Re: בדיקת הגופן הערבי של אובונטו
I think they are making a mistake showing it as a pdf file, as the font rendering mechanism is not necessarily the same as on the desktop (which typically uses HarfBuzz). They also have some path discontinuites w.r.t. to shaping, but perhaps that is just an artifact due to pdf. In any case, as I don't know any arabic, I'm certainly not suitable to comment on it. I got my workplace to switch from subversion to git about a year ago. Most developers (everyone but me actually :-) work under Windows. We've found GitExtensions to be more than sufficient as a GUI under Windows. A few people have used tortoise git as well. Thanks for the info about updated Culmus font. It was a pleasent surprise. I'll study it and perhaps it will make my autonikkud project irrelevant. I just subscribed to the culmus list so that I won't miss any more anouncements. Regarding EzraSIL, I believe it is less feature rich than SBL. And besides, I find it too loose with too much whitespace, which probably due to its design goals of being a scholar font, which put more emphasis on all diacritics being clearly visible. If you already start talking about August Penguin, I would like to mention something that bothered me with last years event. I really liked the T-Shirt and was looking forward to wearing it to work and just for general free advertisement of free software and for associating myself as a member of the movement. I thought it was only me getting into these temporary redundant branches in my history, because I didn't work at one repo at a time, but you're probably right that there is no way around it. You can rewrite history to erase them, but that is certainly not something that I would recommend the casual user. Subversion used to say, 'CVS done right.' With that slogan there is nowhere you can go. There is no way to do CVS right. The advantages of git (and Mercurial) is that you can commit locally and you can merge back and forth between various repositories. There is no central server, which also means that you have less to worry about backing up the central server, because you have identical copies of he repositories spread out. I don't think that git is more difficult than svn for the user if you restrict yourself to: add, commit, push, and pull. (Or just teach them to do commit -a and you can forget about add). Resolving conflicts branches, and rebasing, is another story though. But you won't need them. Actually, this is not true. With git I often encountered problems where it yelled at me, and refused to go further without me doing something about it, yet it didn't tell me what exactly I need to do and I had to consule #git on Freenode about it, or try Googling. This happened to me a lot and may still happen and simply does not happen with Subversion. Another point against git is that projects using git often tend to branch a lot creating a zillion different branches with lots of disorder and uncertainty, and from what I recall there is no way to tell where a certain branch originated from during a git checkout -b command. Regarding graphics tools, you are probably unfortunately right. But regarding scientific computing, from what I have seen there is a critical mass of scientists and technical people who are not comfortable with having their work locked up in a proprietary environment. That's why solutions like numerical python is not a fad. But at the same time, I agree that the majority don't care and will be happy continue fighting over floating or other matlab licenses. Also note that for Matlab there may be real advantages for replacing it with Python. E.g. I have built a system in Python that speaks RS232 and ethernet to certain hardware data collectors, periodically polls these, process the data, and visualize it in dynamic web site. Doing this through matlab would be much more complex. As regards to graphics, matplotlib (http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/) creates beautiful graphs and it more than fullfills my needs for 2D plots. The big problem with replacing matlab is the large amount of application specific toolboxes and simulink. Neither of which have valid open source replacements. Regards, Dov 2010/8/22 E L nak...@gmail.com People just don't understand. A lot of times choosing non opensource software over os ones comes from real technical difficulties. Giving the easy highlearn vs moodle is really not a good example as highlearn is not only closed source but also a sucky system. You have any idea how many programs that people needs just don't work on linux? How many companies give license for windows for free while the linux ones cost money? Do you know how silly it is to claim that you can replace matlab with octave? Or how hard it is to find professional music editor for linux(no matter opensource or not)? If anyone think he has answer to those questions, or anyone knows how to solve the various problems people have in releasing their code under opensource license

Re: HaAretz Article about Open Knesset, August Penguin and HaMakor
Nice, but someone should educate the the author of the article of the difference between free software licenses and public domain. Please write the list if you take the bait so that not all list members will send him the correction. :-) Dov On Wed, Aug 11, 2010 at 07:53, Gabor Szabo szab...@gmail.com wrote: http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/business/here-s-what-happens-when-computer-geeks-meet-mks-who-barely-come-to-work-1.307255 Gabor http://szabgab.com/ ___ Discussions mailing list Discussions@hamakor.org.il http://hamakor.org.il/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discussions ___ Discussions mailing list Discussions@hamakor.org.il http://hamakor.org.il/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discussions
Re: Leumi-Card new site
Great. Hopefully this also includes the standardized authentication when you make a transaction, something that I have had a lot of problems with in the past with various sites. (That they should create one time VISA credentials that are good for a single transaction is an issue that has nothing to do with accessibility. Only last week did I speak to a firm I ordered from through the internet who said if you don't want us to store your credit card details, then you shouldn't buy over the internet.)
