybe a CAD drawing if necessary to a plant to have just a few parts (not
bulk because it's just for me) machined out of aluminum, but I'm not sure
what to look for or what prices to expect. If you guys have any wisdom that
might point me in the right direction, or a contact that does things like
 that, I'd really appreciate it.

 Thanks!

do this. Maybe we can have a class or something? I have aluminum I have been

We use regular old propane at Maker's Alliance. Works fine.
Any extra gets poured into muffin tins from Walmart for easy melting next
time.
We have used crucibles as a container for melting, but they break after a
few uses and if you don't watch the heat, they melt too.
Cast iron works okay - preferably old thick stuff. Not cheap Chinese
imports.
I've read about groups using waste oil and waste vegetable oil as a fuel
source. They recommend using a siphon nozzle:
http://www.amazon.com/Delavan-Siphon-Nozzle-30609-30609-9/dp/B00EO5IE3C
If you go that route you will need an adapter - Delavan 17147 or 17136 ,
some plumbing, and an air source.

Not effectively. We would need a oxy-acetylene, MAP, or a Oxy-propane torch
set up. Then we would need sand for mold making, and we would have to make
some mold boxes. If your making small parts you can use MAP gas from the
hardware store, but if the parts get bigger, or you want to make a lot of
them, it is far more cost effective to buy big bottles of oxy-acetylene or

Re: [SH-Discuss] Machining just a few parts?

2014-05-27 Thread Devin Wolfe
Emachineshop is a great resource, but you will find it is expensive.
Anything one or two piece will be pricey at any shop due to the time
involved in setting up the machines just to run one part. To lessen the
cost you can make the parts yourself or get a group buy going. If you need
help with either or drawing parts up in CAD let me know.

Hey all,

I'm looking into getting a lightsaber hilt machined out of aluminum and I'm
looking for information.

Thanks!

There are a few online machine shops that will do single pieces and small
runs.

http://www.emachineshop.com is one.

Use their software (free) to design the piece and a pricing function is
built-in. Last I checked they let you choose from maybe 20 types of
aluminum.
